W520 no PXE-Boot when using UEFI only
Hello!
When I switch my W520 to UEFI-only there is no LAN-Boot-Option any more. I disabled all other devices and only left PCI-LAN in Boot-Order but then my laptop shows me a empty Boot-Manager. I already searched google and all UEFI-Options but did not find any solution.
The UEFI-Version is 1.38 (the one from June 2012)...
Am I the only one who has this problem?! Did not find anything on google with the typical keywords...
Thanks!

Yes. Booting to GPT disk has nothing to do with PXE.

When using headphones, only the left side works, HELP?
When using headphones, only the left side works when plugged into the macbook. I've tried 3 different working pairs of headphones and different media types and nothing seems to fix it. HELP?
Hi atgoetz,
Usually this is indicative of a bad headphone jack on the machine end, especially if you've tried three different pairs of known good headphones. Unfortunately there's not much you do to resolve the issue, externally. Considering it's a new machine no sense trying to fix something and making it work. I'd reach out to AppleCare for service on the unit and if it's brand new, possibly arrange a replacement unit. -
Satellite C50-B with Win 8.1 - PXE error appeares using UEFI boot mode
I have a C50-b laptop running Win 8.1 and recently needed to boot it from a usb key so eventually found the way to do that (miss the bios first boot menu) and managed to do that.
My problem is even when I have returned to uefi and set the boot order to be local disk, cd, network it asks everytime do I want to boot for PXE IP4,IP6 then IP4 and IP6 again. I have also disabled secure boot
I think some value is missing when I switched to BIOS and back to UETI boot option but where is the laptop getting the setting to tell it to PXE/Network boot when its down the list and wake on LAN is disabled.According to the automated support on the site I should do the following for Win 8
Switch on the notebook and immediately begin tapping the F2 key continuously.
When the system setup (BIOS) appears, stop tapping F2. Tap F9 once, select 'Yes', and press Enter.
Use the cursor keys to move to the Advanced menu.
Choose System Configuration and press Enter.
Ensure that Boot Mode is set to UEFI Boot.
Press Escape to return to the Advanced menu and choose the Security menu.
Set Secure Boot to Enabled.
Press F10 once, select 'Yes', and press Enter. -
Is pxe needed when using boot media?
When using PXE, do you still need to enable PXE on your DP. I understand how PXE works when booting from network, but if you are booting to a bootable CD, and it reaches out to the DP, what ports are used and is PXE somehow still involved? I
ask because the only way to enable support for Unknown computers is within the enablement of PXE on the DP.
Thank you

[SOLVED] Wiki page for GPT disks and booting arch using UEFI
Hi guys, I am new to archlinux. I installed archlinux x86_64 just yesterday and I like its customisability. I also like arch wiki. Nowhere else have I seen such extensive documentation, especially about things like HAL, UDEV etc. with proper instructions. Thanks to all archers.
I have installed Archlinux x86_64 in my Dell India Studio 1537 laptop along with Windows 7 Professional x64. Both the OSes boot in UEFI-GPT setup (my UEFI is tianocore.sourceforge.net EDK DUET UEFI64 firmware booting from USB). I boot Archlinux using my own compiled grub2-bzr compiled for both BIOS and UEFI-x64. I have a 1 MB BIOS Boot Partition as required by grub2 for BIOS-GPT booting. My Archlinux system can boot both from bios and from uefi, while Windows can boot only using UEFI.
The official Archlinux installation guide talks about only MBR (or msdos disklabel) partitions and booting from BIOS based systems. With 2TB drives becoming common place and UEFI being implemented (search for Phoenix SecureCore Tiano's 1 second POST operation), I think a proper wiki page describing differences between MBR and GPT, why GPT is better, how to setup arch to boot from GPT. Another page describing steps to setup arch to boot from UEFI (either as a separate page or as an extension of GRUB2 wiki page) is also needed.
Some details regarding Pure GPT (not a Hybrid GPT/MBR setup) and/or UEFI setups :-
Partitioning tools -
GNU Parted for filesystem related tasks
GPT fdisk tool - http://rodsbooks.com/gdisk/ , http://sourceforge.net/projects/gptfdisk/ , pacman -S gdisk (in extra repo) - for non-filesystem related tasks
util-linux-ng fdisk does not support GPT disks
Bootloader - GRUB2 - vanilla grub-legacy does not support GPT and does not support UEFI (Fedora's patched grub-legacy does support both GPT and UEFI) and syslinux does not support GPT (I may be wrong here - seems a gptmbr of syslinux does help in booting from gpt but not sure).
For GRUB2 - Need BIOS Boot Partition to embed GRUB2's core.img in GPT disks - size about 1 MB max - no filesystem
In GPT fdisk partition type code - EF02
In GNU Parted or GParted - bios_grub flag on
For UEFI-GPT booting this special partition is not needed as no embedding takes place. This is needed only in case of BIOS-GPT booting.
Incase of custom kernel configuration - enable CONFIG_EFI_PARTITION for GPT support
CONFIG_EFI for UEFI support (for UEFI even above option required)
CONFIG_EFI_VARS for UEFI Runtime Variables support (optional)
Note: Although GPT is part of UEFI specification, a UEFI system is not needed to boot from/use GPT. BIOS based GPT booting is possible with GRUB2 or Fedora's patched grub-legacy (but not vanilla grub-legacy provided by archlinux). It is also possible to boot Linux in UEFI-MBR setup (again using grub2) but I have not tried it.
Even without UEFI and less than 2TB harddrives, GPT based partitioning has many advantages - secondary GPT header and Partition table, CRC32 checksums. Unique Disk GUID and Filesystem-independent Unique Partition GUIDs, multiple primary partitions (default is 128 partitions, but it can be changed). The only problamatic OS is Windows which does not allow GPT booing unless one has UEFI based system. It allows only UEFI-GPT or BIOS-MBR setups. In linux it just depends on how the bootloader is configured - not a problem with grub2.
I also propose that incase of Auto-prepare Hard Drive, the installer default to GPT for "archlinux only" installs ( ie no dual-boot or triple-boot etc.).
I did not use the official archlinux iso but used archboot 2010.04 R3 as it gave an option of installing to GPT and also provided GRUB2 during bootloader install. I have never edited any wiki page before, thats why I request some one else to start a wiki page with the information given above.
I don't know whether this is the right place, but any Windows (Vista or 7 x64 versions) and Linux dual-boot user who has UEFI-based system with GPT partitioning and wants to get rid of Hybrid MBR setup (to boot Windows) can follow this post http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/lofive … hp/t186440 (outside this forum) - this link describes the way to make Windows boot natively in UEFI-GPT setup. After doing this one can install arch using GRUB2 compiled for UEFI x86_64, and Windows will also see

