[W520 audio] This will make you laugh (or cry)

The biggest dissapointment for me with my W520 was the unusable mic and speakers (for skype, presentations, movies etc).
Every other laptop I have owned is far far superior.
Today I was asked to fix a brand new dell Inspiron 15R.  The Supplier had put on it a plain copy of Windows 7 with no dell drivers, so the trackpad was not working, no option to sleep on battery low etc.
I noticed it was using the generic windows audio drivers, but mic and sound was fine (skype conferences etc. were good). I downloaded and installed the dell drivers anyway.  Guess what - they are conexant, the same as on the terrible sounding W520.  After insatllation, the mic was unusable - got the same underwater "bwa-bwa-bwa" just like on the Think.  I disabled all the "enhancements", and it was somewhat better, but still worse.
I never managed to solve the problem accptably on the think - I take a Toshiba when I need to have a skype conference or use someone elses machine.
How to Conexant get away with supplying such rubbish to big names for so many years without anyone noticing?
One thing did shock me - both machines have a quad core, high end graphics & 1080p panels.  Side by side, the Dell lasted >6h with screen on full doing nothing (6 cell battery), the Think lasted <2h (9cell).  Both machines throttled the CPU down  to 800MHz.
Sorry, posted it in wrong goup - should have been in thinkpad forum.

Have you seen this giant thread about sound on the W520?
http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/W-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/W520-Sound-Enhancement-Thread/td-p/442761
Sound on the W520 is awful with default settings and isn't great even with these enhancements but it's much better.  Basically, replace the Conexant drivers with some stuff from Dolby.  I've used my W520 for skype many times with no problems.
I have the same CPU in my W520 as you and with the 9 cell battery I get significantly more than 2 hours, I'd say 4-5 hours now (battery is over a year old) with normal use and more like 5+ when the battery was new.  Maybe check your power settings, I don't have anything set out of the ordinary.  Most of the options on balanced type settings when on battery.

