W520 Wifi-card replacement issue
I ordered my W520 with the ThinkPad wireless card featuring the Realtek 8188CE chipset. After going through a few Linux installs and realizing that this card had terrible Linux support, I decided to upgrade on my own to the Intel 6200, believing this was the upgraded chip. Upon starting my computer with that card installed, it went through the BIOS, then failed to boot due to an incompatible wireless card. Realizing I made a mistake I returned that card and switched back to the Realtek. Recently I've been wanting to go back to Linux, so I decided to try and upgrade again, but made sure to get the Intel Centrion Advanced-N 6205 card, or the upgrade option from Lenovo that is shown. This still does not work for me unfortuantely and it's really bugging me. Does anyone have any tips/tricks/ideas/solutions?
Where can Lenovo branded cards be found? I've tried using the IBM site for replacement parts, and the part number is never found (I've tried 60Y3247, the Realtek, and 60Y3252, what the Intel is supposed to be if my research is correct) and they're not listed on the Lenovo site.

Ralink RT3290 802.11bgn Wifi Card - Possible Issues [SOLVED]
Dear Lucky owners of such a card, At least from my experience I realized it is not that bad card, even if most probably many production pieces were faulty or not working properly, and many issues can be resolved. Let me list in order of time the issues I faced and solved about this wifi card: 0) First issue is not about RT3290 card itself but it is related to 802.11w encryption compatibility in between Windows8 and Cisco not allowing 802.11n speed rates so failing to G speeds only. - SOLUTIONS: a. As first test I would recommend trying another router from different brand to see if connecting at 802.11n speed rates b. If you prove point a issue, then try to fix the issue based on following post (in which you can see the reply from myself Emanuele on the 29th of Nov 2014): https://supportforums.cisco.com/document/113836/windows-8-clients-cant-associate-cisco-unified-wireless 1) Signal strenght issue: original wifi card RT3290 installed on my HP laptop was having really bad antenna, with signal fluctuating and sometimes bad even really close to any Router I tried. - SOLUTION: Replace the RT3290 card even with same new card. (In my case as laptop was under warranty, I proved the issue via screenshots and they replaced with new card solving my signal strenght issue). 2) Original issue (1) was actually resolved after HP replaced the wifi card with same model, but with the latest driver installed 5.0.45 seems like wifi rates change too frequently based on high sensitivity of the driver itself, so that suggested me issue was still there, so making me re-testing anything from scratch. - SOLUTION: Install 5.0.37 Driver - frequent rate changes issue (with driver 5.0.45) disappears and sensitivity of signal to rate changes seems to be a really good compromise to have good throughput. 3) To check out 2nd issue above I started again using a third party software inSSIDer free version to check signal while I was doing speedtest on web.
- RESOLUTION:
inSSIDer normally works on Windows7 without any issue but on Windows8 (at least tested with RT3290) I have just discovered somehow this software was slowing down wifi card performance drastically showing a speed up to 0.1Mbps rather than 40Mbps. Simply closing the application issue was not recurring, so uninstalled it and after solving all the other issues above this card works perfectly (at least so far ) Hope this post will be informative and will help other about-to-get-mad guys as meHye. After I read up your solutions, I am quite impressive and really want to try out those solutions. However, I am not very computer wise and I really appreciate if you make a video on solving this problem. Up to you if you want to upload it on the youtube (so that others with similar problem can view it and solve the problem too) or you want to direct email to me ( [email protected] ). I really hope you can help me because I am stuck with this problem since last year. Thank you!!!

Wifi card replacement 500-017c
my pc is getting poor reception from the router, should I replace the wifi card and if so with what model
Hi gdkurth, the wifi reception not allways depends on the computer wifi card(the receiver) it also can depend on the router that transmit the wifi signal, what is your wifi router model and what distance it is from the pc?

Hi, I want to replace my wifi card which intel centrino 2230, can any one tell me which wifi card other then intel is compatable with my laptop. thanks
Changing the wifi card would change the MAC ID of the PC as well and that is why it would not be recomended.
However, you can add a wifi card that is of the miniPCI spec.
you can visit http://partsurfer.hp.com/search.aspx and check if there are any cards compatible with you PC listed.
Just add the product number of your PC in the search box.
Changing the card on the PC would also void your warranty in case of a failure caused by the new card.
The easiest thing to do will be to just buy a USB wifi stick, these are very cheap and usually dont require drivers.

