W520 power supply shape, why is it no more round?

Hi all,
I don't know if I am the only one complaining about this, did not found other post about it.
Why is the AC adapter now have 2 prong on the, use to be, round connector.
I can no more grab the cable and shove-it in, I need to look at it and find the perfect alignment!?!?!
After all, it is only 2 circular contacts
I know this is really minor, but it is bugging me and I had to share.
Else that, nice to see that it come with Chrome installed on it.
Solved!
Go to Solution.

To plug it in without looking:
1. Hold the grey plug in your fingers.
2. Feel the plug, rotate it until you come to a flat surface on the plug.
3. Plug the plug into the laptop with one flat side facing up and and the other facing down (assuming the laptop is lying flat on a surface that is parallel to the ground).

  • W520 power supply rating vs. performance question

I have had a W520 with the i2820 processor option and the quadro 1000 video for over 3 weeks now. I bought several spare 170 watt power bricks for it, but in one location I kept the 135 watt brick from my W510.
When I moved from the w500 to the w510, when I used a 90 watt w500 brick, the w510 would boot with a BIOS level message that said that the power supply was not adequate and that the machine would be stepped down to a slower speed. The reduction in performance was dramatic and noticable. (The w510 had the 45 watt consumption i920 chip and the more power hungry graphics)
When I use or boot the w520 with the 135 watt supply, there is no message. My benchmarks do not change from those registered when on the 170 watt power supply, starting with the Win 7 system benchmarks for processor and video. Further, the 135 watt brick is cooler to the touch than the 170 watt one under sustained usage (3 hours plus).
The question: given that the w520 in my configuration seems to draw less power than the hot and hungry w510, is the 135 watt supply going to work "as well as" the 170 watt one? As a briefcase lugger, any way to shed weight is valued.
Other considerations: I have no WWAN card installed, and have the CD/DVD removed and substituted with an SSD. The main drive is also SSD, bringing down somewhat the power requirements.

I remember another post, that I can't seem to find now, which refers to a software utility that displays wattage being consumed by the system.  This would be quite helpful.
Couldn't that be used to study what is being used, and how much of a power adapter is needed to operate the system?
I am trying to come up with a solution for vehicle usage, and I am afraid, it will have to be a 12V to 120v power inverter with a brick plugged into it.
Another factor will be the amount of power consumed when recharging the internal 9cell battery and the external 9cell slice. Doing this while operating the system with WiFi / WWAN active will increase the demand.

  • 1st Gen iMac G5 BAd Power Supply

Hi, My iMac G5 power supply is officially dead. It was confirmed at the Apple Store at the Genius Bar. Apple apparently no longer sells the power supply for the first gen iMac G5s. I have two questions: Does anyone have a suggestion on where to buy a 3rd party power supply for that model? I'm not exactly sure what I should be buying. And secondly, is it worth it to do? I know the second question is more opinion but I'm curious of the success rate of replacing the power supply. My preference is obviously to replace it rather than laying out the money for a new iMac which I probably can't do right now) but if anyone's experience is that I'm just throwing money away on the power supply because of future issues or unreliability, I'd like to hear about it.
    Thanks as always!

[Synaptech.com] or [welovemacs.com] will not only sell you the correct part, they will give you installation instructions. Another source is [http://www.jimwarholic.com/2008/07/how-to-repair-apple-imac-g5.php]
As to your second question, as long as the rest of the Mac is in good shape, replacing the power supply should give you a few more years to collect your pennies for a new one down the road.

  • MEGA PC 651 Power Supply Needed

Hi wonder if anyone can help. My power supplys fan has died so the system is getting quite warm shall we say (about 52oC normal).
I need to replace this asap and reading this forum there are problems at to extra conections for the HIFI in off mode.
I actually dont use the radio or DVD player in off mode so i am not bothered about these conections.
Anyone know of a UK available power supply that i can replace this defective one with.??

Sorry didnt make it clear. The fan does work if i connect it to a 12v supply, but the internal board in the Power Supply isnt powering the fan.
Got round this by, detaching the fan from the power supply, and splicing it nto a motherboard power connector. Now when i turn it on the power supply re supplies the internal fan from outside supply.

  • Power Supply / Support

Currently my powermac G5 is at the service department due to a failed power supply. The machine is no more than 2 months old and now I am waiting for Apple to get their power supply in stock so I can get my machine back up and running.
I'd have to say this is the worst experience I've ever had with Computer support. I've dealt with Dell, IBM, Compaq and they are all very supporative and quick regarding the repair of my machine.
The lady I spoke with intially when I first had the problem said had me try a bunch of crap that I had already done but insisted I try. When I told her I think it is a hardware failure she continued to make me try some tests. I repeated that I believed it was a hardware failure and she went on to say that there was nothing she could do and I needed to contact an authorized service provider and hung up.
Now I'm waiting for this power supply to come in, with no accurate date of arrival (still says 2/2 ship date) and my service provider is no help either. This machine is for a business and I am very lucky that we have an extra power mac to do work on otherwise we would be SOL. I would expect when purchasing apple care they have some sort of next day service as any other large PC manufacturere does.
I personally own a 15" PB but have to say Apple's customer service is the pits.

s... "Well Mr. so & so,
looks like we have to special order a screwdriver to
be able to remove the processers, to get to the power
supply, that we hope have in the next few days and
then we can get this fixed"
The processor screws strip easy too. Mine had to be replaced. Luckily, the independent Apple dealer I went to had everything in stock and had me going the same day I took it in.

