W530 has a hard time sleeping

I have got a W530 2438CTO. Things seemed fine when I first got it but after a while after having kept it up to date with BIOS updates and and other hardware updates I found that it started having trouble going to sleep. Roughly once out of every 4 attempts to put it to sleep it will fall over instead of sleeping. The screen will black out and you cannot resume from this point but you can see the disk light flashing so I know its dooing something. It will do this for about 10 min and then it will completely power down, not sleep. When I turn it back on Windows complains it did not shutdown properly and do I want to boot into safe mode.
Has anyone else got this problem with the W530? I have logged a support call for this but as I expected they give me all sorts of silly tasks like Restoring my pc to a known last good state, which is not great cause I will loose a lot of things I don't want to loose a this stage. They also sugest re-updating the BIOS but I have already tried this so I know that doesn't help.

Had a similar problem on a W530 with Windows 7 - tried many solutions including Lenovo help desk, bios upgrades, all sorts of other internet solutions etc etc. Ultimately what resolved my sleep issue was simple ... go to - control panel - network & internet sharing- homegroup - leave the homegroup. Viola - no more issue with laptop going to sleep or waking up. Seems a patch likely turned on the homegroup - problem seems to be when trying to sleep the laptop couldn't as there was some background network homegroup activity. In my case leaving the homegroup was not an issue - not even sure how it got turned on.

  • Lightroom has a hard time with local adjustments:

Local adjustments: Spotting / Cloning / Healing Brush, Adjustmenst Brush, Graduated filter
I posted  the piece below as a response to thaehn’s post “Lightroom freezes on Dust Spot Removal” but I thought the topic is important enough to warrant its own post.
This in advance: I'm running WIN XP SP4 with all available patches; have 4 GB of RAM; have a dual-core processor at 3 GB.
Apart from my drive C, I have two internal hard drives in Raid 0 configuration (thus they show up as one drive). I also have an external hard drive that's in Raid 1 ( "mirroring') and is connected by fire-wire 400.
Yes, LR "freezes" when using the dust spot tool and also when using the adjustment brush or - but to a lesser degree - when using the grad filter.
My observation though is that it's not a true "freezing", because if I wait long enough LR starts working again. So when using these tools, LR gets extremely busy und just doesn't have enough resources left to respond to further commands right away - but it "stores" the comands and acts on them eventually.
If I turn on my task manager I observe the following when using these tools: the CPU gets extremely busy (i.e. the green bar is at 100%)  while the RAM usage is high but not to the max. The "freezes" occur when and as long the CPU works at 100%. If the CPU is below 100% LR responds sluggish and the response is normal again when eventually the CPU usage is at 0%.
Also, in my observation, this behaviour of LR is compounding, i.e. the wait-times for my CPU to get back to 0 are increasing, the longer I work with these tools or the more photos I work on. Re-starting LR does not bring change: the behaviour establishes itself when using the tools again. It is as if LR needs to do some work in the background and that this background work piles up the longer I work in LR.
I am not a software or hardware specialist, so the following observations are somewhat subjective and not really quantifiable.
In Photoshop I observed a similar behaviour (although never as bad) when working on files of 500 MB and above. It was particularly bad when working on photos residing on my external RAID 1 hard drive. I had a hunch that it might have to do with the reading and writing from a drive that a)  is external and b)  is  in RAID 1. It is known that RAID 1 has slower writing (and also reading) speeds than RAID 0 (or no RAID at all). So in Photoshop I managed to cut down on the unresponsiveness by moving large files to my internal RAID 0 hard drive and working from there.
From this experience I come to the assumption that some of the "busy-ness" in LR (or of the CPU) is due to reading/writing to/from the hard drive.
To test this assumption for LR, I moved some photos from my external (RAID 1) to my internal (RAID 0) hard drive and did some "intensive" work: first some "fancy" lens correction, then a few grad filters, and a "final touch" with the adjustment brush. I thought that LR could handle these tasks somewhat better when the photos were on the internal drive - so some of the "sluggishness" or " freezing" is due to the reading/writing from/to the hard drive.
Acually I cannot explain why this should be so: In my naivete I thought LR writes everything only into the catalog (?), that - by the way - is on my internal RAID 0 drive.
I think it would be good if Adobe could look into this and maybe give us some recommendations, just as they do for Photoshop by saying that the scratch disk should be on a different drive than Photoshop.
But it seems also that local adjustments - spotting, adj. brush. etc - are a very high "number-crunching" business for LR - independent of where the photo is located on the drive. (Interestingly the grad filter is not as bad as the adjustment brush). The clone-tool in Photoshop hardly registers on my CPU and if at all only with a very short spike, while the clone tool in LR sends the CPU through the roof for 10 to 30 seconds- even when the photo in question is on the internal drive.
I'm sure loots of people will now tell me that this is due to the difference between pixel-based adjustment and non-pixel-based ones. OK, I acknowledge that. But still ...
It seems some guys are still in denial about this (or maybe they have two quad processors and 16 GB of RAM):
But it's a fact: LR has a hard time with localized adjustments. There must be by now 100's of complaints to that respect, and that can't be dismissed by blaming it on the hardware specs alone.
I just hope Adobe is working on that.
LR3 is a fantastic program that I would not want to work without. Often I have to work on a lot of photos with a very tight deadline. Without LR it would be impossible.
    Thank you,
    ErnstK

    You are right Samoreen.
I posted my above message in July 2010 and this topic has been re-opened by Adobe under the thread Lightroom 3.3 Performance Feedback
I think it would be best if everybody would post their concerns only under this thread.
Otherwise we'd have two different threads for the same issue.
So let's close this one here.

