W530 calibrator - yellow blush

Hi!
I have a huge problem with built-in X-Rite calibrator. After i calibrate my screen (i tried every combination of the settings) i have a "yellowed" white colour and generally yellow blush. In comparison to this ->
http://www.notebookcheck.pl/uploads/tx_nbc2/Monitor_25.06.2012_1.icc
It's a disaster. Now the question. Is my calibrator corrupted? Or this oveload of yellow is OK? It really hurts eyes... Can you upload the files from your callibration? Thank you for your help!

  • Thinkpad W530 Yellow (Rear) USB port stopped working

I have had my W530 for about 3 month and the rear yellow USB port just stopped working a few days ago. I have recovered the whole system to factory status and updated the BIOS but the USB port is still not working. I tried several devices, it seems like that the USB has no power at all. The LED on the flash drives do not come on when I plug it in. All the other USB ports are working. Has anyone encountered the same problem before? Any help is appreciated.

    Hi all,
The yellow USB port of my W530 stopped working suddenly today. It can charge but cant recognize any devices. The other devices work well. I have tried many ways like updating the bios, setting the bios to defaults... still not working.
seems that its a big issue
    Any ideas? Thank you!

  • Yellow/Green Cast in Photoshop CS6 After Calibrating Retina Display

I am using a MacBook Pro with Retina display, and Color Eyes Display Pro with the Color Eyes to calibrate my screen.  It is working perfectly, except, that when I open Photoshop (or even the Adobe updater now), the whole screen goes bright Green / Yellow!  See the photo attached, it's quite nuts and give you a headache after a few seconds of looking at it.  I have tried turning of the GPU processing thinking it would be conflicting with that, and a dozen other small attempts to get rid of it, and nothing!  I finally am back at the default calibraiton for the Retina display, and it's not that bad, but still obviously not calibrated.  I can't for the life of me find anyone else who has this issue, am I crazy?
    Thanks!

Okay, so, I really only posted that because I figured maybe in the future someone else would run into the same problem.  I found the solution!  Color Eyes Display Pro spits out the ICC profile as a version 4 and LAB based 16 bit file.  Turns out that isn't compatible somehow (would love and Adobe tech to answer why for me, is it GPU or something else bugging out here?).  Thankfully, there is an option in Color Eyes Display Pro to change it.  I changed it to "Matrix Based" instead, and voila!  Here's a screenshot of where that option is, just click on "Profile Setting" and change the second drop-down to Matrix Based.  ICC v2 didn't work for me either, whole program crashed.

  • W530 Color Calibrator does not start

Fresh install of Win 7 (64 bit) on W530.
Applied all the latest drivers including the latest Xrite driver
Calibrator appears to open correctly but at the 'Measure' point of the process .. nothing happens.
No lights, no beep ... nothing.
I have the Xrite window directly to cover the sensor.
    Any ideas?

I solved my own problem, with a helpful post getting me to the (not so obvious) screen to select windows management for color:

  • Calibrating 27in iMac with Spyder 2, yellow tone.

    Hello,
I've been all over the net researching trying to calibrate a 27in Imac with Spyder 2 express 2.3 software, which is what i'm using. When I try to calibrate i've been leaving the brightness at full and not changing anything else. 6500k with 2.2, and I keep getting a yellow tone. I am in a dark room.
I keep reading the LED backlighting and Glossy Screens are big problems when it comes to calibrating the 27 in imacs. I am a photographer so its important that I have accurate color, is there different settings I should try?
Thanks for any input, the yellow tone is definitely way off.
    Trevor

I am using iMac 27" i7 and spyder as well. I don't have any problem calibrating the iMac. The only problem is that some of the iMac will not save the brightness settings and it will automatically resume to the brightest when reboot.
I once complained about the temperature of running W7 on the iMac, they checked my iMac and found minor issue with my display panel (some grey mark on the bottom on the screen), AppleCare voluntarily replaced the display panel for me. Then the diagnostic found an error message with the panel (which I used for 2 to 3 weeks without any issue), they offered to replace another new panel for me. Excellent service.
Why don't you try to contact them about the yellow color on your display, it might not be a spyder issue at all. Cheers.

  • W530 Color Calibration Issue

Every month I re-calibrate my display using the COLOR by PANTONE Color Calibrator (v1.1.0).
I tried doing it today and kept getting this error, even though the tone for successful calibration always goes off:
    Link to picture
I'll try to calibrate the screen once, but it will fail.  When I try a second time, it will also fail, and give me the error seen above.  If I try a third time, I finally get the three failure tones and the software simply closes itself.
Is this a hardware issue?  A driver issue?  Are there any solutions for this?
Recently updated my computer.  Windows 7 64-bit.

