W500 w/ Windows 7 64-Bit Ultimate fails to recognize some audio CDs

My DVD/CD drive (a HL-DT-ST_DVDRAM_GSA-U20N) in my Lenovo W500 laptop (running Windows 7 64-Bit Ultimate) fails to recognize some audio CDs.
It recognizes most audio CDs, but a few are not recognized by Windows 7 itself, or by any other program on my computer.
These CDs are recognized by other Windows 7 computers.
I don't think that it's a copy protection issue, since the CDs don't mention any copy protection scheme (and also since they work on other Windows 7 machines).
One CD that wasn't recognized by my machine was the second CD from a two CD set (the first CD was correctly recognized).
I have the latest updates for Windows, and all my programs, drivers, BIOS & firmware.
Thanks.

What kind of behavior are you getting from the drive? If it's spinning up, down, and up again your lens might be dirty or the drive could be failing.
If you do clean the lens, be careful. Do your research first or you might make it worse.
Edit: Replacements are:
42T2511 or 42T2541 (DVD)
42T2543 or 42T2513 (DVD/CD-RW combo)
42T2545, 42T2515 or 42T2551 (DVD-RAM/RW)
You can get the 42T2543 for $23 and the 42T2545 for $45 on eBay.

  • My Windows 64 bit system won't recognize my ipod/itunes...

I am using Windows 7... My brother and I also share the same computer, and our music libraries are quite different.  I do not know if that has anything to do with it or not.  I've tried removing the software and reinstalling it, but it doesn't always work.
WOW, the program has been removed from my PC... and while I was typing this, the itunes sync page popped up!  I don't know what is happening, I just want to listen to music.
    Help me please.

    Hello misspam0113,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
From your post I understand that your iPod nano is not being recognized by iTunes on your Windows PC.  In order to resolve this issue please follow the steps in the article below, in order, testing after each section.

  • OS X 10.4.3 fails to recognize some bundles (packages)

The copy of OS X 10.4.3 on my main drive suddenly does not recognize most .bundle packages, causing my software development to fail when bundles must be copied. Booting instead from an external drive running 10.4.3 shows the same .bundle files as bundles, with the bundle icon. TechTool 4.1.1 verifies that these .bundle files have their bundle bits properly set. What could have caused this to happen? Is there any way to fix it short of re-installing OS X 10?

Have you tried rebuilding the Launch Services database?

  • QuickLook fails to recognize some text files

QuickLook previews most but not all doc, txt, html, php and css files. QuickLook will work on one file and fail on an apparently identical file, where both open cleanly in the same application when double clicked.
In some but not all cases, file metadata (viewed in Path Finder) shows difference in UTI and/or "Type" fields where QuickLook works with one and not the other. However, this is not consistent, and in any event I cannot find a way to either edit UTI or Type fields, or set file associations based on UTI or Type (file associations seem to be limited to file extension).
This behavior is the same on my MBP and iMac.
Does anyone else see this problem? Any suggestions?

Thanks for some of the ideas. Here is the status and info update so far:
Original location of photos were from an old PC in 2005 that was backed up onto this external hard drive. I recently came accross the hard drive and noticed that there were a large number of photos that had not yet been loaded into iphoto. This is where this all started.
Clicked and dragged from my external hard drive to the desktop - No success.
    Iphoto version 9.3.2
Connected the external hard drive to my other computer (PC) and emailed a few to myself. From my Imac, opened my email and downloaded them to my desktop. It worked and iphoto recognized them. So I tried emailing more photos from my external hard drive connected to my Imac to  myself again, this time not from another pc but from my Imac. No success. So the lesson so far is that somehow it is making a difference in the file when I email the files from another computer (PC) and then save them to my desktop on my Imac.
I attached images of both file info. The one to the left of the photo is from the "fixed" file that somehow Iphoto recognizes after emailing it to myself, and yes it is RGB color. The one to the Right is the info screen of the original file. I see no difference in the file type between the two. However, this is from an untrained eye.
Given the amount of photos (approx 1500) I would have to email myself, I would like to know if there is another way to fix these files in lieu of going through this round about and time consuming fix via email.
Sorry for the image orientation. Everytime I attached it, the image went sideways.
    Thanks!!

  • Garageband fails to recognize digital audio in connected for recording

I just bought a new mac mini and when I connect it to my digital piano via the digital (optical) audio in jack, neither Leopard 10.5.1 nor Garageband recognizes that there is a device connected to the audio in port.
The digital piano does self-power the cable (i.e. I can see the red light emitted by the piano signaling that it is the sender). I've also had no problem using the same cable and instrument to record to a Mac Pro. My feeling is that it's defective hardware (I'm taking the unit into the Apple Store to see about getting it replaced since the component was DOA), but I just wanted to post this question to see if perhaps there was some obvious setting that I am missing.
In short, neither Garageband nor Leopard (via System Preferences/Audio or the Audio MIDI setup utility in the Applications/Utilities folder) recognizes the fact that I have an optical audio device plugged into the mac mini's audio in port with the device powered. Have I missed something obvious?
    Thanks.