5 GHz wifi card replacement for dv7-6c23cl (AMD A8)?
Laptop came with Broadcom 4313GN 802.11b/g/n 1x1 Wi-Fi Adapter. It has Broadcom 20702 bluetooth adapter. Not sure if its build in to the wifi card. I'd like a dual band better card. I have WNDR3000 Netgear dual band router. This adapter connects only at 65Mbps max. with 2.4n. Any successful upgrades? Please help.
This question was solved.

You can look at the service manual at the link below and in chapter 3 you will find an illustrated parts list with all components you can purchase with the HP part numbers.
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03099448.pdf
Then to buy a part, you can enter the part # in the site below in the applicable box.
http://h20141.www2.hp.com/Hpparts/Default.aspx?mscssid=29A6F8A626224D4583A5DD74EF3A2FAF
When you see the wireless cards available, the dual band card you see is only for notebooks with Intel processors--and it doesn't matter, as the part number for that card is incorrect and nobody knows what the right one is.
Changing a wireless card in an HP consumer notebook is nothing short of a nighmare due to the BIOS lock out of any cards not listed in the service manual for the specific model notebook.

I had an Intel 4965agn in my T61 (type 7695), but when I upgraded from windows 8 to 8.1, I started getting the BSOD frequently. I checked out this thread and found out that 8.1 no longer supported that wifi card, so I bought a replacement. I installed the Atheros AR5BXB112 that is suggested in the thread, let windows autoinstall the driver, and now I'm having problems with it.
My router has a 2.4/5 gHz dual radio and I have it set up so that the 5gHz band is pure n, and so I always hook up my laptop to that one. Initially with the new card, I could see both ssids and connect to either without issues. I would be browsing the internet and then the internet would stop working - maybe 5-10 minutes.. Nothing associated with the network controls would work (i.e. couldn't click on the bars in my system tray to show available networks, couldn't open network and sharing center), and then I would get a pop up that the windows process had stopped working and would ask if I wanted to restart it. Then the computer would freeze and I'd have to restart the entire computer. I updated the driver to a driver from the Atheros webpage (10.0.0.298) and then THIS problem went away. Now that I could use the internet for some time, I found ANOTHER issue.
When I woke my computer up from sleep, it started having issues. I could no longer see the ssid for the 5gHz band at all. I could still see the 2.4gHz ssid and connect without issues.
To get the 5gHz back, I would have to uninstall the card from device manager and restart the computer. I tried to restart the computer, disable/enable the card, uninstall/reinstall without restarting - nothing else worked.
It doesn't go away after every time the computer sleeps, but most times. I uninstalled the card and put the 4965agn back in for now because the BSODs are less frequent that this glitch. Any thoughts?

Go to Solution.Hello,
Did you try disabling power management for the card in the Device Manager Properties pane for it? If so, did that make any difference?

Is it possible to replace the wifi card with another one?
Hi
I have a t400 with intel 5100 wifi card and now I want to install mac os on my laptop.
problem is that mac os does not detect the 5100 series of wifi card and I want to know whether it is possible to replace the current 5100 model with a older series?
Is there any certified service center in Uppsala/ Sweden to do that?
Thanks,
Solved!
Go to Solution.Lenovo restricts the wireless cards to Lenovo branded units certified to work with the machine. This is done through a whitelist in the system BIOS. I recently disassembled the latest (version 3.14-1.06) T500/W500 BIOS and found the following whitelist table. This is raw big endian hex appended with what I found by searching the device ID's. Redundant entries are for varying vendor IDs.
86803B428680111000 Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 5350 AGN [Echo Peak] Network Connection
86803D428680111200 Intel Corporation WiMAX/WiFi Link 5150

868037428680161200 Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 5100 AGN [Shiloh] Network Connection

EC107281EC1020E000 Realtek RTL8191SEvB (Yuck, Realtek! I'd hate to have one of these...)
86803D428680161200 8086:423D Intel Corporation WiMAX/WiFi Link 5150
8680840086801513 Intel Corporation Centrino Wireless-N 1000
Your T400 is from the same lineup and probably has the same list. Remember, you'll need to purchase a Lenovo branded unit.
Also look for a PM with additional information. -
I have a hp pavilion dv7 home premium, win 7premium, intel core i7 processor. Would like to replace the wifi card; currently intel 1000, to intel 6250. The bios does not recognize the 6250. My bios ver is F.1c insyde. Is there an update that will allow me to use the 6250 wifi card?
Thanks for any helpWe need the full model number but likely not. If the laptop is more than about a year old there is a BIOS whitelist that will prevent unapproved wifi cards from being used. Need the exact model number to know what is listed for it.

