W520 not throttling CPU on battery with WLAN active
I've been running some new benchmark tests using PCMARK7 this weekend. Normally my battery performance numbers are around 50% of the AC numbers when the system is connected to the wired LAN. The benchmark program utilizes the NVIDIA eGPU so throttling on the battery is expected. However, I reran the benchmark with the WLAN active and my scores on the battery were on AC, 4488; On Battery, 4370!!! This was repeatable and not a fluke reading. I'm running BIOS 1.37, but I don't recall any changes in the CPU throttling area. Anyone else see this?

I posted this procedure over a month ago in response to the "stuck CPU" on battery issue. 1.5GHz on battery is not normal. You should be able to achieve maximum clock frequency when MAXTURBO (not really TurboBoost) is set in the system settings for the battery section of the power profile. I regularly monitor 2.3 GHz on my system when the application(s) require it to do so (SpeedStep) when on battery. TurboBoost shows 3.4 GHz when on AC.
CMOS reset procedure:
There used to be a procedure with older ThinkPad systems to reset the CMOS which was to both remove the battery AND to then depress the power on button 10 times (5 sec intervals between). I did both on my W520 (battery was out for 5 min), replaced the battery and plugged the system back into the AC. Viola, TurboBoost restored on AC, SpeedStep works now on Battery, HDD spin down now works on AC as well.BIOS level is 1.26
Others have reported sucess with this procedure. I've no Idea why it should be needed on a new system, but apparently something is not setup correctly.

Z10 - High CPU and Battery Usage with BBM
I recently updated my Z10 (UK and EE Carrier) to 10.2.1.3062 and every day or so I am getting very high CPU and Battery Usage with BBM running in the background.
I have never used BBM and have no active or past conversations or contacts.
This morning, it used around 60% battery in under 3 hours, with 95% of that time sat at 'idle' in my pocket.
Sometimes its after I have connected it to my car stereo (charging and streaming music via USB) on an Alpine CDA-117Ri, but I dont think thats a cause.
Some screen grabs:

The dreaded battery with red line (battery not detected)
I've tried everything I can find to fix this problem... a little while ago, I was writing a text message when my 8900 decided to reboot. When it came back, all that was on the screen (and all I've seen since) is the battery with a red line through it. I've done battery pulls, charded for more than a day using both USB and directly into a wall... I tried to wipe and reinstall but have been unable to complete the procedure (symbol reappears part way through).... anyone out there have anything else I can try? Here is a bit more about the attempt to wipe and reinstall the OS:
Downloaded and ran JL_Cmder, was unsuccesful, it wouldn't connect to the phone. Ran AppLoader from command prompt, finally able to get it to connect to the phone by unpluging from the usb, removing and replacing the battery and plugging back in immediately as the red light came on. Got through removal of applications and instal oif JVM and system files, on the step where it waits for the device to initialize, it stops and the battery/line comes back on the screen....
any further thoughts/advice are greatly apprecaited.
Thanks
ChrisMine is doing the exact same thing...We are not the only users who have run into this SAME problem. I have searched everywhere for a solution. I've tried JL, BBsak, DM, and crackmem. Nothing works...can't seem to connect