Sorry for the confusion - what I meant by "detect" is that because the mac mini has combo analog/digital sound jacks, the way the system works for these ports is that depending on the plug used to connect to the jack, the system will either show, in the case of the audio-in port, "Line In" or "Digital Line In" (or something to that effect) depending upon the plug that is connected. This is how it works for the headphone jack as well. My system behaves correctly for this jack in the following manner:
    1) Nothing connected, system preferences shows "Internal Speaker" in the output tab of the audio preferences pane.
    2) Standard stereo headset or external speaker connected, system preferences shows "Headset" or something equivalent (I don't have the machine available at the moment to look at).
    3) With a toslink to mini adapter plugged in, system preferences shows "Digital line out".
The equivalent behavior does not occur for me for the audio input hence my belief that the port is faulty.

  • 10.1.0.4 for Microsoft Windows (32-bit)

When will Oracle Database 10g Release 10.1.0.4 be available for Microsoft Windows (32-bit)?
(I'm having some problems with Export:
    ORA-39094, fixed in 10.1.0.4
    ORA-39127, fixed in 10.1.0.3)

If you want the basic database, you want #1. The companion CD contains example code and header files if you are developing OCI or OCCI applications. It may make sense to download and install the companion CD after installing the database.
Options #3 and #5 allow you to connect to a remote Oracle database, but do not include the actual database software. These are things that you would install on the client machines if you deploy your applications to client machines.
Option #4 only comes in to play if you are installing a grid (RAC cluster).

  • Scandisk or defrag fail to recognize hd volume

    hello all, and happy holidays.
i've had this issue b4 but didnt pay too much attention to it, but now it has happened again so i am a bit bothered.
i have seagate 7200.7 120GB sata drive with ncq hooked to the nvidia sata controller #2.
The drive has 8 volumes (c-j), c,d,e,g,h are ntfs, the others fat32.
Sometime when my computer hangs and i've to reset it, scandisk fails to recognize some volumes (totally random this time f,i, always fat32) as valid win xp volumes.
I can still open these volumes and read and write to them, but cant run defrag (i use disk keeper pro) on them, or for that matter anyother hdd tools like windows scandisk etc.
Now when ever i reboot, scandisk kicks in complaining that it cant scan non-xp drives.
My options include turning off scandisk, reformatting (loads of data on them, really not a good option), find out whats causing it!!
So anyone here help me work on option three
Rest of the system is in the signature.
    thanks.

    Hello again tcdm1972,
This quote from a MicroMat technician is misleading and makes me wonder about abusingly promoting defragmentation (and using their products) as so necessary.
Yes, in certain rare cases one might benefit from defragmenting HD and HD free space, but in Mac OS X it is not so black and white question.
    - In the more general usage of Mac OS X, defragmentation is actually counter-productive and defeats the very clever way Mac OS X has to rewrite every file on-the-fly onto the best possible location at this very moment, each time an application uses it.
Best location on the hard drive varies, depending on many more criteria than the simple contiguity.
About the term "optimization" in Apple software installs:
I find it misleading too, as all it optimizes is the launching of applications in Mac OS X
(it's the "update_prebinding" command really, nothing to do with defragmentation).
    About OnyX, Yasu etc:
These too are small utilities to run quite harmless Terminal commands. They don't play in the same fields, nothing neither to do with defragmentation.
DiskWarrior too has yet another approach: Directory handling.
So, your original question about using iDefrag:
    On their website they state
"To defragment your boot volume, you need to boot from a different volume"
    as I said.
In your case, the solution is clear:
since you have two boot partitions on your HD,
    - boot from Partition 1 to defrag Partition 2,
    and
    - boot from Partition 2 to defrag Partition 1.
That is, a copy of iDefrag installed on each of your Mac OS X volumes.

  • ITunes 11.1 on Windows 8 will not play/rip audio CDs

    Problem:
I cannot play or rip audio CDs using iTunes on Windows 8. iTunes does not show any errors. It recognizes that I've put in an audio CD with tracks (and, in fact, matched the tracks in the iTunes database). When I click the Play button, it just skips from one song to the next.
    Stats:
    - OS: Windows 8 Media Edition/64-bit
    - BDRW: LG WH14NS40
    - iTunes: 11.0.1.126
    Background:
I built a computer and installed a BDRW. The BDRW uses Windows drivers, so no additional software was installed.
The burner reads CD/DVD data and video just fine (haven't tested with BluRay yet).
When I put an audio CD in, I couldn't listen to it in either iTunes or Windows Media Player.
After following the directions here -- http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-pictures/dvdcd-player -not-playing-audio-cds-win8-laptop/791e04c0-628e-42a8-8014-43cc782511a4 -- I could hear it on Windows Media Player, but not on iTunes.
I could not rip any music using iTunes: all it did was create a bunch of 1kb files.
    Question:
How could I have iTunes play Audio CDs again?
    Thanks in advance.

