W520 vs T61p Hard drive

Hi, I am soon to have a brand new W520 and I am wondering if my secondary hard drive bay and hard drive will be compatible from my T61.
I try to find info on this online, but don't seem to clearly get any.
Thanks for the help

Hi Bee73
I am not sure about the ultrabay as I do not own one. However, there are more information at this thread, stating it does not work very well due to 3mm gap making it loose with Ultrabay Adapter III. Some of the people recommend using 3rd party HDD Caddy for W510 / W520.

Your T61 hard drive should be able to work as long as it is a SATA HDD.
Cheers

  • T61p Hard drive problem- Can't open Disk D:

Hi, about three days ago, my laptop, T61p, it happened blue scrren error, and yesterday, it happened that I can't open the Disk D:, when I tried to open it, it said parameter uncorrect or asked me to format the disk.
Cause there are some useful files in the disk, I don't want to do that. And because I haven't backed up the system for several months, I don't know how to resuce the files in it.
Actually, this problem had happened last months, but when I restart the computer, the diskcheck runs automatically, and after that, the disk D: can be opened. But this time, the system just check the disk C:, and I can't run the "diskcheck" for Disk D:, when I insert this order in "cmd", it said the disk is raw, and can't proceed.
    Can anyone help?
    Many thanks!

If you get a response that the disk is "raw", you can try the following: go into diskmgmt.msc (type it in run-dialog), and try setting a different drive-letter on the D-drive. See if that helps (reported "raw" disks in Vista/Windows 7 sometimes are just failure to recognize the disk properly, and a new drive-letter "activates" it again).

  • W520 sleep(hard drive) issues.

    Hi,
I'm having some issues with my W520. Almost every time I put it to sleep and transport it it stucks on waking up and I must forcefully shut it down. If I sleep it and let it stationary on the desk there is no problem no matter whether it's with or without the AC power plugged in. I have the latest versions of all the drivers, BIOS and windows updates.  The OS is Windows 7 Enterprise. I thought that it could be because of the instant resume and stay online settings, but after switching them off nothing changed.
I read similar topics for W510, there seems to be no solution, but I'm issuing this topic as I have one additional question. While the notebook is in sleep mode I still can hear noise from it and I believe that it's coming from the hard drive, that seems to be rotating, which is very odd for me. I've tried various timer settings for shutting down the hard drive, but there is no change. And if it is the hard drive rotating probably this can cause some problems in combination with the hard drive protection while transporting it. Do you think that it is normal the hard drive to rotate in sleep mode, because for me it seems very strange?

I have noticed sleep mode sucks a lot of battery - If you leave it asleep on battery for 24h, the battery is down about 40%.  Also, the 9cell battery wobbles about alarmingly - all things which dont help using it with sleep.  I always shut mine down before moving, as Im paranoid about it coming out of sleep while on the move and dying.  Note: when you put it to sleep, you should wait some time before its fully asleep before moving it - you dont want it to still be writing stuff to disk.

  • T61P - Very sluggish performance..hard drive issue ?

    Hi,
So I have been the owner of a T61P 6460 for one year now. It came with Vista, I downgraded to XP, and the thinkpad has always been running very strong and never had any sort of problem with it.
One month ago, I had a problem with the keyboard, the on/off switch did not respond anymore. So I had to send it back for repair. Before, sending it back, Iremoved the hard drive and tried to pick up some important data with a SATA adapter, but it somehow failed. So I sent it back to Lenovo for repair. They replaced the keyboard and even the palmrest free of charge which was quite nice. But when I received my thinkpad, it was running like hell. It took life 2 hours to boot the first time and it wouldn't even boot every time. The hard drive light was always on. So I tried formatting the hard drive. I lost alot of important stuff, but I take the blame for not backing up my system often enough.
So with a fresh XP, I started from scratch. Installed important programs and stuff. It was running pretty well. I could actually see a small difference as to when I first got my system but it was OK. Now, after maybe 3 days of daily normal use, my system started slowing down again.
I am not really pleased with my system anymore. Could the hard drive really be the source of my headaches ? I ran PC doctor and the hard drive failed 2 tests (I cannot remember which one it was, random search and the last one I believe). Would lenovo, declare my hard drive faulty of the performance loss? would they replace my hard drive free of charge ? I really do not accept that my system I paid 2300 $ one year ago runs slowly than a 1000 $ dell inspiron ...
    Any info will be appreciated
    thanks

    George,
IBM's Power Manager works with Vista's ACPI to control the CPU power settings.  Why don't you try it out.  Go to the Power Manager, select any power plan, and reset the defaults.  You will now be able to adjust the maximum CPU speed.  Try and set the CPU speed to the 'lowest' setting, and run a few apps.  You will definitely notice the performance hit.
So, even though you can set the CPU power settings in BIOS, the OS will overide the settings.

