W520 Int'l Power Question

Hello beautiful folks of the lenovo community.
I am traveling oversees next week to Doha, Qatar where the power outlets are 220V with either the Indian or UK plug head.
Will the 520's power brick switch over the voltage, or should I bring my step down converter for good measure?
Cheers,
Dylan

For travelling I bought a 135W power brick because of its somewhat smaller size. Same weight though. Works great.

  • W520 nvidia quadro power consumption

Dear community, I have a short question about power consumption. I did a clean install of windows 7 64bit on my W520 with a quadro 2000. Power consumption when idle with max brightness is somewhere at 18 watt, definitely highter than what I had with the Lenovo default installation. Checking Lenovo's energy software indicates that the GPU is running at full speed all the time so I thought this could be a source of additional power consumption. I installed the latest Lenovo graphics driver from the homepage, but I'm not sure if thats enough. Maybe there is a problem with Nvidias Optimus technology or the switchable graphics? I'd be glad about any feedback and, yes, I know that I'm a little bit on my own with a clean install. :-) Thanks, Branagh

I get these numbers from the basic view. The battery tab does not indicate power consumption when I have the power chord connected. If I'm on battery the wattage numbers match.
But the result remains the same no matter if I'm on battery or plugged, or what power settings I use (setting the display to max brightness and the machine idling): If I force the laptop to be on the Nvidia graphics, power consumption is at arond 18W, if I allow it to use the intel graphics, it goes up to at least 20W. GPU load in the power manager is always given at 100%.
GPU-Z gives more adequate numbers I guess. When I force the Nvidia GPU, the load is correctly displayed at 0% when idle and the core clock goes down to 50Mhz. When I use the intel graphics the load remains at 1% and the core/ram clocks remain at 650 / 533 Mhz all the time.

  • AC Power Questions: G505s

Okay heres how the cookie crumbles:
Its a regular old day on my laptop until I figure out that my laptop isnt charging despite the charger being plugged in. So I think rationall and try to figure out the problem before the computer goes kaput. I order a new charger off of Amazon etc. Etc. Then my battery reaches zero and something strange happens: the batterystatus when hovered over says 'plugged in not chargeing', thus I propmtly try to Google the issue but my laptop finally goes black and dies.
Now I try and turn on my laptop with AC power (took out the battery, and pressed start) but it wont turn on. Why?
And what should be my next steps?
    Solved!

    hi DontStare,
When you said "the battery says its dead", do you mean the charge is stucked at 0% and says plugged-in not charging?

    Regarding your questions:
    1. There's no special method to boot the G505 using AC power. Just plugged-in the AC adapter and the unit should turn ON with or without the battery.
    2. The plugged-in not charging issue is usually triggered when the Lenovo Energy Management / Lenovo Energy Manager is set to Optimized Batteyr Health (Win8) or Conservation Mode (Win8.1)

To check, try to charge the battery while the AC adapter is plugged-in and computer is off

If the battery still doesn't charge, I recommend you contact Lenovo and report the issue (they'll most likely give you a new battery).

  • Outdoor Wireless Mesh 1524 AP Power Question

    Hello Group,
I curious, if I have a 1524PS AP that I would like to power from a power pole and the power pole does not have a street light or street light power control on it today but it does have 480V/277V power source, can I still use the power source directly by wiring the 40ft power cable in directly. I would think not, but I am getting a lot of questions about this lately so I am looking here for some help.
From the cisco documentation it says we can use 480V power sources. However, its a bit ambiguous in some places stated that it can be done if you use a street light power tap - is this just a power cord or does it include some sort of transformer as well?
My understanding is that most 480V systems in scenerios like this are 2-phase. However according to the cisco documentation for the 1524 AP you can power the AP via 90-480V power source. I am little nervous to try that here. I know 277V can be dangerous. Will the Cisco AP support cutting the existing power cord (40ft) and wiring it directly into a 277V/480v power source off the light pole? I have been getting conflicting reports from the documentation and others. Any help here would be greatly appreciated.
Is the AP power supply capable (via a transformer of some sort) of converting direct 277/480V power to something usable via the AP? The 40 ft power cable supplied with the AP looks like its made for 110/240 only so cutting and rewiring it hot into the 277V source could be dangerous correct?
If someone could give me a definately answer here it would be greatly appreciated. We can't proceed until we figure this out.
    Thanks in advance

    Hello Bradley,
We'll, if you have WCS then a mismatch would happen with the cnofig template on WCS (if you have one).
There could possibly be an AP template on the WCS to set the radio for the APs automatically.
This is from Configure -> AP Configuration Templates -> Lightwieght AP.
From this location you can configure a template with the AP settings and push it to the APs you want. You can also schedule the time at which the template will be applied. A recurrence also can be configured.
    So make sure that:
    - No mismatch between WCS and WLCS (you can go to Configure -> Controllers and try to audit differences between WLC and WCS).
    - Save your configuraiton on WLC if you apply it from WLC.
    - Make sure that there are no AP templates on WCS with recurrence configured.
To avoide any mismatch in the future, I suggest you do all your configuration from WCS. This way you'll save time (if you have more than one WLC) and you'll also make sure configuration is consistent among all controllers.

