W530 and Ivy Bridge refresh processors?

Does anyone know when Lenovo will start shipping with the new Ivy Bridge processors that were released in Sept. '12? I'm planning to get a new W530 and was about to buy one with the i7-3920XM but for roughly the same price, I'd rather have the i7-3940XM.
Thanks for any replies!

On paper, the new processor should offer a 3 percent advantage over the Core i7-3920XM.

  • Mac Mini Server - Xeon Ivy Bridge

    Good morning.
I was wondering... is it feasible to equip the next Mini Server with an Ivy Bridge Xeon processor?
It could be one of these: http://ark.intel.com/compare/65733,65729,65726,65728
    Pros (including other ideas):
    - Capabilities to stack Mini's and assemble a processor cluster (like the first PS3 generation);
    - Real server configs;
    - Better computing precision;
    - Multiple display capabilities (Intel® HD Graphics P4000);
    Cons:
    - Heat?
Thanks in advance for your professional opinion!
    Best regards,

    Hello Koben,
I suspect only the bottom line 45W one would work in a Mini as far as heat goes.

  • P67A-GD65 (B3) Ivy Bridge CPU recognition

    Hi all,
I have had this mobo for about a year, and yet I havn't used it, but just recently, I purchased an Ivy Bridge 22nm processor to which to 'try-out' the mobo not knowing the BIOS version. [oops!]
Installing this particular processor, and connecting everything else to the mobo, will it POST despìte the fact that I am unaware of the BIOS version? - Will I able to 'get-into' the BIOS at least? - Any damage to the CPU and/or mobo if turned on and if BIOS version is not the appropiate one?
The thing is, I cannot test the board as I don't have a Sandy bridge CPU at this moment.
    In await of any reply,
    Thanks.

No POST or entering UEFI/BIOS without a supported CPU, sorry. There is almost no advantage to an Ivy CPU in a P67. Yeah, you get prettier BIOS screens, but how much time is spent in there? Recommend to put a Sandy 2700k in it and it will destroy what an Ivy can do performance wise.
I'm running a 2500K in this same motherboard. I had the intention to grab a E3-1290V2 from work when we reconfigure & update the systems there. But it seams your advising against that?

  • Discuss Quick Synch in Ivy Bridge Laptops?

For those who must use a portable edit solution, powerful laptops are a must for PPro. New reviews on the latest Ivy Bridge equipped laptops are indicating a possible huge leap forward in performance, due to the "Quick Synch" feature included within the integrated graphics onboard the CPU. Even with this feature disabled, the Ivy Bridge CPU seems to have a great performance encoding video.  See this link: http://http://hothardware.com/Reviews/Intel-Core-i73720QM-Ivy-Bridge-Mobile-Processor-Revi ew-/?page=4
I do not know if Adobe PPro is written to take advantage of this,or not.Can someone who knows please comment ?There is a mention of third party software that allows a discrete GPU to be used at the same time as the onboard 4000 Intel graphics, ( normally the integrated graphics would have to be disabled to use a discrete video card). The review shows the Intel 4000 graphics almost on par with a discrete CUDA card for some tasks, and blowing the CUDA card away in one video encoding task!! Could it be possible to combine a CUDA card with the onboard Quick Synch for killer performance of PPro or AEffects??!! The article states that many software companies are writing their programs to take advantage of "Quick Synch"....is Adobe one of them??
The Ivy Bridge tested in the review reaches 3.4 GHz on all 4 cores under load with the turbo feature. Combined with 1600 speed memory maxxed out and two internal Cherryville Intel high speed SSDs, I'm wondering how such a laptop would perform on the PPBM test!!!
As a laptop user, due to frequent travel, I would appreciate any thoughts by all you guys who know far,far more than me....Harm, RJL, Bill, et al.......
Am I right to be excited???.....or, will "Quick Synch" with Adobe become " Quick Stink"!!!
After posting this, I saw the following thread in the sidebar from a year ago : http://http://forums.adobe.com/message/3693326#3693326   This mentions an Intel plug-in to enable PPro to use Quick Synch , and AME as well. Also, Lucid Virtu software to allow access to the integrated graphics while the CUDA card is on.
Have there been any newer developments with this...esp. with laptops and the newer Ivy Bridge CPUs?
    Message was edited by: JFPhoton

I am not sure if the SDK plug-in option is still available for the Quicksync with Adobe and no idea if it works with CS6. This was something on Intel's site and that they developed or atleast listed with the walk through. Beyond that I have not checked in months.
Unless the Virtu software has been updated, it does not work with Cuda based applications for Cuda acceleration.

Hello i buy  a new macbook air white i5 ivy bridge processor and when i play a game the cpu themperature is 88-100c it is normal?

