W520 Shuts down when I apply pressure to the palmrest

Okay Background stuff:  Previously, my w520 had been freezing and shutting down at random right after I started the computer.  I had the motherboard replaced and it was fixed, but now I have a new problem (that may have had to do with the fix)
When I lean too hard or push down on the spot to the left of the trackpad (near the windows and intel logo stickers) the screen turns all one color (it varies) for a while, and the computer shuts down.
I guess its not an urgent problem since it only happens if I forget not to lean there but I was wondering if there's an easy explanation or fix.  I couldn't find any posts about anything like this.  Hopefully someone can shed some light!
Thanks!

Hi, gtlane
To me, it sounds like the repair is responsible for this problem, seeing as you did not face this issue before the motherboard replacement. Some part of the motherboard or other internal component is turning off due to the pressure. I would recommend contacting Lenovo Support and telling them of the issue, if you plan to get it fixed.
Best,
Adam

  • Why does iTunes shut down when i try to access the store?

My iTunes has worked fine for many years but recently it started shutting down as soon as i clicked the Store, Match or Ping link.

Just deleting and reinstalling the software won't delete your music. Your music is stored on your computer. But, you should backup your iTunes purchases on a timely basis regardless.

  • My ipod shuts down when I connect it to the computer.

My ipod works perfectly fine. But when I connect it to my computer it just shuts down. Sometimes it says low battery. And sometimes it just shuts right off. I tried to reset it, but that doesn't help. And my computer won't recognize it because the power won't come on when its connected. Any suggestions??

If you put it into disk mode and connect it to your computer can you see it in Device Manager or My Computer?

  • Front Row shuts down when ever I click on the movies button

I have read through the majority of issues on the DQ board. My problem differs as I can use iTunes, DVD, and iPhoto through Front Row but when ever I select Movies it just closes unexpected and I am back to the desktop.
Have rebooted, no go. I only have 2 movie files (less that 50megs each), no go. I am in the admin account.
    Any ideas?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Can you create a new use with the Accounts System Preferences, log out and log in as the new user? Do they encounter the same trouble? (With or without any movies in the new "Movies" folder? If they do encounter the same issue, then you have a system-wide or hardware problem. (It's doubtful it's a hardware problem.) Is your Front Row up-to-date? The current version is 1.3. Is your QuickTime up-to-date? The current version is 7.1.6. Since videos are played through the QuickTime Player (even if they live in iTunes), it's important that both Front Row and QuickTime are up-to-date.

  • Why does Elements stop working and shut down when I try to use the smartbrush tool?

I can use the smart brush tool until I need to change the color. The second I try to change the color of my object, I get a pop up window that says there is a problem and windows has to close to the program. I have already restarted my computer and it still does it.

There is an update available for Elements 13 which has stability fixes. Please install this update and let me know if you are still facing this issue.

  • Itunes shuts down when clicking anything

My iTunes shuts down when I click anything on the screen other than the music. If I click anything on the sidebar (Store, Playlists, Library, etc.) or the album artwork it shuts down. I have tried pulling all the iTunes preferences out of the library and restarting the computer. This does not fix the problem. This has been going on for a few months, but I have been downloading the newest versions of iTunes and it continues to happen.

    Hey chaimoy,
It seems like you may be experiencing an unexpected quit from iTunes when importing a file into the iTunes library. I have an article for you that addresses this circumstance, and it can be found below:

  • Shuts down when I close my MB. What's the crack?

I've read a bit about this on other threads but I just don't get it.
My MB has done this about 30 times since I've had it. It's 6 months old.
For the last 3 days it has done it every day. Is it getting worse?
There is no pattern to follow. Just sometimes when I close the screen I hear the chime and I open up to the blue start up screen.
Is there any known remedy to this? It's doing my head in.

