W530 Drive Bay Adapter and Drive Caddy

I purchased a W530 and immediatly swapped out the included hard drive for an SSD. I also purchased the drive bay adapter and planned on moving that original drive to it, but it did not come with a drive caddy. If the drive bay does not come with an extra one, and hard drives do not come with them.... why was it not included? Where do I purchase one? Does it need those rubber sides that are now around the SSD?

Hey Chuntley,
If you search around the forums you will find a lot of post on this or close to this subject about installing a second drive to W530.

  • T510/520 Drive Bay Adapter III and SSD compatibility

    Hi,
I would like to use a Drive Bay Adapter III with some SSD as second drive on my T510 and T520 (I would switch it between those two laptops, use it to transfer data and so on). Are there any compatibility issues out there? Should I avoid certain SSD controllers or is it perfectly the same if I go for Sandforce or Marvell or any other?
    Thank you.

    Hello flashheart:
The Drive Bay Adapter III or Ultrabay adaptor (#0A65623) would replace the optical drive, which you probably are already aware of. There should not be any compatibility issues with either of those controllers but I have read many instances in the forum that the Sandforce controller is probably the fastest.
Some more information on the adapter:

  • Thinkpad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter

I would like to install a second hard drive in my T61. I saw a thread that advised I can do this by purchasing a "Thinkpad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter". The thread also had a link where one can be purchased. However, the page displayed by the link said that the product was unavailable. Do I have any other options for installing a second hard drive? Will this adapter become available for purchase in the future? I want to install solaris or Linux on the second drive and boot from it, I assume this is possible. Thanks.

according to the Lenovo website, yes it is the right model for the T61.

  • T60 drive bay adapters and HDDs

I was wondering, are there manufacturers of internal hard drives that work better or worse with the t60 drive bay adapter than others? I heard sometimes people have trouble with hard drives being too noisy or unstable within the adapter.
    Thanks in advance.

not really, you may want to use a 5400 rpm rather than the 7200 rpm version.

  • Thinkpad 256GB Solid State Drive 43N3417 won't fit into Drive Bay Adapter 43N3412

According to Document ID  PD010634, http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/product-and-parts/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-73170 and Document ID  PD013418, http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/product-and-parts/detail.page?&LegacyDocID=MIGR-73173 it should fit with the 1.8" to 2.5" converter.
When I try to fit the drive into the Drive Bay Adapter, it won't fit.  It is like the plastic housing is just a little too big.  The adapted drive end appears to be correct, but the housing is just a little too big.  I don't want to force it and break something.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks so much.

    Hello,
    please try the following procedure.
Then SSD must be installed in your TP. Then clone your image from extern disc to internal SSD.
The other way, from internal to external , won´t work.

  • W530 drive bay design flaw - drive slide out of connectors?

Hi, I recently purchased a W530 with a hard drive bay and I've been experiencing trouble with the bay.
The problem is that there is no mechanism in the drive bay to keep the drive "in bay" - i.e. connected. Because of a small gap between the drive and the wall of the bay the drive will slide out of the connector when the laptop is put in the bag vertically.
this seems to me like a major design flaw in the drive bay, and I'm wondering if others are experiencing the same issue and know about any workarounds.

First, you buy the right 12.7mm-high UltraBay HDD caddy adapter that is compatible with the W530. Second, you put the HDD in the hollow space of the caddy adapter and secure the HDD with the four tiny screws that are provided as part of the caddy adapter. Finally, you plug the whole thing (caddy **bleep** drive) into the UltraBay until the secure latch "clicks" and the caddy bezel flushes evenly with the right side of the chassis.
There are no "rubber rails" involved.
There are NO screws supplied with the Lenovo 12.7mm UltraBay caddy. The caddy presumes that you are using a Lenovo supplied HDD with the drive tray and the rubber rails Look at the diagrams on the flexible cover on the caddy. The Newmodeus caddy uses screws only (supplied) and does not need the rubber rails nor the drive tray.

  • USB to RS232 Adapter and Driver Advise - Heeeeelllllllpppppp Please!!

