W510 SSD problems
I have now tested with my Crucial M4 128GB SSD for a few days and i can't solve the reboot problems i face.
Right now i have installed back my old mechanical harddrive and it works great with no such problems so either there is compatibility problems with W510 and SSD or bugs in the firmware on the SSD.
I am trying to search the net and i can't find many people running SSDs in their W510.
Is it a general problem with SSDs and W510?
Solved!
Go to Solution.
I have now solved the problem, the fault was not the SSD disk or W510 but a faulty Corsair memory module.
I ran memtest in Linux and it showed that i had a bad Corsair memory module with over 8000 errors, i have now exchanged and RMA the bad module for a new one and the shutdown/reboot problem is now gone when i run WEI in Win7.

Workaround for some W510 Audio Problems. Lenovo, please take a look at this!
Hi all
I believe most or all of the people are affected with poor sound quality of W510. I do believe there are some people who bring their laptops along and not convenient to get a external sound card and external speakers on the road. I am not too sure, but what I think that causes audio problem in W510, T410 or T510 is due to the implementations of Combo Audio/Mic Jack. So far, I have not heard any audio problems from X201 or W701/W701ds with a separate mic and audio jack (1 green and red, instead of 1 combo) Listed machines are using Conexant 20585 SmartAudio HD Sound Card.
The workaround is to force install Conexant 20561 SmartAudio HD Driver through Device Manager
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-73721
Problem Partially Resolved
1. Using Audio Director - Classic mode enables you to use both internal speakers and external speakers/headphone simultaneously. (By right, this should be in Multi-Stream mode, due to this driver not programmed for W510). However, the volume of the internal speaker will be reduced by half if an external speakers/headphone is plugged.
2. The sound quality is improved (tested with internal speakers).
3. Solved Irregular Volume Problems.
Drawback of using this driver
1. Using Multi-Stream mode in this case would not enables you to use both internal speakers and external speakers/headphone simultaneously. However it would just make your internal speaker to be louder. External speaker/headphone would not work if Multi-Stream mode is selected.
2. Custom EQ is not usable, if used, only the right channel of internal speaker, external speaker/headphone would work, and the sound quality will be like a spoilt radio.
3. Only Voice (VoIP) EQ is optimized for external speaker/headphone. Using Off, Jazz, Dance or Concert EQ would make you feel that the vocal (singer's voice) is diffused, blurred like excessive 3D effects.
4. Even if any preloaded EQ is selected, after system has been restarted, the selected EQ would still be saved, but the band (31Hz - 16KHz would be changed back to Off EQ) It is ok as it just affects the graphics, not the sound.
I know that Forum Administrators, Lenovo Staff, Community Moderators, Gurus and Volunteered Moderators/Users would be surfing around and looking for new post. Please take a look and leave a post or PM to me, thank you very much.
It is alright if Lenovo don't think that there is any problems regarding the sound in W510. However, I do believe most users/owners of W510 would appreciate if the sound system could be further improved through a better driver or new revision of hardware to something like a T400 standards or something. Some users would spent so much $ just to get all-in-a-box solution and would not want to invest further just for a external card to sacrifice portability and use more $. Finally, I still do believe that W510 audio problems can be resolved.

PeterHi ckhordiasma
Thanks for reviving ths old thread. How about trying Dolby drivers? It sounds great and could possibly resolve those issues without going through too much troubleshooting.
The link is under my signature.
Hope it helps!
Happy 2012!

Here's my story: I've had my W510 for 4 years without problems of any kind. However, recently bootup times started to be around 4 minutes. So I decided to get an SSD and put that in to see if performance increased. I bought a couple of 240 GB HP v300a drives on sale. They are SATA III drives, with Sandforce 2281 controllers. I made a disk image using Acronis, then printed that on the SSD and installed it. It booted up fine, in a fraction of the time, and all was good for several weeks. Then a very interesting problem popped up. The only game I play on the W510 is World of Warcraft. From time to time, the game would completely freeze. The whole system would lock up, and I would have to press the power button and do a manual cold boot. The freezing problem was intermittent, and seemed to happen at times when the game was particularly graphics intensive. Sometimes it would go away for days, only to come back. Weirdness! I thought it was the fault of WoW--but when the system froze using Creative Suite 5.5, I put the original HDD back in. Now I'm back to where I was. No freezing. Everything works fine, if sluggish and boot times are 4 minutes.
I want to install an SSD in this machine. I know I can get 4 more years of life out of it if I do. Perhaps the HP drive isn't as compatible with the W510 as some other brand. I welcome recommendations. If I neglected to do something in BIOS, perhaps someone could counsel me. The HP SSD itself may be defective--I have not tried it in another system. However, the identical disk went into my Dell laptop and there have been absolutely no problems, and that was a far older system than my W510. The HP disks were really a stab in the dark. If someone can direct me to a disk that will work with a disk image (I don't own a full version of Windows 7, just upgrades)--but I do have the Lenovo recovery disks. Thanks in advance for any counsel you may offer.
Best regards, Mike