One thing I should add. While "normal", it doesn't make it preferrrable that you should be always running near the maximum capability of the unit. The new 2012 MBA's are outfitted with CPU's that have a maximum running temp of 115 degrees C. (the 2011's were rated at 100 degrees C.)
At, or near this point, the CPU will shut down the system to safeguard from overheating. Right under this point the system's fan will be running at top speed. Any mechanical device, run at or near it's capability will undergo accelerated wear. Just how much in this situation is unknown. as such, I don't use my MBA as a full-time gaming rig. I try and keep it sensible.
The MBA is not really designed for gaming, but it's competent performance sometimes lures us to use it as such.

Hello. hope I can get some opinions and facts in the above comparison.
I have a Haswell but I may have some permanent issues with it. The 11s in general doesn't seem widely available but Tiger Direct has an Ivy Bridge version list as a refurbished product.
Any ideas on what the differences are between these two editions?
Are the other specs the same? (full size HDMI, full size SD card etc?)
    Thanks!

As far as I know, everything is the same except for the Haswell processor. Which means you will probably get about an hour more battery life.

And I forgot, the Best Buy Haswell model comes with Windows 8.1, so no win 8 to 8.1 upgrade needed.

  • I7 3770K Ivy Bridge Vs. i7-3930K Sandy Bridge for Lightroom and Photoshop

Hello, I have learned so much from this forum and have a question for everyone. I am working on a custom computer build but I am not sure about the CPU. I was planning on an i7-3930K (3.2 GHz 12Mb Cache) Sandy Bridge with an ASUS P9X79 but after more research I am also considering an i7-3770K (3.5 GHz 8mb Cache) Ivy Bridge with an undetermined mobo. The 3930 has 6 cores and more cache but is a slower chip compared to the 3770K. I have read some articles that Lightroom prefers a faster chip and that the extra cores may not be of great benefit.
We primarily use Photoshop and Lightroom for image editing and do not do any video editing. We really do more work in Lightroom than Photoshop so designing the system for it would give us the most benefit. Our primary use of photoshop is batching if that helps with our usage of the system.
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Also feel free to tell me I am over analyzing this and either chip would work great
    Thanks in advance,
    Jonathan

    Jonathan,
For Lightroom and Photoshop the i7-3770K will do fine. It also is much more affordable than a i7-3930K on  2011 platform, but at the same time much more limited for the future, because of the limited PCI-e lanes on the 1155 platform. The Ivy Bridge has another distinct disadvantage, the Intel supplied thermal paste is lousy, so it runs very, very hot.
In another place, http://ppbm7.com/index.php/cooling?showall=&start=4 I said:
Warning: If you are considering a much better affordable system, based on the Ivy Bridge processor, be warned that the cooling paste Intel uses on the Ivy Bridge is no good, especially when overclocking. At stock speed the i7-3770K runs 11 degrees hotter than with Liquid Ultra cooling paste and at 4.6GHz even 20 degrees centigrade. However if you change the cooling paste, you also void the warranty.
To summarize: the 2011 platform has a better perspective for the future but at a price.

  • Just ordered iMac and shipped, but it will use Ivy bridge CPU???

I heard new CPU will be used for iMac, should I refund and order again? Or it has already installed???

No. It will have the old processor which is an Intel Core i% or I7 also known as a Sandy Bridge.
The Ivy Bridge has not been released you so you can't get it.
You can return it and wait for the Ivy Bridge that is your chose.

  • H8-1260t / IPISB-CH2 (Chicago) - Can HP add support for Ivy Bridge processors?

The latest UEFI BIOS upgrade for this Sandy Bridge H67-based motherboard is 7.12, dated 10/12/2011. The chipset has the capability to run Ivy Bridge CPUs (released Q4 2011) with a BIOS update to the microcode table (add the CPUID table entries for the 306xx CPUs to the 209xx Sandy Bridge CPUs already in the table, that's all!). I have checked the BIOS using AMI's MMtool, and BIOS ver 7.12 only supports Sandy Bridge CPUs. Can customers using the IPISB-CH2 motherboard, like me, get a BIOS update to support IvyBridge CPUs? -imsai8080 ref:http://www.asrock.com/news/events/2012ivy/ Please note that ASRock is the end-user sales department of Pegatron, which made the IPISB-CH2 motherboard for HP.H67DE3 looks very like the "Chicago" board. further ref:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGA_1155http://www.techpowerup.com/153756/ivy-bridge-quad-core-to-have-77w-tdp-intel-plans-for-lga1155-ivy-bridge-entry.html

