W520 hangs on Windows 7 Pro x64 installation, cannot boot live CD

Hi Everyone!
I decided to reach out to the community for some intelligence that I have not been able to obtain elsewhere.  Here's my story in details in case someone can find a break on any of them ...
I purchased my W520 in November, 2011 with 1 year warranty and used it without issues until last week.  One morning when I started the laptop, it loaded Windows 7 Pro x64, I logged in.  After loading the desktop, I locked the screen/user and stepped out for a minute.  When I came back, the screen was frozen and after a few minutes of waiting I manually powered off the laptop.
Upon restart, Windows 7 would hang on the logo screen and restart in a few minutes.  I was able to restart under Safe Mode, however, which enabled me to create the rescue DVD's.
I decided to re-install the OS, but the installation would hang on the Windows logo screen again.  This was also attempted with all accessories (usb kbd, usb wireless mouse, and display I also tried w/o the battery) disconnected. Then I thought, that it could be a bad hdd - I tried installing XP Pro but got the BSOD with a bad hdd error code.  At that point, I attached the hdd to a working PC and ran checkdisk which found no errors. The problem persisted even with unpartitioned disk and a spare hdd that I had on hand.  What intrigued me was that no linux live CD could load (it would freeze on the loading screen).
After this, I flashed the BIOS to the newest version without any issues during the flash process.  The Windows 7 Pro x64 installation would hang again at the usual logo screen.  I also tried with different DVD source... Memtest did not show any problems either.
Then I called an IT support guy who was not experienced with the issue and took the laptop for bench testing, and after four days of back and forth the IT company was inconclusive that the issues is most likely caused by a bad BIOS.
This happened around March 21, 2013 after Windows 7 installed updates (not sure if this could be related).  The weird part is that the W520 worked fine for a year and four months and when it crashed I was able to use Safe Mode, access and flash BIOS, but was unable to run new installation or live CD's.
Is there anything that I am missing?  Has anyone had the same experience?  What is the conclusion according to you - it is really bad BIOS chip or just a UEFI-related setting?
Thanks for reading and trying to help!

Sir:
I'm not entirely sure what you mean when you write "BIOS v1.40 settings that will make it possible to install Windows 7  Pro 64", but, you can download the 1.40 BIOS (which appears to be the most recent release) from this link: Device Driver File Matrix - W520 , and if you have any concerns about the BIOS settings not being appropriate, just enter the BIOS setup manager (tap the F1 key repeatedly when the laptop is booting) and select 'revert to defaults' or similar.

  • Firefox 3.6.8 hanging in Windows 7 X64

I have used Firefox 3.6.8 with Windows 7 X64 without problems about many months.
Misteriously Firefox stop working. It load in task manager "firefox.exe *32" but dont open the browser window.
I try to reinstall, delete profile and I try the new beta 4 with no sucess.
The only way to make Firefox working again is reinstalling the old 3.6.3 version and after a automatic update to the latest version, start to hang again.
    What is happening?
    Please help.
OS: Windows 7 x64 in a Desktop PC.
    Thanks in advance.

It's possible that you are having a problem with some Firefox add-on that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?
Whenever you have a problem with Firefox, whatever it is, you should make sure it's not caused by one (or more than one) of your installed add-ons, be it an extension, a theme or a plugin. To do that easily and cleanly, run Firefox in [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode safe mode] (don't forget to select ''Disable all add-ons'' when you start safe mode). If the problem disappears, you know it's from an add-on. Disable them all in normal mode, and enable them one at a time until you find the source of the problem. See [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes this article] for information about troubleshooting extensions and themes and [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+plugins this one] for plugins.
If you need support for one of your add-ons, you'll have to contact its author.
If the problem does not disappear when all add-ons are disabled, please tell me, so we can work from there. Please have no fear of following my instructions to the line, as all can be easily undone.

