W530 crackling noise (not speaker related)

I got my W530 about a month ago, so this (hopefully) isn't a case of old hardware.
The upper left side of my keyboard has been making loud crackling / popping noises. It started the day after I got the laptop, and has been occurring every day since. It's coming from the area squarely over the fan, but when I took the keyboard off and looked, I didn't see any obstruction or apparent damage to the fan.
I don't think it has anything to do with the speakers- the noise happens regardless of whether I've muted them or not.
Thanks in advance.

Could that be a “clicking” noise rather than “crackling”? It probably is your HD. I have never restored from Time Machine, but judging from some of the top users in these forums I don’t see it as the preferred method for back-up. Their preferences seem to run toward Carbon Copy Clone or Super Duper, both of which create a fully bootable back-up. I personally use Carbon Copy Cloner because of it’s boot capability which means that all your data & apps will be saved and you can start up from your external drive and continue to work until you replace your internal drive.

  • Static crackling noise, Right speaker when audio is being played

I recently purchased this Satellite C50D-A Windows 8 Laptop. I have had it for less than 3 months. Recently the right speaker has started acting up with some sort of high pitched static crackling noise whenever audio is played regardless of it being in a web browser or any other media. Even computer sounds are distorted from this. I typically use this computer for school and play music to study. How the hell can I fix this so I can actually listen to audio without this rather irritating issue?

I tried that and it didnt seem to do much of anything.
I played part of a song on spotify and recorded it to perhaps give you an example of what it sounds like?
I covered the left speaker so most of what you hear is the right speaker alone. The distortion is pretty clear when audio comes out of that speaker.

  • My mac makes a typewriter sound when I use my mouse.  It is not speaker related, the sound continues after I turn the volume down.  What is this and how do I make it stop?

My mac has just started making a sound similar to an old fashioned typewriter while I an on line using the mouse.  It does not seem to make this sound while I am using the keyboard.  It is likely electrical because it continues even when I have turned the speaker volume down.  Does anyone know what may be causing this and how it can be stopped.
    Thanks

Open your mac pro and listen carfully.  It could be coming from a failing hard drive or a bad fan.  If you have more than one drive you could remove the ones you are not currently using and add them back one by one to try to localize or eliminate the sound.  Caution though, only remove drives when your machine is off.  You cannot hot swap the drive bays.

  • IMac G5 running OS 10.4.11. Started playing with a bluetooth speaker (may or may not be related). Now I cannot get past the blue screen on startup. I can get into safe mode. Tried install disc for disc utility and reloaded OS. Still get blue screen.

I have an older iMac G5 running OS 10.4.11. The other day I started playing with a bluetooth speaker (may or may not be related). Now I cannot get past the blue screen on startup.
I can get into safe mode. But no regular startup.
I tried disabling bluetooth, thinking that might be related. It didn't help.
I even tried using the install disc to run disc utility. That didn't work so I reloaded the OS.
But I still get hung on the blue screen when trying a normal startup.
    All help would be appreciated.

Try resetting the PMU/SMU and PRAM/NVRAM. You'd need to identify the mode of resetting depending on the model of your G5 iMac. The Apple support sites that would help you for this are –

  • Crackling noise in left speaker

    Hi!
I have my MacBook (2,20 Ghz) since a few days (running MacOS 10.5.1). Since the beginning... there is a crackling noise in the left speaker (just like out of an old recordplayer) once in a while.
    Is this a known problem???
    Thx and cheers!

This issue was fixed by changing the MainLogicBoard.

  • Severe sound crackling noise with SB X-Fi ExtremGamer and 680i m

My computer suddenly (~3 weeks+ after my new build) started making extremely loud crackling noises anytime I have sound on. I remember hearing some crackling noise before on one occasion, but not nearly at this level and it seemed to "magically" disappeared so I forgot about it.
I swapped the speakers to another computer and verified that they are not the source. Unfortunately, I do not have another sound card to swap and check. I updated all of my mobo and sound card drivers, and tried my sound card on both PCI slots on the 680i, all to no avail. EDIT:Happens even with no applications and speakers on, just having Windows running has a slight crackle. No overclocking on my system.
On-board sound is disabled on BIOS.
It still makes ths sound with speaker wires touching absolutely nothing (and also stretched out as to not be wound up).
    No microphone on my system.

  • Crackling noise when waking form sleep

    Hi all,
my iMac has started making a crackling noise and is a bit noisy when waking form sleep? This goes away once it is started up.
    Is this normal?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
My iMac 27" (i7) exhibits the same phenomena. I have verified the following:
-It happens whenever waking from sleep, but only after sleeping for a fairly long time, at least a couple of hours. If It has been asleep for only half an hour or so it does not happens. I have not establshed the minimum sleep time necessary.
-It does not happen when booting the iMac.
-It does not happen if I only set the screen to turn off (and no sleep) so It is possibly not screen related.
I think it might have something to do with the power supply. It "feels" like there is some build up (of something) while the machine is asleep, that is released when it awakens.
It does not "feel" normal to me.....