  • This will make you Smile

    I came across this whilst browsing today and it did make me laugh. So I thought I`d put it here and maybe it will put a smile on all those (me included) who have had bad days with BT.
    Sorry - the link has been blocked so here it is in it`s entirety
    Enjoy
    Dear Mr. BT,
    Thank you for the email from your BT Migration Team regarding the network upgrade on my line, due to take place last Wednesday, the 20th July.
    I must confess to a wry smile when I read your statement that I might temporarily lose the use of my phone for ‘up to 10 minutes’, because the words "over" and "optimistic" sprang to mind ‐ curiously enough in that very order.
    I was right, wasn’t I?
    Now although life is short, at the time I felt that I could live with not having a phone or internet connection for 10 minutes because I would be at work but even if I hadn’t been, rather than checking online to see if I’d won Tuesday’s Euromillions Lottery, I could instead have used the time at home constructively - perhaps to read a book for a little while, do the washing‐up or even listen to that quaint old thing we used to call the radio.
    I wasn’t surprised therefore on the 20th at midday to receive a text at work from my son informing me that the broadband wasn’t working. I replied explaining that you were upgrading the line to a new fibreoptic, mega‐sonic speed internet connection and that he should ‘wait a few minutes’.  He told me that it didn’t matter because he was going out.
    I was a little surprised however to receive a text from my wife at 2.37pm who informed me that the phone wasn’t working.  I told her that the Mr BT’s Migration Team were busy fiddling with their knobs to make our line ‘better’ (she’s not very technical) and that they were probably taking a long lunch and the phone would work again soon.
    I was more than a little surprised when arriving home at 7.00pm to discover that you still hadn’t finished.
    Nor had you finished by midnight.
    My surprise increased dramatically on getting up the next morning to find I still had a dead phone and an internet connection speed of zero mega‐gigaflops per second.
    Indeed this surprise was nothing compared to my astonishment on reaching work and reading another email from your BT Migration Team telling me that my upgrade was now "complete".  You will not be surprised to learn that at this point the words: “No it **bleep** well isn’t” issued forth from my lips in quite a loud manner.
    Luckily, work is quite old‐fashioned and still had both an internet connection and phone line so I visited your BT web site to see if I could report this problem to you personally.  Of course on reaching the first help page I had to shut down the window that immediately popped up asking me if I’d found the help pages helpful because you hadn’t actually helped me at all yet.  Nevertheless I eventually found the page to check my line, entered my number and pushed the button and waited.
    “Your phone line isn’t working” said the resulting page.
    Really? You do amaze me.
    “Would you like to report this fault?”.  Yes please.  I pushed the button and waited again.
    On seeing: “By which method would you prefer to be kept informed as to the progress of the repair?”, I obviously chose ‘by text’ as opposed to other methods because, funnily enough, I DON’T HAVE A PHONE OR AN INTERNET CONNECTION AT HOME (AND I DON'T OWN AN OWL!)
    It’s at this point that I’d like to congratulate you Mr Bee.  Within three minutes, you had texted me not once, but twice.
    The first to was tell me you’d received my report and the second was to inform me when the repair would be carried out.
    Well done BT!
    Even my youngest son would not have been able to input letters on his phone that fast and he even uses both thumbs to do it.  I think you should consider contacting the Guinness Book of World Records to see if you can enter.  I was very impressed at your ruthless efficiency and you didn’t even use the abbreviation ‘U’ or ‘R’ once.
    I was not so impressed to read the second text however. It said: “Your repair will be completed by 5.00pm ….” (Good so far)....
    "…..on Tuesday, July 26th” !
    SIX days ??? Are you having a laugh??  What has happened to the BT Migration Team?  Have they all flown South to escape the English Summer?  And how can you possibly confuse the figure of ‘10’ with ‘8,640’ minutes??
    Today, thinking that you may have mis‐texted, I arrived at work and phoned you instead.  During the ensuing long, one‐sided conversation with your automated robot system I think I must have pressed more buttons on the telephone than Neil Amstrong did during the entire Apollo 11 mission to the moon and back.  Eventually, the she‐bot told me that the nice repair man would begin to LOOK at my problem on the 26th!!
    You mean that you’re not actually working on it now??  Have the BT Migration Team migrated to Homebase to exchange that fibre‐optic cable that must be just 6 inches too short to reach my socket??
    “There is a problem at our exchange” I am told.  A problem?  Clearly!  Has it been nuked??  Have you lost the key and are unable to gain entry??  Have you checked under the mat?
    Is Rupert Murdoch a shareholder in your company?  Did he perhaps hack into my mobile and overhear me say several dubious things about him and government conspiracies and this is his way of getting revenge?
    Yes, we have mobile phones to ‘fall back on’ but some of us don’t have posh contracts with one million free minutes and unlimited web surfing (Oh, yes – I remember that).  Some of us are on pay‐as‐you‐go because some of us have too much month left at the end of the money after paying the prices for your telephone line rental , calls and broadband.
    Fortunately I don’t feel alone right now.  If it’s a problem at the exchange there are probably thousands of people in the same boat as me.  In fact, I’m going to phone our friends up the road and see how they’re doing.
    Oh, no. I can’t can I?
    I hope it’s not seriously going to take that long and I do hope the Migration Team are having a nice holiday.
    Yours Sincerely,
    Keith Hunt
    Needless to say Keith had a call from BT on his mobile less than two minutes after BT received his complaint!  Quite impressive.  But when asked the obvious question as to when it would be fixed, the lovely lady replied:
    "Tuesday 26th". (!!??)
    But it didn't happen.  By the 29th, Keith was putting pen to paper again:
    Dear Mr BT.
    Happy anniversary for Wednesday.
    Did you think I’d forgotten? Don’t be silly – you should know me better than that by now.  No, indeed I would really liked to have called you or emailed on the exact date but I didn’t have a phone line or internet connection at that precise moment.
    A bit like now in fact.
    I know it’s only been a two or three days since my promised reconnection on the 26th but it seem so much longer, doesn’t it? It’s my understanding that a 1 year anniversary is known as ‘paper’ but I’m not sure what a 1 week’s anniversary would be called and obviously I can’t look it up on the internet. Logic dictates that it must be smaller and thinner than ‘paper’ so I’m going to guess at ‘hair’.
    So, happy ‘hair’ anniversary Mr Bee. In celebration I would have liked to have sent you one of my hairs for you to keep and cherish forever but what few I had, have now been torn out in frustration.
    To be brutally frank, I’m beginning to wonder where our relationship is heading.
    You teased me on Monday 25th didn’t you? I was thrilled when at around 1.15pm I received a phone call on my mobile, a full 1,440 minutes ahead of your predicted repair date, from a person who introduced herself as ‘Anne Engineer’. (She has quite a masculine voice doesn’t she?) Anyway, she explained that she was working on my fault and asked me what the symptoms were.  I explained that although I’m not a doctor, my amateur diagnosis was that ‘I had no phone line’. She promised to work on it.
    Thank you Anne.
    Then you teased me again on Tuesday with a text message. I had a huge smile on my face when I read: “Hello, this is Mr BT....” but sadly, that faded quite rapidly as I read the rest of your message: “…It’s still not fixed”. And that’s the last I’ve heard.
    It’s now Friday the 29th.
    After your hollow promise of me having to lose my phone connection for ten minutes, here we are – nine DAYS later (or twelve thousand, nine hundred and sixty minutes in Telecom time) and I still have no phone.
    I’m beginning to think that I was right in my first letter; in that your exchange has been hit by a small, tactical nuclear weapon. Given that, just like at Chernobyl, your Migration Team have probably had to draw straws to choose which unlucky person would ‘volunteer’ to enter the building.
    Anne lost, didn’t she?  This would certainly account for her deep voice and the fact that she now glows in the dark. I expect that my short length of fibre‐optic cable, sitting discarded in the corner of your exchange now has a radioactive half‐life of 50,000 years and I would recommend that Anne doesn’t touch it in case of any possible Health & Safety ramifications or potential litigation.
    Despite the stress over the last nine days I’m still in reasonable health, thank you for asking.  I just think that it’s a good job that I’m not elderly or infirmed and have the need for a ‘Careline’ panic button linked to my phone to press in cases of emergencies.  Guess why?  Go on – I dare you.
    Some elderly people are not as au fait with modern technology as you or I Mr Bee and may not have access to an iPhone, iPad, iMessengerPigeon or even a mobile phone.  I wonder how they’re getting on?
    I hope they’re not lying lifeless in the middle of their hallway at the moment ‐ just like my phone ‐ with a doctor standing over them asking: “And what exactly seems to be the matter?”.
    I like your new TV advert Mr Bee.  You know the one I mean?  The one where all the blue lines cascade through cities and towns into a house and into the lucky family’s computers, X‐boxes and PS3’s to show your unhindered and uninterrupted wi‐fi coverage.  Have you seen it?  You must remember it, yes ‐ no?
    It’s the one I paid for.
    My son and I have spent a long time over the last few days looking for our own blue lines and despite us opening all doors and windows and moving various large items of furniture, we still failed to allow in or discover one single line of any colour.
    So in my humble opinion, our wi‐fi is SO interrupted that I would have to describe it as being completely and utterly rupted.  Perhaps you could try opening a window at your end to see if that might help.
    I called your she‐bot automated person again today who has a marginally sexier voice than Anne.  I took a very positive attitude about it – for me to press so many buttons in such rapid succession is good practice for using our game console’s hand controller because usually I’m rubbish at playing the online version of ‘Call of Duty’.  The good news is that it’s been so long since my son has played online he might have forgotten everything and I might stand a chance of beating him.  I’m about to write to the game’s software team suggesting they create a new  ‘BT ‐ The Final Decimation’ level. I’m very much looking forward to that.
    Phoning the she‐bot was a bit like a computer game actually – after hours of battling through many levels, you think you’ve won when all of a sudden you’re told by the end‐of‐level Boss to ‘press button 2 to continue’ and then all you hear is: “Thank you for calling BT. Goodbye” and you have to start the game again. It’s not as addictive as playing Worms or Bejewelled I have to say.
    I’m hoping my phone will work soon Mr BT.  My voicemail is probably full and I’m looking forward to making and receiving calls again.
    I hope the very first call I get is from your Subscribers & Accounts Department.
    It’s been SUCH a long time and we have SO much to talk about.
    Yours in baldness,
    . . . it must be remembered that the sea is a great breeder of friendship. Two men who have known each other for twenty years find that twenty days at sea bring them nearer than ever they were before, or else estrange them.

