W520 battery died after 6.5 months. Not a recalled unit

Is there a way to resurrect a dead battery that failed way too soon? Seems it's the chip that has the problem.
I bought a second battery from Amazon to "back up" my original battery sent in the machine at purchase late October 2011. I have a 427637U that has had an mSATA and SSD 256 added to the chassis. Spinning HD in the optical bay. Usual stuff, right? I knew that there was only a chance that it was really new -- as advertised. All seemed to go well with this new battery but about a month ago it seemed to stop charging at 49% and then it actually would not power the computer a little while ago.
I ran the battery recall ID software and it returns a "product not covered" message. I do have Amazon helping me get something back from the seller of the second battery.
I ran the Lenovo Power Manager software "battery reset" routine but no help. The Power Manager says there's a battery error and confirms that it will not power the laptop. The stats are not at zero for voltage, etc., though.
I might have made this happen because once when the laptop was on AC and I took out the battery to swap to the other unit -- I noticed a real hiccup in the notifications area. I wish I could remeber exactly what I saw.
I hope Monday brings word the retailer willl swap it out, but I doubt it. I hope someone here has an idea (I *did* search a bunch of different query strings...)
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Solved!
Go to Solution.

This was sold as a Lenovo. It had the right labels, tags, etc., although those can be counterfitted. I looke closely at the typography, etc. Further, I looked at the numbers when I first received the battery and those looked OK although I didn't create a screenshot, which in retrospect I wish I had.
I am waiting for a reply from the seller and I will report back what they say. An Amazon rep promised that Amazon would want the seller to give me some kind of compensation. How much clout that has with the seller remains to be seen.
Thanks for replies. I guess no one knows a way to wake up the battery through a software frontal lobotomy on the embedded chip. My intuition says this is the issue. Disclaimer: I am not a registered Pyschic.

  • My battery died after 3 yrs and 3 months??????

I don't know if my ipod is the classic. I bought the 20 GB in July 2005.
Is this common for the battery to die after 3 years? I turned it on and it made this funny noise. Then a pic of the battery and the triangle with the ! showed up. What do I do now? Thanks

Apple will replace the battery for you. They replace the iPod with a refurbished item, so you lose whatever was on your iPod. Info is here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/battery/
Various third-party vendors will also replace the battery, or sell you a kit to do it yourself. The iPod does look like it's a totally seamless item, but it can be disassembled pretty easily. There are videos on YouTube that show how it's done, and most of the kit-sellers provide detailed instructions. Just Google "ipod battery replacement" and you'll find tons of sites. Look at ipodjuice.com - they have lots of information about battery replacement, disassembly, iPod model identification, etc (I'm not endorsing them, I just think their site is very informative).

  • Battery died after one year.  Will not charge.  Why?

I spent $125 on a nano last year and in 12 months it wont charge.  Yes I have it plugged into a wall outlet.  Has been for 14 hours now ans still wont charge.  Is the recommendation to buy a new one?

Scott - Your answer ultimately led me to the answer, albeit months later, after much internal deliberation and some trial and error... thanks!
Ruled out battery (as crazy as that sounds - it's had a bajillion cycles) as it didn't make sense that battery would charge but wouldn't work while awake. I have a friend whose battery is completely shot and his still works as long as magsafe is plugged in, and mine wouldn't even do that. tried another adapter and that worked. then tried mine in a different plug. so in the end, turns out I had a bum powerstrip... mag safe / battery recharge works properly when just plugged in somewhere different.
So no need to buy a new charger or battery (yet!)
    thanks to all,

  • Lenono Vibe X2 Battery Die even when phone is not being used

    HI,
I baught Lenovo Vibe X2 couple of months back, and I continuously noticed that the battery of my phone die within 4-5 hours. Even i am not using my phone at all it doesn't work for more then 7-8 hours.
I am seriously not able to understand what to do with this mobile. Having a new mobile in my hand with charger connected everywhere i go. This is not acceptable from such a big brand.
I would like to add one more thing, after use of 10-15 minute it heats up like a buring stove.
I upgraded it with the updates but nothing worked at all, and now i am in serious trouble as my job is to travel a lot.
Please suggest me what to do.
    Thanks,
    Santosh

