W510 won't boot (blinking lights syndrome) - solved...

Hi,
My W510 problems have been quite similar to the "won't awake from sleep" postings elsewhere on this forum.  Went into hibernation, then could not be wakened and ended up in the blinking lights syndrome state (every 5 seconds, the various lights flash, along with possibly a barely audible single beep; need to hold power button down for >10sec to stop).  But mysteriously, after a few hours I did get it to boot.  Then I did a shutdown (from Windows 7).  Upon returning the following day, and pushing the power button, I get the blinking lights syndrome -- no POST, no ThinkVantage screen - just black screen.  So this **bleep** blinking lights syndrome can be independent of sleep/wake problems.
Cutting to chase, since this is an 8GB RAM machine (from factory), with 2-2 & 2-2, I popped out the 2 DIMMs from the top (keyboard) DIMM slots.  This allowed me to reboot!  I surmise a loosely seated DIMM.  In fact, a **bleep** metal sheet partially obstructs removing/replacing the lower slot's DIMM -- if a factory tech needed to fiddle with DIMMs, I bet this sheet would get in the way! (snip-snip...)
I shutdown, replaced the top DIMMs (bringing it back to 8GB) and successfully rebooted again.
For reference, other possible sins to avoid, that other forum threads have implicated in this blinking lights syndrome, at least for sleep/wake problems are:
   * use of USB mouse plugged into side (3.0, "SS") slot when booting (or changing power state?)
   * use of VGA port (i.e., to duplicate displays)  "          "                "                 "                  "
Both of these wereearlier  true for me.

Hi and welcome to the forum!
Sounds like the OS has corrupted, if I were you I would press ThinkVantage Button on boot and see what are my options to repair the OS. You should save your data in case you plan to do a factory restore, RnR has options like "Rescue files" which allows you to put your files on an external drive.
However, in case you aren't using lenovo preload, then you can use XP disc to do a repair installation, you would need to set SATA to Compatibility mode in the BIOS for the HDD first (press F1 to enter the BIOS on lenovo logo -> Config -> SATA -> change the setting to Compatibility -> Save before exiting the setup), when you're in the BIOS, be sure to make the optical drive as first boot device in there, too.
Following are some guides on repair installation:-
http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm#RI
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/operatingsystems/ss/instxprepair1.htm
As for the battery, once you're successful in restoring Windows, try battery reset, to do so launch ThinkVantage Power Manager -> Switch to Advanced Mode -> Battery -> Battery Maintenance -> Perform a rest.
Also verify if your battery falls under following firmware update by tallying the FRU number (which can be found in the Power Manager):- http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-75738.html
Let us know how things go.

  • Won't Boot -- Blinking PowerLED of Death

    Hi,
So I was upgrading the RAM on my Mac Pro and now the computer won't boot. It turns on and all I get is the blinking power LED. It's blinking once per second. I know that typically this means that the RAM isn't seated correctly. So I have reseated the RAM at least 10 times now. I have also tried taking out the new ram, and using the standard RAM that came with the computer, still not booting. I've tried swapping the riser cards. I've tried booting with just one riser card and alternating the slots and which card; still no boot. I have checked the seating on the harddrives, and the video card and anything else I can see. Still not booting. I've tried booting with a single ram stick in every slot, and even tried the same thing with all four sticks of ram; still nothing. I have also tried pressing the SMC RST button, no help.
*NOTE 1: When I turn on the computer, all four red LEDs on the riser card(s) light up for a second and then turn off.
*NOTE 2: When the power is on and I press the DIAG LED button, I get this only: TRICKLE - Orange, PWR ON- Green.
I guess my question is: where's the problem? Is there any way I can definitively tell if it's the riser card(s)? Is there a way I can just check the ram itself? How can I check to make sure it's not the logic board? Any help in what I should check would be greatly appreciated.