You could start the wiki page in your user-space with what you have, and then invite others to join working on it. Just register a wiki account, navigate to the page you want to start, for example:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/User:skodabenz/GPT
and click on "edit this page".
As noted in the other thread, arch's legacy grub is patched for gpt support. I don't know about UEFI, but you can always open a bug report asking for the patches from fedora to be included.
edit: the page from Rod Smith is a great resource. I was absolutely terrified at first by all this screwed up GPT/MBR stuff when I tried triple-booting Arch, Win and OS x, but he really does a great job explaining what it is all about.

W520 hangs on boot when a WD SES USB drive is connected
Hi,
Computer: W520
Hard drive: Western Digital - My Passport (SES Drive - encrypted)
When I boot with the usb hard drive connected to any usb port on the computer, the computer hangs forever at boot time. If I unplug the drive and reboot, everything is fine. I was able to fix the problem by disabling the USB support in the bios but then, none of the USB ports work in Windows.
I believe this is due to the SES function of the WD usb hard drive (see: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3701/~/computer-freezes-when-it-restarts-with-a-wd-m...
Also, a previous post with a similar problem was written on this board but provided no working solution (see: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/W-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/W520-won-t-boot-with-SES-device-connected-to-U...
Thanks in advance for your help.Hello jeantremblay44,
As I understand the laptop cannot boot if the external USB drive is connected.
Kindly try the following troubleshooting step
You can make the USB boot disable from BIOS and make the first boot device as Hard Disk

W520 will not boot when docked; blue screen
W520 fails to boot 100% of the time when docked. Blue screen shows SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION, STOP x0000003B for nvlddmkm.sys
nvlddmkm.sys is the NVIDIA driver, which is version 8.17.12.9620, the latest shown on the NVIDIA and Lenovo websites. BIOS is also the latest.
Systems boots fine if I remove it from the dock, but it will not boot when docked.

Any suggestions?Boot with Option held down. After the cursor changes to an arrow, Command-. (Command Period) should open and close the optical drive. After you insert the disc, click the curved arrow to have it re-scan the discs for boot volumes. Then select the optical drive and click the straight right-pointing arrow to start.