My wife is color deficient and has a hard time with the font colors in the phone log and messaging. Is there any way to change color or background and does Apple have plans to correct this?

There are some minor settings in Accessibility that you can look at, however it really isn't much for color changing. As far as what Apple might have in mind, we are not Apple here, we are users like you. It is against the terms of service to speculate what Apple might have in mind. If you want to provide feedback to Apple, that is done here: www.apple.com/feedback and click on the appropriate link.

        Hello sharbare57!
I definitely want to help your husband fall in love with his device! As rcschnoor mentioned, you can definitely purchase a new phone at full retail any time here: http://bit.ly/nD0WuY Though I'm sure we can get to the bottom of your husbands concerns with his current device prior to making another purchase.
What model phone does he have? What features is he struggling with. I look forward to helping!
    Thanks!

  • Aperture 2.0 has a hard time closing.

I deleted all files to Aperture 1.6 and installed the trial. I imported my photos from disk. All thumbnail generation was completed.
Aperture 2.0 stalls on shut down. I am showing activity in the activity window, but not anything major. I am forced to force quit the application.
    Anyone else with this problem.
    Thanks, Ed

    hmmm
Be interesting to see if it's still doing something... that's a lot longer than I saw.
What if you open up a terminal window and type:
    sudo fs_usage
and enter your password when prompted.
See if there's a bunch of stuff flying by that indicates Aperture is writing to the disk?

  • Battery of a 4 week old macbook (2012) pro 13''. It reaches 100% after a hard time but fall down to 99% after few seconds. What is the problem?

Why does my newly bought Macbook pro 13'' 2012 battery has a hard time reaching 100%. It reaches to 100% with a longer charging but then falls down to 99% in a few seconds time. I have heard and read about calibration. But I think that the computer is young (only 4 weeks old) to be calibirated. What might be the issue here? This problem started just recently.

When my MBP is plugged into the wall (when I am near a plug, I usually have it plugged in) it will stop charging at 100% and drop slowly to 95% before auto-recharging to 100%.
Saves the circuits from charging all of the time.
I do run it on battery at least once a month down to 40%.

  • Canon HF R400 Chromatic Aberration and Blocking Zooming, Hard Time Focusing, LCD Display GUI

An otherwise nice cam for the price point especially end-of-the model year. I'm going to keep for primarily shooting youtube collectibles in a controlled environment of clamp lights with diffusers and either Auto White Balance or 'P' mode.
    1. In my optical zoom tests (it's nice there's four speed options. I use number 3. The cam exhibits a lot of chromatic aberration which is purple, white ,or even green fringing around the subject matter. I shot of a telephone pole transformer box in bright light, the sky behind it, tree branches and snow on hedges in winter.
    2. On a couple occasions when I zoomed in from about estimated 100-150yds the sky exhibited large blocky pixels for a second. But if I took it to an amusement park to shoot roller coasters I'd hold my breath for both reasons.
    3. It has a hard time adjusting focus when zoomed in even from a close 1-6ft distance to record detail of collectibles or leaves on bushes etc.
    4. The amount of display items on the LCD GUI is too much. Even the cheap Samsung F90 has a button to turn it off. Am I missing something. I read the 197pg PDF manual. Is there a way to turn off or at least reduce the number of items I don't need to see in order to actually shoot a video/picture? In still life tests. I had to take photos with the cam. Look at them. Then adjust. Then repeat. Just to see the composition. Kind of like in the day when pro photographers would take Polaroids prior to the film shot.
Note: If I'm allow to post youtube links or at least the titles of the videos to demonstrate in the near future when I upload examples of the Likes and Dislikes of my purchase I'd like to know from a Canon moderator (thanx in advance).

    Hi ElectroT2!
    Thanks for posting.
Chromatic aberration is not always something that can be completely eliminated.  It most often appears when shooting a subject in the foreground that highly contrasts with the background  Chromatic aberration is caused by a lens having a different refractive index for different wavelengths of light.  Because each hue in the spectrum is not focused at a single point, colored halos or fringing appears.  There are two types of chromatic aberration:  longitudinal, where different wavelengths are focused at different distances from the lens, and lateral, where different wavelengths are focused at different positions on the focal plane.
Are you zooming optically or digitally when you see the "blockiness" in the image?  If digital zoom is being used, it would explain why you see it.  Digital zoom appears as the light blue area of the zoom bar.  When you zoom digitally, the image is basically cropped and expanded more and more as you zoom.  Because of this, the image quality will deteriorate the more you zoom in.  You can select the type of zoom used in the settings menu under [Zoom Type].
Autofocus may not work well on the following subjects:
    - Reflective surfaces
    - Subjects with low contrast or without vertical lines
    - Fast moving subjects
    - Through wet windows
    - Night scenes
You can always adjust the focus manually by selecting [ Focus] in the menu.  You can then touch a subject that appears inside the frame, then touch and hold to adjust focus.  When it is focused where you want it, then touch [ X ] to lock the focus.  Something that may help you is when you are focusing manually, you can touch inside the frame to automatically focus on that spot to help you with the adjustment process.
As for the onscreen displays you are describing, they cannot be disabled so that only the subject appears on the LCD.  You can, however, keep them from being displayed when the camcorder is connected to an external monitor.  The setting is in the menu under the tab.  It is called [Output Onscreen Displays].

