W520 Speed so low.

Dear friends,
my w520 just arrived after some delays, i was satisfied my previous lenovo products but this one is beyond my understanding so i would like to consult with you guys.
the configuration is as below: i7-2960xm, 8gb, Quadro 2000m, 320gbx2 (RAID 1), WIN7 64bit, i also order docking (170w) to be able to have multiple displays.
i believe the configuration is high-end however 3 problems i have:
1- the laptop is extremely slow, which i wonder whether it is becuase of RAID 1 or why?
2- multiple displays:  i need to work with  3 external lcd while thinkpay display closed. however even i have the dociking i cannot achieve this.
please if anybody can help, i will really appreciate it.
thanks.

Hi, Boom,
I can't address slow, but I can tell you that the W520 drives but two external monitors, even with the mini-dock. For a third, I use a Displaylink device. I recommend the Toshiba Dynadock, but there are cheaper ways to go.
drives 2 extra external displays
For other options, see: Displaylink
In fact, you could eliminate the mini-dock and just use the Toshiba to drive a total of three external displays, but I like having both.
BTW: RAID 1 can slow the system, as you suggest, because the disks have to synchronize redundant data. I'm not at all sure this is your problem, but I don't like RAID 0 (reliability) or RAID 1 (speed).

  • Jump to tablet-version when internet speed is low?

Is there a way for a Muse page to hump to tablet version on a computer, when internet speed is low. I have experienced that my site has a really long upload time when several computers are on the same wi-fi. It would be nice if it then automatically jumped to tablet.

    Hi,
There is no native feature in Muse to accomplish this. Maybe you can accomplish this using some custom Javascript.

  • High speed and Low Speed CAN

    Hi
This is my first time to use CAN.
I have LabVIEW  2010 and  LabVIEW FPGA
I have NI 3110 Dual-Core Industrial Controller with Windows OS, NI 9157, NI 9852 CAN Low Speed Module and NI 9853 CAN High Speed Module to be used to monitor the CAN messages from an ECU unit.
The connection is done as the following:
    ·         The High speed CAN is connected to the NI-CAN 9853 (Port 0)
    ·         The low speed CAN is connected to the NI-CAN 9852 (Port 0)
    ·         The baud rate of the 9853 is 500kbps
    ·         The baud rate of the 9852 is 50kbps
    ·         Both modules are set to “Listen Only”
    ·         “Module Clock” in both modules is set to 20MHz
    ·         CAN networks are 29-bit and 11-bit.
My consideration is to read all the messages from both modules without losing any message. Below is a picture from the block diagram on the FPGA target, is this the best way to read CAN messages from both modules? Also, could you please suggest what is the best way to read the messages on Host vi?
Unfortunately, I do not have the module right now to do some test, so that I cannot get the iteration time (“CAN Low Speed Loop” and “CAN High Speed Loop” show in the picture below), could you please tell how to calculate the iteration time needed for each loop depending on the above information.

The way that you have proposed to use the CAN module to monitor the BUS is a bad idea.  We have a prebuilt driver that will do most of this work for you.  You will need to download and install the NI-CAN 2.7.3 and then you will be able to use the example finder.  In the example finder look for.
The example finder is accessed through the Help menu.

  • Verizon DSL speed/latency lower than a month ago

A little over a month ago I upgraded to the faster Verizon DSL with "speeds up to 3mbps." I wasn't expecting 3mbps and was content with the speeds I was getting, which were pretty much twice as fast as what I had before. My Westell 7500 modem gateway reported a speed/latency of around 1780/768 kbps, up/down respectfully. Recently however my download speeds have dropped and the gateway page is showing 1501/445 kbps. I have run Verizon's troubleshoot and reset the modem a few times, but it still remains at 1501. I have tried to reach customer support, but they either just ignore my email, waste my times in chats until they escalate it and then ignore it, provide me with useless information like their security/antivirus suite, or just don't answer their phone. I want to know how I can get my speed back up to what it was a week ago. Would this be considered throttling? I have done every diagnostic at various times of day that I can on my end and it seems clear that this is the ISP capping my service to the bare minimum that my plan states. Shouldn't I expect the service I was receiving when I first signed on a month ago? Otherwise, isn't that a bait-and-switch tactic? I read somewhere here that they run some sort of "optimization" at DSLAM that might lower speeds for a stabler connection. I have not had any problems with the connection being dropped or anything of that manner and the speed it was running had no hiccups. Is there a way I can get that optimization removed?