    Correction: iTunes 11.1.0.126, not 11.0.1.126

    Hi there,
Specs: as per Qosmio X 300. SSD 110GB, pentium core 4 extreme, 4 Gb RAM, plenty free storage on SSD (29GB), NVidia drivers with primary being GE Force 9800 M GTS, Direct X10.  there is also a note down the bottom saying that if i have linked graphic cards (whihc i do i believe there are three), that i can expect better perfomrance with some software.
Ok I aplogise from the outset, i am a layman and not that techie. K.  So the issue that I upgraded recently (last week) from vista ultimate 64 bit to windows 7 64 bit. ultimate.  For the main, I am reasonably happy with the outcome in most areas - except gaming that is. I have increased speed and agility and the processor is now rated at 7.2. WEI. overall the laptop is rated at 5.8. however, getting back to teh reason for writing, I have nothing negative to say about windows 7 (as compared to its predecessor) apart from wishing to resolve my game crash issue. which usually occurs about 15 mins - 20 mins into a game and comes in the form of a shutdown ? BSOD from whence the laptop reboots when prompted at on/off and wants to know if to start normally or in various safe modes. I have noticed that the laptop does become very hot at the back (around the fans) prior to teh shutdown, and i am wondering if this is an overheating issue, and how to resolve if this is the case. the only other thing i have noticed that seems untoward is that i have apparently lost a wireless jump start driver from the upgrading process which i cannot find anywherre, and may be totally unrelated to this issue anyway.
All i want to do is play the games i could play on windows vista ultimate 64 bit. these include: Sims 3, sims 3 world adventures, sims 3 ambitions, highloft end stuff, and Bioshock. Oddly enough, i have played sid meyers civillisations revolutions IV (the latest one) with no crashes, and i havent tried ANNO 1404, but fear a similar fate may await this game as some of the others.
    Addditional information:
everything is as i described it above, however the screen does not go blue but black, and the laptop shuts itself down,  laptop acts as if hibernating mode? (these are guesses) or some mechanism geared at preventing over heating - the back becomes very hot.  the machine can be rebooted from normal mode but comes up firstly with a screen suggesting that the laptop was incorrectly shutdown, and offers options as to safe mode, normal etc. i have been starting normally with no adverse effects.   This is scenario one.
scenario two ends up similarly at teh reboot stage, but gets there differently. i play the game and the screen freezes, unable to move touchpad curser, unalbe to use ctrl alt del to get up task manager. end up having to crash to reboot.
I am quite frustrated and very reluctant to mess around with things that i dont understand (dont want to make the problem worse!). I am happy to attemtpt to follow your good explicit advice.
the only other negative thing i am expereinceing is screen flicker on internet. I have changed my power mode from high performance to balanced to try to nullify the overheating issue but i now am noticing this screen flicker which is irriating and appears on keystroke, or cursor movement.
Please note well:  I am a layman, not a technician! Please explain in easy to (dummy) terms! Thanks!
    kind regards

  • Broken ATI Mobility FireGL V5700 for W500 with Windows 7 - 64 bit

    Hello all,
My setup is Lenovo Thinkpad W500 with Windows 7 - 64 bit
Display card is a ATI Mobility FireGL V5700
My graphics drivers used to be functional but now I have lost a lot of functionality (mostly graphics issues).
    My two biggest issues are:
Many video games will crash/break because of my drivers apparently
Lost switchable graphics completely (the ability to change from FireGL V5700 to the low power card)
To clearly state: It is impossible to download these drivers from AMD, AMD themselves tell you to go to Lenovo
This is because Lenovo is responsible for the display card drivers in their own laptops.
I have not modified my computer. I believe that Lenovo's updates broke my laptop's functions.
    How do I FIX this??
Nothing works from Lenovo's website. I've installed all their updates and the issues persist.
The Lenovo Solution Center tells me that everything is up to date.
Windows Update tells me everything is up to date.
I am NOT reformatting my computer, that is a rediculous thing to say when everyone is clearly having this issue.
What is the deal here? This laptop cost a very large amount of money and now it just broke itself? I don't believe it.

Ok thank you, this is likely a BIOS related issue now.
As you can see, Power Manager does not provide a switchable graphics option:
Device Manager only recognizes the high power graphics card (FireGL V5700) and not the low power card
Here is my BIOS settings for the display adapter:
         Default Primary video Device: INTERNAL
         Boot Display Device: THINKPAD LCD
         Graphics Device: DISCRETE GRAPHICS
OS Detection for Switchable Graphics: DISABLED

I'm using a Windows 7 Ultimate with Dot Net Framework 4.0. UAC disabled.

    Any idea? Thanks in advance!

    Issue resolved.
I'm using the msi. For whatever reason, I have to uninstall the CIPC and remove cisco and cisco systems folder under c:\program files.
It seems that CUPC wants a clean installation. I had CIPC and CUPC installed on this machine before.
