W530 Replacing W520?

Since the new W530 is coming out, will the older W520 still be out for a while, or is it being discontinued?  I'm planning to buy a W520 soon, and do not like the keys on the W530 very much.
The keyboard on the W520 is a lot more professional looking, and is the only laptop I have ever seen that has the desktop style keys.  The keyboard on the W530 makes the computer look cheap.

Even if the power/heat issues will be solved (doubtfully) http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/W-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/W530-fan-noise-intolerable/m-p/898013/highligh..., i'd stick to the w520 until much improved Ivy Bridge machines will be out and tested.
From many angles I consider the w520 a better machine than w530: Besides the above deal breaker (power and noise!), the w520 has eSATA and full-size DP, deeper blacks and thus almost 20% better contrast, traditional KB... all gone from the w530, which in return is marginally faster at the top rung (but 50% worse where it matters - in the low power mode).
Actually I'm now looking for w520s to replace the w530 lot my lab has ordered. Mitch Gusat

Is it possible to replace the keyboard on a W520 with an equivalent, backlit W530 keyboard?

It is not possible to do a direct hardware replacement. The bezel is different and the scan codes for the keyboard (which are supported by the BIOS) are different on the keyboards.

  • Replacing W520 Keyboard

I bought a W520 couple of years ago from north america and the keyboard come in the English layout. I'm already planning to switch the keyboard with the Arabic layout one since i'm sick of having to put stickers and having them peeling of every time. I was thinking also since i'm getting a new keyboard why not get the backlit one that on the W530. I know Lenovo most of the times have some stupid restriction regarding replacement parts from a previous experience with the wifi card. So did anyone tried to upgrade the keyboard before, and if it wont work is getting another W520 keyboard with the Arabic layout gonna work for me also ?

The 530 kb won't fit the 520 and vice versa.  This was hashed to death about a year ago on all sorts of forums.  Some tried deperately to mod and make work, both ways, but with no success.
For some good news, here your kb @ $35 new!  Just yank out the old and drop this right in.

  • Lenovo ThinkPad W530 replacement keyboard

    Hi,
I am looking to buy a replacement keyboard for my Lenovo ThinkPad W530 notebook.
I'm looking for a US English keyboard.
Can anyone recommend an online retailer? I am having trouble with the Lenovo website itself.
    Thankyou,
    Steven.

    Hey there burrows,
As an option, you can always contact the technical support line and request a parts only order, and order the keyboard directly. To contact the support center you'll need to call 0800-5004618. Make sure you have your serial number, machine type and model number handy when you call. I hope this helps!

  • Help requested from Lenovo Admins- W530 replacement pain

    Dear Lenovo admins,
I have the same issue as several posts here where only DIMM slot 1 and 3 work and anything in 2 and 4 does not POST.  Also I have couple of dead pixels.  I called tech support first on 1-Oct and they gave me a Case number telling me to call CS and ask for a Type 3 request.  I called on 1-Oct and after a hour wait got a CS person who told me that my request was forwarded to the Concerns/Billing Department and to wait while he transferred me to them.  After an additional 3 hours of waiting I used another phone to call CS who told me to hang up the other phone since Concerns would call me back in 3-5 days.  All along I was asking if they would call me to figure out the next steps and to send me a box for the return since I had gotton rid of my origianl box.  I was told multiple times the Concerns/Billing would take care of sending a return box with label.  When I didn't hear back after three days, I checked again with CS who told me that they would call.  On day 5 I called again and the CS person said give it until Monday 8-Oct.  When I didn't hear anything yesterday, I call at the end of the day and was told the return is being worked on and I would get a call no later than today.  I also confirmed that they would send me a box for the return.  Today I called and I'm still not sure where things are since I got the same story of return is being worked on and now someone will call me or email me.  This time however was told that they would not send me a box and I would have to contact Tech support since Tech support does not deal with Lenovo CS.
This experience is not acceptable to me.  It should be a simple matter of getting a call with the next steps, ie box sent for return with label and an eta of the new delievery.  I have at least 10 other Thinkpads/Lenovos and this is the first time I am dealing with really annoying and not impowered CS.  I would really appreciate a note from the admins on who I need to actally contact to get things done.  What I would like is...
    1. Speak to someone who has authority
    2. Have a return box and label shipped to me
    3. Recieve an ETA of the replacement.
I don't think I am asking too much here.
    Thanks.
    Paul

The W530 doesn't use a tray like the older thinkpads did. I only use the rubber rails.  Make sure that you use the right rails, there are 2 sizes, one fot 9.5 mm and one ofr 7 mm drives. I have two W530's and the rails work fine in both, they hold the drive firmly and I've never had a drive lossen up.

  • WARRANTY. mSATA disappears. W530 replaced. mSATA replaced. STILL PROBLEMS.