Since we haven't heard back from you or have received a form submission as requested in your private support case, it appears assistance is no longer required. If you need any future help with your  Verizon service, please make a post here on the forums so we can assist.

skoczo wrote:What services could i disable?
anything you don't need at startup.
If you disable systemd service from startup, you will lose some kind of functionality, and you should try to figure out yourself whether you need that functionality of not.
If you use pulseaudio (I assume you do, since it looks like you're using gnome), you can safely disable alsa-restore.service and alsa-store.service, as pulseaudio will restore audio levels by itself.
I've masked systemd-vconsole-setup.service myself (disabling isn't enought), since I rarely use virtual console on ttys. I don't have correct keymap on ttys but that's not a big deal for me.
I don't think you need all those @backlight services either. I've personally masked all but one on my system.
e4rat will most likely reduce your start up time greatly, although it's a bit of a hassle to set up.
systemd-readahead might also help, but you should test it for yourself.
I'm also thinking you could probably optimize your initramfs a bit, as 11s is quite long for loading kernel. At least make sure you have 'autodetect' hook enabled in mkinitcpio.conf.
Also you can use lz4hc for compressing initramfs (COMPRESSION="lz4" and COMPRESSION_OPTIONS="-9" in mkinitcpio.conf), which should be faster on decompression than other algorithms.
There are some more tips in arch wiki, if you didn't check it out already

  • Kernel_task high cpu usage, high fan speed, and low cpu tempterature

    Hi,
I've noticed that a lot of people have been having trouble with the kernel_task process, but I couldn't quite find a situation similar to mine (most seem temperature related).
Here is the situation (15' MBP, mid-2010):
    - on boot (while the apple logo is shown), the fans speed suddenly jumps, and stays there, even if the computer has been off for a while.
    - boot takes a little over a minute, which is considerably slower than what I was used to before today
    - when finally started-up, the activity monitors shows kernel_task using between 160-180% of the CPU!
    - temperatures are shown to be around 30C, except for the mem controller at 40C (still very low temp), but the fan speed is arround 6000rpm for both fans.
    - this happened out of nowhere, as I woke the mpb from sleep this morning.
    Since then I've tried:
    - multiple reboots
    - install all updates
    - uninstall flash player (some people where having trouble with that)
    - empty the system cache with Onyx (reported as a cause of slow boot)
    - reset PRAM
    - reset SMC
    - put some ice packs under the mpb to cool things even further!
And so far, nothing has worked! I've had this laptop for 1 year, and nothing had ever failed. I upgraded to lion a few weeks ago, and everything had been working fine since the upgrade. This really happened out of nowhere, and none of the many forums I have read could offer a solution, and cals to apple support do not seem to yield better results (though I scheduled a call with them at 9am this morning, we'll see).
Has anyone had a similar set of problems?
I appreciate any help or advice you may have!
    Thanks!
    -Sebastien