    Hi All,
Can someone please help me with an issue im having.
I currently have a hl-340 usb to rs232 adapter for me to be able to Console on to cisco equipment (as i am a network engineer).
I can not get this to work!! i have installed the pl2303 driver as recommended by the place who sold this to me on ebay which has not worked, i have looked around and saw the option of installing the keyspan for this product USA-19HS but with no joy.
I need to get this working ASAP or look to purchase a new one. I am based in the UK so if it is not possible to get this working then can you advise on what one will work?
I am a novice to the Mac so any assistance you can all give will be greatly received.
    Thanks

Let's figure out what you have first. Plug in you RS-232 adapter. If the system has a driver that recognizes it, it should pop up a window about detecting a new network interface. If that happens, your USB device is recognized and should be working. If not, you may have the wrong driver loaded.
In any case, open the System Profiler application (click the Apple logo in the menu bar, then About This Mac, then More Info). When the app opens, click USB (under the Hardware heading) in the left window pane. This will reveal all detected USB buses, hubs, and devices. On my system, my RS-232 adapter shows up as USB-Serial Controller. Clicking on it shows these details in the bottom pane:
    USB-Serial Controller:
    Product ID: 0x4026
    Vendor ID: 0x1453
    Version: 3.00
    Speed: Up to 12 Mb/sec
    Manufacturer: Prolific Technology Inc.
    Location ID: 0xfd323000
    Current Available (mA): 500
    Current Required (mA): 100
Your details may be different, especially the Product and Vendor ID. For the PL2303 driver to work, I think the important part is that the Manufacturer is Prolific Technology. If it's something else, you may need a different driver. Try to find your device, and reply back with its details.
With the adapter still connected, click Extensions (under the Software heading) in the left window pane. A list of all kernel extensions will be displayed. This will take a while.
On my system, with the driver that I recommended, the extension name is osx-pl2303. Clicking on it shows these details in the bottom pane:
    osx-pl2303:
    Version: 1.0.0d1
    Last Modified: 05/27/06 11:49
    Kind: Universal
    Architectures: i386, ppc
    64-Bit (Intel): No
    Location: /System/Library/Extensions/osx-pl2303.kext
    Kext Version: 1.0.0d1
    Load Address: 0x3599e000
    Valid: Yes
    Authentic: Yes
    Dependencies: Satisfied
If yours also displays this, then your device should be working. If so, then you'll need to figure out how to get your software to recognize it. Reply back with whatever details you find.

  • Optical Drive Bay Hard Disk Drive Caddy

    Hi,
I have an old Compaq Presario v2036AP Notebook PC.
I would like to replace it's optical drive with new Hard Disk. I have tried to find a compatible caddy for the same but was not able to find any
Is there any way I can add another HDD to my laptop?
I do not want to use any external disk.
Also, if possible could anyone help me in identifying that what type of caddy drive I may require (SATA to SATA or PATA to SATA, etc.)
    Thanks for your help

Definitely upgrade memory to at least 16 GB. Consider upgrading the video card to a 650M. For the rest it looks good, if you can live with a super glossy screen.

Yes, that's the detailed specs on the support site for the Ultrabay III drive tray.  This fits W520 and W530, along with T420/T430 and T520/T530.    Looks like we just haven't updated that page to reflect the compatibility with the new models at time of this post.
Note: the T420s and T430s require a slimmer unit, and if you use the T420s or T430s bay or optical  in the other T and W's you will have a gap.