    Guess you didn't read the manual which says:
    "This optical drive reads and writes to standard-size CDs and DVDs."
    and
    "The SuperDrive in your MacBook Pro supports standard 12 cm (4.7 inch) discs. Irregularly shaped discs or discs smaller than 12 cm (4.7 inches) are not supported."
    so I'm not sure a sticker would have been of much help.

  • This will make you think

    Ok here it is, i have a max limit of 201 thread running at once, i have a class object called Thread Tracker which i have synchronized to keep the number of threads running. Now if 201 thread are running no other threads can start, if a thrwad finnishes it subtracts one from the threadtracker class (yes it is synchonized) and than another thread is able to run. However eventually i get to a point when all 201 thread are waiting for tht thread running to drop below 201, but it never will because they are all waiting.
    See im creating a web crawler and the problem is ill start with one site it could have 6 link on that page so it creates htread for all those pages and all the links on those pages, See bellow.
    1 - 6 - 36 - 216 - 1296
    6 is just a estimated number of new urls on each page, but hopefully u can see wat i mean, soo the porblem is that the number of threads being created massively outnumbers the number of threads finnishing and i end up with a dead lock.
    The reason i limit the number of thread running is because if i dont i reach max mem usage and get memory errors, i can prob go to about 800 threads but im using 200 as a test.
    lol to tell ya the truth i have no idea wat todo. ne help would be great.

    Maybe a workers and boss architecture?
    Let the Boss start with a queue seeded with the initial URL. If there are items in the queue and no workers, the boss employs a new worker and hands the worker the item in the queue. The worker reports new URLs back to the boss. The boss puts the new items into the queue.
    The workers also report "job done, ready for another" to the Boss. If the Boss reaches max employees, it continues to add new items to the queue while waiting for this report, then hands an item to the next free worker.
    Since only the Boss handles the queue, you shouldn't have a deadlock problem. You can also give the Boss some logic about which URLs are the best candidates for crawling, since it will see the workload (size of queue) and number of employees.
    The Boss could also send memos to the workers telling them "due to overloaded queue, please wait no more than Xx millis before giving up and reporting in "job done, ready for another."
    As in the physical world, the Boss could be very intelligent or quite the moron. Up to you to avoid Dilbert.

  • When listening to nano 6th gen with dock the audio book will make beeping noises and then switch to a song.

    While listening to my 6th gen nano on a JBL dock the audio book will make beep noises and then swith to a song on my nano.  Any idea?  Thanks.

    I saw your other post, but thought I would reply here as well. It is all about getting that headset seated all the way. If you can see any silver of the plug, it is not in far enough. Push harder. If it just won't go in, look in there to see if it is blocked. The bottom of the headset port is white, so if it appears all dark at the bottom... something is in there.

  • Selective Developing...This will Rock & you know it!!