  • AnyConnect client 3.1.04063 Windows 7 x64 users cannot make ssl connection

Over the past week several of my users have suddenly found they cannot connect with a previously working client.  After the login banner is accepted they all get an error message "The certificate on the secure gateway is invalid.  A VPN connection will not be established."  Then another message "AnyConnect was not able to establish a conenction to the specified secure gateway.  Please try connecting again."  On the ASA 5540 logs I see successful authentication and then the device is trying to establish a ssl session which is denied and then connection is terminated.
I have verfied that the ssl certificates are valid and are installed in the trusted root certificates location.  I have checked that ICS is disabled.  I have checked that the vpn adapter display name is correct.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

We are not using a self signed cert.  We have a cert issued by the DoD.  It seems like a user who had previously connected and is on Windows 7 x64 will not be able to connect.  Users who have never connected and browse to the site will be able to successfully connect.
Additional information:  I have cleared all DoD related certs and the server cert from the certmgr.msc on an affected Windows box.  Uninstalled the AnyConnect application and all remnant files.  Cleared SSL cache on both IE and Firefox browsers.  I rebooted then tried connecting via the web address but am receiving the same issue.

  • Windows 7 x64 will not boot with memory upgrade (P6N SLI Platinum)

I recently bought 4x 2GB sticks of Crucial DDR2 memory.  I originally had Windows 7 x86 installed, and with all four sticks in place there was no problem (except the memory limit for x86).  All 8GB of memory registered fine though.
I decided to install the x64 version, but setup would hang at every step and installation took over 12 hours - Windows 7 would not boot either when it was complete.  I removed all but one of the 2GB sticks and everything installed fine and it's up and running now.  If I put the rest of the sticks back in, Windows begins to load but gets stuck at a black screen.  I've swapped each 2GB stick in my system and they all work as long as only one is inserted at a time.
MSI P6N Platinum SLI (v1.7 BIOS)
    Windows 7 x64 Ultimate
    Intel Core 2 Quad @2.4GHz
    4x 2Gb Crucial DDR2 @ 800 MHz
    NVidia GeForce 8800 GTS 640Mb
I've done some google searching, and it seems like other people are having the exact same problem with the P6N boards, but I've never seen any solution...

The memorycontroller on that board is an oldie, got one myself  and it will probably not run @800MHz with all slots occupied on a x64 OS.
That contoller is only rated for 667MHz when running all channells fully occupied.
The fact that you could run it so under x86 has probably to do with the fact it didnt adress all the memory, but only 3.25GB max and thus it was stable enough.
Now you are running an OS that uses all memory and thus it can become unstable while its running at a too high speed for the controller.
I had the same and could "only" get the memory to work @750MHz tops, before it decided to BSOD or bootloop on me.
This is inherent to its design (from NVidia, they made the chipset) and cannot be overcome, but dont worrie yourself, the speeddifference between 667MHz and 800MHz is negligible and will only show up if you run benches, in normal day to day use, you will hardly, if ever, notice it.
But, do you really need 8GB???
If you do gaming, internet, office and other "light" work, i.e. normal homeusage, 4GB is already more then enough.
8GB is nice if you use cad/cam, photoshop and other memory intensive stuff.

  • X79-gd45 (8d) - Windows 7 Pro x64 installation questions

    Hi,
I have a MSI X79-GD45(8D) board with i7-3930k processor that I am trying to install Win 7 x64 Pro on.  I have a Sandisk Xtreme 240 SSD that I will be using as a system disk and 2X WD 1TB Black SATA 6GB/s (faex) drives that I will be using in a RAID 1 configuration for storing quickbooks and other data.  This machine will run a quickbooks enterprise server serving 10 people
I want to get the installation right from the get go so that I can start testing it asap.  Here are the steps that I will be taking to get this going.  Could you folks comment on it so that I can modify it as needed.  Thanks.
I have already installed the main board, 32GB RAM, Processor, fans etc and have setup the case.  It does post without issues so far.  Now for the installation, I have not partitioned the SSD (intend to make use of the full 240 GB) and leave the WD disks in a Raid 1 taking up the whole disk space (no partitions).
I am installing Win 7 x64 Pro on the SSD.  Here I have several questions:
    1. Do I set the SATA mode to RAID or should I just leave it at AHCI? I am assuming that this board recognizes drives in AHCI mode and installs Win 7.  I ask this question because I will be using two WD SATA drives in Raid 1 for storing data later.  Will the SATA mode be AHCI irrespective of that fact or should I change it to RAID after installing Win 7?
    2. Should I install Intel RSTe iaAHCI or iaStorA (ver RSTe_Win7_8_64bit_3.5.0.1101_F6) with the F6 option for the setup I mentioned.  I know the F6 installation in Win XP, but a little confused with Win 7.  I ask this because, I have read some discussions of Intel drivers vs Microsoft's version for AHCI.  Raid is confusing though.  Please explain in detail if you can.  Appreciated.
3 If I do F6 installation, do I install the AHCI/RAID drivers again after Win 7 is installed or does Windows properly load the F6 installation?
SSD, AHCI are all new to me with this build.  I have tried to educate myself, but have some of the confusions that I listed above.  Please explain how I can properly install it to the spec that I outlined above.
Your time, patience and help are all appreciated.  Thanks