  • USB3 Bandwidth/Power Questions

So I'm pretty sure I'm gonna be going with a MSI laptop but I have some questions about the USB3 ports.
Can anyone confirm what chipsets the MSI laptops use, specifically for this model: MSI GE60 2PC-610UK
The reason I ask is because my external USB3 capture card will be a Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle and let's just say it's very picky on what USB3 chipset it uses. It's apparently fine if the port operates at 5 Gbps (SuperSpeed) and gives decent power over USB3.
Will the Webcam/Bluetooth/Wireless impact this speed as apparently they use the USB bus. I should disable Bluetooth etc to make sure USB3 is getting the max it can, right?

Its controller chip should be INTEL HM86 or HM87.
Webcam/Bluetooth goes USB 2.0 channel, WIRELESS goes PCIE channel, so they won't effect USB 3.0 speed.

  • WRT54G Portable AC power question....

Howdy,  I have recently aquired a WRT54G and have found multiple answers for this question but nothing "for sure"...  So, the input power on the unit is 12V 1A, but the DC wall adapter that came with it is 12V 0.5mA and everything works fine...  I've always been told not to over or under power any electronics, anyway the question is I have a AC adapter for a cigarette lighter that was a capable output of 12V and 800mA.  Will this work??  Or is there a chance I may mess up my unit?
Message Edited by Meta_Fizics on 08-23-2008 02:44 PM

Generally, you should use the power adapter that came with your router.
I doubt that your router is really designed to use 12v  1 amp, yet it works properly on a 12 v  0.5 amp power supply.    More likely, either the specs that you have on the router are in error, or the power supply is stamped with the wrong info.
What version of the WRT54G do you have?  Also, from the router, please post the first 4 letters or digits in the serial number prefix.  (Note:  most WRT54G routers have a serial number prefix that starts with  C  or  M ).

  • Power question

    Hi.
I posted here a few weeks ago regarding my new rig.  Had some problems from start, in that the system would die/shutdown unexpectedly at random times.  By getting a horribly false CPU temp reading through MBM 5, I wondered if the heatsink/fan was not connected properly, and when taking it off to check, managed to rip out my CPU and break one of the pins!  Sent it back to AMD with a nice letter hoping they would replace it for me, and although what I did voided the warrenty, they decided to give me new one as a gesture of goodwill, for which I am very grateful for.
So having replaced it, I am still having the same shutdown problems.  I have noticed that these can happen at any time, after 20 minutes system use, or after 2 hours.  It has only happened (I think) during gaming or while running 3DMark03.  Once the system has shutdown, it will not start for about one minute - pressing the power on button does absolutely nothing, no lights/fans/anything.  So I am guessing it is a power problem, rather than a memory or mobo thing?  I notice that I have more problems when I am overclocking via the D.O.T enabled in the BIOS.
My current PSU is the ever-popular Q-Tec Gold 400w, which I now notice indicates 12a/16a Max/Peak on the +12v - is this the problem?  I have no idea what in my machine runs on what rail (the S-ATA HD and floppy seem to take a different power connector than the combo drive, video card, fans, cathode light) and I buying an Enermax 465 PSU soon.
So the question is, in addition the the PSU, what should I be looking at to solve this problem?  RAM stability?  It is supposed to run at 2-3-2-6 and, although running at Auto speeds in the BIOS, using CPU-Z these are the values I am getting.

Installed the new Enermax 465 PSU yesterday and...hey presto, seems like my problems are gone!  Played a lot of games, ran 3DMark03 a couple of times, and no shut-down.  Now I finally have my new computer!  Damn that Q-Tec piece of junk!
I had previously worked out that the problem was not heat related, as even if I left the machine for a few hours after shutdown, it would not restart without messing around with the power cord and wall socket.  Just had to unplug and replug these four or five times each and the machine would work again.  So it had to be a power issue.  Now just have to off-load that 400w Q-Tec

  • Int to enum question

I have an old program, the method take an int as parameter, in side the method, I check each int value and take action like:
    switch(i)
    case Const.A: ...
    case Const.B: ...
Const is a class defined sone constant values like
    static final int A = 1;
    static final int B = 2;
now, I would like to change Const to a enum. define A, B as enum's elements. but i don't want to change method's parameter, which means the method still take int as parameter. how can I map the passed in int to each enum element

now, I would like to change Const to a enum. define
    A, B as enum's elements. but i don't want to change
method's parameter, which means the method still take
int as parameter. how can I map the passed in int to
each enum elementWhy are you not able (or desiring) to change the method to accept an enum parameter?
One way to get the enum's ordinality is to use the ordinal method. This is kind of the converse to what jverd was showing you.
myMethod(myEnum.ordinal()); //changes enum to its integerBut as jverd states, best to use enums as enums and integers as integers.

