W530 Updates Through Windows Update

Quick question about applying updates to my W530:
Is it ok to run updates for hardware (graphics, screen, etc.) through Windows Update as they become available? Or should I avoid this and run them through Lenovo's update tools?
I'm a little skeptical about the graphics card(s) updates since reading some posts on these forums about trouble with updating and Nvidia Optimus
Thanks!

'morning...
as a general rule, i update hardware drivers using ThinkVantage System Update and double-check against the proper driver matrix, not via Windows Update. one notable exception was the Win7 video driver for my T60p as there never was a Lenovo driver.
in case you didn't have it, here's the W530 matrix: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/research/hints-or-tips/detail.page?&DocID=HT073837

  • Waiting for SP1 to come through Windows Vista Update?

    Hi:
I have been waiting for SP1 to make an appearance through Windows Update and am still waiting. I checked out the knowledge base and checked all the problem drivers to see if I had any of the components.
I don't have any of them, nor do I have any hidden updates that I have opted not to install. Is there anything else I could possibly check? I checked all my drivers in device manager and all are updated.
    Thanks!

    Hello Lisa
I know it sounds now stupid but what is your problem? Maybe I understand English not so good but I didnt find any concrete question. I understand that you are waiting for SP1 and what now?
To be honest you should not install SP1 at the moment. At the moment SP1 is not supported by Toshiba and if you will have some problems nobody can help you. SP1 stuff can (muss not) have some negative influence on different drivers or tools. Toshiba will fix this and offer updates but just when SP1 is official supported.
If you have all latest drivers it is enough. Leave it as it is.

I cannot access Content Library in iMovie - Content Library doesn't show on the iMovie screen and is greyed out when accessed through "windows" tab at the top. Also unable to update the projects/events (a suggested solution for a similar question). I haven't had this issue before, I have always used the content library on the screen but haven't used this for about a month. How can I make the Content Library available?

Thanks so much! I am backing up the entire computer now with an external hard drive - this should be fine right? And surely if I am backing up the whole computer these projects/videos will be backed up too? I wasn't sure how to do this any other way and I am clearly not great with tech issues. Once this is done and I am sure my projects/videos are safe I will do the delete and reinstall bit. Thanks for taking the time to help

  • Warning: Microsoft may push IE9 today through Windows updates

FYI - Our sysadmins are telling me that IE9 may get pushed through Windows updates today:
    http://www.tekgoblin.com/2011/03/21/ie9-set-to-release-today-via-windows-update/
I just checked the relevant places, which do not yet reference IE9.
MOS NOTE 1072324.1Is Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) Certified With E-Business Suite Release 11i? [ID 1072324.1]
MOS NOTE:285218.1 - Recommended Browsers for Oracle E-Business Suite 11i
MOS NOTE:290807.1 - Deploying Sun JRE (Native Plug-in) for Windows Clients in Oracle E-Business Suite 11i
And according to Steven Chan, as of Ferbruary 23rd, 2011 Microsoft IE9 has not been officially released, nor is it currently supported:
    http://blogs.oracle.com/stevenChan/2011/02/win7-sp1-ebs.html
I am about to test it anyway, in case the worst happens and it gets pushed to all our PCs. Worst case we tell Users to only user
Firefox, but some will try to use IE anyway.

My point is that IE9 is being pushed out by Microsoft and Oracle Apps DBA's may be getting a flurry of calls tommorow with users who can't get in. Unless you can tell your Desktop Admin's to find an install the IE9 blocker tool if it is available (our own network admins are working on this now). Note: IE9 willl never install on XP - since Microsoft designed it to NOT be compatible with XP. So XP-based machines are safe.
I found out a few things just testing for compatibility. At list in my environment: 11.5.10.2 on 11gR2 on Solaris 10 update 8 for Sparc, and Java Update 24, non-Forms pages are fine, launching forms took a couple of tries, had to click "Recover Webpage" and try 3-4 times, but was finally able to launch forms and after that they seem to be ok. This was the 64-bit version if IE9 on a core 2 duo PC with Windows 7 Professional. On my laptop which is 32-bit and has 32-Bit Windows 7 Ultimate, I have not yet had luck launching forms in IE9 despite trying compatibility view, open new pages in a new browser window, and various other tricks that might work. So overall just based on this sample of 2 machines, it is not a smooth/ easy birth into IE9, but if/when you can launch forms once, it seems ok.