Rcvd this Lenovo W530, 2436CTO. Unit had DVD issues (Drive would go to sleep and never wake up). Lenovo sent me a brand new laptop from China. Unit worked great for about a month when my mSATA drive crapped out. The Lenovo Solution Center indicated my 16GB Sandisk drive was bad. I notified Lenovo with the Error code generated and they sent me a new mSATA. I installed it and reinstalled the ExpressCache SW (software). Everything once again was well with the world UNTIL....during normal operation my screen and mouse locked up for about 30 seconds, disk light was on and after the 30 seconds, my control came back but my ExpressCache drive, the sandisk mSATA was gone...not even in computer management...simply gone. Upon opening an elevated command window and running ECCMD -INFO I see the HFS drive is NOT MOUNTED. Several seconds later it shows **ERROR** ECCmd Requested device is not available : 2 --- NOW IF I reboot (restart), during POST I am advised that the mSATA drive is not available and to press ESC to continue. BUT IF I do a HARD REBOOT (shut completely down and then turn back on) POST continues normally and the mSATA drive is found and ExpressCache starts working again. I confirm this by using the ECCMD command. HOWEVER at some time during the use of the machine the same thing happens. It is extremely repeatable with the SW I have installed.
For some reason the BIOS is reporting that the mSATA is no longer available until a hard reboot.
Any suggestions out there besides buying a SSD HDD and throwing the mSATA drive away?
Is it possible that the original mSATA drive went bad causing some interfacing component on the MoBo to become defective? (thermal runaway) OR something screwed up in the ESCD (?) somewhere in the low level area of the BIOS? I am lost, frustrated, and very discouraged at my 1700 dollar apparent blunder and dont relish trying to explain the issue to a tech. Could a clean install have anything to do with it? Is it possible the O/S is telling the BIOS to disable the mSATA drive because of a perceived conflict? (IRQ conflict, etc.)

Most 16GB mSATA SSDs included in ThinkPads for use as "file cache" are not of good quality. So, yes, they can go bad pretty quickly.
On top of that, I share Thors.Hammer's view that the "mSATA SSD-based file cache" approach is questionable.
If you spend that much money on a serious workstation notebook such as W530, try not to be cheap on any component. I would use either a mSATA SSD or a 2.5" SSD (128GB typically) as my boot/OS/programs/VMs drive. My second drive would be a 2.5" HDD if you need up to 1TB for storage, or a 2.5" SSD if you can live with 256GB or 512GB.
In your case, you can yank out that puny, low-quality mSATA SSD and, if you like, replace it with a "large enough" mSATA SSD by Crucial or Mushkin, and not use it as a "file cache". I wish Samsung would make mSATA SSDs of the same calibre as their 830 and 840 Pro SSDs, but Crucial will do fine.

  • Replace W520 Sony Optiarc AD-7710H DVD Burner with Sony Optiarc BD-5750H Blu-ray Burner?

I am planning on replacing the DVD burner which shipped with my W520 (4270CTO) with a Blu-ray burner.  Evidently not all W520s ship with the same drives.

  • W530 - Replacing HDD w/ SSD - Installing Windows 8

    Hi All,
My W530 will arrive next week and I'm pretty new to upgrading it myself, so I'm sorry if this sounds repeatative.
    Windows 8 Pro 64
    500GB HDD 7200rpm
I have already purchased the Samsung 830 256GB SSD and plan to replace the HDD with it. Also, already purchased an adapter for the optical drive for my HDD to go in. No questions regarding that.
My questions deal with installing Windows 8 Pro 64 onto the SSD. Most of the articles I have read talk about Windows 7, so I'm not sure if there is a difference.
    Questions:
    - Do I do a clean install or create a factory backup with the one installed on my HDD?
    - Where do I get a clean install for Windows 8?
    - If I do a backup, do I put the backup on disks or usb drive? I've read some forums that say Windows 8 can't be put on disks?
    - Any step-by-step guides for Windows 8 that people have seen?
Like I said, I'm pretty new to this and want to do it right.
    Thanks!

I'm not from Lenovo, and still sorting this myself...
3: here's the procedure for making recovery media: Methodology to create Recovery Media and reload a Lenovo system with Microsoft Windows 8 preload
It wants a USB flash drive as the target.  Recovery media gets you back to the as-shipped, right out of the box state.
Backup and restore are a different deal.  That gets you back to the state of the machine when the backup was taken.  Backups can be stored on HDD or other external media, and on CD/DVD media (according to the options offered, anyway) but that would take a whole bunch of optical disks.
One uses the oddly-named Windows 7 File recovery tools to save the backup image and create a repair CD/DVD that contains the actual recovery tools.  I've tested this myself on an upated 7->8 machine.  Burned a repair CD and saved a full drive image to external USB HDD.  Restored to a new HDD and all was in place and working.
As I said, I'm still sorting this, so please double (triple!) check anything I've said before doing anything non-reversible.

  • Thinkpad W510 and W530 accessories compatibility

    Hello all,
From a previous post, I found that accessories such as the power adapter and docking station will not work between the Lenovo Thinkpad W510 and W540 models. Instead, are they compatible between a W510 and W530 and if not, how about a W510 and W520?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

No. W530 and W520 use the same docks and AC adapters; W510 uses different ones. All 3 have the same shape of battery, but the W530 needs one with an additional chip. A W530 battery will work in any of them. Nothing fits a W540.  The only difference in the dock on the T510 (vs. T520, T530) is the AC jack is keyed for the 170W adapter.