1.) IF you are going to be using the mainboads raid controller for the data drive. You need to set the mode to raid for the os install as well. Unless you are going to use the extra chipset for the SSD. (Ports 7 &8) You won't be able to enable raid later w/o re-installing the os.
2.) I put the os(Install) on a usb flash drive, I also include all of the drivers on this flash drive and load the newest versions even if it detects the drive right out of the gate.
3.)Once inside  the OS, you would install the irst drivers there as well. (They are combined the raid bios / drivers and os drivers)
If this isn't going to be a very high I/o server, I probably wouln't bother with the SSD but since you have it you would just use it as a non-member drive of the raid. Have a fast drive for the os, isn't going to help the server all that much as most of the I/O will be on the data drive.
If this is going to be a heavily used server(high i/o) you may want to look at a raid 5 configuration for the os and data drives. As SSD's degrade over time and aren't really optimal for contant use like in a server. Raid 5 requires 3 drives minimum and is striping and mirroring so you get the best of both worlds.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_RAID_levels
However, the board based raid controller isn't really the best for this set up. I am fairly loyal to Adaptec Raid controllers although you need to contact Adaptec (or whoever) in regards to compatiblity as MSI doesn't test server compoents on thier desktop products.

  • Bootcamp windows 7 x64 installation on macbook air 2012 installation screen problem

Below are some pics on what happens after osx restarts to boot into the USB - windows 7 installation.. tried 2 different USB drives and got the same result. any ideas? please help.

Well, I've seen lots of those threads as well and most failed to manage cooperation of Bitlocker and FileVault, have trouble to get a second partition for windows to use with bitlocker or truecrypt etc. But these issues don't apply to me anymore.
Next there are threads instructing how to get a USB stick to work with Bitlocker claiming to have GPT instead of MBR so EFI is gaining any access on them. Those cases seem to work with MacBooks running with Windows, only, thus passing the issues mentioned in paragraph before as well.
And there is my confusion originating from: I can remember some sites claiming to have trouble with EFI on a Mac using Lion, but all those sites are older than Lion's final release date. So I don't know if there is a similar issue today or if I'm actually missing some option ... rEFIt isn't working with Lion according to the refit site itself. Some sites claim EFI is behaving differently on whether there is a super drive or not as Lion isn't supporting USB booting as long as booting from DVD/CD is available ... what's true about those facts? Is my problem related to having a super drive? Are things getting better as soon as I'm replacing my superdrive by a second internal drive? Is it that strange or some sort of plausible behaviour?
According to GPT, Windows 7 is obviously failing to properly detect hybrid MBR/GPT setups on USB sticks while that's what MacOS' disk manager is doing on having GPT-based single partition stick with exFat format. Instead of using the second hybridized partition it's accessing the protected part, only. If I'm converting a disk to GPT in windows everything works fine, but then without hybridized MBR ...
Regarding the fans I'm with you ... as soon as processor load is exceeding 5% the fans get quite noisy ...

  • Windows pro x64 with soundblster live World of Warcr

when i start up my world of warcraft, all of my sound gets greatly distorded. when i go into my sound control panel in windows and change the speeker seting to ither head phones or anything that is not curently selected as the default, the sound gose back to normal. when i am in world of warcraft, and i quit the game, the sound will then go back to normal as well. plz help, it is extreamly annoying to go into the setting over and over again to fix the sound when every i play world of warcraft.