I have examined the microcode and there is no support for it, though there is pleanty of room to add it. The BIOS itself is dated 10/12/2011. Simply download the update, change the file extension to .zip, look in the zip, and you'll see the actual mod date for CHG_712_Signed.rom file is 10/12/2011. All they did was update the sp56123.rtf file on 2/14/2012, and later moved it the newer Support format in 4/21/2013 (no files were changed internally). I don't know why they improperly dated it for 4/13. Hope that answers your question, although not the answer either of us wanted.Just to confirm, that's what I'm currently running on a h8-1260t, and 10/12/2011 is the date embedded in the BIOS as well.Big_Dave:Both of us understand that Pegatron is not a retail supplier, and requests for BIOS updates come from the customer, HP. The Ivy Bridge processors were released April 2012, 4 months after the intro of the Chicago board, and ASRock, the *retail* side of Pegatron, announced that all 2nd gen Sandy Bridge mobos (including the H67 motherboards) would have Ivy Bridge support added. IMHO, HP should have requested a BIOS upgrade for their 2nd gen Sandy Bridge Pegatron-based HP motherboards. Obviously, that didn't happen, since their only update is actually dated 10/2011 (see above). It doesn't seem unreasonable to me for HP to drop an request to Pegatron, a *current* motherboard supplier for HP, to cut an upgrade to support the HP motherboards derived fom the retail motherboards Pegatron already have upgraded circa 3 months after the release of the HP (Pegatron) "Chicago" motherboard, which looks AMAZINGLY like the ASRock (Pegatron retail) H67DE3 with the dual graphics support removed (standard for HP), SATA 4 & 5 moved to board edge, and HP proprietary frontpanel connector added in the original place for the H67DE3 SATA 4 & 5 <grin>. Probably a couple minutes with the right BIOS tools and updated microcode from Intel (which I also have!), to support all Chicago-based systems. I'm hoping that maybe a HP Support rep can chime in on this, or someone can tell me where to find tools to recompile to add the SAFUWIN-compatible checksums to a modded BIOS? -Imsai8080 P.S. If it wasn't for the code checksums and the nonstandard SAFUWIN flash programmer, I would already have added the Ivy Bridge microcode myself. Gave it a try, no go so far, but I might keep trying.

  • Dual-core Ivy Bridge and gcc -march

    Hi,
I wanted to give the ck-kernel a try, and, as indicated in the [repo-ck] wiki page I ran
    gcc -c -Q -march=native --help=target | grep march
to see what package is best for me. It says
    -march= corei7-avx
which is surprising, because, according to wiki, it corresponds to a Sandy Bridge processor. However my processor is an i7-3517U, which is a mobile dual-core Ivy Bridge processor.

I am unsure however if there are any other optimisations which occur differently between corei7-avx and core-avx-i as i am not going to try and understand the full inner workings of gcc.
However i did manage to patch gcc to enable core-avx-i support when asking for -march=native except that i am unsure of and repercussions of doing so https://github.com/crondog/misc-patches

  • Question about Ivy Bridge and graphics

Does Ivy bridge CPUs provide great graphics performance?
For basic CS6 rendering, iMovie and soft gaming, an Ivy Bridge MacBook Pro / Air with HD4000 could be the right choice?
In other words, is it worth to get a 15" or the retina for these kind of stuff?
In the past, I had to chose between a GMA and a dedicated card which represented a big upgrade. What about now?
One more thing. I guess the MBP 13" would soon have a retina model too. What about the graphics? I read that HD4000 can handle retina resolution... is it really that powerful?
    Thank you

For basic CS6 rendering, iMovie and soft gaming, an Ivy Bridge MacBook Pro / Air with HD4000 could be the right choice?
I run WoW on my 2011 "off the shelf" Air - 1.7Ghz 4GB RAM *Intel 3000* - runs very reasonably for a light-medium gamer such as myself. 40-60FPS on "fair" settings.
Intel HD 4000 is reportedly around 60% faster than 3000.
Based on this, if my 2011 Air runs WoW this well, I'd say a 2012 Air/13 Pro with Intel 4000 and (strongly recommended) 8GB RAM would see significantly higher performance.
One more thing. I guess the MBP 13" would soon have a retina model too. What about the graphics? I read that HD4000 can handle retina resolution... is it really that powerful?
If Intel 4000 (and even 3000) can handle a 2560x1600 Thunderbolt display I would have no doubt it would handle a 13" retina display which would probably have a similar sized resolution.
This being said, playing games in retina mode with Intel graphics would probably be a no.

  • Ivy Bridge GPU and multi-display configuration

Intel says that the new Ivy Bridge processors can cope with 3 different displays instead of 2 possible with the former generation CPUs. I know that with Mini Dock 3 Plus, the X220 can run two external monitors.
Will an X230 (with Ivy Bridge) run 3 of them, like the ThinkPads with Nvidia Optimus technology?
What max. resolution can they have in this scenario? 3x 1920x1200 or less?
How to evaluate it for any screen configuration?
Maybe I should ask Intel about that.

1: Is there any knowledge of specific problems with the:
Intel Core i7-3720QM processor (6M Cache) on the W530's that prompted Lenovo to eliminate this processor from

Curious about the experience others are having with their W530's equipped with such, please.
2: Also, the Technical aspects, taken from the: W530 Tech Specs page... clearly states that the aforementioned processor  IS: 3.60 GHz. Nothing there about UP TO.
My W530 runs at 2.60 GHz... according to my System specifics.
When I asked the salesman about this, he just told me that the technical department can tweak it up to 3.60 GHz..
which will drain the battery life..And that is why it was not set above 2.60 GHz  when shipped to me.