This is not usualy for the X2. The X2 does not really heat up and the battery should last for at least a day with normal usage. I don't have the X2 but it should have about 4 to 5 hours of onscreen, that is when you have the screen on for 4 to 5 hours that is how long it should last. With moderate ussage you should last a day.
It could be either that you installed some apps that are killing your battery or you get some third party viruses or malware. If this would be the case you could reset the phone to factory settings and get everything that should not be there deleted and wiped out. I would not even do a back-up to make sure all is deleted fully and truly.
Second, your phone could have some hardware issue and for that you are best to cotact the service center and they might repair or exchange your unit. Finally, if you go the Settings > Power management > Power consumption details --- you will see what app or hadware is consuming your batter the most, and based on that you can act.

  • IPhone battery dying after few hours from 100% charge

Since I upgraded to the iOS 5.1 my battery life on the iPhone 4S has been ridiculous.
For example, I left my house at 740am with my phone on 100%, I have browsed a little (safari and facebook) for no more than 20-30 mins in total.  No apps are not running in the background as I ensure to close apps once i have finished with them. And now at 1400 I am left with 28% battery. i am not due to be at home until 1900.
Have I been unlucky with getting a dodgy iPhone from Orange?? the model is MD242B if that helps.
Also, notifications and banners are all turned off except for phone, messages, whatsapp, remainders, calendar.
I am careful not to over charge my phone, I do use an app called BatteryDoc to monitor my charging.
I always let my battery go flat before charging to 100% (with no trickle change), i believe this is a normal charge and what BatteryDoc advises i perform a full charge..
I am slowly regretting this phone after 6 months now.......
    any input is welcome.
    Thanks,

This was driving me insane too. I love my iphone but this is the one flaw. I tried all the "maximizing battery life" suggestions, and it helped slightly.
I have one suggestions: buy an iphone battery case. I bought one off ebay for $29.99 and it is amazing. Nearly doubles the battery and is way nicer than the one at Apple (not to mention 1/4 of the price). The item number is 200795419418 on eBay in case you are interested.
    Hope That Helped!!

  • Battery "died" after an extended amount of time in sleep...

I have a 2007 2.16 Blackbook & have never had an issue with the battery at all.
I had it on sleep for quite a few days & the battery was low. Im guessing it just went flat & shut down. I then plugged it in & now im getting the X icon & it doesnt seem to be charging. I must stress that on istat pro it was showing the battery health at 100%. I also downloaded the app coconut battery & it too said my battery health was 100%.
How can my battery just die from sleep?!!?!?

What can happen is the battery enters a "deep sleep" mode, and this isn't something the battery will "wake up" from. I think that's what you're seeing here; by allowing the computer to sleep with the battery so close to fully discharged. Leaving the battery completely dead for a period of time can effectively kill the battery.
You can try taking the computer to an Apple store and asking the folks there to test your battery & see if it's defective. If they determine it is not defective, you'll have to invest in a replacement.

  • Why did my Apple TV die after only 14 months?

I have an Apple TV MD199LL/A I purchased 11/20/12. It died sometime this month.  I have run all the diagnostics, swapped out cords, hooked up to my Mac to try and restore--nothing works.  I know it is the unit because I moved my other identical device to this room using all the hookups from the other device and it works fine.  When I say dead, I mean no indicator lights, nothing--also iTunes does not even acknowledge the device when hooked up to the computer.  Is the lifespan on this device only 14 months?

Bad luck I'd say - assume you've tried a different power cord in case a fuse has blown?
The original AppleTVs, of which I still have several, got very hot and I think that contributed to many of them failing within a few years.
The new black models have much lower power consumption, only just get warm and in theory should last much longer than devicesusing hard drives.
That said a small percentage of any product will fail in or just out of warranty - most don't, so probably as I say just the luck of the draw.