    Hi again, crmichae
What updates have you recently done to your machine? I did some research and found two highly relevant updates for your machine in general, and this issue more specifically. If you haven't already updated them, I found drivers for both your BIOS and the your graphics card that  have been released recently and are a good place to start with helping this issue. The graphics driver can be found here and the BIOS can be found here.
Hope it helps. Let me know how it goes,

  • Panel replacement for W530

    Dear all,
Some months ago, in this forum, I was requesting information about the compatibility of panels for the W530 wince my panel, AUO B156HTN01, is an underperforming panel. The contrast ratio I get is lower than 400:1 (average 330:1) and the colour cast I get from it is too blue. While I do have an X Rire i1 Display Pro to correct any casts with the LUT of the graphics card, I still have issues with viewing angles (quite poor) and a bit of a magenta cast and the low contrast ratio as well as the screen door effect which is annoying in white or near white surfaces.
I am a photographer and I would love to trust this computer for field work and colour sensitive work but the difference between this and my NEC monitor is too great to ignore. So, hoping that the v4 or v7 will improve things compared to the panel I was given, I feel like I have nothing much to loose.
So, I have researched a bit on trying to get my hands on a B156HW01 v4 panel or a v7 (glossy with better contrast ratio than v4) and besides the used ones cannibalized from other systems, I have never been able to get a good replacement.
Until now. I managed to get one old stock seller through a contact in Asia and will be getting a v7 since v4s are really out of stock everywhere I can find. The ones that try to sell you v4s will likely send you a "compatible" part...but not the same panel.
I know glossy isn't everyone's taste and it is certainly not mine, but I have colleagues that happily work on their very glossy macs and while they do appreciate the nice matt monitors, the gloss hasn't stopped any of them from working. The colour discrepancy in the B156HTN01 is definitively stopping me from working so I am going to give that a go. Better accuracy on glossy is better than a crap matt.
I'll be posting differences on a before and after state of the computer. To make it very fair, I will re-install everything (windows and the lot) to make sure nothing from previous colour calibration is left behind on this computer to alter the perception of the panels.
If anyone in the UK or EU is interested, I'd be happy to get another one and we can split the total. The panels would be coming to to the UK so if you are in the EU you would need to cover the postage from me to you.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Final part.
For anyone in the UK, please be aware that your parcel may take around 10 days to clear customs and an extra 48hrs for Parcelforce to deliver the parcel to you.
So, after that long wait, I received the new v7 panel and proceeded to make the exchange.
Before that, however, to give the B156HTN01 panel a fair opportunity to prove itself, I took some photographs with the default colour management profile from Lenovo. See the first two images, blue cast, two angles.
Now, to make my point, I ran a quick profile with the largest palette in i1 Profiler (Yes, I know it has its drawbacks, but for a quickie, the profile is not horribly wrong and the contrast ratio is persistent)
    This is the result.
See the contrast ratio here is 247:1...very poor.
I followed this gentleman's video to make the exchange.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Igk0MiqZ_ck
To take the bezel out, however, I used a lens clening microfibre cloth to place my fingertips in between the screen and bezel and it popped out in an easier fashion than what that video shows. So if you go through with this, mind that.
Test after replacement to see if it works.
    Glossy Display W530
Default color management profile on new v7 panel vs NEC PA241w monitor for reference (the NEC screen is calibrated for 6500k, aRGB gamut and gamma 2.2)
Now, profling with DispcalGUI takes a while, but, since we want to measure the success or failure of the new v7 panel, I ran it. The following screenshot shows the almost matching screens with the v7 and NEC monitor AFTER profliing with DispcalGUI.
I was a bit tired so I missed the horizontal framing for these two photos. This is DiscalpGUI's report.
Mind the 632:1 contrast ratio now and that the black luminance is not too bad at 0.2cd/m2. It is not an impressive contrast ratio by today's many 1000+:1 screens but it is very good for a 2 year old panel able to display most of Adobe RGB's colour gamut as seen in this comparison with NEC's Spectraview graph. DispcalGUI for v7 on the left and Spectraview for NEC PA241w on the right.
On DispcaGUI, the dotted line is the AdobeRGB spectrum and in Spectraview's its the yellow line.
    Not bad, eh?

  • Yellow Tinted Screen?

I just got my Mini, hooked up a ViewSonic VA720 LCD to it, and the screen has a yellow tint to it. I can't get rid of it after calibrating the display. When I connect the display to my other non-Mac computers, it displays in normal color, without the tint. Any ideas? I am using the DVI to VGA connector that came with the Mini. Thanks for any help.
    -Justin

Thanks Tim! When I go to the Apple Store, I'm assuming I should bring the CPU and the adapter...I've tried a few times, plugging things in in different order, and nothing seems to be working. There is also some horizontal 'streakiness', especially after things on the screen that contrast sharply, going from left to right. Hopefully an Apple Genius can get 'er working right soon.