I have the same issue (2.66 2010 MBP Hi-Res Anti Glare.)
I took it to Apple Store Covent Garden, JUST within warranty.
18 days later my machine has a new Main Logic borad, heat sensors, top case, palm rest. etc.
    I turned it on.
The fans kicked in. All processors at 50%, big ole kernal task.
I took it back, geniuses rest SMC and tested it under load and it was fine.
weirdly it failed diagnostics at first but then seemed fine
I came home. Fans kicked in...
I took it back. Diagnostics failed heat sensors again
Replaced logic board and heats sensors again, but more carefully this time just in case, tested again.
I took it home. FANS FANS FANS.
Last time I was in the store I was told my machine was fine and had been thoroughly tested.
    In mac store, no fans.
I erased hard drive and clean installed Lion
    FANS
I replaced hard drive with OCZ SSD, clean LION.
    Fans
    Software update
    SMC
    PRAM
    permissions
    Onyx complete clean/maintenace
    FANS/CPU
switched back to Snow Leopard SSD
    PRAM SMC ONYX etc.
    FANS/CPU
    replaced RAM, memtest-ed. fine, FANS
gonna try again but up to nearly 2 months of all my spare time trying to shut this thing up so I can sell it.

  • Estimated FTTC speed very low

    Hi
I am currently waiting for our newly installed cabinet to be enabled for infinity.  We are 300m from cabinet and cable path is straight down road.  BT wholesale checker give an estimate of 3.3mb for fttc speed.  I am thinking this cannot possibly be correct? We currently get about 2mb adsl and we are about 5km from exchange.
Checker on BT retail site does not give estimated speed. Is this because wholesale estimate is so low?
    Thanks
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

take the estiamtor wiht a pinch of salt untill your fttc is actualy enabled it wont give accurate info, if its already enabled and the information propagated to the line estimator then it could be down to a lot of different things, including but not limited ot the type of metal used in the line, known High Resistence joints etc etc. if the retail checker isnt giving and estimate then chances are its still awaiting activation and is just giving out the adslmax rateing for your area.

  • Download speeds very low =ftp tests

Hey ,, i ran into a issue here,
few servers are connected directly to 6509 to gig ports with a speeds of 1000 full on either side and they are having a slow download speeds of 11 Mbps
if i try to download an ftp from any of these servers ,,,download speeds are at 11Mbps.
in the same switch speed is good between two servers and rest of the servers operate at low sppeds.
If i try to involve another server connected to another switch,,, it is 28Mbps.
can any one help me out figure out the issue.
I am not able to figure out the issue
    Thnx

ok. if L1 is clear, try tcpdump on server and client side. maybe there are some errors in tcp communication, or something like this.

  • Speed getting lower every day since adsl2+ upgrade

Background : My router has always from day 1 been switched off at 11pm at night and turned back on at 7am in the morning. With adsl max I consistently had a download speed of 850Kb/s
2 weeks ago my line was upgraded after a phone call to BT, initially everything was great, speeds were not much better for the first coupld of days (950Kb/s) but then shot up to 1250Kb/s for a few days. Since then however my line has been getting slower every day. Today is the worst and I am now getting 690Kb/s.
I know I'm going to get the usual "leave router connected for 3 day" answer of someone, but what does this achieve ? If my line says connected at 6.5Mbps and I leave it on for 3 days solid does that mean 3 days of being stuck at that speed or does the line recalculate connection speed at certain intervals ?

Thats my line stats as it stands , down from 11Mbps connection a week ago . Cannot connect to the main socket as where the line comes in the house is just a blank faceplate with a cable coming out the bottom into a smaller box then out and accross the room to the only phone socket in the property.
At this rate I would have been better staying on my old package instead of being made to take out a new contract at less favourable terms.

Nothing but a phone connected to the line. The sky box has never been connected to the line as last year when we got a Sky HD box slowed the connection right down.
As for the router being on for the 10 days, no one ever said that to me. The only reason I know that turning it off daily could be a negative was through this forum.
As for my original question. If I now leave the router on permanately does it reconfigure the connection istelf or does it have to be reset every now and then. Very frustrating going from 850Kb/s on adslmax to 1200+ then down to sub 700.
I am unable to run a speed test at the moment , but with only the homehub connected to the master socket the results look like much the same , The hub seems to be connecting at bang on 6.5Mbs every time so I assume the line has been set to this by the DLM ? How long on ADSL 2 does it take to work its way back up ? I ran a speed test earlier today and I belive my IP profile was 5.85 or some such , why would it be set so low when the line was happy at 10+ last week ?