Go to Solution.Hi,
@Hackermc:
As far as I can see the only model that is supported on http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=ThinkPad%20W510%20Series is the M500 (not M4!) with 240GB, not 480 GB?!
Crucial M500 240GB 2.5-inch Internal SSD
Or is this incorrect?
I will looking forward of your results with the 480 GB version of the M500.
@ George
You said the M4 512 is running well with the W510.
Which Chipset does your W510 have: Intel 6 or 7 series. And which CPU?
I think, this will make a big difference.
My dealer is able to get the M4/512 GB, which is more than sufficient for the W510 Sata II.
I got around 260 MB/s with the Samsung SSD on the W510 (when it had a 5 minutes of good time).
This ist the maximum write speed for dem M4, so it fits perfectly.

Hello,
The left mouse button + Wheel for panning does not work when using programs like (Chief Architect, Google Earth, and Kindle for PC). I'm using Microsoft Bluetooth 5000 mouse, and the UltraNav also does not work even when I uninstall the external mouse. The only time the mouse works properly with these programs, is when I restart the system. Then back to the same problem after waking up from sleep mode or opening and closing a few times.
Any Help would be appreciated, Thank YouI have now solved the problem, the fault was not the SSD disk or W510 but a faulty Corsair memory module.

Mac Pro 2009 with SSD Problems since mavericks
I am having constant problems with my mac pro early 2009 since Mavericks. It is a standard mac pro but now has a crucial m500 ssd as the main drive.
I originally put a OWC 120gb SSD in then changed it for a 240gb OWC SSD as I blamed the SSD for my problems. Then recently I blamed OWC so bought a crucial SSD but still having all the same problems.
My list of problems (these happen 20+ times per day) I'm a web designer so use a lot of browsers and use the computer for 9+ hours per day:
Firefox is used as main browser. Every so often pages load but without loading the style sheet shortly followed by pages not loading at all. Then if I type an address and hit return it does nothing. Then opening Chrome pages work for a couple of seconds then that stops working too. Sometimes FF and Chrome don't work but safari does sporadically.
Chrome is unusable really as it crashes all the time.
During all these events, if I open certain apps (randomly) e.g. openeing system prefs it will 'fail to open' and show the crash report and reopen option which just continues with another crash report. At this stage a reboot is essential
Possibly related...if I wake computer from sleep, it takes about 5-8 seconds before I can do anything. I can see everything, move mouse etc... but if I try and click on an open tab it won't work until I wait about 8 seconds.
I don't think it is sleep related though as these browser problems happen after a reboot and no sleep. Hard disk is set to never sleep.
Here is a recent system prefs crash report.

2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a few minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

New MBP and SSD problems?
Ok, so I installed an Intel SSD in my new MBP( I am eventually getting the MCE OptiBay to put my regular HDD back in. Here's the thing...Every time I run Boot Camp Assistant, and click to install Windows...it restarts...grey screen, then...flashing folder with question mark. Any ideas?? I've reinstalled OSX on this drive twice now. There seems to be nothing wrong with the drive because OSX installed and runs fine on it. What's going on? Do the new MBP's need a new Boot Camp update, or something?
Intel 2G SSD? Did you remove the 'mechanical' drive for now?
There were problems in the past with Intel and with 3rd party SSDs.
What I would like you to try doing is use the mechanical drive for now for OS X if possible, and disconnect it, and with just the SSD in there (pretty hard I guess???) forget using BCA, and boot Windows 7 DVD and have at it.
Firmware on Mac's, firmware on Intel SSD...
I assume holding Option/Alt on startup doesn't work either.
10.6.6 did a couple things, still no idea why:
Wants to download drivers to CD (broken);
Takes longer to boot back to OS X (no idea);
OS X reports to be running slower than before.
OS X still lacks TRIM for SSD and OS X suffers (still faster but not what it should be).
Oh, what version of Windows? you may need Windows 7, and if you bought it from school or electronic download, did you have to burn ISO to disc? That can act or behave in odd ways like this. -
SSD-problem with MacBook Pro 13" (Early 2011)
Hi there,
I've tried to use two different SSDs in my MacBook Pro 13" (early 2011). The first one (Samsung 840 Series, 500GB) crashed after two days: the beachball appeared and after a restart there was this question mark-symbol on my screen: no system found. Had to send this SSD back to Amazon. A few days later I've bought a new one, a SanDisk Extreme with 450GB. I've used it for two days, then my system crashed again and after a restart of my Mac I couldn't get any further than to the grey apple-symbol. Even the recovery partition didn't work anymore. Does anyone of you have the same problem with his (or her) MacBook Pro 13" (early 2011) - and any ideas for a solution?
Thanks for your answers!

