W520 randomly freezes, now cannot be started and even reinstalled

I badly need your help!
I purchased my W520 (500 HDD, 8G, i7-2720) on 2011, and it has been working greatly. Since few month back, my W520 start to have a problem: it randomly freeze for no reason. The freezing can happen any time and even without use. The pointer/mouse, touchpad, keyboard and Ctrl+Alt+Del return no response at all. So everytime I have to use a hard restart. At beginning, I thought it is due to some viruses. However this still happens after I reinstall the system using recovery function. I did installed all updates after the installation. It is also unlikely related to overheating as it happens under no use and temps around 60 degrees.
Very recently the problem went worse and it was freezing very frequently. So yesterday I tried to reinstall the system again. However this time it freezes during the reinstallation process (twice). I have to use the hard restart again! After that I found the computer is totally dead. I can not start my computer or start the reinstallation process at all. It looks like the recovery disk has been damaged.
Now I have two primary questions:
1) What is the reason for the freezing? Could anybody give me your thoughts? is it likely a hardware problem or software problem?
2) Now I have to make the computer work first. Should I get a clean Win-7 or Win-8 system installed? or I should purchase a OEM CD for installation?

Sorry, but it could be hardware or software, but I am guessing hardware. The most likely cause is heat, but you seemed to have ruled that out. I would run a memory test first. I often use memtest86+. Then a disk test. I would look in the event log for any serious messages related to a device failure. Several months ago, I had a similar problem that turned out to be the CPU. (the only failed CPU I ever had to deal with) After trying a motherboard swap, the last remaining part was the CPU, which turned out to be the problem. I don't remember if it was a W510 or a W520. I remember it was a quad core CPU and I didn't have the right CPU in stock so I tried it with a dual-core i7. When the problem went away, I got the correct replacement, and after installing, there were no more issues.

Well, it is definitely a file system issue but of course it won't be an nfs issue if you have a local mount point. I resolved this issue in UNIX by unmounting the file system is question.
I didn't realize how important the . and .. directories are to SAP executables.
In my /usr/sap/<SID> path, only "." showed up in when using the ls -l command with the <sid>adm user.
As root though, the "." and ".." paths were listed.
After unmounting the file system I saw that the path was owned by roo.system.
Changed the file system ownership to <sid>adm:sapsys with full permissions(probably not needed).
All is well... took quite a while to find this... then of course, found OSS note 1917102 which pointed to OSS note 130683 (which had my solution. note title is misleading and I overlooked it at first.)
Hope this saves someone valuable time.

Since yesterday morning about 11:00 I have been having TERRIBLE email problems on this iPad 3G. Email comes in (I hear the sound) but nothing displays -- no folders, no content, no nothing in e-mail. The blank email screen shows up and then disappears after about 10 seconds, taking me back to the Home Screen.
Right now, the only way I can see email on this device is to log onto AOL via the AOL app.
I have been doing a lot of online reading about the problem. It has to do with iOS 8.1.3 and it affects older iPads and iPhones. I'm having no problems on my iPod touch, which -- fortunately -- is so old it cannot update its iOS 6.
I waited to update the iOS on this iPad until iOS 8 was "mature." That was about 2 weeks ago.
Anybody know know if Apple is aware? working on a solution?

Unfortunately what you need is something that is designed for PowerPC Macs. Stuff that is designed for Intel Macs will not work. The PowerPC (PPC) Mac software is getting scarcer. Macs in 2006 shifted to Intel CPUs. Stuff that is designated Universal will work, and you can buy the retail 10.5 if you have no Mac OS 9 related software that needs to load. If you partition your hard disk, or use an external Firewire hard drive partition just for booting into 10.4.11 or earlier, you can still use Classic for Mac OS 9. Sounds like that phone was unlocked by hacking or jailbreaking , maybe the reason why you are unable to restore your phone.