This problem also happened to me. Last week, I awoke to the blinking power light... Tried rebooting and no luck. Several times.
I read this thread and thought I would try swapping the memory around.
It worked! My MacPro is back to life - I was upset because it meant a trip to the Apple support center... Even though I live in Mexico City and there are the Authorized Apple Service Centers I'm glad I tried this before packing it up for observation. I can only conclude that this may happen again so for now let's hope all is well... and at best a temporary glitch. The odd part is that this happened two days after I moved my hardware to another location. I though perhaps a power surge occurred and tweaked the hardware.

  • MacBook Pro won't boot, sleep light is on, nothing else

    Help!
I've got a late 2007 MacBook Pro that got a new HD under warranty in late 2008. It's worked great through last night until this morning. This am, when I turn it on (fully charged and plugged in), it won't boot. The machine makes a little noise, then the sleep light comes on. It never even gets to the "chime" to show that the system is loading.
    I've tried the following:
Reset the PRAM - it won't do it
Start in safe mode - it won't do it
Startup from Install disk - it won't do it
Access the drive in firewire Target mode - it won't do it
Reset the SMC - no change
All it does, is turn on the sleep light, spin the DVD drive (because I put the install DVD in) and nothing else.
    Any ideas?
I have a Time Machine Backup that is 2-3 weeks old, but I'm still likely to lose some of my photos, emails, etc, if this is a hard drive again.
    Please help!

Did you do anything in particular to get it to boot up? If I could get mine to boot then I could work with it. I've got an external monitor that might connect, but if not, I should be able to share the screen from my Mac Mini. But I can't get it to boot.
Also, what time zone are you in? Since the same problem happened to us both on the same day, I wonder if something in the date is causing a failure in sleep/wake. I've had my fingers crossed that when tomorrow rolls around it will boot up again. Crazy, perhaps, we'll see. You give me hope.

  • Old mini won't boot; blinking indicator

    Hi all...
I have an old mac mini that belonged to my daughter. It hadn't been used in a while when i received it, but I thought I'd try it anyway. To my surprise, it booted and ran fine for about a week before it just froze up. Soft reboot attempts were fruitless, so i powered the unit down and tried to bring it back up, resulting in the blinking power indicator. It's a 4 blink series that repeats. Any suggestions?
    Thanx!

You can find information on what the blinking light means by clicking here
According to the document your mini is unable to find any working RAM. It is possible that it has simply become dislodged, but RAM does fail.

  • T61p - won't boot, no lights...

I was using my laptop this morning, and spilled tea nearby - got my USB keyboard (which I cleaned up), but didn't get _anything_ on my laptop or the docking station. I confirmed the docking station and AC Adapters work via a colleague's laptop, but my laptop simply won't turn on.
I don't get any lights on the LED display. Nothing.
The docking station won't recognize it - no power lights on there when it gets plugged in.
It's a 6460 DVU model, with the Advanced Docking Station, almost a year old.
    Thus far, I've tried:
    1) Having another similar model use the AC Adapter and Dock.
    2) Tried a battery from another system.
    3) Tried the '10-press+30' ESD discharge
    4) Tried the '15-press+30' ESD discharge
    5) Tried w/ Battery
    6) Tried w/o Battery
    7) Tried w/ DVD drive in bay
    8) Tried w/o DVD drive in bay
AC Adapter is the 90W 20V model.
    Battery is the extended model.
I have not yet tried removing the RAM.
Right after the 'incident' I moved the laptop (in dock) so it wouldn't get anything on it. It was on at first. I noticed it had turned off (I think it went into hibernation or something), so I undocked it and placed it elsehwhere entirely out of the way while I finished cleaning up and cleaned the USB keyboard I have for the Docking station.
When I went to start it, nothing happened. Initially the dock registered it and I think the LED signaled it; but it wouldn't turn on. So I removed it from dock again and it still wouldn't turn on. I tried removing the battery, and after that I got nothing period from there-on-out.
I noticed the following similar threads (from which I got some of the steps tried above), but none either have a solution or helped:
    http://forums.lenovo.com/lnv/board/message?board.id=T_Series_Thinkpads&thread.id=32136
    http://forums.lenovo.com/lnv/board/message?board.id=T_Series_Thinkpads&thread.id=260