    I think it would be really cool if the Develop Module incorporated (what I hope to coin) an "Exposure Mask", or "Develop Mask". Just like photoshops adjustment layers. Its not direct "pixel manipulation" but more of a selective "whatever" (Meta-)adjustment.
    Let's say you photographed your subject and there is just this one area of the image that you would like to adjust. well, the problem is that all areas are adjusted globally, and the image would have to be exported to photoshop to make this one adjustment. With "Exposure Masks" one could apply this layer (or layers if need be) that would isolate the area(s) of the image that you would like to adjust--be it Exposure, curves, color, saturation, etc. Once the mask is filled in, an "Edge Blur" or "Fuzziness" slider will intuitively taper the mask as needed--Or, Like the clone tool's intuitive size adjustment when the mouse is on the border of the circled area.
    hmmm, maybe even a selective focus enhancement.
    the list goes on and the application is endless. Leave compositing, post process and Polish to photoshop, and make Lightroom the premiere Raw development tool that it is destined to be.

    This is THE feature a LOT of us photographers are waiting for!!! Take a look at LightZone... if Adobe doesn't include this feature fast I'm sure a lot of photographers will have a very serious look at LightZone and it's incredibly fast updated versions...
    Go Adobe, make us use Lightroom the xway we really worked in the darkroom, let us use our hands!

  • This will interest you ...

    hi ,
    i found something odd while coding .
    tell me can a thread enter in any other states such as wait(), sleep() etc.. without even having started the thread .
    if you say yes then please explain how.
    what i found is that i was able to use sleep() method without even calling t.start() and when i checked the t.isAlive() it showed me a "false" implying that thread is not running ,then how come t.sleep(int) was working which was a statement below t.isAlive() ,please explain.
    eg
    no t.start anywhere in the program
    run() method was called implicitly by me as run() on some click event
    here i checked t.isAlive //which said false => t is not running
    very next i had t.sleep() // it worked
    bie regards

    I will try to explain it! But please don't rely on my reply as these are only my assumptions.
    *You had created the thread, but hadn't called start, right.
    ->that means thread is ready(object exists), but the command to the OS havn't been given yet to create new execution unit.
    *sleep is a method of Thread object, that sets any flag, which is used by the execution unit to pause execution for a certain time.
    *so sleep did its work, (setting the flag). that is another thing it is not being used as execution unit doesn't exist.
    *Now isAlive checks the status of execution unit only, not of sleep flag.
    *that's why sleep worked.
    *any objection to anybody about it. Please comment.

  • This will get you using your head.

    Hi,
    I am trying to convert a search algorithm so it will iterate one step at a time every time the method is called instead of doing the whole sort at once. I have done it with a bubble sort
    FROM:
         public static void bubble(int bNumbers[])
              int i, j, temp;
              for (i = (bNumbers.length - 1); i >= 0; i--)
                   for (j = 1; j <= i; j++)
                        if (bNumbers[j-1] > bNumbers[j])
                             temp = bNumbers[j-1];
                             bNumbers[j-1] = bNumbers[j];
                             bNumbers[j] = temp;
         }INTO
         public static void bubble(int bNumbers[])
              if(jB != 10)
                   int temp;
                   if (bNumbers[jB-1] > bNumbers[jB])
                        temp = bNumbers[jB-1];
                        bNumbers[jB-1] = bNumbers[jB];
                        bNumbers[jB] = temp;
                   if(jB==iB)
                        jB=0;
                        iB--;
                   jB++;
         }I am trying to do the same with an insertion sort. I have been trying for the last 2 hours and it is reallying starting to annoy me. Can anyone have a go.
    Insertion Sort algorithm:
         public static void insertion(int iNumbers[])
              int i, j, index;
              for (i=1; i < iNumbers.length; i++)
                   index = iNumbers;
                   j = i;
                   while ((j > 0) && (iNumbers[j-1] > index))
                        iNumbers[j] = iNumbers[j-1];
                        j = j - 1;
                   iNumbers[j] = index;
    Thanks
    John Cleary.

    Sounds like a producer-consumer scenario. I have done some animation out of some graph algorithms, and here is what I did for a step-by-step execution.
    I used a separate thread for the algorithm, and it checked a flag to see if the user wanted step by step execution, and if so it waited on a lock. When the user signaled for another step, it was just
    lock.notify();
    Is that ok for you?

  • Question I hope this will make sense

    okay my question is
    last weekend I formatted my hard drive
    BUT I saved Lightoom on another drive
    I was working on some images in Lightroom, BUT forgot to export those images
    I opened Lightroom in that drive and can see the images, but of course
    Lightroom is saying those images are offline or missing
    is there anyway I can just reconnect those images without spending more time
    going back and working on the same images twice?
    Also the external drive that the images are on and Lightroom are the same drive
    BUT the drive has renamed itself
    thanks

  • Boy, do i have something that'll make people laugh and cry for me.

    well. the other day, i was listening to my 5G 30 Gig ipod video
    lemme add real quick
    i use this thing probably about 12 hours a day
    Every day
    So, its kinda big for me to lose
    Well, any PC builder knows that PC's have to have the front USB ports hooked up on the motherboard, well. i was tired and i hooked the positive and negative up backwards
    Long story short?
    i plugged my ipod in.
    And long behold
    Smoke!
    Yeah, it smoked it
    the dock connector stopped working after that, i had to take it apart and disconnect and reconnect the battery
    Amazingly. it turned on
    i was completely shocked
    Now, when you try to plug it into a PC (or a mac, yes, im a mac user too)
    it wont charge or do anything
    BUT, if you put it on a dock, it says charging, but never does
    And no, my ipod warranty expired
    4 days before this happened..
    Thanks for reading, any reponses would make my day.