PowerBook G4 has loud buzzing, then freezes, now won't start

I have a PowerBook G4 which started to make low "grinding" noises when it worked hard. It had done this for maybe a couple of months: sometimes the position (on lap or on table, etc) seemed to affect it. I always figured it was the fan(s). But a little while ago it suddenly started making a loud buzzing noise, like a fuzz-tone electric guitar or maybe an electric razor. If I put it to sleep the noise would start, and it would not start immediately upon re-awakening. I'm not really sure where the noise was coming from. Otherwise the computer was still functioning normally, so I figured a fan was going bad. Then it just froze, and I had to turn it off. Upon powering on, it got to the point with a gray screen, an Apple logo, and a bar that spins in a circle. Never more than that. I've booted the install disk and run Disk Utility: it found some big discrepancy, in a file allocation I think, but fixed it. Since then I've repaired and verified: disk appears OK. I've run the hardware tests and everything tests OK. I can also get the terminal by booting from CD 1, and can do directory listings of the disk contents. So the disk seems to be OK. I removed the suspect fan: the left one, and looked at it. Aside from some dust in the filter it looked and spun fine, as far as I could tell.
Upon booting in "verbose" mode, I get the following:

These two lines just repeat...
I've got two questions here:
1) What should I do to get the computer operational again? Is there a netinfo restore I can do, or should I reinstall the OS (10.4) from the install disks?

An update: I have reinstalled the OS, and all my user files were still there in Previous Systems, so I lost no data. The noise has recurred a few times, and I listened for its location: it really did sound as though it was coming from the upper left. No system freeze, though: the noise stopped on its own after the period of intense cpu activity finished. I have checked the disk with the Disk Utility, and it verifies (I did not do this in single-user mode, however). So far, so good: it looks as though my left rear fan is going bad.
Could that somehow cause the system lockup? If maybe the system temperature reached a high point?
I have installed the iStat widget and have looked at that when I hear the low "grinding" sound, and it shows the left rear fan running at about 1740 rpm. But the right fan is at 0. Is this normal?
The Apple Hardware reported no errors: I guess that means both fans are at least operational enough for the test. But what will make the system use the right fan as opposed to the left? Is maybe the right fan not coming on, then the left fan has to work too hard, and so now is failing? I have no idea what a "normal" rpm is for those fans.
Also, at this point maybe this topic is more suitable for another forum. If so, please advise.

MacBook Pro, randomly Windows 7 doesn't start and screen goes blank

Hi, I installed Windows 7 (Ultimate 64-bit) using the BootCamp on my MacBook Pro (MBP) i7, mid 2010. Installation was successful without any issues. This is my first Mac and, for now, I primarily use Windows on my MBP. The problem: After selecting Windows OS, randomly, Windows doesn't start and the screen goes blank. When this happens, most of the time I have to press the power button twice and press the Option key again to restart in Windows. Sometimes I have to hold down power button for several seconds to turn off MBP, then power it back on to start over. Windows 7 seems to restart on second try every time.
I can tell when the screen will go blank and Windows will not start, when the blinking cursor does not appear on upper left corner of the screen. Also, I enabled Windows OS Boot Log and nothing displays when this happens.
I took in my MBP, twice, to local Apple store Genius Bar and I was told that it was a Windows problem and I must purchase AppleCare Protection Plan to get help resolving the blank screen. It was explained to me that AppleCare had Windows experts who can help with resolving the issue. Therefore I purchased the AppleCare Protection Plan and spoke to AppleCare directly and still no resolution.
Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

There is a forum specifically for Boot Camp, this is a general MBP forum and most of us don't use Boot Camp or Windows. The link to that forum is:

Apple does support Boot Camp however if your problem is with Windows Apple does not support a Microsoft product. You would need to contact Microsoft for help.

Firefox has always opened a blank new tab, if it opened to anything else that would be caused by an add-on. Check your add-ons to see if any offer this feature, or if any were disabled when you updated to Firefox 4.

N8 random freezes, now died.