  • Lenovo W530 - Stuck at "Loading initial ramdisk" GRUB Discrete graphic

As in the thread https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=146006 (only that I do not have any encryption on my drive) I cannot get my ThinkPad W530 booting (I have installed via EFI) with Discrete graphics mode (set in BIOS). NVIDIA Optimus works with optirun and Integrated graphics works fine but I cannot start with Discrete graphics.
I want to do this since I cannot connect an external monitor to my computer at all right now (the Mini DisplayPort and VGA adapter are only physically connected to the NVIDIA card). I have tried following several more or less incomplete guides on how to start a second X server with bumblebee but I cannot get those working and do not see two X servers a a good solution. I want a virtual display that spans over two monitors. I tried booting the computer with an Ubuntu Live USB stick and it automatically connected and used both monitors (when I set Discrete graphics in the BIOS) even in the installation process, and I can run games like StarCraft II just fine on my Arch install with optirun (when I set NVIDIA Optimus in the BIOS) so the hardware seems to work just fine.
When I boot the regular Arch linux kernel (3.17.1-1-ARCH) with Discrete graphics I get to the message "Loading initial ramdisk...", then the screen turns black. My system is using GDM for login and Gnome as window manager.
I managed to login blindly (not sure if it was through GDM or Ctrl + Alt + F2 since I tried both) during the black screen and execute a command that I later found in my .zsh_history file and I also can see that the drive access led is blinking a while after the black screen so it seems that the system has not hanged entirely. If I disable GDM the screen does not turn black but freezes at the "Loading initial ramdisk..." output.
My /boot/grub/grub.cfg file is (I am not trying to boot with the linux-ck or linux-rt kernel that I also have installed):

  • Professional Calibration for the Powerbook Pro with LED Monitor

This is what I have discovered: The new LED monitor/screen is a better technology for graphics pros because it's brighter, doesn't need to warm up like CRT and LCD, and it's more efficient. I have also discovered that the current Powerbook Pro with LED is not possible to calibrate with a spyder-type device because the computer itself doesn't allow the user to control overall R G and B levels at all...so as to achieve a prcise initial white point setup. Once RGB levels are balanced, only then can a spyder with it's assoc software continue it's recordings with precision. Other problems exist: Apparently the graphics cards in the Powerbook Pro (I have the newest machine, bought Nov 2008, with LED screen) are not able to permit any software (like Monaco Optix) from adjusting the brightness or color levels. As well, to my knowledge, there are not currently any spyders with software which offers LED as an option initially. I tried setting it to LED and LCD with my LED monitor, just to see the difference....and there was a huge one...so it's futile even to use the spyder if the software hasn't been developed with the LED screens in mind.
*What I did was this: I calibrated my LaCie electronBlueIV 22" professional monitor with the sypder...using Monaco Optix and it's XR spyder. Once that was established, I opened a photoshop sample image which has a blue sky, green pine trees, green/yellow grass, a red boat and some white snowcapped peaks. Made a duplicate of it....and placed one copy on the LaCie and the other on my powerbook's monitor just below (I'm running 2 monitors at the same time). Then I went through the "professional" mode of Apple's calibrator. Unfortunately it's not an exact science as one might think. No, you can't work it back and forth until the colors match because of certain ways in which Apple has made their calibrator function. For example, you only set the degrees kelvin at the end...which totally changes all the color levels you have done up until that point....it's complicated to explain, but if you go through it once, you will understand what I'm talking about. Anyhow, so what I did was go through it all the way.....then right before saving the profile....I would go back again (you can go backwards and forwards and it keeps the adjustments you've made already...luckily) and tweak these various adjustments...all the while...*keeping an eye on my 2 images...trying to nudge my powerbook colors/brightness/contrast as close as possible to my calibrated LaCie. Finally, I used the final adjustment (D50/5500/D65 etc....) to put some more warmth into the powerbook's monitor which seems to be much too cold if you only use the calibrator and have no other monitor for reference. I set mine around 5,200......when normally I would be at 5,500 with any other monitor.
It seems I did get my LED monitor pretty close to the values of my calibrated LaCie....as close as I could visually...considering, to my knowledge, there is no current device/software that will calibrate this LED monitor. We're waiting!!
*Just a friendly note to Apple*
    Dear Apple,
For years you are aware that it is the creative professionals (photographers, graphic designers, visual artists, printers, architects, etc...) who have been the loyal backbone of your small market share. We have been the ones investing and reinvesting in Apple computers and peripherals since the beginning...before the ipod and the iphone when all of the other yahoos jumped onboard. Also please understand...we love the new generation of powerbooks but we're tired of having to drag around an extra monitor to insure correct colors for printing/color-matching. I'm a professional photographer who is always traveling internationally...and away from my calibrated monitor in my office. Yet, many times I have to retouch on the go and get the images to my clients..and it's just not possible to work on a calibrated monitor at these moments. Yet my work is precise work and the color values are critical to my clients in the world of fashion and beauty.
Realizing this point.....knowing your core clients are concerned with critical color values....why is it that you continue to create portables with absolutely no precise color controls?!!!!!!!! Would it be so difficult to add a utility which allows the user to digitally control RGB levels, contrast, and brightness (withe their associated numeric levels, (for example: brightness=78.3%.) As well, your own calibration assistant..."professional" mode??? HARDLY. Why not build onto this model with another mode...let's call it "super professional" mode (lol) which allows us to access overall RG&B....as well as brightness and even contrast???
That's what I know at this stage. If anyone has any advice which adds to what I have said, or maybe someone can educate me with a more accurate way to calibrate my monitor....I'm all ears...and I'm sure I'm not alone in this quagmire.
    S,
    Lawrence