  • Unable to delete songs from IPOD except through Windows Explorer

    hello,
I have a first gen 1 gb Ipod Nano ver Ver 1.3.1 modem #
    ma352ll.
About a week ago i tried to free up some space on my ipod by removing some songs. Since I began using my ipod I have just felt more comfortable manually managing my songs. So what i would normally do is simply delete the song from the music folder on my ipod and it is usually gone. (I know that simply deleting from a playlist does not delete from ipod). When I tried deleting some songs I found that the available space on my ipod did not change and obviously could nto add any more songs. When I went into windows explorer, in the music folder for my ipod, I i found the songs I wanted to delete (they were large files because they were podcasts). When I deleted the file from windows explorer the space was freed up on my ipod.
I updated itunes and restored my ipod. I am not using itunes 7. Today I tried adding 7 podcasts to my ipod manually thru itunes and only 5 show up in my music folder, however, i can find all 7 in windows explorer AND all 7 in the playlists I added them to. They play perfectly fine when I play them, but obviously if I tried to delete the 2 suspect files from my playlist they would still be hidden somewhere on my ipod and I can only delete them through windows explorer.
I am not sure what to do at this point, is there anybody who can shed some light on what I am doing wrong or if this is a known issue with itunes and and 1st gen nanos. It's getting annoying to have to play each file in winamp from windows explorer to find the song titles I want to delete and keep the rest. The folders show up as F00, F001, etc... and the songs show up as QVRD.mp3. I havew to play the file QVRD.mp3 throguh winamp so the name of the song comes up so I know if that is the hidden file or one of the others thats how up in itunes that I want to keep. Any ideas out there?

    Try:

Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync/delete all music and resync