    I kinda know hnow you feel.
    I had my headphoes in my bag one day and i went to use it
    I problem was that it had got squeased/smahed in the bag
    the little gray trim that has the speaker got a little bubble like action going on
    I was mad since my warrenty had ended
    so i tryes to fix it so i used tape did not work the headphones were the older one that are bigger
    and the tape kept scraching the insides of my ear. I had an iPod with no headphones
    how bad is that but I got some random headphones
    ps i tryed glue no luck but i got a free nano with my mac so all is good, thay are smaller then the old one thank god (have smaller ears)

    BLUETOOTH
    Bluetooth is a short range radio link meant to replace the necessity of cables to connect portable and/or fixed electronic devices. The Bluetooth protocol uses a combination of packet and circuit switching to transmit data through variable hop frequency. Connectivity across a network is provided according to time slot division. It provides point-to-point or point-to-multipoint connection, creating links for between 2-8 devices (including the initiating Master/host and its Slave/s) to form a piconet. Multiple piconets that are linked together form a scatternet. A Master in one piconet can be a Slave in another, and vice versa, to form an inter-connected network. Dial-Up Networking, Fax, Headset, LAN Access, and SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) Access functionality all use serial port communication profiles and virtually emulate RS232 (or similar) serial cable port protocols.Ê A Bluetooth management application is necessary in each device to facilitate the serial port emulation. Radio Frequency Communications (RFCOMM) is used to transport user data, modem control signals and configuration commands.
    When using a cellular device equipped for Bluetooth communications to transmit data over a cellular network, the Bluetooth link must be established as an initial protocol layer and the cellular network link is negotiated in a second protocol sequence through the cellular device. For example, when attempting to connect a Pocket PC device to the GPRS data network using a cellular phone as a negotiator via a Bluetooth link. The connection is initiated and controlled by the Pocket PC device, but dependent on the SIM functionality available through the cellular phone to negotiate and establish the connection to the cellular network. In this capacity, known as a SIM Access Profile, the cellular phone functions as a Server (or ÒaccepterÓ) while the Pocket PC device acts as a Client (or ÒinitiatorÓ). A Client may have access to only one Server with a SIM at any given time of active connection. Designation of a Client versus Server role is independent of the deviceÕs discover/discoverable status.
    To ensure secure communication between the Client and Server devices, several conditions must be met. The Client and Server must be successfully Bonded (otherwise known as Paired) before setting up a SIM Access Profile or configuring the settings of a GPRS/GSM network connection. The SIM bearer (cellular phone) must be properly enabled to initiate authentication. The link between the Client and Server will be encrypted using the Bluetooth baseband and will be at a minimum of 64 bits. Each incident of authentication will be identified with a unique Passkey between the devices that must be in mutual agreement at the time of connection.
    Bluetooth transceivers operate in the 2.4 GHz ISM (Industrial Scientific Medical) band. In a majority of the countries in the world this band includes 2.400-2.4835 GHz. Please note that products that implement a reduced frequency band will not work with those that implement the full frequency band. These products that are reduced in frequency (perhaps distributed in different countries), are generally intended for use in a single market. As such, devices developed and/or purchased in Europe and Asia (for example) may not be compatible for use with devices from the United States.
    For more general information about Bluetooth development and technology, go to www.bluetooth.com, the official Bluetooth website. Select the link to Bluetooth technology & you to find links to Using Bluetooth technology, Products, and How it works. In the Using Bluetooth technology section, there is a link to view information about connecting a Mobile Phone with a Personal Computer. Here you can view links that include all currently supported and available devices that are applicable to your needs. This will be useful to verify the compatibility of your devices. You can find specific information about the technical details and requirements of modem data transmission using cellular technology with Bluetooth by proceeding to the Developer Information section and viewing the SIM Access Profile and v.1.1 Profiles documentation.