I've had the same concerns about the lack of any monitor controls (unless there's something I'm missing), but afraid I don't have any answers myself yet. Just wanted to ask do you mean "Powerbook Pro" or are you talking about a MacbookPro?

  • W520 External Color Calibrator stopped working with updated Pantone v1.1 software

Can someone from Lenovo help me with this issue? Lenovo updated the color calibrator software in Aug 2012. They broke an external color calibrator working. L1/2 has been completely unhelpful. I also escalated to customer service with little result except that they say it is not Lenovo software and they do not have to support it! Unacceptable, the software isprovided by Lenovo. Lenovo doc also says an external color calibrator is supported. Lenovo needs to take responsibility for fixing this. Here are the email chains. I really want a refund or someone to ensure this package that Lenovo distributes is fixed!
     Thanks for your help.

    Hi Kelli,
I do not want this case closed and disagree. This is Lenovo provided software and according to Lenovo an external calibrator is supported. I want someone to take responsibility for getting this fixed. Lenovo has provided this software and needs to work with the vendor to ensure it works. Who do I need to speak to in management? I do not appreciate the way support has just shuttled this around and nothing has gotten done.
    Sincerely,

    Mr Lang,
Please be advised that I have taken this case assigned to Doris. Lenovo is not able help you with this issue, We cannot provide support for a third party product.  The calibrator you are using is supported by X-Rite; any issues with the device need to be addressed by them,
I am sorry for your frustration however Lenovo has exhausted all means to help with a non-hardware issue. At this time Lenovo is closing this case.

These are Thinkpad, mines is an expensive one, and I am very upset that this is the level of support I get (especially after upgrading my warranty even!). Please see what you can do. I would also like a manager to speak to DeAndrea at the call center. I am sure the calls are recorded and he was completely out of line and not helpful. Error with latest update to Pantone Color Calibrator Software (v1.1) and Eye one external calibrator   09-19-201211:39 AM - edited 09-20-201209:10 AM Hi. Can someone have a look at the Pantone 1.1 package. I am using an eye one display calibrator with the updated Pantone software and the calibration does not work. I get an error about an 8 bit image missing (have attached a screenshot). The calibration is not correct and Windows Photoviewer is pink. This was working OK with the v1.0 of the software (no longer on the w520 driver page). The error message is "There was an error loading the specified profile. Please make sure the image has an embedded profile and it is an 8-bit image." This was working fine before the update to v1.1. Thanks

    I am getting the runaround!!!
    Hi Doris,
I just left you a voice mail. One of the reasons I bought this laptop was for 3d photography. If I cannot use an external color calibrator and display then the laptop is not fit for purpose for the reasons I bought it. This software is ONLY available from Lenovo. According to Lenovo’s own doc, and the software’s doc, an external color calibrator is SUPPORTED. Lenovo needs to step to the plate and fix this. Not ME. If Lenovo needs to go to Pantone, or x-rite, then they Need to do that. Lenovo provided software that is not available to the public from x-rite or Pantone, and the software is to support Lenovo provided hardware (least so far as the internal calibrator), this software ALSO supports an external calibrator for use with an external display. The software supports both internal and external, and I would like to use my external display for 3d photography. This needs to be fixed please.
What are we going to do to resolve this? At his point of the runaround I’ve been getting I would like a complete refund.
    Thanks,
    Christopher

    Hi Kelli,
As you know the ‘software’ purchase is by virtue of purchasing the laptop with the color calibrator. Are you saying you will refund my cost for the calibrator? I don’t think you quite get how much time I have spent with support with this laptop. I have had multiple issues with the it. The calibrator, failed BT adapter, Sudden Shutdown syndrome (where the machine would just shutoff on its own –well documented in the Lenovo forums and I have at least a dozen emails on this issue) as well as many issues with the Displayport connection and an external 3d display for which I spent months working with Nvidia to resolve. This laptop has wasted a huge amount of my time. The support has been atrocious.
I would like a refund for 1. The laptop 2. The external color calibrator I cannot use because the software from Lenovo does not work (this package is NOT available from x-rite as well –It is sold to Lenovo). I have a receipt for the color calibrator and would be happy to provide that.
    Thank you,
    Christopher