  • Confusing battery trouble after water spill.  Not quite sure what the problem is but would rather not have to pay for diagnosis.

    Hello there!
So a few weeks ago now I made a schoolboy error and spilt a small amount of water over my 2009 macbook pro while it was closed.  It wouldn't wake up when I opened it so I decided to try and open it up, although it took me forever to find a screwdriver small enough to get the back off.  When I finally managed to take a look, there was a small amount of moisture on the battery.  I left it to dry for a day or so, although probably not as long as I should have done and then when I tried to boot it up again it worked!
    However!
Since its been working again, the battery has permenantly said that it's 'not charging' although often it does seem to charge in spite of this.  I had thought / hoped that this might be fixable simply by replacing the battery, but I dont want to spend a load of money on a battery, should there be more to the problem than this.  Also I have noticed that the battery says 'replace soon', rather than 'replace now' which makes me wonder if the problem could in fact be something do with the logic board instead.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I could do next?  Of course I would like to be able to fix it and have a normal working battery again, but failing that, some insight as to where the problem might lie would be extremely helpful.
Here is all the battery info, which doesnt really mean much to me, but may be of some use.  Many thanks to anyone who helps!

Do you know how easy it would be to just take the battery out......
That depends on your MacBook Pro variant, which we don't yet know (don't know your OSX version either). Different variants and screen sizes have different battery specs. If you need to find out your model before replying, you can enter your serial number in this Apple web page:
    Check Service & Support Coverage
And it will translate to a model. If that doesn't work (I'm having to give options here because I don;t know your OS version):
    1) For Mac OSX 10.7 "Lion" and later, do "About this Mac" and, in the resulting window, press the "More Info..." button to get this:
The red arrow I added indicates your model and screen size.
    2) For Mac OS 10.4 through 10.6, do the same except the "More Info..." button will bring up this screen:
Again my red arrow poiints to pertinent data. Please post that code BUT not any serial numbers. With these OS versions you need to provide the screen size separately, either 13, 15 or 17 inch.
Once you've gone to this trouble it is a very good idea to add it to your equipment line in your forum profile so helpers don't ahve to go through this again for future questions. See my equip line below for an example of enough info to get fast help.

  • Hard Drive Died - After Rebuilding Wiki & Blog Not Working

My Snow Leopard Server hard drive died.
I did a clean install of Snow Leopard on a new drive.
I then created fresh accounts and settings similar to my old server manually.
I then copied over content from a backup.
I copied over the following folders:
    /Library/Web Server/Documents
    /Library/Collaboration
I made sure the settings looked correct (although I noticed that the collaboration GUI has changed from when I originally created the site back on 10.5, so maybe I missed something) and restarted the server.
Static pages of website works fine, mail works fine, etc.
But when I attempt to go to a blog or wiki page I get an animated gif showing the startup spinning gears with a message that says "Server starting up..."
Even the root web page "/groups" page just displays the Server starting up... message
Logs don't seem to be helpful.
I am thinking there is probably a folder or domain reference in one of the wiki plists that uses an index value instead of a folder path or something like that, so the server can't find the wiki content.
    Ideas?

    Figured it out.
Luckily I had the foresight to make a backup copy of the clean install colloboration folders before I copied my collaboration folders from my older server over.
    I noticed one key difference:
My files were owned by root (as that is how I copied them from backup)
And the clean install collaboration folders we all owned by _teamsserver
I changed the owner on my folders to _teamsserver, verified the appropriate r/w settings for the different sub-folders and propagated permissions down.
restarted the server, and all was well.

  • Z10 & Basic battery dying after latest update

I would like to know what Blackberry is doing about this problem. I  have read  it is caused by the android  file in the file manager. I have tried deleting this file, and its contents, but am unable. When is this another update going to be released to fix this problem, I have had to recharge my phone every 8 hours, and I am not happy.