Z60T + INTEL SSD problem!
Hi,
I want to chance the old HAD from a Z60T to a Intel SSD.
Notebook type: 2511-EJG
SSD Model: SSDSA2M160G2GC
I had cloned the dates from the old HDD with Acronis True Image Home 2010 to the Intel SSD.
But after installing the SSD into the laptop the OS do not boot. I had contacted the lenovo telephone support but they can't help me to find the reason.
After checking some theadsof this forum I have the idée it can bee a problem with the SATA1/ SATA2 respectively 1.5 Gb/sec / 3 Gb/sec media transfer rat compatibility.
Is that the problem? And how can I fix it?
Tanks and sorry for my bad English skills. I hope you still understand me.admindrey, welcome to the forum,
please try cloning again, but this time with the SSD inserted in the primary hdd slot in your Z60. The original drive in an usb external enclosure and boot from an Acronis rescue cd you can create with Acronis.
Let us know how you get on.

PepperonI blog -
Hello, Ive got a 2012 Macbook Pro that i installed a Samsung 830 in when I bought it a year ok, worked fine up until 2 weeks ago.
One evening the system got sluggish and hanged so i powered it off and when rebooting i got the no boot volume questionmark. Rebooted again into the Internet recovery and Disk utility showed no harddisks.
Fine, so i hooked up my old mechanical drive and that showed up so i concluded the SSD was broken. Sent it for warranty replacement but they said it worked fine there (Hooked to a PC system). Got the drive back today and still I cant see it in Disk utility. My old mechanical drive shows up no prob and installing OS X on that at the moment. I have rebooted i guess 100 times with SSD and it havent showed up in disk utility. The strange thing is I can access and use the SSD when I connect it to my PC with win7?! Have tried format it both as NTFS/exFAT but disk utility on mac wont recognise it.
I really dont know how to go on from here. Obviosly there isnt a cable problem on my MBP since the mechanical is working.
Have tried reseting PRAM also with no luck.no such thing as an "overpriced SATA cable" even the best are very cheap.
You said----! Have tried format it both as NTFS/exFAT but disk utility on mac wont recognise it.
Why did you try to format it as such for your Mac? Format it in Mac OSX extended journaled.
You said----Ive also seen the mechanical drive not working properly, at one point it "disappeared" ..........Guess its either cable issue then (not very likely?)
Nope, in fact VERY likely, ........yes, it "vanished", bad SATA cable. SATA flexicable is very cheap. -
I have a 2011 mabook air 13 in core i5 with a 256 ssd my problem is when i tried to install windows 7 i failed about 3 or 4 times so it created a partition on my ssd after removing them and giving up on windows 7 i was checking if i had anough room to install some apps but when checking my mac shows 250.14GB and lost from its original 256GB plz help i would like to restore the missing GB's
Your SSD may be spec'd at 256Gb, but in fact the actual capacity is 250.14GB.
This capacity has nothing to do with your attempts to install Windows 7, my mid-2012 MBA has always had the exact SSD capacity as yours. So what you are seeing is completely normal. -
W510 Gaming Problem - Black screen
First, I did some search before I post, and I found someone had a similar problem, but did not found any solution for it.
I have the similar problem as mentioned on:http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/W-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/W510-crashes-during-heavy-CPU-GPU-usage-possibl.... Black screen, keyboard no longer function, and I can hear the cooling fans slowing down, HARD DRIVE STILL FUNCTIONING, as I can see the HDD light is flashing.
Only thing I can approve is that this problem is not caused by heavy CPU or GPU use or overheat, because my computer behaves different on different games.
Here are some games that will cause this problem. All my games are licensed.
Plant VS. Zombie:
-Problem occurs while launching the game on FULL SCREEN mode.
-After edit registry to WINDOWED mode, the game works well.
Left 4 Dead 2:
-Problem occurs while launching the game first time.
StarCraft 2:
-Game successfully launch on both FULL SCREEN and WINDOWED screen.
-I have been play SC2 for a lot of times, for different time period amunt of time and this problem only occurred for once when I was in the middle of a battle.
GTA 4:
-Problem occurs when I play this game for 2-4 hrs.
This problem NEVER OCCURRED on: CS1.6, Red Alert 3, COD4 & 6, Metro 2033
Also my computer passes all the test mentioned on the other post.
HERE is my comp hardare info:
OS: Windows 7 Ult 64-bit (6.1 Build 7601) [SP1], I have same problems also before SP1.
Sys Model: 4318CTO
BIOS Ver: 1.00PARTTBLX (System BIOS Version: 6NET74WW)
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU Q820 @1.73Ghz
Memory: 8192MB
DX verison: 11
Graphic: NVIDIA Quadro FX 880M (1600x1900)
All my driver have been updated to the lastest stable release version.
Anyone have any suggestion for this weird problem???
Solved!
Go to Solution.Never mind, thx for ppl who read this post.
The problem solved.
My vid driver was outdated, i thought it was the lastest version because "Automatically find drivers for my NVIDIA products" on nVidia website never notify me for update. -