  • HP Color LaserJet CP1215 - Color printing - Page prints yellow background

Good morning --- I don't believe I have posted to this forum before, so I hope someone can help me solve this issue.
    My CP1215 color LaserJet -
    printing pref set to color-
printing a document with colored icons, etc. or color photograph
Results: the "background" or what should be the white area, is yellow - bright yellow.
If I switch printing pref to B/W, I get a black/white document or photo.  Of course, no color.
I have replaced the yellow toner cartridge (HP product) TWICE, the second one just this morning.
    There are NO error messages.
Tried running the cleaning tool; disconnect/reconnect, etc.  No luck.
I gave up trying to solve this issue 2 years ago, and have kept the pref set to black/white with no tech issues.
Now, however, I have the need to print in color, and I would really like to figure out how to correct this problem.
This printer is a monster - ~30 lbs or more, and I would rather not have to haul it to a computer shop or ship it.
If anyone out there has had this problem, please let me know how/if you were able to resolve it.  Many thanks.

    Hi Threecats
I understand when you print in color you are getting a yellow background.
I have included a document for troubleshooting the all yellow background printing.
Print out a configuration page from Solution eight first. This document  will provide steps for cleaning and calibrating the printer. The Print quality troubleshooting page will identify the print cartridge that is causing the issue.
Let me know the results when you compare it to the one in the document and if the background printed yellow again. Also the Print quality troubleshooting page results.
What kind of paper are you using?