Battery with 27 cycles NOT charging - stuck on 62% with Amperage (mA): 0
Hi All,
I replaced a 312 cycles bulging battery last October with a third party one that has been fine until last night. My son was playing WOW (which was running from his external firewire HDD) and also watching a DVD while running on the battery ONLY. It suddenly shut down with the battery at 62% and now will not run off the battery. When the magsafe charger is connected it starts up OK, but the LED on the plug remains green, and battery info says -
Battery Information:
Battery Installed: Yes
First low level warning: No
Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 5957
Remaining Capacity (mAh): 3719
Amperage (mA): 0
Voltage (mV): 11610
Cycle Count: 27
AC Charger Information:
Connected: Yes
Charging: No
I have searched this part of the forum for possible solutions, and reset the SMC, with no change to the situation. I have not yet tried resetting the PRAM. This morning I was able to try a battery from another MacbookPro, and it started up and ran fine, and the charger when connected went orange and charged correctly. This would seem to confirm that all is OK with my MacbookPro's SMC and that the problem lies with the battery status not now being correctly "seen" by the MacbookPro. I read somewhere in my searches that the battery has its own microchip controller, and so am wondering if the sudden shutdown was due to the battery current capacity being exceeded by the demands of the fully worked processor running WOW, and the external firewire drive plus DVD running - and the software running the battery's controller becoming corrupted. If this was the case, can the battery controller be fixed, "re-booted" or re-installed somehow? Anyway, any advice will be gladly received at this point, even if the news is that my son's actions have now "killed" the battery and its time for another one! Thanks Michael and Rod for your responses, and thanks Rod for suggesting the local battery specialist who I will contact tomorrow. In the meantime, casting my search wider through Google, looking for information on how to possibly re-condition MacbookPro batteries, I found some information in another forum that stated:
+sudden shutdown is a very clear symptom of a failed internal cell.+
>
+> > it sounds like there may be a defective cell in the battery.+
>
+> If a cell where defective, would it register 96% of the original on+
+> coco?+
+sure. the cell can be charged, it just doesn't hold the charge for very+
+long. That cell is first to discharge and then it might reverse charge+
+from the other healthy cells. The output voltage of the battery pack+
+drops, and if it drops below the minimum to run the computer, it+
+suddenly shuts down with no warning.+
. . . so I am now wondering if the battery may have one cell that is not as good as the others, and the intensive drain caused the sudden shutdown when the battery voltage dropped when that cell was depleted. If that was the case, the battery may be fine for normal use for many cycles yet if the depleted cell can be given a kick start possibly by a battery re-condition expert such as you suggest. I will follow this course and report their findings.
Thanks! -
my iphone 3gs ran out of power, now wehn plugged in it will not restart, tried plugging in with different chargers, holding home key and other one but nothing works, screen is either battery icon or Apple iconn
Hi, beth.lau.gr.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.

HP Compaq NC8430 is not working on ANY battery, but works with AC adapter
I have bought an used HP Compaq NC 8430.
The computer fails to power on with its battery. But it's working with AC adapter.
I blamed a bad battery but it cannot be that.
I have switched the battery with a same model's one, which is 100% working.
But the computer is not power on with the other battery. I have tried 2 more compatible batteries, still not working at all. Only working when connected with AC adapter. The yellow led lights, indicating the battery is being charged. But when unplugged from adapter, the PC is switching off instantly.
It CANNOT be the battery, as all the batteries worked on a friend's NC8430 PC.
It should be some kind of hardware fail?
I have tried to flash the BIOS, to clean the battery contacts, to remove the battery drivers in the control panel... nothing worked.
The HP battery check gives "No battery"
Please, help"No battery" sounds more like a hardware issue (battery connector), i would suggest you to contact hp tech support (http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/phone-assist.html) on the same.

My brand new Ipad 2 is not charging the battery with py PC thru USB. Is that normal? When I plug it directly into the wall, it works... Thanks! Sam
It talks extensively about charging in the user guide, and how USB ports on PCs and older Macs may not provide sufficient power to charge the iPad. The user guide is available for free from the iBook store (accessed directly via the iPad iBooks app).
My iPad charges fine when plugged in to the back of my iMac, but I would always prefer to use the mains adaptor to save the strain on my USB circuits (which can wear out if used heavily to power external devices). -
Laptop does not always power on, even with adapter or full battery
I have a Satellite A105-S4384.
What does it mean when the power button LED is a dim blue color instead of the regular bright blue color?
When I press the power button, the LED is either a bright blue or a dim blue. If it's the bright blue, everything works, and the system boots to Windows.
If it is a dim blue, then nothing happens, just a blank screen, fan is not spinning, there is no activity other than the dim blue LED on the power button. At this point I hold the power button for about 3-5 seconds to turn it back off. Usually I follow with removing the battery, holding the power button for about 10-15 seconds, and trying again.
I thought that it may be in hibernation or similar, but I checked hibernation and the power button turns amber, not a dim blue.
I have noticed that with only the adapter, I always get the dim blue LED when I power it on, which means it will not power on. Using the battery, I get mixed results, though it usually works.
I can't find any rhyme or reason to the madness, and even purchased a new battery with no luck.
Should this model work without a battery when using AC power only, or actually should any laptop work in general without the battery as long as you have ac power?
Should mention, the power plug LED indicator is blue and the battery LED indicator is lit when the AC power is applied.
Also the power LED indicator is blue when the power button is either dim or bright blue.
Thanks
Mike

2013-05-17 10.54.06.jpg 98 KBThere can only be two things as already been said the power supply(The plug), or the jack came loose from the motherboard. If you have a 3rd party plug be very careful with it, it is plausible for it to ruin the motherboard, and you don't want to replace a motherboard. If the jack is loose then it all that needs to be done is to resolder it back into place. I would recommend getting the name brand plug just for the safety of your motherboard.
I hope you find the solution to your problem. -
I am needing to replace my battery. I have a G62-358 computer. I am thinking I would like to replace it with either a mu9 or even a mu12. I understand it would physically be bigger than the mu6 I currently have, and I am okay with it. Would I harm my laptop with the battery with more cells?
thanksHi,
Based on this chart, you can only have MU06 or MU09 for G62 laptops.
Regards.