  • T61p- Problem with Hard Drive

    Hi guys,
I have recently purchased a Thinkpad (T61p) WinXP Pro with 160 GB hard drive capacity. I have so far used only 12 GB of the space; however, I have noticed that on the system (when you click on DriveC --> Properties) shows 80GB of used space. What could possibly account for the remaining 68GB? I haven't partitioned the disk. Any suggestions? Thanks!

    Hello ya11osmah,
please look at thisthread or simply use searchfunktion and insert:  hard drive space.
Vista and R&R are making backups that are using all your drive capacity.
    Kind regards

  • T61P Ultra Slim bay hard drive issues

    Hi,
I have a new T61P with an additional hard drive in the Ultra Slim bay.
I can safely pull out the old drive or DVD, plug is the another drive - nothing happens!!  I thought this hard drive is suppose to be Plug-N-Play.
Is there any settings / configurations I need to do?  What is the best setting to format that drive?
    Thanks,
    Dave

Use "safely remove devices" or Easy Eject before removing an ultrabay device.
Give windows a few seconds to complete the dismount before inserting the new device
A new hdd will need to be formatted - use Disk Management (right click My Computer - select Manage)
If a HDD was already in a machine and had a HDD password set it will not be detected if you swap it in hot.  You have to cold boot and enter the password when prompted.  If you remove the HDD password using BIOS setup then it will function when hot-swapped.

  • T61P and Advanced Dock, not recognizing removable hard drive

    Folks,
I am hoping to get some help with my T61p and Advanced Dock.  The Ultra Bay in the advanced dock is not recognizing hard drives that are recognized although they do spin up.  The light comes on and I can hear the drive spinning.  The same ultrabay carrier works with the same hard drive when inserted into the T61p.  If I insert a DVD/CD drive into the advanced dock, it does appear and I can see it to eject it.  These drives were working in the advanced dock several months ago and no longer work.  Is there a set of drivers for the advanced dock or somewhere I can check to see what is there?  Any help or ideas are appreciated.
    Thanks,
    warren

So it looks like you do not have a hardware problem, since SeaTools sees the drive. Probably the 1.5 Gb/s jumper is not needed, though it's interesting to know that it might be if the drive is installed in the UltraBay (thanks globalkiwi!).
It seems to me that there must be a problem with the drive imaging/cloning. Another member is having a similar problem with their R400 and True Image. In that thread, ortegaluis suggested repeating the cloning process with your new drive installed on the internal SATA and the old drive connected via USB. Or is that how you did it the first time?
It might also help to download a trial of the latest True Image and give that a try... maybe Acronis has fixed some problems with SATA drives?
Please post back with your progress (and hopefully success). Good luck!

  • T61p does boot up gives 3 beeps but will boot up if I take out and put back in the hard drive.

Five days ago my T61p did not boot up and gave three beeps, (one long and two short?). I searched for this online and read that it could mean either the memory and or the motherboard was bad.  The laptop is out of waranty
    1. I took out the hard drive to see if I could savage it and my desktop was able to access it and it passed a virus check.
    2. Today, I reinstalled the hard drive to take the computer to the shop and it booted normally.
    3. I rebooted it and ran Lenova's system diagnostic tests. Everything passed except for the CDR\DVR\CD burner.
    4. After I finished the tests, it did not boot up and gave the three beeps again.
    5. I took out the hard drive and after about a half hour reinstalled it and it booted up normally. I am writing this thread using the laptop.
Does anyone have any idea WTH is going on and possible solutions to fix it? After it did not boot up last Thursday, I started shopping for another laptop. It would be great to keep this one if I can.

T61p > nVidia GPU > check the condition of the most likely culprit first.
Furmark and Freestone are your friends, but they might be your motherboard's executioner as well.
Proceed with caution and good luck.