    GENERAL DIAGNOSTICS WITH BLUETOOTH
    * Make sure that your Bluetooth devices are compatible.
    * Your operating system should be current on all applicable software, driver, and firmware updates.
    * Verify that the Bluetooth functionality in both devices is turned ÒOnÓ.
    * Verify that the devices are currently bonded/ paired. This can often be difficult to assess with the Nokia 6310i. The phone may not show the devices as ÒActiveÓ, but the Bluetooth Manager will display that the devices are paired/bonded. Often the phone will display a Disconnected message. Disregard this message and continue with the instructions in the setup guide.
    * Ensure that the Bluetooth Dialup Modem is selected in the Connections (for Pocket PC devices), System Preferences/ Network (in Mac OS X), or Dial-Up Networking properties (in Microsoft Windows OS).
    * It may be necessary to attempt to connect multiple times to establish a GSM/GPRS connection. Do not be discouraged if you receive a connection error or receive a Disconnected message on your cellular phone. Due to interference or early product development, it may take several attempts to push the connection through all layers of the Bluetooth service and protocol stack. It is also possible, as is seen with the Nokia 6310i, for a Disconnect message to be given while transfer protocol layers of communication are still recognized and active. In this case, a temporary minor error (Òdata not availableÓ or Òcard not accessibleÓ) is the cause as the Client device attempts to initialize and access the SIM for data packet transfer.
    * Verify that you are not in the presence of equipment that may be interfering on the same (or possibly overlapping) radio frequency as your Bluetooth communication. This includes medical equipment, wireless 802.11 connectivity devices, other Bluetooth enabled cellular phones, airport communications, amongst other factors.
    * It may be necessary on some devices to alternate in the bonding/pairing process between setting the phone in Discover versus Discoverable mode, as is sometimes the case with the Sony Ericsson T68i.
    * Verify that your devices are fully charged.
    * Verify that you have GSM/GPRS coverage available at your location and that your wireless account is properly provisioned for data transmission with a modem over the network.
    * Check that your connection is using the correct Dialing Location properties and profile. For a GPRS connection, this should follow the instructions to include the letter G in each of the three dialing location fields of the Dialing Patterns specifications as well as verification that the phone number to be dialed is *99# and that the Area Code and Country Code fields are not included in your connection.
    Alternative methods of Pairing/Bonding for the Nokia 6310i and iPAQ 3800/3900 series device with Pocket PC 2002 Operating System
    If you are experiencing problems due to interference, or if your signal strength is not very strong, modifying the serial port connection may allow you to connect to the GPRS network.
    * Open the Bluetooth Manager application on your Pocket PC device.
    * Verify that the Bluetooth on your handset is currently On. (You may want to check the power level on your devices.)
    * If your Nokia 6310i is not seen as an available device, tap on Search and proceed to locate it and Save it to a group. Otherwise, tap on the Nokia 6310i icon.
    * Tap on Actions.
    * Select Set as Bluetooth Dialup Modem.
    * Tap Actions again.
    * Select Connect to COM 1.
    * Press Accept on the phone to connect with the Pocket PC device.
    * Enter a unique Passcode onto your handset.
    * You will have 10 seconds to enter the same Passcode/PIN code onto your Pocket PC device.
    * Your phone will notify you that you are connected. You can verify this by scrolling through the Bluetooth menu on your handset and selecting View active device.
    * You will have 3 minutes to proceed before your Bluetooth session will time out.
    * Proceed to connect using the usual methods outlined in the setup guide.
    * You will be notified that the Serial style= style=Port style=connection was terminated . Tap OK and continue anyway. It may take several attempts to get the Bluetooth stack to respond.
    * Press Accept to connect to the phone once more.
    * The phone will now notify you that a GPRS connection is in progress.
    The following method may also be useful if the bonding appears to be unstable and multiple attempts to connect through the Connection Settings fail:
    * Open the Bluetooth Manager application on your Pocket PC device.
    * On the phone, scroll to select Bluetooth from the main menu, then select Bluetooth and select Off.
    * Turn your phone off, then on again to fully reset its Bluetooth protocol stack.
    * On the Pocket PC device you should see the Nokia 6310i listed. Tap to select it.
    * Tap on Actions.
    * Select Remove bond with this device.
    * Tap on Actions again.
    * Select Remove this device.
    * Tap Yes when asked if you want to remove it from all groups.
    * Close all open windows on your Pocket PC device and tap on the Bluetooth icon on the lower left corner of your screen.
    * Select Turn radio off.
    * Soft reset your device according to manufacturerÕs instructions.
    * Tap on the Bluetooth icon on the lower right corner of your screen again and select Turn radio on.
    * Turn the phone back on, scroll to Bluetooth from the main menu, then select Bluetooth and select On.
    * Open the Bluetooth Manager application.
    * If you do not see your device listed, tap on Search.
    * Tick the box to select your phone, choose a group and select Save.
    * Tap OK.
    * Tap on the Nokia 6310i icon.
    * Tap on Actions.
    * Select Create bond with this device.
    * Enter a unique PIN code.
    * Press Accept on the phone when prompted to Pair with the Pocket PC device.
    * Enter the Passcode/PIN code. You will have 10 seconds to complete this task. (If you receive a Disconnected message on the phone, continue anyway.)
    * Proceed to set up your connection as usual through your Connection Settings.
    * If you are not connected the first time, tap Connect to try again immediately after you receive the Disconnected message on the phone. It may take several attempts to get the Bluetooth stack to respond.
    * Press Accept on the phone to accept the connection.
    * The phone will indicate that a GPRS connection is in progress.
    The processes for troubleshooting Bluetooth in a Windows environment are very similar to those of Pocket PC devices.
    * In the Bluetooth Manager application, proceed to click on the Nokia 6310i and select Unpair device, then proceed to turn the Bluetooth radio Off on the computer and on your phone. Reset both devices, then try again. This should clear any temporary problems in the Bluetooth service and protocol stacks.
    * It may be necessary to attempt to establish your GSM/GPRRS connection multiple times before you will actually be able to transmit data over the cellular network.
    * Verify adequate power level on each device.
    * Resolve any issues that may exist with your cellular account or wireless coverage in your location.
    * Other wireless electronic devices that operate in (or near) the Industrial, Scientific, and Medical bandwidth may provide significant interference. These include other cellular phones, 802.11 devices, medical equipment, airport communications, amongst other factors.
    * You must select secure encryption to be used when creating the bond with your devices in the Bluetooth Manager.
    USEFUL AT COMMANDS
    When GPRS doesn't appear to be working, or you just want to check that all is well, hopefully the following will prove useful:
    Check the phone
    Verify that GPRS is currently available in your location and that your cellular account is properly enabled for data transmission over the network using your device as a modem.
    If all appears well on the phone, head to HyperTerminal or your equivalent Terminal application and try some of the following style=to further query the status of your ability to communicate with the network:
    at+cgatt?
    If a value of '1' is returned, then we have GPRS attached. If the value is '0', then GPRS is currently deactivated (i.e. the service is either down or the user is not currently provisioned).
    at+cgatt=? will return the supported values for the command
    at+cgatt=1 will attempt to attach to the GPRS network
    at+cgdcont?
    This will allow you to check that the Access Point Name (APN) has been set correctly.
    A typical response will look something like this:
    +CGDCONT:1,"IP","proxy"
    If the APN is set incorrectly for the AT&T Wireless GPRS service, enter the following:
    at+cgdcont=1,"IP","proxy"
    at+cops?
    This will return the identity of the network operator.
    at+cgreg?
    This will return the network registration status.Ê One of the following values should be returned:
    0 - not registered, not searching
    1 - registered, home network
    2 - not registered, searching
    3 - registration denied by network
    4 - unknown