When you close the lid, the MacBook should go to sleep. If you choose "sleep" from the Apple menu, does the MacBook shut down then as well?
If so, it's unlikely you have a hardware problem (since no hardware is involved with the selection of the menu option). You might try try restarting and holding down the "shift" key to startup in "safe" mode. Does it behave the same way in "safe" mode? If not, then you may have a third-party software conflict.
If it doesn't shut down when you choose "sleep" from the Apple menu, it's possible that you have a hardware problem with the switch that tells the MacBook when you've opened or closed the MacBook. Does the MacBook shut down if you put it to sleep first from the menu before you close the lid?

  • InDesign Shuts Down When Saving

    InDesign CS3 5.0.2
InDesign shuts down when saving a file. The ONLY time it seems to act up is when we try to save using any option except for "save a copy." There are no numbers, messages, etc. outside of the standard: "InDesign has encountered a problem and must shut down. We apologize for any inconvenience..."
When it does shut down, whatever file was open at the time is lost. Totally. I have yet to be able to locate the previous file using any means.
Has anyone else had this problem. Any fix?

Normally I would recommend replacing your preferences as a first step. I'm not sure quite how to test, though, without putting something at risk.
Maybe replace the prefs, open a new file that won't matter, save a copy, then try a save as and see what happens. You might also try turning off video hardware acceleration, but that seems tenuous, as does a bad font.
Is there a network involved, or are you working locally? If yes, what kind of network? Have you tried working locally?
If none of this has any effect you may need to reinstall, but I hate to put anyone through that pain without a better idea of what the problem is.

    Used disk utility
    How do I do this?
-1. Uninstalling any third-party plug-ins or enhancements for the application that's quitting unexpectedly. When you update an application or Mac OS X, a plug-in or enhancement you previously installed may not be compatible any longer.
Checked to updates for Address Book software – none, however there was an update for OSX to 10.4.8 - should I do this?.
Disconnected all other devices (should I have to do this?? Printer? Speakers?)
    Also suggested
Running Apple Hardware Test, on a disc that came with your computer. If you just installed hardware, such as additional memory, Apple Hardware Test can tell you if it's defective. If you can't find Apple Hardware Test, take your computer to an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
    Should I do this?

  • N900 shuts down when opening slider

Does anyone else have this problem? I believe I've figured out that it happens when I put a certain battery in it. I have three, total, because my previous phone was a 5800, so I had ordered an extra one. So, now I have three that I can use in my N900.
I think it is an official Nokia battery because it looks exactly like the others...
Anyway, my phone shuts down when I open the slider, using a fully-charged battery. The lights dim as if it is a power failure and it does not reboot like the others having the reboot problem...
    Sorry for rambling on!
    Any ideas? Thanks
    Recent phones: N91, N95-4, 5800xm, N900, E7, & now the beautiful N9

    Hi guys
I have a very similar problem and have been unable to enjoy my phone!
I got a new N900 yesterday, for the 2nd time, but the device is still manifesting the same symptoms:
    - shuts itself down regularly, whether in use or not;
    - sliding the keyboard back in causes it to shut down;
    - it shut down when it was taken off the charger;
    - I left it on the charger overnight and it stayed up all night (>10hrs);
    - even when it is on (for a short while) the screen stays inactive and blank permanently, and the device shuts down when I attempt to slide it open to check that it is indeed on
    - attempt to start it up again are not always responded to, and when it does it starts to boot up and then dies again
    - it barely stays up long enough to use it for any purpose
    - sometimes the charger responds to the power supply and sometimes it doesn't
This was exactly what was happening with the new one I recieved from and sent back to Nokia within days. They asked me to return it without the battery and charger and claimed to have tested the new one before sending it back to me. I have put in the battery and used the charger from the previous new device.
I have tried to analyse the problem and I am beginning to think that the issue might be related to either a dodgy battery or charger. What do you think?
I have asked Nokia to send me a replacement charger and batter. In the meantime, have you any suggestions I could try?
    Thanks.

  • Brand-spanking new battery, but still shuts down when unplugged!!