MAcbook Pro 10.5.1 intermittently switching off when using battery only
Very recently, my macbook pro has started switching itself off. It only happen when using the battery and the charge meter (on the battery) still shows at least 50% charge. It would appear that I can not reboot wither until the mains are attached again. I no longer receive the warning message regarding reserve power, and have previously run the lappy down to 5-6% charge before a recharge.
I have had 10.5.1 installed since its release, and this issue has only just started in the last week, despite daily usage.
Has anyone else had this or similar issues? It seems unlikely thatt it is hardware and I've cchecked the connections and they appear ok. Please help, its very annoying.
Thanks in advance,
GrahamThis sounds exactly like what was happening to me last fall - around Labor Day. This is a battery problem not an OS problem. I called Apple Care and they sent a new battery (after we tried all the PRAM stuff, etc.). The new battery took care of the problem.
I hope this helps. Good luck.

Why is photo black and color draining when using black only?
I am printing in fast draft, black only, why is my photo black being used?
Am I wrong thinking photo black is just for the photo tray?
Also my colors seem to be used as well.Hi,
Color inks will drain slowly even we use black only because from time to time the printer needs to clean the print head(s) specially during warming up process.

Fingerprint Reader not being recognized at boot when using Dell Monitor
Hi,
I just purchased a Dell U3011 and it has USB ports, so connecting the adapter to the PC allows you to use to the ports on the monitor.
What's interesting, is that at bootup--and only at bootup--my W700 doesn't recognize the Fingerprint Reader and instead prompts for the HDD passwords manually.
But when Windows 7 starts, it does reconize the Fingerprint Reader and I'm able to logon using my fingerprint.
The problem is only right after POST.
So is there some sort of conflict and is there possibly some setting I can configure in the BIOS that might resolve this "conflict?"
Thanks.Do you mean the internal fingerprint reader?

When using RTMP, only the sample files will stream?
I am using the exact same code and placing the f4v file in the same directory that the sample files are in, but if I change the name on the file it will not stream, connection error! Only plays the sample files?
Hi,
Firstly I wanted to clarify if you're gertting a connection error, i.e you're not able to make a connection to the application itself, or if you're getting an error when you try to play your stream (like Stream Not Found)?
Since you've mentioned that you're able to play sample files, I'm assuming that you're able to make connections to the application successfully.
Coming to the problem with playback of custom media, are you using the sample vod application to playback your files or are you copying the code into a different application and then using that?
If you have copied the files from vod into a custom application then the application specific virtual directory mapping for recorded streams still points to that under the vod application. So you're able to play the sample files as they are present under root_install/applications/vod/media (the default media location for vod app) but not your f4v files placed in custom_application/media directory, as it is not looking in that folder.
To point the virtual directory to a custom location, in the Application.xml of your application either change/add the following tag with the folder path :
<Application>
<StreamManager>
<VirtualDirectory>
<!-- Specifies application specific virtual directory mapping for recorded streams. -->
<Streams>/;${VOD_COMMON_DIR}</Streams> //default. Can be removed
<Streams>/;${VOD_DIR}</Streams> //default. Can be removed
<Streams>/;path_to_your_media_folder</Streams> //add this
</VirtualDirectory>
</StreamManager>
After this Resart FMS and retry. You should now be able to play your media.
The same holds for the live application. The folder where the published streams are mapped points to the live application folder. If you have a custom application you can edit this path the same way.
Hope this helps.
Thanks,

Mac Mini KVM USB problem prevents boot when using certain USB ports
Hi,
Just purchased a brand new Mac Mini 2.4 Quad Core to use as a server.
This morning we removed from the box & connected it to our NTI Unimux 16-port KVM. The KVM already has 10 Mac Mini's connected (various vintages, no problems).
We connected the Mini to the KVM using HDMI for video and a USB connector.
The Mini initially refused to boot past the initial white/gray screen. It never got to the Apple or the cog.
However, we found that if the USB cable from the KVM is disconnected, the Mac Mini booted immediately.
Further, the Mini will also boot with an Apple keyboard connected.
So... you may assume that the KVM cable is bad or that there is some firmware compatability issue between the KVM and this new Mac Mini.
EXCEPT...
This Mini has 4 USB ports.
We found that the Mac Mini can boot with the KVM USB cable connected if the USB cable is connected to USB ports 2 or 4 on the Mac Mini.
If the KVM USB is connected to ports 1 or 3 on the Mini, the Mini will not boot.
The Mac Mini will boot with an Apple USB keyboard installed on any port.
Is there any logical reason for this behavior?
Thanks,

Yahoo sent mail not saved to server when using Mail only.
Why does my Yahoo sent mail not get saved to the server when I use Apple's Mail program? (I have it saved in settings to keep sent mail on server). I can see it in my Sent mail folder on Apple Mail but not on the yahoo server. It's an IMAP account and it works fine on my iPhone.
I have tried changing the outgoing ports as well and erasing the account and reinstating it on the Mail program. No luck.NatMac:

[SOLVED] netcfg: unable to add gateway on boot when using ipv6