I do know one thing about that game that you didnt list about it's hardware requirements. The game needs to have a certain version of DirectX. Do you have the right version of directX installed (alot of games have it included on the game cd and will ask you to install it at the same time you are installing the game)? Does your sound card support the version of directX that is needed by the game? The latest version of DirectX is 9.0c and I am pretty sure that World of Warcraft is a New game so it is pretty likely that World of Warcraft needs at least ver 8 or 9 of directX. Click Start, then Run, then type "dxdiag" without the qoutes and press enter. If it asks you to scan for the hardware compatibility say Yes or No(if you say yes it will scan your pc and will take a while to finish) on the screen that comes up, in the middle near the bottom it will say what version of direct X you have.

  • Windows partition randomly gone, cannot boot into it.

    Some Background:
I installed Windows 7 on my iMac (iMac12,1) under OS X 10.7.2, then I re-installed a 64 bit version of Win7 later. I've been using mostly Win7 for stuff, switching back to OS X (upgraded to 10.8.2) every now and then.
Today, I was just working away in Windows, minding my own business, when the computer decides to restart, without me telling it to do so.
It boots up in to OS X. No problem. I'll just reboot into Windows.
I open up System Preferences, click Startup Disk, and the Windows partition isn't there. Open up Finder to look for it. Not there either. Open up Disk Utility to look for it. All I see is the OS X partition and a partition called disk0s2, which is grayed out. Upon clicking, I see that it is not mounted, and the capacity is 209.7 MB. That's all I get.
Oddly enough, I see files that were on Windows in the Finder window, but not under any Windows partition.
I have no clue why this happened, how it happened, or how to fix it.
I have done almost two weeks worth of work on Windows, and it appears to be gone.
Anything that can be done to help me is appreciated!

  • Macbook Pro 17 cannot boot into Mac OS anymore after making partition on windows

My Mac is a Macbook Pro 17", I got it from my friend (no original disc).
So after upgrading it to Mavericks (I was unable to install Windows using Boot camp of 10.6.8), Boot Camp successfully let me install Windows 7 Professional (x64).
The problem is that, I shrink the Boot Camp partition, and create another NTFS partition (so I can store data in the second partition as I usually do when using Windows). Now, I cannot boot into Mac OS anymore. Holding Command + Option + R does nothing, holding Option while startup shows a hard drive named Windows (instead of Mac HD). And no Recovery HD too

    shakhriyor,
you’re going to need to purchase a replacement pair of the original grey installation DVDs for your MacBook Pro from Apple to be able to fix this problem.

  • Bootcamp, ATI 4850 driver not installs on windows 7 x64.

Hi all, I need some help with ATI driver installation.
I followed Windows x64 installation instructions available
    on Apple page.
Here is how I installed Windows 7 x64:
    1. Partitioning - went fine.
    2. Windows 7 x64 Installation - black screen issue encountered.
    3. I prepared usb drive as described on apple page - didn't work
Black screen again - I rebooted several times with no success.
    4. I removed atikmdag.sys- according to description found on the internet.
    5. Then I was able to complete installation.
    6. Installed Bootcamp 3.0 from MaxOS CD
    7. I was asked for reboot - I confirmed.
    8. Black screen again!
    9. I repeated point 4 (atikmdag.sys removal) and then
was able to login to Win7
    10. I installed Bootcamp 3.1 for windows 64 update.
    11. I was asked for reboot - I confirmed.
    12. Black screen AGAIN!
    13. I repeated point 4 AGAIN (atikmdag.sys removal) and then
was able to login to Win7
    14. I tried to repeat unistall/install of Bootcamp 3.0/3.1
several times with the same result:
    A). Install Bootcamp
    B). Bootcamp asks for reboot
    C). Black screen issue
    D). manual atikmdag.sys removal
    E). go to A.
I also tried ATI Catalyst drivers installation but there is still Black screen issue and driver is not really installed.
Also I executed Windows Update and tried to install ATI driver
from there, but its installation fails!
I have iMac i7 8GB RAM - just got it two days ago and can't it really use with Win7
    I'll appreciate any help.