  • The mysterious crackling noise

Yes, this is another crackling noise post. But hopefully, it will be peculiar enough to capture your curiosity long enough to provide me with an answer
Like so many others, I get crackling noises on my recordings. However, this only started occuring after upgrading to Leopard and Logic 8 Pro (which, unfortunately, happened at the same time, so I'm not quite sure which of these might be the culprit).
I mainly record to my computer using an POD X3 Live, connected through an USB interface. I haven't been able to test recording with the POD to another machine that has Logic 8 and Leopard on it, but I know that the sound output from the POD is clean of any crackling noises.
Like any good Logic user is supposed to, I started changing my buffer size and buffer range to eliminate the crackling noises, though I really didn't like doing it. I've a reasonably powerful computer, after all, and should be able to use very small buffers. I WAS using very small buffers in Logic 7 under Tiger, far smaller than I can use now.
However, switching to larger buffer sizes didn't eliminate the crackling noises, only slightly reduced the frequency at which they appear. So, I'm drawing the conclusion that this is not related to my computer power, especially since my HD and CPU meters at the bottom of the Logic 8 never go above 5-10%, at the very most.
The only thing I've been able to connect to the crackling noises is that they appear with far greater frequency when I've used the computer for other stuff before recording without restarting. So, having played a game for a while or watched a movie will almost always ensure I get crackling noises unless I restart before using Logic 8 to record.
I'm even starting to wonder if the additional GB of RAM I installed at the same time as upgrading to Leopard and Logic 8 might be the cause. But I've had none of the other common problems normally connected to a bad RAM module (random shutdowns, etc).
So, does anyone have an idea about what might cause this? The POD? The USB connection? The RAM, Leopard, Logic 8, or my removal of the curve in the new transparent dock? A particularily bad taste in movies and computer games?

@twits celso: The interface I use is the POD X3 Live. It's a guitarboard/recording interface that is connected via USB.
But many thanks for your two suggested solutions. I'll be trying them both, and post the results!
@noeqplease: The POD is very compatible with Leopard. Line6 (the makers) had the new Leopard POD drivers up on their webpage a few hours after the release of Leopard. Give me a little more credit than trying to run an USB-connected audio interface/recording device with old drivers
However, it might very well be the drivers, but no other Leopard users on the Line6 forums have reported similar problems, which leads me to believe Logic might be involved in this, somehow...

  • Crackling noises on CDs

I've been having troubling burning CDs recently. Every time I burn a CD the tracks toward the end of the disc have progressively worse "crackling" noises--at first it sounds almost like a record crackling, but by the last track it is usually almost all crackle and no song. I know it is not a problem with the files themselves--as the songs don't make a crackling noise when I'm playing the files on itunes. Also, importing songs from CDs is still working 100% fine. So is DVD burning. It's only a problem burning CDs (and, in particular, tracks toward the end of the CD.)

Could be a problem with the brand of CDR blanks (my advice is to avoid Memorex brand at all costs).
But also it might be related to burn speed. With data files it does not matter much, but when making audio CDs, burning at too high a speed can lay down a ton of errors on the CD. Normally the audio error correction algorithm can filter out some errors, but when you get way to many, it can't and those errors begin to show up as clicking, static, etc.
So my suggestion is to NOT use "Best" for audio CD burn speed and instead try 8x or lower and see if that makes a difference.

  • Crackling Noise Hard Drive or Speakers?

While listening to some music last night, I wondered if the low grade crackling noise I was hearing meant the speaker(s) were going bad in my G5 or if that is the death noise of a dying hard drive. Knock on some wood, but I've never had a hard drive go bad in 19 years of having macs. No other problems, just that noise. Which it is making even though I'm not playing music now (that's the scary part). If it is a hard drive, I'm worried how much backing up Time Machine actually does on my external drive...is it backing up the applications, too, or will I have to reinstall all those if the drive croaks? When I look on Time Machine, it looks like everything on my computer is there, including music & pictures. If you use Time Machine, can you restore it on an entirely different computer (meaning not the same size drive or OS)?

Could that be a “clicking” noise rather than “crackling”? It probably is your HD. I have never restored from Time Machine, but judging from some of the top users in these forums I don’t see it as the preferred method for back-up. • Crackling noise on iPhone 3GS

I hear crackling noise from the ear speakers when I increase the volume. Sound's very irretating... Can't reduce the volume cause my assignment demands outdoor activities... Restored the phone using iTune, but its been of little help. Could this mean hardware replacement or is there something more that am missing to fix this????