  • Another W530 Review

    Lenovo Thinkpad W530 Review
    by Djembe
One of the longest and most enduring brands in computers is Thinkpad.  Originally developed by IBM in the USA, Thinkpad notebook computers are now manufactured by the Chinese company Lenovo.  The W series debuted in 2009 as the highest-end Thinkpads offered.  They came with the same patented Thinkpad technologies, such as an internal rollcage and shock-mounted hard drives.  However, they also offered competitive workstation-class graphics cards with drivers optimized for professional graphics work.
The W530 is the latest in that line, and it looks almost identical to its predecessor, the W520, with three differences.  Two of these differences are ports: thefull-size DisplayPort of the W520 was replaced with a mini DisplayPort in the W530 and eSATA was eliminated.  The third change is the most noticeable and it has caused some consternation among Thinkpad traditionalists: the traditional Thinkpad keyboard has been replaced by a chiclet-style keyboard with one fewer row.  Does the new keyboard live up to its predecessor?  And is the notebook as a whole a worthwhile addition to the Thinkpad lineup?  Read on to find out.
    Specs
My W530 came with the following specifications:
     Intel Core i7-3720QM processor
    Nvidia K2000M graphics
    15.6” 1920x1080 screen
    500GB 7200RPM hard drive
    4GB memory
    Bluetooth 4.0
    Intel Ultimate 6300 wireless card
    DVD burner
    9-cell battery
Since Lenovo (like virtually every other configurable computer company) vastly overcharges for memory upgrades, I upgraded the memory and storage myself.  Lenovo provides an excellent installation guide for how to do this, which includes instructions for how to replace even the most difficult of items.  Upgrading to a system-maximum 32GB RAM and a 256GB Samsung 830 series SSD was a simple operation.
    Design and Build Quality
Lenovo advertises that Thinkpads are designed to withstand use by the military.  While they are not marketed as rugged notebooks, Thinkpads are expected to be well-built, high quality systems.  In general, the W530 does not disappoint in this.  The chassis is very rigid and does a very good job of protecting the internal components.   I was only able to make the screen image distort when pushing very hard on the back of the lid, and even then, I could only make the image distort when I pressed close to the upper corners.  The hinges are solid and easily hold the notebook lid open at any angle.  Vigorous shaking will cause the screen angle to shift, but it never appears to be the slightest bit wobbly or unsteady.  There is minimal flex anywhere in the chassis.  The W530 is a very well built machine.  The only potential detraction from perfection is that there does seem to be a small amount of wiggle room around the 9-cell battery (which protrudes approximately an inch out the back of the system), but I had no difficulty at all in holding the system up only by the battery and rocking it back and forth.  No disconnections occurred and nothing gave any hint of coming apart or breaking.  As a result, I can confidently say that the small amount of wiggle around the battery does nothing to mar the stellar build quality of the W530.
As to design, Thinkpads have looked basically the same for the last 10 years or longer, so you know what to expect.  At 1.4 inches think, the system is almost twice as thick as many Ultrabooks, but still thinner than some gaming systems with similar performance.  You won’t find aluminum highlights or lighted logos on the W530, but the matte black W530 has an understated look that is appropriate in most environments.
    Screen
The screen on a notebook is an important aspect, since it’s what you’ll be looking at for the majority of the time you’re using the system (except when you’ve got it attached to an external display).  Lenovo offers three screen options for the W530, and I chose the high-resolution 1920x1080 matte display option.  The higher-end screen also has increased brightness over Lenovo’s other screen options, up to 270 nits.  The screen is model number B156HW01 v4 from AU Optronics, which was also used in the last two generations of W-series Thinkpads: the W510 and W520.  So why did they use the same screen?  As the saying goes, if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it.  The screen is bright enough that I only use it on full brightness if I’m using it outside.  For the record, it is sunlight-readable at maximum brightness, although it has a tendency to look a little washed out in bright sunlight.  In all other circumstances, the screen looks very good.  It also has good viewing angles, maintaining color integrity (no color inversion) even at extreme horizontal angles.  Vertical angles are not as forgiving, but the screen definitely has a much larger “sweet spot” than most, it is evenly lit (less than 10% difference between brightest spot and dimmest spot, according to Notebook Check), and its 95% Adobe RGB color gamut means colors are rich and vibrant.
    Keyboard, Touchpad, and Trackpoint
The keyboard is new for this year’s Thinkpads, and even though it loses a row of function keys, it retains the comfort and ease of typing found on previous Thinkpad keyboards.  The keys have adequate travel and typing is an effortless experience.  I find myself making significantly less typing mistakes due to accidental keypresses or overlaps while using the W530 than with most other computers that I’ve used.  And it comes with an additional bonus: the new keyboard, unlike the previous one, is backlit.  The backlighting is customizable in three steps: low backlight, high backlight, and Thinklight, a small light built into the lid that shines down on the keyboard area.  Personally, I find the Thinklight somewhat distracting, since it highlights my hands much more effectively than it highlights the keys underneath them.  However, the keyboard backlighting is done very well and allows for easy key identification in any lighting conditions.
The touchpad is textured, and easily accommodates multitouch gestures.  However, I prefer smooth touchpads and the one on the W530 does not seem as responsive as some of the Asus touchpads I’ve used.  For most gaming or other situations where precise control is needed, I would elect for an external mouse.  However, in its favor, the W530 has dedicated touchpad buttons – two sets, no less!  Another of my personal preferences is that I abhore clickpads.  As an example, I find using Macbook Pros to be annoying due to the fact that you need to press down on the whole clickpad in order to register an action.  The twin sets of left and right click buttons on the W530 are easy to press and responsive.
Additionally, since this is a Thinkpad, it contains a little round nub between the G and H keys that allows for alternate cursor control.  It’s called a trackpoint, and is one of the IBM-patented features that is found in a number of business notebooks today.  I very rarely use this while websurfing or working with productivity applications, but I found it to be significantly more useful than the touchpad while playing Portal 2 and I ended up using the trackpoint throughout the game.
    Connections
The W530 has a full selection of ports.  On the right side of the notebook, you can find the DVD tray, Ethernet, the combined headphone/microphone port, a card reader, and an ExpressCard slot.  The left side holds 3 USB ports, two of which are the latest USB 3.0 spec.  Also on the left side are VGA, mini DisplayPort, IEEE 1394 (Firewire), a hardware wireless switch, and the exhaust vent.  The vent makes a very effective hand warmer, if you are doing anything resource-intensive.  On the back, in addition to the battery, there is the power plug and a yellow USB 2.0 port that can remain powered even when the system is turned off in order to easily charge cell phones, tablets, or other USB-powered peripherals.
    Performance
Three years ago, the first time I tested a system with a quad-core processor, I was disappointed because there was no noticeable performance increase.   Intel has done some improvements with their quads since then and the i7-3720 performs admirably.  Its default clock speed is 2.6 Ghz, however it happily will use Turbo Boost to overclock up to 3.6 Ghz as the cooling allows.  Under maximum load with all cores via Prime 95, the CPU still maintains an overclock to 3 Ghz.  I must mention, though, that this is all when the system is plugged in.  In order to preserve battery life, Lenovo has limited the CPU to slightly under half its default clock speed while on battery power.  This means that even with a high CPU load, the processor will not go faster than 1.2 Ghz while on battery.  To benchmark the processor, I used Geekbench, an OS-agnostic CPU performance benchmark tool.  The i7-3720QM scored 10870 plugged in and only 4100 when unplugged, so the difference in CPU capacity is clear.  But even with this difference, I have found that this limitation actually has comparatively little effect on my usage while on battery.  Games, for instance, run perfectly well on battery power.  For those who need more processing power unplugged, you can remove this limitation with a program called Throttle Stop.  Of course, it goes without saying that running heavy CPU-intensive programs will drastically reduce the battery life.