  • X-Fi Platinum Front panel Power QUESTION

? Hi All, I have X-Fi Platinum. Does the front panel require A power connection. If so what kind of connector do I need? Run from the card to the front panel? Cant find manual on line!? THANKS IN ADVANCE

This requires a four pin floppy power connector. If your case does not have one you can find a molex to floppy adapter very simply on online retailers.

  • WiFi and Battery Power question

I've noticed that while in my house, if I leave my iPhone connected to my wifi network, when I unlock the phone, the "edge" logo is up for a few seconds until it reconnects to my wifi.
When the phone is locked, if the wifi is still enabled, does it drain the same amount of power as if it was locked with wifi disabled?

    Hey Tim,
The iPhone battery web page describes this and other tips to help get the most from your iPhones battery charge.
"Wi-Fi: Wi-Fi consumes power even if you are not using its features to connect to a network. You can turn it off to save power. Go to Settings > General > Network > Wi-Fi."

  • Macbook Power Questions

Hi, is there a way that you can have your macbook not turn off when you close it? Like, I'm watching a movie or downloading something, and I have to move it, but have to close it, something like that. When you close it, it shuts down for me, but is there a option?
    Thanks

I know exactly what you mean, unfortunately I don't see anything in power management or display to enable that feature (I just tested that feature with XP Pro loaded on my Macbook via Bootcamp and it works fine).
There might be 3rd party options, I'll dig a little bit more to see if someone has come up with a tweak for it.

  • Carrier and power questions

Do you recommend Verizon over AT&T?  With 10 hrs battery time, I don't need power to run an iPad, right?

Do you recommend Verizon over AT&T?
Choosing a carrier depends on coverage.  If you don't have AT&T coverage where you plan to use the iPad, then you'd want to get the Verizon one.  And vice versa.  The exception is if you plan to use the iPad outside the USA.  If the country you go to uses GSM, you may be able to use a local SIM and get cheaper rates.  But for many people, this is too much of a hastle for a one week vacation, so it may or may not matter to you.
With 10 hrs battery time, I don't need power to run an iPad, right?
Eventually you need to charge the battery.
10 hours will depend on what you do.  If you are only reading an iBook and not sufing the net (so using power for the cellular or Wi-Fi radios,) you will get more battery run time than if you were watching Netflix movies back to back.  (You'd probably get 4-5 hours that way.)  My personal usage, which is a lot of surfing the net, watching podcasts stored on the iPad, I'll get to 60% after 3 days or so, after which I "need power" to recharge the battery.    But that's my usage so YMMV.

  • IPOD CLASSIC POWER QUESTIONS

Ok so I have a bunch of these old iPod classics from 2003 that won't power on. I suspect its the batterys. Anyway I replaced the batteries in one of them and got it to turn on. But they don't charge from the USB to the computer, so i'm told...So I bought a cheap aftermarket wall charger off ebay and that still did not work...I'm wondering if there is a specific type of charger, voltage etc I should be looking for?

Ok so I have a bunch of these old iPod classics from 2003 that won't power on.
They are not iPod classics. The iPod classic wasn't released until 2007. I think they're iPod with dock connector (commonly known as the iPod 3rd generation) which will not charge via a usb connection.
If my memory serves me correctly, this applies not only to computers but to wall chargers as well.
You will need a wall charger that connects via firewire.
You can check what model iPod you have from this link.

  • Int dereferencing error question

Hey what does the error "int cannt be dereferenced" mean. I get it when im calling a method with a variable read in from a file?

Java has two families of types: primitive types and reference types.
Primitves: byte, char, short, int, long, float, double, boolean.
References: Refer to objects, interfaces and arrays. People often simply think of them as "objects," which is a good enough approximation in many cicrcumstances.
To dereference is when you use the dot to get to a member (variable or method) that a reference refers to.
    Object obj = new Object();
System.out.println(obj.hashCode());In the second line, we dereference obj to access its hashCode method.
    Primitives (like int) don't have members, so you can't dereference them.int i = 5;
System.out.println(i.hashCode()); // can't do it. i doesn't refer to an object, so there are no methods associated with it

  • RD480 Noe2 FI power question

I've been wondering about the 8pin cpu power that is on this board. I just got a new PSU and it has an 8pin plug, but I don't know if I should plug it in or not. It works fine with just the 4pin in, but I don't know if it will work better with the 8pin in or if it would fry something.
Would someone here be willing to clarify this for me?
    Specs:
    RD480 Neo2-FI
    939 64 X2 3800+
    2Gb Kingston DR400
    700watt PSU (Coolmax CUG-700b)

Under normal conditions it's not possible to overload a motherboard from the PSU.
The other way around is possible, to overload a PSU from the motherboard, but then you simply have a too light PSU.
To put it into very simplistic terms.