Standard troubleshooting steps in the following order:
    1. Power the iphone off, then back on.
    If no change, continue:
    2. Reset: Press the sleep/wake button & home button at the same time, keep pressing until you see the apple logo, then release. Ignore the slide to power off. No saved data or settings will be lost.
    If no change, continue:
    3. Restore your phone from your most recent backup, Note, however: if the problem is related to corrupt data in your phone's backup, while this will restore a fresh OS, it will also restore the problem.
    If no change, continue:
    4. Restore as a "new" phone in itunes & re-sync your content. All saved data will be lost.
If no change, make an appointment at an Apple store, as you most likely have a hardware problem. There are no more user troubleshooting steps available.

  • Crackling noise then disconnects

My iPhone is making a crackling noise during calls, then drops them.  I have powered off & back on

How is your iphone working otherwise? Have you spoken with your cell phone carrier, it might be a network issue not a phone issue. You could try a new reinstall with factory settings but I would speak with your cell phone provider first.

  • ALSA USB Headset Crackling Noise

Hi, I'm having some problems with my USB Headset that I'm using for my sounds, which when I play anything with sounds in it, it gives me crackling noises. I'm using ALSA and my headset is the Razer Megalodon, however, the headset works perfectly fine on Windows, just not on linux. I tried all of the usb ports on my computer and all of the solutions in the wiki for ALSA, such as using and installing asoundconf from AUR and adding "options snd-usb-audio nrpacks=1" to my /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf with no luck.
I even tried using PulseAudio, hoping that I'd get some better results, but sadly, I still get crackling noises. I even tried adding "tsched=0" in my /etc/pulse/default.pa with no luck.
Here's my lsmod: https://gist.github.com/anonymous/5333572 or if you prefer: http://ix.io/54h
I'd really appreciate it if someone could help me fix this problem, thanks.

    This blog seems to suggest:

    This trick doesn't help too
Doesn't help me either, I tried adding that to /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf and still doesn't work. I tried changing from snd-hda-intel to snd-usb-audio and that doesn't work either. I even tried typing in: "modprobe snd-hda-intel power_save=0 power_save_controller=N" and that didn't work. Also tried changing the snd-hda-intel of the modprobe command to snd-usb-audio, still doesn't work.
Anyone else have any ideas? This crackling noise is really obnoxious and makes watching things unbearable.
EDIT: I didn't fix the problem, but what I did was remove ~/.asoundrc and ~/.asoundrc.asoundconf. I edited /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf and removed everything and added "blacklist snd_hda_intel" so I didn't have to deal with any onboard soundcards. I removed asoundconf from my computer and removed pulseaudio (just in case). All I have installed that's related to sound is: alsa-lib, alsa-plugins, alsa-utils, and lib32-alsa-lib. I'm going to be working with a completely clean configuration of ALSA, so if anyone has any suggestions please go ahead and let me test it out. Obviously if anything relates to snd-hda-intel, it won't work on mine because I blacklisted it, thanks. Also, what was funny enough was that when I completely uninstalled everything and had a clean configuration, my sound was working completely fine with no crackles for the first time! But when I restarted my computer, it went back to crackling for some reason.

  • Crackling Noise When Receiving Calls

Hey, I've had my iPhone 3G since its release. This morning, I noticed that when I recieve a call, the person on the other side can hear me fine, but all I hear is a crackling noise. When I make a call, its fine. When I receive a call with the iPod speakers in, its fine.
It was fine last night, it just started this morning. Does anyone have any idea what this could be?

This is probably a network problem, not the phone, if you can hear OK on some calls but not others. If you consistently can hear through the headset, but not the earpiece speaker, that may be another problem and try resetting the phone, or restoring it. What happens when you use the speakerphone?

  • SHOCK: X200 noise (not fan) at different power settings

Very quiet machine in general. But finding an important issue 30min after I have hands on it:
When I switch power setting to Timers Off, I heard very loud electrical current noise, from near the battery (upper part of the keyboard). I thought it was something peculiar to "Timers Off", but turns out not. I observed occassional same issue with "Max Performance" / "Energy Saver" /etc.
It's NOT from the AC adaptor. it IS from the machine itself. Not related to whether using speaker or headphone. Not related to whether using AC adaptor or just battery.
Btw, I just opened the box and did Windows updates. Not software related. Any firmware issues here?
    Any comments?
    Thanks!

    Mailxiaodan,
Thanks for posing the question here and sharing audio file.   Without seeing your machine in person, and solely going by your description and the sounds, I don't believe this is an electrical discharge in the way you might think.  I don't believe this is any kind of arcing, etc.
What I think this sounds like is some kind of ground problem and you are getting feedback through the speaker in the system.
I would suggest you call support and set up service for this machine.   This is clearly not the way the system is designed or intended to work!
Sorry that your having this trouble.
Please let us know how it goes with service, or if you need any help with that.
    Best regards,
    Mark