  • T530 drive bay questions

I friend of mine just upgraded his old laptop from standard HDD to SSD drive and I was super impressed by the load time going from about 60 seconds to 10.  So I'm planning for an eventual upgrade for my T530 to do the same maybe a few months from now.
I believe the T530 is Sata III and the Crucial site says the m4 256GB drive with 6Gb speed is compatible, so I think that would fit the bill perfectly.
Since I do not currently have the laptop with me right now, I'm trying to read spec docs and getting a bit confused.  Does the T530 have two drive bays?  I think yes, one regular and one Ultrabay.  If so, are they both capable of the same speed?  I would think yes.
If so, I was thinking I would upgrade to the m4 SSD for the primary drive and utilize the 7200rpm factory drive in the Ultrabay slot or would that not be possible?  If that is possible, would having the two drives in there result in a noticable decrease in battery life?
If that is not possible, my plan would be to just install the SSD as the primary and put the existing 7200rpm drive into an external enclosure and utilize it for backups or data storage.  I'll need to figure out the best way to get the OS transferred between drives, but I've read a few posts on that here, so seems doable.
Thanks ahead of time for any info.

    dudeman135 wrote:
Edit:  Actually looking at the link on ebay from above, that adapter says Sata II.  I will search a bit and see if I find anything about a similar Sata III adapter while I wait for more responses.
The official Lenovo description of the ThinkPad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter III (FRU 43N3412 for 9.5mm and 0A65623 for 12.7mm) doesn't indicate what SATA version it supports either. All it says is that it supports HDs and SSDs. (The info for the new 12.7mm FRU comes from marketing materials that were published when the Tx30 series was launched.)
In any case, standard usage would have the SSD as the primary device in the main HD/SSD bay and the original HD in the UltraBay adapter. The SSD would run the OS and main applications using SATA-III. Presumably the HD would be used for less speed critical stuff like large data store and backups so whether it can handle SATA-III data transfer speeds is probably not particularly important. Even SATA-II is far faster than USB 2.0 and probably also faster than USB 3.0 so the UltraBay should be both faster and better integrated than an external USB enclosure.
P.S. Anyone know if there's an external enclosure for the DVD drive that came out of the UltraBay? I'd rather have my HD in the UltraBay and be able to USB connect the DVD drive if, as and when (rarely) I should need it.

  • Mac Pro 3,1 - did my hard drive die? And what should I replace it with?

    Hi,
I inherited my late husband's 2008 Mac Pro (3,1 model) which had 2 x 500GB hard drives in it and 6GB of RAM. I filled the remaining hard drive bays with 1TB drives (I take a lot of video so needed the extra space). The boot drive was partitioned 50/50 in Boot Camp. I've upgraded the RAM to 10GB and I am currently running Lion.
Today, while doing something as innocuous as scrolling down a web page, the bottom half of my screen went black and the top half began flashing wildly. When it  stopped after several seconds, the mouse would not respond and I could not click on anything. If flashed a bit more, and then I had mouse control back but could not click on anything - web links, applications, finder. After waiting patiently but getting nowhere, I powered the machine down manually, and when I re-started it, it failed to boot. The chime sounded, the apple appeared, and the little revolving wheel, but at the point where the screen would normally go blue then display the desktop, it just went white. The fans spin, but otherwise it's very silent.
I tested with a second display, got the same issue. I tried booting to recovery mode but it went back to the white screen. I could start in target mode, and there were no issues with flickering screen, so I don't think it's the graphics card. Then I tried browsing to the hard drive over the network, but it wasn't showing on the PC network page, nor could I connect to it via the home theater system, which I can normally do as the streaming app launches on start-up. I am assuming this means the drive has failed? It's the original, and we bought the machine when they were new to the market, so is a good 5 years old. It contains not only the boot drive but my documents, photos, websites, selected videos, all of which are backed up on the Time Capsule, and I was in the process of uploading to cloud backup as well (although not very far along, due to data cap and slow international upload speeds). I had no warning it was about to do this, but then I guess sometimes you don't!
Assuming I need to replace the drive, would it be worth replacing it with an OWC Mercury Electra 480GB SSD in an Icy Dock sled? Or would that be overkill for such an old machine? Would getting a standard 7200 WD Caviar HDD or similar give me enough of a speed boost? Obviously I am rather enamoured with the idea of a blazing fast SSD but I'd have to import it (not available locally) so I don't want to shell out all that money unless it's really going to make a massive difference.
Is there anything else I would need to know about using an SSD over a HDD? I assume I would fire it up the normal way - install it, boot from my Snow Leopard install disc (I downloaded Lion from the App Store) format it, clean install SL, then re-update to Lion, then restore my Time Machine backup? Am I likely to experience any weird issues due to it being an SSD? I see talk online of firmware problems and something called TRIM that I don't know anything about. If it's most likely that I can install it and rock on as normal, then I'm pretty keen, but if there's a reasonable probability of it being temperamental, I probably wouldn't be willing to deal with that (and therefore go the HDD route instead). Therefore I am very keen to hear people's opinions and experiences.
Sorry for the terribly long ramble. The more I have researched this, the more questions it raises! All advice gratefully accepted. Thanks!