The W530 comes with an Nvidia Quadro K2000M and uses Nvidia’s Optimus graphics switching to go between the dedicated graphics and the integrated Intel 4000 graphics, according to program need.  In my experience, Optimus seems to switch graphics adapters in a logical manner according to program need, but in the case that it chooses the wrong graphics adapter for the program you need, you can set up program-specific preferences to use either integrated or dedicated graphics as desired.  The K2000M is based on Nvidia’s Kepler architecture and 28nm process technology.  As a professional GPU, it is aimed more at content creation than content consumption.  Still, the K2000M is a capable midrange graphics card, able to play all the latest games at medium-high settings.  The K2000M has comparable performance to the Fermi-based 560M and is a little bit less powerful than the Kepler-based 650M.  Portal 2 can be played at fluid framerates at native resolution and maximum settings.  Starcraft 2 is playable on native resolution at maximum settings, but some more demanding sections are not fluid (30+ FPS), so I lowered to high settings and everything runs smoothly.  Civilization 5 runs smoothly at medium-high settings, and Dragon Age: Origins works well at near maximum settings, all on native resolution.  The system scores right around 2000 points in 3DMark 11, varying from 1970 to 2053.
The Samsung 830 SSD contributes a lot toward making the system feel fast.  The system boots in approximately 32 seconds from pressing the power button to everything loaded in the Windows desktop and shuts down in 14 seconds.  On battery power, these numbers rise slightly with 45 seconds to start and 17 seconds to shut down.  The SSD also allows for higher scores in PCMark 7.  And speaking of PCMark 7, I experienced a curious thing when running the benchmark multiple times on two different W530 units.  The first W530 provided a very respectable top score of 4910 in the benchmark, which is roughly the same as scores by the new Retina Macbook Pro.  However, the second W530 on which I ran the benchmark netted a score of 6765, which is, as of the date of this review,  the highest score among systems with the Intel Core i7 3720QM processor.
    Audio
The W530 comes with Dolby Home Theater v4, which allows music and video to sound quite good.  There are three presets as well as a graphic equalizer that comes with the software.  While bass is lacking compared to any dedicated speakers, this is a common situation in notebooks and bass in the W530 is better than most.  Overall, the W530 has very acceptable audio at reasonable volume.
    Heat and Noise
The fan on the W530 is always on by default, and its 2700RPM minimum rotation speed is loud enough to be noticeable in a quiet room.  Under maximum load, the fan can ramp up to 4200RPM, which makes it louder but never really unpleasant.  Still, in order to reduce the fan noise when the system did not need it, I installed Thinkpad Fan Control, which allowed me to set my own temperature points and fan speed levels.  As a result, the notebook is completely quiet as long as the processor is under 55 degrees Celsius.  Further, the fan is very effective and able to quickly cool the processor and video card without significantly heating up the rest of the chassis.  Under maximum load (Prime 95 + Furmark), the keyboard only felt slightly warm, and the only really hot area on the notebook was immediately above the exhaust vent.  Under normal use, the notebook remains cool and as comfortable to use on my lap as it is on a table.
    Battery Life
My W530 came with a 9-cell battery rated for 94 Watt-hours.  While playing games such as Starcraft 2, the battery lasts approximately 2 hours.  Playing DVDs at full brightness with the K2000M resulted in approximately 4 hours of battery life.  Web surfing at half brightness results in 7-8 hours battery life, depending on surfing habits.  And very light web surfing, note taking, and word processing at half brightness results in 9 hours of battery life.  That number can be extended all the way up to 11 hours at minimum brightness.  Basically, the W530 can last an entire business day unplugged as long as it was not needed for anything very resource-intensive.
Customer Service, Support, Repair and Replacement
Typically, a review would not include a section on support.  However, something happened to my initial W530 unit and I can provide a perspective on Lenovo’s support experience.  The problem that developed was a failure of the Intel 4000 integrated graphics.  All other systems and components, including the quad-core processing cores on the i7-3720QM, worked fine.  However, running only on the Nvidia graphics caused the battery life to be affected (6 hours maximum, compared to 11 hours maximum running on Intel graphics), and so I called Lenovo.  The service tech to whom I spoke remoted into my computer and looked at the recent Windows updates I had downloaded.  He suggested that I restore to an earlier point prior to the Windows updates, and if that did not work, to call back and Lenovo would fix it.  Needless to say, it did not work and I called back.  The service rep sent a box for the computer to be sent to the EasyServ repair depot.
I sent the box out the following day with my computer, and did not see my system again for over a month.  The online status listings for my system changed from “being repaired” to “waiting for customer information” at least 4 times during that period.  Since I was frequently checking the status in hope that my computer would be repaired and sent back to me quickly, I called Lenovo whenever I saw that the status was “waiting for customer information.”  As a result, I was able to follow along with the story of how my computer’s repair was progressing.  It went something like this:  First, the techs re-imaged my hard drive (I sent the machine back with all the original parts, keeping my upgrades until I got it back).  That did not fix the issue (which I could have told them, since I tried using different drives myself before calling Lenovo) and led to the first “hold for customer information.”  At no point during any of these holds did they actually need any information from me, but it seems to be the universal code they chose to use for “waiting for [whatever].”  First, they were waiting to escalate it to a higher level tech.  Then, I was told I needed a new motherboard and they were waiting on the new board.  Then, I was told that the new motherboard did not work and they were referring the system to a design team.  Then, the design team discovered that they shipped and installed the wrong new motherboard and it needed a different one.  Then, I was told that the different new motherboard was backordered and it would take longer to arrive.
During the first four weeks that they had my system, I called Lenovo maybe six or seven times, and they did not call me once.  The situation was rather frustrating.  However, after approximately four weeks, one of the service reps gave me the phone number of a specific employee, who informed me that since my repair had taken so long, Lenovo was going to replace my computer.  He said a member of Lenovo’s Executive Replacement Team would call me to set up the replacement.  A week later, I was able to talk to the Executive Replacement Team member, who confirmed the specifications of my unit and said the replacement computer would arrive in 2-3 weeks.  Two days later, I got my original computer back from the depot.  Thankfully, I was then able to use the original system until the new one arrived.  Now, I am typing this review on the new system and everything works well.
Lenovo’s customer service staff were unexceptionally friendly and helpful.  I spoke to a number of them, and each and every one was courteous and willing to help.  Lenovo’s replacement staff were also easy to talk to, responsive, and effective.  The EZServ repair techs, however, appear to leave something to be desired.  I bought a 3 year warranty , including Thinkpad Protection and on-site service.  If anything goes wrong again with my Thinkpad, I am going to insist on the on-site service option.
    Value & Recommendation
The Lenovo Thinkpad W530 is a well-built notebook with very good performance, thermal design, and battery life.  Very few computers manage all of these together, and the down side of the W530 is price: it is more expensive than other systems with similar performance.  Still, I believe the extra price is justified by what the computer delivers: a solid system with no compromises.
You should buy one too if:
You want a system that will last a number of years
You need a combination of excellent performance and excellent battery life
    Consider something else if:
You’re on a strict budget and want the most performance for the money
You want a computer with a style that will turn heads