I have had my N( for just over two years now. Its 2009 mod. For nearly a year ago it started to freeze often, most during internet surfing, youtube or typing in mail. Now its died altogheter, i'we tried the restart with holding the on button etc, with no luck. I know the guarantee is obsolete, but the phone is not beaten up signiffcant. Is it posible to open it and take the battery out and buy a new one?

Q150 randomly freezes, now won't POST

Hi guys - we have a Q150 that we're using as an HTPC/NAS on our network. It has two external USB drives connected, one of which is HFS+ (with MacDrive running to read it), both of which are shared on the network for our WD TV Live to access. Recently it has started to freeze up completely, requiring a hard power cycle to restart. Frozen mouse, etc - just totally locked up.
Now, it will power up, the power LED comes on, and I hear the CPU fan running, but it doesn't get any further. No POST, no BIOS stuff, nothing. No beeps either.
This makes me think CPU, memory, or MB. What do you guys think? Unfortunately I don't have any spare parts laying around to test this since the Q150 is so proprietary, other than the memory.

Well, after waiting a few hours, the computer booted again, and made it into Windows. Then about 4 or 5 minutes later, it froze again. Tried to boot, and it made it to the Windows startup screen, then froze, with the HDD LED still blinking. Tried to boot again, and this time it's back to the first scenario - no POST, no beeps, nothing. What could cause this kind of behavior? It's definitely not a heat issue since the computer had only been on for a few minutes when it froze, and the case was completely cool to the touch. But why would it fail to boot/POST, then make it all the way into Windows just by waiting a few hours?

Constant freezes, now cannot install 10.4 without problems

Well, my computer recently started having problems. Constant freezes, the grey screen that comes up and tells me to restart. Application crashes. I could not figure out what the problem was, the only think I have done to the machine recently is add the superdrive from another G4 and put it in mine, that would not cause a problem, would it? Luckly I have a backup drive, so I have not lost everything.
So I thought I would reinstall 10.4, which seemed ok, what the system was install, I tried to do all the updates, but the system update failed, and it could not install the OS X updates. So, I restarted and got a kernal error, and could no longer boot into my new fresh system, strange. So, I tried again, did a complete reinstall, and tried to do a manual upgrade of OS X. I got the dmg file from apple's site, and tried again, at the end of the install, it told me to try again, that there was an error. Restart again, no kernal error, but all I got was the grey apple screen, with the spinning indicator, and it never booted. So I am stumped. What could be causing this on a new install? I am thinking maybe it could be the hard drive. My backup drive that I boot off of is working fine, so I don't think it is any other hardware. Any ideas why a fresh install would start off this way, and continue to cause problems?

Yes, bad RAM can cause all sorts of issues. Replace it and see how it goes. Most good suppliers have lifetime warranties these days. If you can't get it replaced, try a Mac friendly brand such as Crucial. I have had trouble free operation with mine.

Microsoft Office CD cannot be started and installed on Equium series

Hi, please can anyone help?
I have a Microsoft Office Professional edition 2003 that i use at work and loads onto other pc's ok, but ive brought it home to load on my Equium and when i insert the disk into the drive it doesnt even recognise it !!!

Because of your first statement it seems the Office CD is ok and the notebook drive cannot recognize and read the medium.
I think its a drive lens problem. Maybe its dirty or it cannot calibrate correctly

My videos are defaulted to Quicktine and I have downloaded the latest QT player but all my movie clips now cannot be played and I get this error message Error-2002 a bad public movie atom was found in the movie.

I have used quicktime player downloads for movie clips made for equipment inspections. However in 2011 I encountered a problem when trying to view previously made movie clips that are in the quicktime player format but they won't play giving the messgae : Error-202 a bad movie atom was found in the movie,
I have downloaded the latest Quicktime player but the problem still remains. However late in 2011 when this problem was encountered I downloaded the the latest QT player download and then could play the movie clips but now the problem is back.
How do I fix this problem.

The new file will probably work. (vs troubleshooting your Windows PC can take ages, to no avail)