    Hi,
I did a speedtest on the 1st and it showed I was getting 16mb DL speed however in the past couple of days I have only been recieving 3-4mb sometimes even slower.
I checked my status through ADSL settings and was wondering if the noise on the line is the problem:

    HI welcome to the forum
Yes your noise is the problem that has risen because of disconnections
can you please try the quiet line test at the test socket located inside the master socket dial 17070 select option 2 you should hear no noise if you do then you need to phone bt faults on 151 and report a noisy line but do not mention broadband when you call increases in noise margin can also be caused by manually restarting the hub have you been doing that in the hopes of increasing speed if so please stop as restarts of the hub are the worse thing you can do this link may also help the post by RogerB gives lots of suggestions to try as well http://community.bt.com/t5/BB-in-Home/Poor-Broadband-speed/m-p/14217#M8397

  • BT Infinity - speed much lower than expected

    Morning all,
I will be raising a call with BT this morning but thought I would post here too.  Eventually got BT infinity installed on the 16th of March after BT messed up the order - I am less than 90 metres to the cabinet.
My speed fluctuates between 17MB and 36MB - I was told by BT that I should expect at least 70MB - I have checked speeds in the AM, mid afternoon, evening and night and have done so for the last week - numerous speed test sites used : speedtest.net / the BT speed test and others provided by other ISPs - all show the same speeds or thereabouts.
Have to say, not massively impressed with Infinity or the service provided by BT.

    Hi Guys,
See below and these are the highest speeds I have had yet..

  • Wifi speeds very low

I feel that BT are leading a misleading campaign on "The best wifi speeds" on TV. I have just moved over from Talktalk where my speeds were great and the wifi was quick. BT wifi speeds come no where near the speeds I was getting before. If I'm cabled my line speeds are ok at 73mb BUT, wifi goes down to 2.8 down & .6 up. I have split the channels to see if this works and still no good. Speaking to the help desk was a waist of time as they only want me to factory reset my hh5 that is only 4 weeks old. I have been working as an IT employee for the last 10 years and in my experience this causes more issues than it resolves.
Please, has anyone got the same issue with the wifi speeds on the HH5 as this is killing me. If you advertise FASTEST WIFI SPEEDS then deliver these speeds or I will look at my contract and leave.

You really need to use wireless-AC to get the best speeds.

What is going on with my BT Broadband speed...?
Download 0.25 Mbs and up load of 0.09 mbs..
    This just can't be right...?

I moved you post to start a new thread as previous one was marked as solved by originator
welcome to the BT community forum where customers help customers and only BT employees are the forum mods
in order for the forum members to help please can you post the adsl stats from your router may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or use a-z, if netgear enter 192.168.0.1) and run  btspeedtester  (MAC users may have problems). when first test completes then run diagnostic test and post the results .
are you connected directly via a filter to the NTE5 master or test socket or to somewhere else? Is the master the only phone socket in your home?
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal
Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem

  • FTTC Anticipated Speed - Slightly low?

    First post here
Alright, my exchange is due for fibre March 2012, and so is my cabinet (both have exactly the same date - Some fibre cabinets have popped up along the area, but I dont think their switched on, theres no noise coming from them).
When I go onto the BT ADSL checker, it goes I can get a speed of 26.1mbps down and 10.0mbps up, even though im like 60 seconds away from my cabinet down the road.
What kind of speed can I expect? I currentley get a rubbish 3.5meg speed, and im hoping fibres going to be epically awesome for me.
Another thing, if a person can get FTTC now, will there be plans to lay fibre down the roads so its FTTP capable? (If there are main trunking ducts down the road ofcourse)
    Cheers in advance guys.

the checker speed are estimates until the cabinet goes live it also depends on how the copper pair are routed from the cab to your home it may be a longer route than walking distance i would think you are likely to get more than that most do as to FTTP that will be unknown as it is only available in a few parts of the uk at this time and fibre to home comes with other things that have to be changed as well on the voice side when using FTTP