  • HT1229 How do I back up my entire iPhoto library to an additional hard drive.  I have a WD 1TB hard drive which I would like to use as a backup drive to my MacBook Pro.  What steps do I take to do this.  Thank you

    How do I back up myentire iPhoto library to an an additional hard drive,  I have a WD My Book 1TB hooked up to my MacBook Pro via USB 2 port.

    Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    Most Simple Back Up:
    Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
    Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
    Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store

  • Panther on B&W 350. Tell me if this will work.

    Well over a year ago, I gave my Mother-In-Law my old G3 350 B&W, rev2 machine after her G4 died. At the time, I could only get it to 10.2.8, (what I assumed to be) mostly because of the lack of RAM. Since then, I've installed more, and it's 576 now.
    I'd like to bump her up to 10.3.9. Here's the rub: She lives about 350 miles away, so it's not a quick hop over to their house. Is it possible to get an ATA drive, put it inside my MDD G4 (or even an external case, temporarily), install 10.3.9 on it, then bring it down there, next time I visit, and swap drives? Or is there going to be an issue with hardware reconciliation? And will I still need more RAM, even though the minimum required is 128?
    Essentially, I don't want to spend my entire visit dealing with a computer, especially one that I had issues with when I had it, because it was a rev1 board at the time; even though I fixed that issue, I still don't want to tempt fate, and would rather just install a whole new hard drive, port over the stuff I need to, like mail, and be done with it.
    Doable?
    MB Pro 2.16, MDD 1.25   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   10.4.8

    Thousands have done it before you, so no reason why you can't. Be sure to do some prior preparation. Be sure you have the retail Panther package and not some OEM discs (gray labels) or Upgrade-only discs. Panther came as three CDs that had black labels with a large gray "X". A fourth disc was the XCode Tools installer.
    Repair the hard drive and permissions. If Disk Utility cannot repair the drive then use Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro. Do not attempt to upgrade a drive that has problems.
    Backup her current system by making a bootable clone to an external hard drive. This will make recovery easier in case of problems. You can clone the drive using the Restore option in Panther's Disk Utility or by using the freeware utility Carbon Copy Cloner.
    Install Panther by doing an Archive and Install:
    How to Perform an Archive and Install
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
    Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
    Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • If you need cash better check this out...Attorney will show you how....