  • G4 won't startup but ticking sound in power supply area when plugged in

My G4 had been fine since the HD went bad years ago and was replaced.
Didn't use it much for a while, then would start normally but shut down with no warning after a few minutes. Then after seconds, then power btn would light up but shut down immediately.
Replaced battery and pushed PMU button. (button doesn't seem to react in any way so don't know if pushed properly or not)
Then nothing happens at all when I push the startup button. But I noticed a quiet ticking sound coming from the area of the power supply, and remembered I had heard that noise lately not knowing where it came from (when it's plugged in but not on). It has always been plugged to a APC BACKUPS 500.
Put back old battery and no difference.
I hope the power supply is not dead, probably cost more than a G4 to replace it.
    Any clues? Thanks

OK, I found the info I was looking for on the forum, which was:
"Disconnect all external devices/cables/cords except the power cord.
Touch a metal slot cover on the back of the Mac as a static electricity discharge precaution.
    Remove the battery.
Reset the PMU, depressing the button for a five-count.
Depress the front power button, again for a five count.
Wait 30 minutes or so to insure the capacitors on the logic board are fully discharged.
    Reinsert the battery.
Reconnect the power cord, mouse, keyboard, and monitor and attempt startup."
After doing this, the power button did light up! BUT went out immediately
    Same thing several tries.
Also when I plugged it in after the 30 min without battery, there was the ticking sound for a few seconds, but then stopped. Hmm. ?

  • I just got my iPhone 4 a week ago, and I realized that whenever the battery reaches 55% or less, it automatically shuts down. I have to charge it again to turn it on. I won't turn on unless there is an external power supply to it. Why is this so?

I got my iphone 4 a week ago, but i realized that whenever the battery reaches 55% it automatically turns off and will not turn on unless its connected to a power supply (AC charger or USB on pc). I tried hard resetting it but it did not work. Havent restored it. Any idea why is this so? I hope it has nothing to do with the battery.

    Hi,
Not that's not normal and is one of the Problems I was having before Restoring as New...
Just make sure you Sync ALL your important Info... Contacts... Music... Etc... to your Computer...
and then do a Restore as New...
i was a bit reluctant at First, because I hadn't done it before... But it was So Easy and am Really Glad I did...

  • Why is the power supply for the Mini so big?e

Can anyone explain why the power supply / adapter for the mac mini is so big compared to the power adapters for the macbook? The processor and hard drive for the mini is the same as those for the macbook, so why is the power brick so much bigger? Just curious.

While I doubt anyone who knows for sure will be prepared to pop up and answer, I suspect the reason is two-fold: firstly that the supply is engineered for constant use, 24/7, where laptop supplies are not, and thus it is larger because the components are more rugged and over-specced, and secondly for lowest cost, since it is cheaper to engineer a larger product of this kind than a smaller one, due to the premium cost of the smallest narrow-tolerance components.

  • Why does my FP-1600 take a 24V .5 Amp Power Supply and drop the Voltage to 11V at .5 Amps?

I have a FP-1600 connected to 4 FP-TB-1 bases. 2 FP-AI-100, 1 FP-TC-120, and 1 FP-AO-210 modules. I am powering the FP-1600 with a 24 V .5 A power supply. There are no devices currently connected to any of the modules. The power supply should be supplying 12 W, which should be enough to power the FP-1600 and the 4 modules according to the power requirement calculation in the manual P = 7 W + 1.15*#modules. When I install the third module, the FP-1600 stops communicating. Checking the power supply I see that the voltage drop across the power terminals on the FP-1600 is only 11V and then measuring the current being drawn it is .5 Amps, which is only 5.5 W, not enough to power the devices. When I unhook the power supply and measure the Voltage it is 24 V.
Why is the FP-1600 dropping the Voltage to 11V? Should I just purchase a 12V 2 Amp power supply?
    Thanks for any help
    Jeremy

    Hello jqk,
You got it figured out. The maximum current that can be drawn is .5 which is too small. As the current being drawn approaches the maximum allowable current, the voltage will begin to drop. Eventhough the current you measure is .5A, the fact that the voltage is 11V means that the circuit requires more current to function properly.
As a rule of thumb, you want the maximum current your power supply can deliver to be at least the double of the system's maximum current consumption.

  • Why do I have to have my phone plugged into a power supply to sync wirelessly?

What is the point in being able to sync wirelessly if I still have to have my phone plugged into a power supply?  If I have to plug it into the wall, I may as well plug it into my Mac. That's pointless.

Yes, I realize that, but that pretty much makes the wireless sync pointless. You know what I mean? If I have to plug it in to anything I might as well plug it into my Mac

  • Why are my purchases made on one device showing up as "waiting" to download on my other devices, until I plug those devices into a power supply?

Any time I make a purchase on one device, say my Mac Book, the items show as "waiting" in the downloads area of my iPad and iPhone. Once I plug those devices in to a power supply, they begin to download.
note that automatic downloads in all format types are turned on on all devices.
Any ideas on if there's a power setting that I can change somewhere to make it NOT a requirement that my devices be plugged in to automatically download?? I know you are all shocked to hear this, but I did not have this problem prior to iOS 8. (Both my iPad and iPhone have 8.1)

The iPod has to be powered on, and it has to have a live wifi connection.  If it is not showing up it may be powered off, the battery may have died, it may be in sleep mode (the wifi radio is off in sleep mode when running on the battery), or it may not be in range of any known wifi networks.
Also, since the tracking feature is a function of iCloud account credentials, if the device has been reset as new, then your daughters iCloud account and its settings will have been erased.  In that case, the device will never show up again.
If the device did not have a passcode lock and/or account restrictions enabled on it, then anyone finding it could also go into the iCloud account settings and disable the "find my iPod" setting.