  • T61p will not boot (no fan, hard drive or drisplay response) after accidental drop

    Hi there,
I'm hoping that someone much more knowledgeable than me can help me with my problem.  The other day, my laptop tumbled out of my trunk and onto the floor.  The following morning, I tried booting the laptop and nothing happened.  No hard drive spinning, no fan and no display.
When on ac power, the plug icon is lit.  When I press the power button, nothing happens, although the power icon remains lit.  When on battery and battery + ac power the same situations occur.  The battery and/or plug icon remain lit while I press the power button, and nothing happens.
I have tried reseating the memory and the hard drive, but the situation remains the same.
I'm really hoping that this won't involve a motherboard replacement, as I'm out of warranty.  If it does lead up to a motherboard replacement, can anyone give me a ballpark on how much parts and labor would cost?  Maybe it's better to just buy a new machine.
Thanks in advance for any help! =)

this is a hard diagnose to make.
If you had the mini dock or something, you could try to use the external switch to power up the laptop. If that doesn't work then there is probably some major hardware fault.
Have you tried to reseat the CPU on the laptop?
The cost of repair would be prohibitive as the repairer has to work his way through to find the fault. The second hand motherboard on ebay are not 100% in terms of quality, as they may contain faulty GPU.
The cost of the motherboard from IBM parts would be 500 dollars plus.

  • W520 Replace DVD with another Hard Drive and IEEE 1394 spec for music recording

To increase the performance, I am taking the 160 GB SSD instead of the mechanical drive. Obviouslt, I need more space than this. I don't care about the DVD rom. It can't play blu ray anyway. Is it possible to replace the dvd drive with a hard drive? Where can I get a replaceable drive for this? What do I do with the DVD? Can I sell it back?
I need to do music recording with this. I was wondering about the IEEE 1394 spec; the latency etc. If I remember correctly the W510 IEEE1394 was very good, probably was manufactured by Texas Instruments. I could not find anything about it anywhere. Not even here: http://www.lenovo.com/psref/pdf/tabook.pdf
Also, a bit worried about the sound card. How good is it? Did anyone use this laptop for music recording?

    hey udvranto,
with regard to this, i would suggest contacting tech support via the number listed in the link below to check if it is possible to replace the dvd with your harddrive.
    http://www.lenovo.com/contact/us/en/
on the part of the soundcard, I believe it is good for music recording. Though this really depends on the software that you're going to use to record.

  • How can I add an additional hard drive to my W520?

I have a Yoga 2 tablet - 1050L. A few days ago, it upgraded to Lollipop version 5.0.1. Hortly thereater, I noticed that it had also erased my APN for my local cellular service (I'm currently working in Bolivia, have Tigo as my carrier - LTE service.) Everything was fine with KitKat, but now, I can't re-configure my APN. Wifi works fine (unlike some comments I've seen in other discussions), Lollipop has done several small upgrades since installing, but still, I can't use the tablet at this time unless I'm on Wifi..... HELP!!

Can I add an aditional hard drive to my time capsule if the time capsule is near capacity?
    Yes
If the Time Capsule is near capacity, will it stop backing up?
No, Time Machine will automatically start to delete the oldest backups to make room for new backups.

  • W520, hard drive, lots of bad blocks

    Hello Everyone,
I've noticed that my hdd become very slow. I checked SMART status and it seems there are a lot of bad blocks:
    "197 Current_Pending_Sector  0x0012   095   095   000    Old_age Always       -       0x5121000011d8"
4568 bad blocks, yesterday  I saw only 4550, so as you can see number is increasing.
Question: Could it be replaced by warranty?
    Thanks, Artem.

If the hard drive came with the system and you are within your warranty period, then yes. It can be replaced under warranty.

                        It is made by Hitachi.
    Thinkpad: T61 (8891-CTO)
OS: Windows XP Pro SP2 (newly purchased, shrink-wrapped)
This thinkpad had Vista Home on it. I bought the new hard drive for the purpose of loading a just-purchased copy of Windows XP Pro SP2 on it (. After installing the new hard drive:
    1. I turned on the machne and inserted the Windows XP CD.
    2. Files from the CD (drivers, etc.) started being loaded (into memory, I guess).
    3. Then got a prompt to select whether I'd like to install a new version of XP or restore an existing version.
    4. I selected Install a new version.
    5. Then I got a message saying Windows could not find a hard drive on my machine.
    6. Then I restarted, and interrupted the restart to look at the BIOS config settings
    7. I found the hard drive test function, and started the hard drive test.
    8. It took a while, but the hard drive test was successful. So hard drive is OK, and the BIOS is aware of it.
How can I make Windows XP aware of my new hard drive?