  • Suggestion and Comments for a w530 unit

    Hello Everyone,
I've been using macbookpro for almost 4 years, and since I heavily use AutoCad, Sketchup and Lightroom on a daily basis it has been a bothersome to rebooth from one OS to another. I have been looking at the W530 for quite sometime and decided to make the swtich. I hope someone can enlighten me on how to go about the purcahsing of W530. From Lenovo site, i intend of getting this specification and minor upgrade of some specs:
Lenovo w530 Intel Core i7-3940XM Processor Extreme Edition (8M Cache, up to 3.80 GHz)
    Window 7 pro 64 bit
    Lightroom 4
15.6" FHD (1920 x 1080) LED Backlit AntiGlare Display, Mobile Broadband Ready
    NVIDIA Quadro K2000M Graphics with 2GB DDR3
    16 GB PC3-12800 DDR3 (4 DIMM)
    500GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm
    Bluetooth 4.0
    Third Party Source Items:
Additional 2 8gb Ram, so total of 32GB
    msata AData XPG x300 256gb
    2.5" sata ssd 512gb
Hard drive caddy from new mode us. com
    Questions:
    1.   If in case, I need to add additional ram, would it be okey to just buy an additional 2 pcs of 8GB of Corsair Vengance, or do i need to buy a new 4 pcs of 8GB? so the total ram would be 32GB. Or would it be wise to just get the 32GB of Ram from Lenovo?
    2.  I plan to use the 500gb HDD in the hard drive caddy and use the msata and 2.5" ssd for primary drive, What would be the best way to copy the Windows and Lightroom from the HDD to msata drive (256gb adata)?
    3. How come some unit with the w530 comes with a color sensor option and the higher w530 specs does not? would it be wise to get the Color sensor/ calibration from Lenovo or Just get other calibration software? and can you suggest in your experience a good calibration software for w530?
    4.  and lastly, does all w530 whether it be lower end specs or high end spec has a msata connection? Sorry of the ignorance.
Really sorry for a long post and questions.  I hope someone could enlighten me before i purchase this unit. Any suggestions and comment would be highly appreciated. Thanks

    Hi.
I'm almost in your same boat; used a Macbook when travelling for AutoCAD and I just ordered a W530 (should arrive Thursday) after a long period of agonizing of the purchase. I'll update this thread once I've used it a bit if you'd like, but I have some comments on your post:
    1. My understanding is that RAM works best when all sticks are of the same capacity. Personally, I ordered the W530 with the least RAM possible and am replacing all factory with Corsair Vengance.
    2. Use drive cloning software.(check out this site: http://lifehacker.com/5839753/the-best-disk-cloning-app-for-windows). I'm eschewing the mSATA and going with a 500gb SSD (found the Samsung 840 for $279) as the main drive with the 500gb HDD in the ultrabay (mSATA slot vacant). Why do you need the hard drive caddy?
    3. Not sure. I didn't go top-of-the-line as you are so my config had the color sensor option.
    4. All have the mSATA.