more than likely it is your video card. If it is ATI 2600XT, tell it bye-bye. The card is barely used at all in TDM or Safe Boot Mode. The 2600 and Lion and the issues with that card, even if it seems okay, is not.
Depending on Windows OS as to how it mounts and sees your Lion HFSX (there is a nice HFSX driver from Paragon, and an NTFS driver for Lion too)
480GB SSD is overkill for any system unless you are pushing CS6 2-3GB images and then for scratch. All you need for a boot drive is about 100GB.
If you have an SSD now, then 1) you need to do a full image backup and restore (regularly as maintenance), and 2) TRIM Enabler
Save Lion and you can always do a clean Lion install w/o going back to SL - but you might want to keep SL (dual boot) and handy if you run into anything you still need that required PowerPC/Rosetta
FBDIMM RAM dies, Amazon has $32 kits of 4GB. And having all 8 DIMM slots filled improves things. If you need or want to and feel 16GB isn't overkill.
SSD and issues are always possible. you should not just go along. not without a clone image. And you should have another drive w/ TRIM Enabler so that you can do a repair and "trim" what is needed.
Clone a system with CCC regularly. Bootable. And can also be used by Setup Assistant.
Install Lion over a heavily used SL system and there are likely remnants of old things that get in the way and left in there and not removed.

Whats the average temperature of my drive bay on my G5?
The drive bay is running at 1832 degrees F.
I just installed two new hitachi 2Tb drives in both the drive bay A and B.
They are independently at 94 degrees F and 104 degrees F.
The computer sounds lauder then before I installed the new drives.
However my fans are running at a normal 1800rpms.
I dont remember if my average drive bay was around 1800degrees F
If it is high is it because the drives are faulty?

  • Second Drive Bay Power Port Bad?

I am trying to install a second drive into my PPC G5 but it is not recognized. I realized that the power cable setup for the second SATA drive bay is bad at the port. I plugged the power cable from the First Dive bay into the port on the motherboard for the second Drive Bays power and nothing. It wouldnt boot. I am pretty certain the port for the Second Drive Bay Power is bad on the motherboard. Is there anything I can do other than having this replaced?

I assume you double checked the new drive as working on the known good power port. I have had a DOA from time to time. As the port for the bay comes out of the logic board I would also assume that it would not be worth replacing the logic board (unless you are handy yourself and could spot and fix a micro or a macro crack.
The other possibility is to pull a copy of your machine's service manual and see how the drive power was routed. Which exact PowerMac model is yours? I have a quad and I am pretty sure the power connectors plug into the bottom end of the board. I guess what I am getting at is this. You will want to double check that the board's port itself is bad by testing the PS/s output at the mains. Maybe you will get lucky and find out that the PS is the culprit not hte board as some models of G5/s have PS recalls on them. I have late 2005 and know I have a service manual on mine somewhere on a drive. Other wise Google your board and see how the power is channeled.

  • How do I move Macintosh HD drive from drive bay 4 to another drive bay

I have a drive in each bay.  One of the drives is being removed.  I'll have an open drive bay.  I Can't remember how Macintosh HD got in drive bay 4, but it's there.  If I move Macintosh HD from drive bay 4 to drive bay 1, will the Mac recognize it when I restart the computer?

Why move it to begin with? yes it will immediately boot from it. yes you can insure it will. there is no difference in where - maybe good idea to clone the system, have a bootable clone copy, maybe the time is right for a $100 120GB SSD now.