Replacing the Realtek wifi card with an Intel one
Hey everyone,
I am trying to replace the poor performing realtek wifi module with an Intel Centrino one on my T420.
I purchased an "Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205" which is one of the chips the T420 comes with.
Apparently my chip is not whitelisted, as I could not boot with it plugged in.
Lenovo support was unable to tell me where to get a Lenovo branded chip.
Can anyone help me out?
Thanks in advance!
Solved!
Go to Solution.Hello and welcome,
As you've discovered, wifi cards have to be the correct model (Intel xyz) and have a Lenovo FRU number.
I can't link to the T420 Hardware Maintenance Manual at the moment - support is undergoing maintenance
Here are the Intel models and FRUs from my local T420 HMM:
Wireless-N 1000 60Y3241
Advanced-N 6205 (2x2 AGN) 60Y3253
Ultimate-N 6300 60Y3233
Advanced-N + WiMAX 6250, WW SKU 60Y3195
Advanced-N + WiMAX 6250, Russia SKU 60Y3209
Hopefully that helps your search.

Issues with broadcom 4313 wifi card on a samsung NP305
Hi
I'm currently having issues with getting the wifi to work on my broadcom 4313 wifi card on a Samsung NP305U1A. The command
lspci -vnn | grep 14e4
returns 14e4:4727, so according to the wiki, I chose the "brcmsmac" driver. I blacklisted correctly b43, bcma in the /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf file, rebuilded the mkinitpcio image, so when I type lsmod now, the only wifi modules loaded in my kernel are :
brcmsmac 569864 0
mac80211 221981 1 brcmsmac
brcmutil 6912 1 brcmsmac
cfg80211 165796 2 brcmsmac, mac80211
I still don't see the wlan0 appearing when I type ifconfig though.
Would you have any advices?
Thank you very much,
Tuxer
Last edited by Tuxer (2012-01-13 14:31:36)Hi everybody!
I've found a solution for this problem (at LinLap, see pierre comment on Feb-24-2012) and it worked for my Linux Mint installation. On " /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf" I didn't have the "blacklist b43" line, it was only on a previous comment line, but I commented the next line (it was similar) and added the same blacklist at end of file.
Uninstall the 'Broadcom Sta' driver
Open the file /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
Delete the line:
blacklist b43
Add these two lines at the end of the file:
blacklist bcma
blacklist brcmsmac
Save and exit
Type:
sudo apt-get remove –purge bcmwl-kernel-source
Reboot
Type:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source
Reboot
Select the 'Broadcom Sta' driver
Best regards and I hope this works for you too -
Can I replace stock wifi card with an Intel 6235 Wifi/Bluetooth PCI-e card in my N580?
I have a PCI-e WiFi/BT combo card that worked in my HP laptop, but when I put it in the N580, It would not boot and said the wifi card was not authorized and I would have to remove it and replace with an authorized card. There are SO many different card available, I just want to find the correct one that will fit in the BIOS Whitelist.
I'm looking for a Dual Band wifi with Bluetooth 4.0 preferred. Something like this. Would this one on eBay work or is there another card I would need.
Thanks!

Go to Solution.Hello and welcome,
Whatever card you use, it MUST have a Lenovo FRU number. Cards that will pass the BIOS whitelist have been modified to provide a specific subsystem ID to BIOS. Reputable sellers will list the Lenovo FRU if their card is compatible.
For example, a generic Intel 6150NX will not pass the whitelist, but a 6150NX with a 20002543 FRU number will pass.
Here's the list from the N580 Hardware Maintenance Manual:
IdeaPad P580, P585, N580, N581, N585, N586 Hardware Maintanence Manual (First Edition)
WLAN, WiFi 1x2 BGN + WiMAX, Intel 2200N MOW M PCIE NB HMC (P580/N580/N581)

Intel 6150NX BSB M PCIE NB HMC (LI) (P580/P585/N580/ N581/N586)

20002501
WLAN, WiFi 1x1 BGN+BT3.0, Liteon WB195 BGN+BT HMC

Probably not what you wanted to hear, but that's the reality of the situation.

What replacement wifi card do i need for iMac 21.5-inch EMC 2308 late 2009 model
Need to replace wifi card. For the life of me, I can't find the exact model # of wifi card I will need. Only that I need "AirPort Extreme (802.11g/n)," but when I search for that, I get all sorts of different shaped and sized cards that meet those specs.
I would try giving them a call at their support number. They may be able to help both identify the correct part and know where you can get a replacement. In addition, you may also want to consider getting a wireless USB adapter. You would use this instead of the internal card. There are a number of vendors providing these as well.