    http://forums.lenovo.com/lnv/board/message?board.id=T_Series_Thinkpads&thread.id=31582
The problem seems to be very similar to the last one (thread.id 31582), but no one has replied there.
    Anyone have any ideas?
I checked on Lenovo's support site and the system is still in warranty, so I'm about to call it up. But I thought I'd try here too - you know how supports calls usually are. (Fortunately this is my first w/ Lenovo; may be they're different. Not likely, but here's hoping.)
    Ben

    Hi,
The exact thing happened to me recently, spilled tea on the keyboard ,disconnected from power source turned off and wiped it, turned it back on it worked, but when the battery was running low..... i connected to teh a/c adaptor and it would not recognize it, now when i turn it on the power indicator led does not glow and does not boot but if i disconnect and press power source i get a battery symbol blinking..... so if you have found any solution i would like to hear from u. unfortunately i do not have a warranty and the place where i gave it for repair could not fix it.please PM me. Thank you very much.
    cheers,

  • Hp pavilion dv7-4171us not booting. blinking lights

Hi, I'm unsure as to whether I'm posting this in the correct section. My problem is the following: My computer doesn't turn on. (It was working fine last night.) I can hear the cooler, but nothing else. The caps lock blinks once, and F12 is on all the time. I read that that particular way of blinking means "CPU not functional", but I have no clue as to what to do with that information.  I checked on the forum, and though I found the same problem, it was a different PC and the problem was not solved. I would like some help, and instructions on what to do. Thanks.Sol

Maybe... it depends on exactly why the drive has failed and how far gone it is.
You may be able to find an adapter that plugs into the sata hard drive and into a USB port on your laptop. Maybe TigerDirect.com or Ebay? Once you have the new hard drive installed and the operating system back in place, you can plug it in and try to access the drive through Windows Explorer.
If this doesn't work, and depending on how badly you need the files, you can download something like Hiren's Boot CD which has a number of tools in it that may allow you to access the data, but that may require a significant amount time and effort to understand and use the tools properly.

  • Toshiba A105 wont boot, blinking lights.

My friends toshiba A105 wont boot, it has no display, fans dont even spin up, power button does nothing. All it does is the battery and AC lights blink green every couple seconds when it's plugged into AC. tried it with the battery out too. Any idea whats wrong, is this some kind of error code? I can take it apart if I have to. I did once before because the fan stopped working and had to be replaced.

Possibly an error code. Do they blink any particular pattern? (usually four sets, ie 2-1-3-1 where each number is the number of blinks between the long pause).
WIth out knowing much more I am going to hazard a guess and say maybe power system error. The first thing I would check is the voltage coming out of your power adapter.

  • Won't boot, blinking cursor, F8 doesn't work

I have a laptop with a Windows 7 and Debian Linux dual boot configuration and the Windows partition doesn't boot anymore. I just get a black screen with blinking cursor and no disk activity. F8, F5 and tab don't do anything, and cause it to beep if I keep
pressing them. This is on a BIOS system with MBR partitioning. So far I've tried:
    chkdsk c: /f /r /b and sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=c:\windows -- neither found any errors.
bootrec /fixmbr and bootrec /fixboot -- this restored the default Windows bootloader and made it go directly to the blank screen without the GRUB menu.
bcdboot c:\windows /s c: -- tried with and without the "/s C:" and tried deleting C:\boot first. Neither had any effect.
Backed up and deleted all partition table entries other than C: (note, this system didn't have a System Reserved partition). Repeated bootrec and bcdboot commands. No change.
I am about ready to back everything up and do a fresh install, but I'm really curious as to what could be screwed up here. I feel I have a moderate understanding of the NT 6 early boot process. I've remade everything up through Boot Manager, which should
at least get me a boot selection menu with F8, but I'm getting nothing.