Throttle CPU utilization during software updates
Are there any settings to throttle CPU Utilization during software update installation on client computers? I am deploying updates to test systems currently and noticed that the CPU utilization was being pegged at 100% during the install. After
the updates installed, the system returned to normal. Also note that ultimately, it is the Windows Update Agent that is installing the update(s) so it's not really within ConfigMgr's scope of control and would happen no matter what method you chose to use to update these systems with Windows Updates which
leads me to believe these systems have perf issues to begin with. Are they VMs?

My battery drained. Pluged in to wall but screen shows battery with red line but doesn't seem to be recharding after 20 min. Should I wait longer or do a hard restart? I haven't backedup in ages and don't want to lose pics, contacts etc. Will a hard restart wipe all that out?
Agree with Richard:
-Your device needs both the CR and LF. To accomplish this:
option 1: Concatenate the "end of line" string constant (this is a combination of CR and LF, located in the string pallete) to all your outgoing commands. Make sure in the "Visa configure serial port" the "Termination character enable" flag is false.
option 2: Concatenate only a CR to your command's strings. Make sure in the "Visa configure serial port" the "Termination character enable" flag is TRUE AND that the termination character is set to 10 (meaning LF) which I think is the default.
Details can be seen in this link:

"Adding Termination Characters to VISA Serial Writes in LabVIEW"
Interesting would be to configure the serial port to accept not one but two termination characters. The above links refers to the document "Developer Zone Tutorial: Termination Characters in NI-VISA.", where this is supposed to be possible. The document however is 404'ed.
If someone find a working link please post it.

Macbook Pro will not power on without battery installed
Hi there,
I have a Macbook Pro A1226 that fails to power on without a battery installed.
i.e. will not run off AC power on its own. I have tried 2 other power adapters, no change. All 3 adapters are outputting the correct voltage without fluctuations.
But, if I am in OSX with a battery plugged in, shutdown the laptop, remove the battery while AC is still plugged in, it will power back on without any issues. But as soon as I remove the battery, it will not power back on using just AC.
Is this an I/O board issue, or a mainboard?
I have power drained the unit and reset the parameter ram.
ThanksAny update on this? This is the same thing that's going on with my laptop right now. I was at the Genius Bar and they said they can send it in for repair. Takes 7-9 days and costs a minimum of $310. At the time I was there, my computer wouldn't start up at all, because the battery had drained to less than 20%. It didn't even start with just the power cord (no battery in). The "genius" finally got it to work by doing a PRAM and SMC reset. Got home and was able to recharge my battery to 100%. Used my computer for 2 days before I dared to take it off the power supply. Lo and behold, as soon as I take it off the power cord, then re-connect it, it shows "Not Charging". I tried to do SMC again, but no luck. Keeps saying "not charging". Even tried with a brand new battery. Do I have to get the I/O board thingy replaced?

I have an older iPod that no longer shows up in iTunes or appears to be charging. When I press the Menu and Select buttons, the Apple logo appears and then an icon of a battery with an exclamation point. Is it dead for good?
If it is otherwise working, you can change the battery. If you want to do it yourself, you can buy the part on eBay and other online sources. Just make sure you know the type of iPod you have so that you get the right part.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1353
There are online guides, including the ones on this web site
http://www.ifixit.com/Device/iPod
(Note: Most replacement batteries come with plastic/nylon tools seen in the guides.)
You can also have a repair business do the work.
If it is just the battery, if you do a Reset (using the Menu and Select buttons) while it is connect to your computer, I think it should still be recognized by iTunes. -

Hello swampdonkey,
I see that you are having a problem with the sound and battery on the computer. I would like to help with this issue but I need some information.
Can you provide the model and product number of the computer? Here is a link that shows how to find that information.