MSI Z87-G45 Stuck on A2 SSD problem
Hi,
So I have a new setup build with some parts from my old machine (SSD, HDD, CD/DVD and PSU). At first the system booted fine and I was installing Windows 8.1 to my SSD. I went to get a cup of coffee and when I came back it restarted and was stuck on the A2 code (no access to BIOS). Now it won't boot when the Samsung 840 SSD is connected to any SATA port. When I disconnect the drive everything boots up normally and I can access the BIOS.
What i've done:
Updated the motherboard bios to v1.7 didn't help
Updated the SSD drive to the latest firmware didn't help
Reset the CMOS with the button on the back didn't help
Tried different SATA cable for SSD and different power cable didn't work
Weird this is, when resetting the CMOS with the button on the back, and turning on the PC it detects the Samsung 840 SSD but when pressing F1 to enter bios it just sit there being stuck doing nothing.
Any idea what could cause this problem? And how this can be fixed? Would it help to install a beta bios?@Dude did what you said:
1. Turn on PC with only power to SSD let it run for 20 mins
2. Turn PC off and pulled out the power cable of the PSU so full power down (I waited for all the leds to go out)
3. Turn on the PC with only power to SSD and let it run for 20 mins
4. Turn PC off and pulled out the power cable of the PSU for the full power down
5. Turned on the PC with the SATA cable connected to the SSD.
Still stuck on A2. What I did notice btw is that, when normally booting you see all kinds of debug codes going on the bottom right screen. When the SSD is connected I only see the A2 debug code no other codes before that.
EDIT:
Updated the bios to 1.8b1 didn't resolve the problem :(
EDIT2:
After CMOS reset and removing all other SATA devices. Pressing F1 or F2 doesn't do anything. -
TRIM Command Availablility on W510 SSD
Hi all, does anyone know if the 128GB SSD option on the latest W510's come with TRIM support out of the box?
Solved!
Go to Solution.I just got my OCZ Agility 2 SSD yesterday and finished installing everything again. I went with this one for the value, it is also SATA II only, supports TRIM, 240gigs at $455 after $30 mail in rebate this month, one of the best values I found. And this thing is fast, usually after log in all the programs that load at start used to take forever but now it's like 5 seconds and everything is loaded completely. My Windows Experience Index for the hard drive is a whopping 7.7 right now

Hey
i've read some thread and sites about w510 and ssd's, but i'm a bit confused now.
So I will buy a "ThinkPad 2nd HDD Adapter Ultrabay III SATA" and put my current in use sata hd in it. Then the new SSD into the main slot right?
And what i have to respect by the selection of the ssd?
is SATA II supported? SATA III?
is SATA 3GB/s supported? SATA 6GB/s?
would be nice if anyone can give me some advice.
thank youThat's exactly how I roll. Intel 160GB SSD in the primary bay. I use a couple of different 320 and 500GB 7200rpm drives in the Ultrabay.
W510 is SATA3. It's still unknown if the full SATA6 pipe will be available on the W520. But SSD drives that have a SATA6 capability should still downshift and work on the W510. The Intel and Crucial C300 drives do.