Thanks for your reply. I actually have the Linux side of it under control. At present, to simplify things for fixing Windows, I've used dd to save the first few dozen sectors of my drive, deleted partitions other than the Windows one, and restored the
Microsoft bootloader. So long as I don't create new partitions in that "free" space, I can bring back my Linux and Grub simply by restoring those backed up sectors.
I'd like to get Windows working again and then restore the Linux stuff. At this point I am probably just going to do a fresh install, but I would love to know what can go wrong and cause this. MBR, PBR, C:\bootmgr and everything in C:\boot have been re-created
fresh and should be fine. AFAIK this much ought to get me at least a boot menu when I press F8 regardless of the state of the rest of the Windows system.
For Linux backup I usually just use tar and manually remake partition tables and install Grub should I need to restore the backup. For Windows I often use ntfsclone, which works similarly to Acronis or Ghost, only copying sectors that
are in use. I've actually successfully backed up and restored Windows XP before using just tar, mkfs.ntfs and ms-sys, though system and read-only attributes were lost, and I haven't tested it on Vista, 7 or 8.

  • BIOS won't boot freshly installed Arch [solved]

    Hello
Last night I did a complete wiping of my hard drive on  my old HP620 laptop in order to start my ideal Arch setup from the scratch.
I decided to give GPT a try, since I've been sick of the brain damaged MBR all those years. I did the install as usual, using cgdisk
to partition the drive within the freshly created GUID partition table. I made up 5 partitions, with the leading 1MiB BIOS boot partition,
which I created inside the first 40-2047 sector boundaries and set it to type ef02.
Everything has been alligned properly and passed without any errors. I partitioned the drive as follows:
    quetzalcoatl% sudo gdisk -l /dev/sda
    GPT fdisk (gdisk) version 0.8.10
    Partition table scan:
    MBR: protective
    BSD: not present
    APM: not present
    GPT: present
Found valid GPT with protective MBR; using GPT.
    Disk /dev/sda: 625142448 sectors, 298.1 GiB
    Logical sector size: 512 bytes
    Disk identifier (GUID): 1DC6DA85-2730-4101-ADA1-69EA884CC1B7
Partition table holds up to 128 entries
First usable sector is 34, last usable sector is 625142414
Partitions will be aligned on 8-sector boundaries
Total free space is 362996373 sectors (173.1 GiB)
Number Start (sector) End (sector) Size Code Name
    1 40 2047 1004.0 KiB EF02
    2 2048 52430847 25.0 GiB 8300
    3 52430848 85985279 16.0 GiB 8300
    4 85985280 94373887 4.0 GiB 8200
    5 94373888 262146047 80.0 GiB 8302
    sda1 is BIOT boot partition, sda2 is /, sda3 is reiserfs /var, sda4 for swap and sda5 is /home.
I formated every partition prior to mounting and installing the base system, except for sda1 which
I left intact (no formatting, just the cgdisk part of creating and chosing type).
At the end, I did the grub installation and configuration:
    pacman -S grub-bios
    grub-install --target=i386-pc --recheck /dev/sda
    pacman -S os-prober
    grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
after which I unmounted and rebooted, but the BIOS refused to boot into the system. It came up with the "Non
system disk or disk error". The only way of booting into the system remains to use the Arch installation CD,
and chose "Boot from hard drive" option.
I tried adding the boot flag to the BIOS boot partition using "parted /dev/sda set1 bios_grub on", and even faking
and adding bootable flag to BIOS boot partition using the MBR's fdisk since gdisk hasn't got the option to.
    Nothing helped.
Pacman says GRUB version is grub 1:2.02.beta2-4. Should I try going with syslinux or my BIOS (which I hadn't been updating at all)
is perhaps too old or buggy to cope with the GPT? I don't want to convert to MBR, if technically would be possible to boot using GPT.
    What should I do?
    Thanks in advance,
    Luth

    Hi Luther,
As the thread hasn't been marked as solved I hope this will help:
    1. The standard partition table type used by BIOS systems is MBR/MSDOS. Any PC released prior to Windows 8 should be a BIOS system. GPT is a newer partition table type used as standard with UEFI systems (i.e. post Windows 8). To make life simple, it is recommended to stick to the standard partition type appropriate for your system.
    2. The performance gain you would get using Reiserfs - I suspect - would be negligable. Ext2/3/4 would be a better choice, particularly as they are easy to use and are very popular (i.e. better chance of getting advice and support if you need it).