The app is part of the OS and cannot be deleted.

  • Battery drain after installing IOS7 on Iphone 4

    Hi
I have recently installed IOS7 on my IPhone 4.
The battery drains really quickly even when I am not doing anything with the phone. I never had these problem before updating.
    Suggestions please???
    Thanks

I have also noticed what appears to be decreased battery life after the upgrade, though not this bad.  Seems many people are noticing problems.
I noticed and changed a couple of settings that seem to have helped.
    - first, fully shut off the phone and then turn it back on - i read online this helped some, immediately after the update.
    - in mail settings, for the icloud account (I dont use this but it was configured by default) check the sync settings . it defaults to push, which takes more power.  you might want to disable push and set to fetch for this and any other accounts you have, for additional power savings
    - in settings, location services, scroll to the bottom and tap system services : All of them are defaulted to on.  I turned off location-based iads and setting time zone since i dont need those. (I also opted out of the diagnostics and usage as part of the setup, but it was set to on in this screen - i left it on for the time)
    - also in settings -- location settings:  check the list of apps and verify that only the ones you want, are enabled
These few settings seem to have improved things

Help! My iPhone 5 wont turn on after battery died. iPhone is not reponding to charger or anything I have tried... Hard reset is not in option beacuse iPhone is turned off.

Your only chance is letting it charge for about 10min, then connecting it in recovery mode, explained here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808
If it does not charge at all, you'll have to get it serviced by Apple.

I couldn't find the edit button on my original post so I am posting an update here.
I have gone through more apps and have had good luck on all but one more.  And it's not that the app doesn't work, I am talking about the Yahoo Weather app, It works fine, but when you swipe between cities the screen lags a bit and it sometimes doesn't move between pages the way it should.  On iOS 7.1.2 it was smooth as butter but on iOS 8.0, not so much.  I will post a note in the app store to let them know.  I really like the Yahoo app better than the new stock app.
I have been going through my games and they all work fine. Angry Birds (Original and Stella), Canabalt, Minecraft, Bejeweled 2, Silly Walks, PopWords, Doodle Jump, Deep Green all seem to work just fine.
Starbucks app works as it should.
I will stop back again next week after I have had the weekend to play with it in detail and post my thoughts again.

  • W520 battery not charging

My less-than-a-month old w520 is having battery issues.  It started over a week ago.  I first noticed it was at 99% and not charging.  It slowly dropped to mid-90's before I had to send my laptop in to Lenovo for a motherboard replacement (due to the five beep error).  When it returned, the battery was at 83% and still not charging.
    I've tried:
    * Unplugging, letting it drain a couple percent, and plugging it back in.  Still didn't charage.
    * Rebooting.
    * Changing the "Charge Mode" from "Automatically optimize for battery lifespan" to "Always fully charge".  No change.  Tried "Custom charge threshold" of 96%.  No change.
    * I tried running the "Perform Reset" process.  I let it run for almost 12 hours, but it never actually finished - the button said something about clicking it to stop the process and I clicked it, since I figured 12 hours should've done the trick and if it hadn't, it wasn't going to (since the process itself said it would only take several hours).  The net result is that the battery now says 80%.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated!

After 17.5 hours, I stopped the battery reset and called Lenovo.
First, the rep had me take the battery out and put it back in, then set the BIOS to default values.  I did and the verbiage in the system tray changed to "80% available (plugged in, charging)".  (Before, it said "not charging".)  With the problem seemingly fixed, the rep recommended I update the power management software and BIOS to prevent it happening again and we hung up.
A half-hour later, the laptop was still at 80%.  (For what it's worth, "Current" in the Battery tab of the Power Manager reads "0.01 A".)  I updated the power management software to the current one on Lenovo's site.  Still says "charging" but isn't.
I am really reluctant to update the BIOS.  I don't want to brick my machine - I haven't even had it a month!
I'm going to call Lenovo back tomorrow and see what other options are available; I just thought I would update.