A few days ago, my 2006 MacBook would shut down when I disconnect it from the power adapter. To restart the laptop, I must have the power adapter connected. That gray screen with the apple stays longer than usual, ~5 seconds. I reset the SMC, PRAM, and checked the battery condition in the System Profiler. It had 500 charge cycles, so I went ahead and bought a new battery.
PROBLEM IS NOT SOLVED. Even with a brand new, fully charged battery, the laptop shuts down when I disconnect the power adapter. I used my boyfriend's adapter to charge the battery and the issue persists. I did the whole resetting stuff, no luck. Battery is on charge cycle 2 and in normal condition. I'm up to date on software updates.
Anybody know what is going on and how to resolve this??? Please help!

Okay, and you've done the various resets, so the next things that come to mind are:
    1) Bad DC-in board, which is the Magsafe Board in the newer machines. Instructions for replacement are here(you can also order parts & tools): http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/Installing-MacBook-Core-2-Duo-Magsafe-Board/5 20/1. Obviously, if your machine is in warranty, have the Apple store fix the computer.
    2) Faulty logicboard. If this is the case, you want to just work with the computer as-is, or sell it and invest the money in a new machine.

  • Shuts down when unplugged & moved/lifted/pressure applied

This is really weird for me. Just got my macbook a couple of months ago, refurbeished, first generation. Love it. Suddenly, the battery started giving me problems, and the machine would shut down when id unplug the magsafe usually. Sometimes it would stay on for a moment, until I tried to pick it up, open or closed, and it then shuts right down.
I read up on here, did all the software updates and stuff with no results, and took it into Apple. They checked it out, determined bad battery, and gave me a "fresh" one on the spot. Seemed to work fine at the store, they had me take it home. Dandy!
I get home and start charging it up. Seems alright. Next day , on "full charge" I go to take the machine to another room, and after a few seconds walking with it, shuts down. So frustrating. This seems to happen when ti computer is given very slight movement, and allllways when I try to pick it up from the bottom, applying pressure on the bottom of the case and or battery. This however, does not happen when the computer is running off of AC power, i can shake it and wobble it with no problems.
Aside from this, the "new battery" from apple seems quirky. Battery "health" in iStat shows only 86% while my original battery had 100% health even after 2 months use. Also, the machine has been intermittently not recognizing the battery, showing an X'd battery in the menubar, and then showing things like it will take 1423 hours to charge or i'll have 1456 hrs to use battery power, just a lot of quirky stuff that I never saw with my other battery.
I'm just getting concerned that this is potentially a problem with the machine itself, not the batteries. The only thing swaying me away from that thought is that i have no problem using the machine while plugged in.
Quite honestly, I don't always trust the "geniuses". Some seem sharp, some, much less so. I ask you guys first, before I go back tonight, what are your impressions on this problem? What are specific things I should be asking the "geniuses" tonight?
A laptop is useless to me if I can't actually move it around while running, I've gotta get this resolved, and I really dont want to ship my machine out.
Any questions I can answer about th esituation, let me know, and THANK YOU, in advance.

Very interesting. When I upgraded my RAM I had a load of trouble with that outer slot. The little "eject" bar swayed both ways and didn't really kick the card out, I eventually used a swall tweezer to help get it out. (I'd probably want to put the original Apple RAM back in there before bringing back to store huh?)
Anyway... it is infact right around that area where my fingers push up when I try to pick up the computer....this is all kind of making sense now. Being a refurb, also noticed a tiny screw was installed crooked behind the L bar, leading me to belive someone has already gone somewhat deep in there before I ever got the machine.... ****, I hope I didn't get a lemon macbook. discounteggroll, I'm in Westchester, NY. I have two Apple stores around me that I can get to fairly easily... we're you implying they might do it there?
Also, side question: If I did have to send my comp out for an extended period, would it be crazy to want to swap out my HD? I'm not really interested in people potentially going through all my personal stuff, y'know?
And again, it brings me back to the AC cord... would/could it really be a logic board issue, even if th ecomputer is fine while plugged in?
Thanks again for all your help