  • X201 Won't Boot: Blinking Cursor

    Hello,
This is my second post on this topic. The system in question is a brand new X201 Tablet PC, quad core. I purchased it specifically because Lenavo has full support for XP - I have been telling others how great Lenavo is about XP support - drivers, OEM utilities, everything fully working and supported on XP. Lenavo even has a Intel Turbo Boost "driver" for XP so it does not show as a "yellow bang" in the Device Manager. I appreciate all this.
Now, the problem: When I insert my XP boot drive, the BIOS will not boot off of the drive. The BIOS does access the drive and can see it/test it properly. I have tried this with the same system image using both an SSD and a mechanical drive, so I know it is not a drive issue. It is also not a driver issue, I actually have the necessary AHCI drivers installed on my XP installation, and I also tried it with SATA set to compatibility mode.
The same XP drive works just fine on any other computer - including Sager desktop replacements, Alienware m11x, HP TX2Z tablet, among others. Re-installing everything is NOT an option, this production XP image has been used since 2007 and has seen countless hours of installation, application configuration, and many other settings that would cost more in time than the amount paid for the X201 Tablet.
The BIOS does not even "bother" to read the boot sector or something. I really need this working. Is there a fix for the BIOS? Is there something that needs to be done to the XP drive (NOT a new install, but an EXISTING install) to fix it? Please, help! At the very least, if this issue cannot be resolved, I am hoping Lenavo will authorize a full refund on my system. I have all original parts and packaging. The system, as of this writing, is under 24 hours old.
    Mimar

I've got 3 X201s that really act funny when it comes to working with the PE recovery partition and my PE utilities. In order to get them to boot  Preinstall Environments we change the SATA configuration to compatibility in BIOS once we have done what we need to do in the PE we have to change them back to AHCI to boot into the pre-installed operating system.  You might try changing this setting and see if it makes a difference for you.

I gave my Toshiba X205-S7483 to my brother to use and about a year ago I was told it wasn't working anymore. I couldn't work on it at the time and a friend of my mom offered to take a look at it. This guy must have been after something else because he took it apart and gave me back a bag of parts. I have to laugh at bs like that because life is too short. So the laptop stayed as a bag of parts for about a year. Sad I know. Reminds me of the old Pixar movie about the sad little Lamp and toaster. Anyways, I decided to make an effort to bring this baby back to life. I took the time and put it back together. The problem is still there but I believe everything is there and I didn't break anything else. I have been reading around in the forums and the only other posts I have found refer to a situation where the CD drive works, the fans spin and the Hard drive fire up. In some the computer doesn't post. However in my situation I have a power light which leads me to believe the MotherBoard has power but I don't have anything else really. The battery light and charge lights are working as well. I used a multi meter to verify proper voltage at the charger output. I have yet to pull it back apart enough to test voltages on the motherboard. If anyone has any advice on what to look at specifically that would be awesome. I plan on checking for a fuse around the power supply. Only other thought is to buy another board. I would like to fix this if I can. I like to tinker so I'm in no hurry.

Have you tried running it on an external monitor?  If the lights work, fan spins, etc, but you have no display, even with an external monitor, it's either a video card or motherboard issue.

  • 42RV535U won't boot. Yellow light blinks 3 times.

The title mostly says it all.  After a power outage ( AC disconnected ), my 42RV535U won't boot.  The yellow light keeps blinking 3 times.
I have tried disconnecting, waiting, then reconnecting the power and have tried different outlets.
Any ideas of what I can do to get it to boot, or to further debug/diagnose the problem?