    First of all let me say that THIS IS NOT SPAM!, A LOTTERY, A SCHEME, A CHAIN
    LETTER OR A PIRAMID MLM.
    Although it may take the appearance of a "chain letter" it is actually a
    unique legitimate opportunity for individuals to start their own home based
    business by becoming Mailing List Creators and Providers by PROVIDING A
    SERVICE.
    Dear Friends, Please read this all the way through..Its perfectly legal and it does what it says it will do..No hidden fees..$6,00 will start you on the road to wealth..:
    Greetings: I am a retired attorney. A few years ago a man
    came to me with a letter. He asked me to verify the fact that this was legal to do. I told him I would review it and get back to him. When I first read the letter my client brought me, I thought it was some "off-the-wall" idea to make money. A week and a half later we met in my office to discuss the issue. I told him the letter he originally brought me was not 100% legal. My client then asked me to alter it to make it perfectly legal. I asked him to make one small change in the letter. I was still curious about the letter, so he explained to me how it works. I thought it seemed like a long shot, so I decided against participating. But before my client left, I asked him to keep me updated on his results. About two months later, he called me to tell me he had received over $800,000 in cash. I didn't believe him, so he asked me to try this idea and find out for myself. I thought about it for a couple of days and decided I really didn't have anything to lose, so I asked him for a copy of the letter. I followed the instructions exactly, mailed 200 copies, and sure enough, the money started coming in! It arrived slowly at first but coming in nonetheless. I kept a precise record of the earnings, and in the end, it totaled $978,493! I could hardly believe it. I met with my friend for lunch to find out exactly how it worked. He told me there are quite a few similar letters around, but this one is different because there are six names at the end of the letter, not five like some others. This fact alone results in your name being in far more returns. The other fact was the help I gave him, making sure the whole thing was legal, since no one wants to take the risk of doing something illegal.
    By now you are surely curious to know what small changes to make. If you sent a letter like this one out, in order to be completely legal, you must actually sell something in order to receive a dollar in return. So when you send a dollar to each of the names on the list, you must include these words, "PLEASE PUT ME ON YOUR MAILING LIST" and include your name and address. This is the key to the program. The item you will receive for the dollar you sent to the six people below is the letter. At the time I first tried this idea, I was earning a good living as a lawyer. But everyone in the legal profession will tell you there is a lot of stress that comes with the job. I told myself if things worked out, I would retire from my practice and play golf. I decided to try the
    letter again, but this time I sent 500 copies. Three months later, I had totaled $2,341,178! Here are a few reasons a person might give for not trying this program: Some people think they can never make a lot of money with anything this simple. Some are afraid they will be ridiculed for trying Some dream of large sums of money, but do nothing to actually achieve it. Some are just plain lazy. Some are afraid of losing their investment. They think this program is designed to beat them out of a few dollars. The system works if you will just try it. But you must follow the simple instructions EXACTLY, and in less than three months, you will receive $800,000 GUARANTEED! Keep what you are doing to yourself for awhile. Many will tell you it won't work and will try to talk you out of your dreams. Let them know of your success after it works.
    LETTERS FROM PARTICIPANTS IN THIS PROGRAM:
    Larry McMahon, Norfolk, VA Six months ago, I received this letter and ignored it. Five more came within a period of time and I ignored them also. I was tempted, but I was convinced that they were just a Hoax. After three weeks of deliberating, I decided to give it a try (not
    expecting much). Two weeks went by and nothing happened. The fourth week was unbelievable! I can't say I received $800,000 but I received $400,000. For the first time in years, I am debt free. I am doing this again, only this time starting with 500 posts.
    INSTRUCTIONS: Immediately send $1.00 to each of the six people on the list at the end of this letter. Wrap the dollar bill in a note saying "Please add me to your mailing list" and include your name and address. Copy this letter. You do not have to type it 200 times. Simply place your cursor at the top of the page, hold it and drag it all the way
    down to the end of the letter. Then click on "edit" and select "copy". Now open up a notepad file on your computer and put the cursor at the top of the page in the notepad, click on 'edit' and then select 'paste' and it will copy the letter for you onto your computer. Remove the name next to the #1 on the list and move the rest of the names up one position (#2 becomes #1, #3 becomes #2, etc.....) Then place your name in the #6 position. Then save it, make sure it is saved as a txt. file. This is very a very important step! When you have completed the instructions, take this letter and then go to (Google,Yahoo,Craigslist...) and type in (Money Making Message-board, or POST NEW MESSAGE OR JUST TYPE POST MESSAGE(THIS IS MUCH EASIER AND FASTER),...) and start posting your copy to 200 message boards, or more this is only the minimum, you can post as much as you like...The more copies you send the better the results. Keep a copy of this letter so you can use it a second time. Post it out again in six months, but Post it with the addresses you receive with each dollar. It will work better the second time. NOTE: This service is 100% legal - (Refer to title 18 section 1302 of the U.S. Postal & lottery laws) How does it work? When you send out 200 Posts, it is estimated that at least 15 people will respond and send you a $1.00. ($15.00) Those 15 will Post 200 Posts each and 225 people send you $1.00 ($225.00) Those
    225 people Post 200 Posts each and 3,375 people send you $1.00
    ($3,375.00) Those 3,375 people will post 200 posts each and 50,625 people send you $1.00
    ($50,625.00) Those 50,625 people will post 200 posts each and 759,375 people send you $1.00 ($759,375.00) At this point your name drops off the list, but
    so far you have received $813,615.00. P.S. When your money begins to come in, give the first 10% to charity with spirit and share a good fortune!

    #5.Craig Woods 8921 W. Courtland Ave. Milwaukee, WI 53225
    #6.John Goettge 5268 Seibert Hill RD SW New Philadelphia,Ohio 44663
    This really, really, works! I tried it once and I'm doing it again. First to be honest I only posted 145 posts and I didn't receive a lot only $6,689.00 in 3 months, at least this means that it really works, so this time I'm posting 604 posts and I've got so far in 2 months $15,640.00 this is really like a dream come true. So go on and try it
    trust me you've got nothing to lose.... Important tip - Cover money by paper fully by which it can not been seen in light, because postal employees do some cheat some times....ok. THIS IS YOUR CHANCE. THE PLAN IS SO SIMPLE, IT'S ELEGANT. DO NOT DELAY. START RIGHT NOW! YOUR RISK IS ABOUT $6 AS I SEE IT. THIS IS A LEGIMATE BUSINESS VENTURE THAT RESULTS IN TAXABLE INCOME. BE SURE TO FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS TO THE LETTER IF YOU ARE COMFORTABLE WITH BECOMING WEALTHY! GOOD LUCK.