Plug in another monitor this will fix the problem. windows/apple (one of the two) turns the mini port in the back into the main output. once you plug in a new monitor the install will continue and the drivers are updated of the apple disc will will be able to unplug the monitor and everything should be ok.

  • Reader 11.0.2 extremely slow on Win 8 Pro x64

I have a Core i7 quad-core with 8Gb of ram and a hybrid ssd/hdd 750Gb drive. My computer is quite speedy with everthing _except_ adobe reader. 50% of the time when I try to open a .pdf of various sizes (from 300Kb to 300Mb) the file just never opens at all, and I have to open task manager and kill the adobe process and try it all over. When it does open, a 500Kb file will take about 90 seconds to open, if you want to scroll down? that's another 90 seconds. Want to close Adobe Reader, you guessed it, another 90 seconds go by, if it doesn't completely freeze.
I've reinstalled twice. I even used Revo Uninstalller to really remove Adobe Reader and then re-install. Same slower than molasses in January going uphill on a cold day result.
I do not have 3rd party Anti-Virus as Windows 8 has it's Defender renamed Security Essentials re-renamed Defender.

    Please Advise.

I came looking for an answer to the same problem.
Ever since the recent upgrade to Acrobat Reader 11.0.2 the program has been unsually slow off and on.
Mine isn't as bad as PhlMike17's, but I too am running a quad core with 8gigs windows pro x64 up to date, I use mostly for Illustrator and Photoshop/web design.
This morning I checked back to a 275kb 1page pdf image copy of an estimate from a partner company, and it loaded then hung for 5-10 seconds as has been the norm since upgrading.
Sometimes it doesn't hang at all, file size doesn't seem to be an issue.
    I always do the upgrades.
I am running the Japanese version.
    cheers.

  • Interrupted Installation - Acrobat XI Pro - Windows 8 (x64)

    Hi -
I am attempting to install a trial version of Acrobat XI Pro on a Windows 8 (x64). I use the Adobe Download Assistant to download the files and initiate installation (choosing to save the files to my desktop). I choose "use trial or subscription" and the installation wizard begins; however, each and every time the wizard ends up "rolling back" and ending with a message that the installation was interrupted. It does not indicate what the interruption was, so I cannot figure out how to solve the issue.
    Other possibly important info:
    - running Bitdefender Internet Security
    - have already run the acrobat cleaner tool to ensure any partial installs have been removed
**new development: I can no longer get past the Use Trial or Subscription / I have a serial number screen.

Yeah, you botched your activation. Nothing you can do at this point. It will only ever work if you buy it (ignoring your technical issues for the time being).

  • B1DIEvent Service on Windows Server 2008 x64 - installation hanging

I'm trying to install the B1DIEvent Service on a Windows 2008 x64 Server but the installation is not completing. It does create the directories in the SAP folder but the installer hangs at roughly 95%.
It seems to not be able to register the service on the server.
Does anyone know if there would be compatability issues with Wondows 2008 Server x64? Or are there any speciffic steps that I can take to install this?
I have installed MSMQ on the server.
    Any help would be appreaciated.
    Best wishes
    Edu van Zyl

    Hi Edu,
Did you followed the instructions compiled in the other threads showing how to recompile the dll???
Just follow step by step what is described there, it should work.
DI EVENT SERVICE ON 64 SERVER
    1. Change compilation option to x64
    2. You have to replace the following 2 lines modified marked with:
    char msg[ 398 ]; // Old was mgs[378]
    sock, msg, 398, 0, (const struct sockaddr*)&sAddr, sizeof(struct
    sockaddr_in));
    3. Replace the old dll by the new one compiled
    4. Don't forget to register the dll (after compiling and copying in the right folder):
    C:\WINDOWS\SysWOW64>regsvr32.exe "C:\Program Files (x86)\SAP\SAP Business
One DI Event Service\SAP Business One DI Event Server\SBO_SP_TransactionNotification\B1DIEventsSender.dll"
Both Ad and Andres succeeded to do it.
    Hope it helps
    Trinidad.