Yes, the W530 will boot from the USB CD ROM
Yes it can boot from USB CDROM but there are a few caveats to watch for. On the W520, a USB CDROM fails to load any recovery system that uses WindowsPE. The only way around this is to use an optical drive attached to the eSATA port.
Your premise is incorrect.. A USB CD-ROM will boot properly using either of the USB 2.0 ports on the W520. The eSata/USB 2.0 port on the USB will be used in USB 2.0 by the device. The W520 USB 3.0 ports need a driver that is not supported by WPE and not enabled properly in the BIOS.
The W530 has native USB 3.0 support and will support booting the system in WPE. I believe that the original system concerned the W530.

  • Constant electical buzzing noise when off. Normal?

I have a W520 that makes a soft electrical buzzing hum, kind of like a florescent light bulb.  It does this only when I turn off the machine, and the hum changes pitch every 2 seconds, but it is constant.  The only way to get it to stop humming is if I turn on the machine, or remove and reinstall the battery.
The computer is new.  I bought it direct from Lenovo and just received it on 7/14/11.  It has been making this noice since I got it, but because this is my very first laptop, I don't know if the noise is normal.
I called Lenovo tech support and upgraded my drivers as advised, but this hasn't solved the problem, so I was told to call Post Sales Department on Monday to see if I can get a replacement W520.
Has anyone ever experienced this with their W520?  Is this electrical humming noise normal?  I have confirmed that it is not a fan noise, or a hard drive noise. There is no movement or vibration in the machine, it just likes to hum all the time when it's supposed to be off.  Our IT guy at work thinks it may have a bad connection somewhere that is causing capacitor noise.
    My W520 is a model 4270.  Core i7-2720QM, Quadro 1000M, 8 GB SDRAM/500 GB HDD, running Windows 7.
    Thanks.

Thanks.  I got a return authorization and shipped the computer back to Lenovo today.  The post sales dept is going to give me a refund when they get the computer, and once I get the refund, I'll have to order a new W520.
Hopefully, the new W520 will not have the buzzing noise problem.
I'm really glad that the post sales dept allowed me to return the computer instead of having me send it to a depot for repairs.  I wish they could have just exchanged it for a new one, but because it's over 21 days from the order date, they have to give me a refund instead.

  • Reverse question Can the W530 chiclet keyboard be installed in a W520

    Hello,
I had the opportunity to try out the T530 / W530 chiclet keyboard and really liked it
I have bit of a reverse question
Can a new chiclet type keyboard be installed in a W520 and would the bios have to be changed
    for key mapping etc..
Thanks in advance for your help

It won't fit due to a slightly different surrounding bezel.  And even if it did fit (or you replaced the bezel which would allow it to fit), then BIOS wouldn't support it anyway - key mapping problems.

  • W520 Motherboard replacement

    Hi All,
About 3 weeks ago my laptop suddenly shutdown and I took it to get repaired and it turns out the motherboard crapped out and needed to be replaced. Since my warranty ran out 6 months ago, they quoted for a new motherboard at $1,200.
Of course I cannot pay this kind of cash for a mere motherboard. My question is, is there any third party where I can get a w520 motherboard on the cheap?
    Thank you!

What is the failure that has necessitated the repair requiring a new motherboard? It's really not worth spending $1200 on a system that is 18 months old. A new W530 (or a refurb W520 on the outlet site) would cost only a bit more in my opinion.

  • W520 battery in a W530?

My a few months ago my W520 blew up 4 days after the 3 year international NBD warranty expired (and lenovo told me they would not help me), so had to buy a W530.  The PSU from the 520 works on the 530, as does the dock, but the batteries wont charge.  The W530 will quite happily run on the W520 batteries, and it recognises them, but wont charge them.
Why lenovo didnt make it backwardly compatible amazes me.
Anyway, the question is, does anyone know how I can charge my W520 batteries, so them I can use them in the W530?  E.g. supply a circit diagram for a charger, or know of another sneaky method to trick the 530 into charging them?  The two batteries are copletely unused (I never use the W520 on battery), with perhaps 10 cycles, so are basically new.  One is the 9cell 55++, and the other is the 6 cell 55+.
I need additional batteries purely becaue the unit + batteries is heavy to carry (have to walk with it 1h a day), so I leave batteries & spare PSU in the offie, home etc.
    Any ideas welcome.

I tried my T410's 55++ battery in my W530 and it wouldn't turn on with the battery alone, when plugged in I got an error.  The External Charger use a 90 watt PSU which is the one used by most ot the T-serices (T410, T420, T430, T510, T520, T530, ect.)  I am thinking of getting an externatl charger to keep my batteries charged since I have multiple 90 watt PSU's and I'm buying at least 2 additional batteries, which I'm going to get off Amazon as their less that 80 USD versus the Lenovo price aroound 120 USD.