Sorry you misunderstood my question let me rephrase my question. I was telling you the color and make of my phone and was wanting to know if their was anybody having any issues with this as well. It could be a problem with iphone 5 or just an issue with mine alone.I was trying to see if their were any troubleshooting steps I could try to rectify the problem I am having.

  • I am trying to get space on an external hard drive which has some old time machine back up files that I do not need but can not eliminate, even by going into the time machine, clicking on the backup file to be eliminated and using the drop down eliminate

I am trying to get space on an external hard drive which has some old time machine back up files that I do not need but can not eliminate, even by going into the time machine, clicking on the backup file to be eliminated and using the drop down menu with the gear box symbol to eliminate

I cannot find this 300GB "Backup" in the Finder, only in the Storage info when I check "About This Mac".
You are probably using Time Machine to backup your MacBook Pro, right? Then the additional 300 GB could be local Time Machine snapshots.  Time Machine will write the hourly backups to the free space on your hard disk, if the backup drive is temporarily not connected. You do not see these local backups in the Finder, and MacOS will delete them, when you make a regular backup to Time Machine, or when you need the space for other data.
See Pondini's page for more explanation:   What are Local Snapshots?   http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
I have restarted my computer, but the information remains the same. How do I reclaim the use of the 300GB? Why is it showing up as "Backups" when it used to indicate "Photos"? Are my photos safe on the external drive?
You have tested the library on the external drive, and so your photos are save there.
The local TimeMachine snapshot probably now contains a backup of the moved library.  Try, if connecting your Time Machine drive will reduce the size of your local Time Machine snapshots.

My mac has been locking up while it's asleep. This has happened 5 times in the last week or so. I know it still has power and I can get the caps lock light to come on. Moving mouse or pressing keys on keyboard has no affect. I have to force it to shut off and then restart. Any ideas? Thanks.

  • Has anyone enabled time machine using a linksys router and external hard drive? And if so how?

Has anyone enabled time machine using a link sys router and external hard drive? And if so how?  I have a Linksys E4200 wireless router with a usb port on it.  I also have a Western Digital Elements 1TB external hard drive.  I would like to be able to use this hard drive with time machine.  Has anyone done so and if so how can I do so?

You might get some responses, but we don't see many Linksys users on an Apple forum so it may be awhile before you see an answer.
It might be useful to point out that Apple does not even support Time Machine backups to the USB port on their own AirPort Extreme wireless router, so we may be heading down a very slippery slope here.
I've tried Time Machine backups on an AirPort Extreme router a number of times in the past. It's just not reliable. Works for awhile, then has corruption problems. Or has corruption issues immediately. I once went a month or so and thought I had it nailed, then got smacked with a corrupted set of backups again.
But, I guess you never know. It might work on the Linksys. If you decide to try this, I would suggest that you have another backup plan in place for your important data.
Hope that some Linksys users will respond so we can all learn.

I'm trying to install a Citrix XenApp for work purposes and am having a hard time. The message "The installer has insufficient priveleges to this directory: C:\Program Files (x86) \Mozilla Firefox \Plugins \resource. The installation cannot continue. Log on as administrator or contact your system administrator." I am using a Toshiba Satellite laptop and am the only user and administrator as well. I have read other Firefox support articles and google answers but nothing has resolved this issue. Please help! Be detailed and visual if possible

There are no BIOS settings, because Macs don't have a BIOS. I don't use Parallels, but I assume it has simulated BIOS settings. You'd have to consult its documentation to find out how to change them.

  • Does Time Capsule hard drive sleep?  Do USB hard drives connected sleep?

Hello - I have an AEBS (1st generation) with a NewerTech miniStack connected to it. The miniStack never sleeps, even after applying the new firmware and software yesterday.
So now I am thinking about buying a Time Capsule, but have questions about hard drive sleeping.
    2 questions:
    1. Does the Time Capsule internal hard drive ever sleep?
    2. Does an external USB hard drive connected to a Time Capsule ever sleep?
    Thanks in advance.

This is a copy of ONEof the keys  in the registry I changed  as told by Apple support today. I also have changed others as instructed by GEAR  software support to manually delete GEAR drivers (that I had installed but couldn't delete some of the others  they mentioned from Windows system 32. Then some bright spark at work told me I need the Gear drivers so  I downloaded the software and installed again.
Sorry, just this minute went to insert image  and it is giving me a message saying this sort of content  is not allowed?.