  • A View Through Windows 8.1.1

    A View Through Windows 8.1.1
There above opens fine for me; sorry, didn't expect anyone would have difficulty w/ it.
Windows 8.1.1 or Windows 8.1 Update or KB2919355
Call it what you like, a rose by any other name is, still, a rose.
And this has brought some pretty rosy stuff to Win 8.1.  8.1 delivered a plethora of cool things to the initial Windows 8.0 platform but, I am not here, right now, to discuss that gold mine but, rather its Update, Win8.1.1. This small yet,
packed Update comes or will as an Auto Update via WU.  It installs quickly and easily.
Basically, its only requirement is having Windows 8.1 in place… an 8.0 device must be Upgraded to Windows 8.1 and then on to this Update.
Now, even though 8.1 responded to User feedback and requests, 8.1.1 has tried to take that endeavor, even, further.
Much of that is in regard to making the OS more intuitive, more familiar and more mouse friendly, catering to non-Touch environments and to have some things more overt.
A good portion of the Update impact on both Consumers and Businesses whilst some are value items specifically for enterprise.
Firstly, let’s address the ‘common ground’ and then look at the assets to or for businesses.
I will not delve into extreme details for this discussion but, will provide links which, will give you the full story.
However, the links go to the usual, sterile, propaganda and although, certainly, informative & enlightening, not the personal perspective that I would like to share, at this time.
I write in several tech forums, ergo, I have seen what people like, dislike or want.
8.1 does, indeed, indulge what people have been expressing.
It, also, I feel, helps make people enjoy using Store APPs more and helps draw then into the world of APPs.
A major part of the Update is in regard to APP handling and usage.
To me it’s mostly about APPs but, there are some other items so let’s tackle them, first.
May seem like little things but, sometimes doesn’t take much to make people happy.
And this does destroy the suggestion that MS doesn’t listen to End Users or care what they think or say.
On Start there, now, are Power & Search icons.  There are Rt Clk menus attached to the Start Tiles.
There’s a Search box on the ALL Applications screen.  Back to the Store APPS enhancements because I suggest, this is the, really, cool bit.
Some people have struggled over using the Switcher Bar, opening APPs, closing APPs and positioning and maneuvering or manipulating them.
Well, this is where things get exciting… NOW, the Store APPs can sit on the Task Bar
and they can be pinned.  NOW, they can be closed or minimised with a bar at the top of them.
NOW, as many as four can be enjoy with greater flexibility than ever before.
All of this making the OS easier and more similar to what people are accustom to having and doing.
And having APP icons permanently available on the task Bar is great since, any that are used consistently to get shut down by the OS on the Switcher Bar after a period of time. Nor does one have to pop out the Switcher Bar to access an APP.
Lastly, to carry the familiar Desktop experience across ALL screens, the Task Bar shows on every screen, even if it is a Store APP, Start or ALL Applications.
There are, also, a number of things that are not quite so obvious or superficial, some under-the-covers stuff, plus things relative to business/enterprise issues.
One thing having positive impact right across the board is support for low cost hardware.
With Windows 8.1 Update there is a continuance to fine-tune Windows performance to deliver a great user experience on the broad range of Windows devices. Specifically, with memory and disk space optimization in Windows 8.1 Update we now
enable Windows to run on even lower cost hardware with as low as 1GB of RAM and a 16GB hard drive.
So you ca see it is possible to convey the message that using the OS can, now, thanks to this Update be, even more enjoyable and appealing than it, already, was.
Things easier to find or see and done in established, already known ways, methods and comfort zones.
End Users will like what Win8.1.1 brings and offers them… so spread the word.
Now, for some important ‘bullets’ provided by the Update that IT Pros should know about and be able to enthusiastically impart, particularly, to thrilled Enterprise Users on top of the aspects, already, mentioned that are for everyone.
    >> Improvements to take advantage of new hardware innovation and support the latest devices, such as devices based on 64 bit Baytrail™ processors.
    >> Extended Mobile Device Management (MDM)
    >> Easier app deployment and management is app side loading
    And, also, exciting
licensing changes come with Windows 8.1 Update.
The big caveat here, the meaningful take-away for y’all, in my view, is there are many desirable facets contained in the Windows 8.1.1 Update.
It is a strength to know this content so it can be transmitted to End Users both, Consumer and Enterprise customers and clients.
There are things for which business folks will be grateful.
There are things that make the User Experience nicer for anyone and everyone.
KB2919355 may be small but, in my view, it packs a big punch.

    The view from here, Drew:
Reading around the edges of the error message, are you seriously trying to find things of merit in the spring update?  They seem pretty few and far between to me.  800 MB (er, 200, er, who knows) for what?  a few dozen bugfixes?
If you know of something of substance in the update, please share, because I'm not finding much.
Why has there been so much hype about this version?  It was "leaked", then it has been getting press like what you're trying to show here.  Isn't the hype actually supposed to come with some substance as well?  Where is
    that substance?

If you have problems with updating then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the DMG file to the desktop
    * Firefox 4.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    * Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
    * Install the new version that you have downloaded

  • Cycle Through Windows broken

The Cycle Through Windows (CMD + ~) is broken in the Leopard Finder. It works until you cycle to the Desktop, and then it stops working. You need to click on another Finder window to get it going again. Not a show-stopper but it's definitely a very annoying bug.
    OAW

*Cycle Through Windows* in the Finder works again if you +disable Spaces+ (...) I hope it's just a silly bug, cause it is really annoying (and I want to use Spaces).
10.5.1 didn't fix it - let's wait and see what 10.5.2 will bring us.
To disable Spaces: System Preferences > Exposé & Spaces > Spaces > uncheck 'Enable Spaces'

  • Is it possible to get ReadWrite Mac HFS+ drivers for windows 7 so I can manage my Mac formatted Backups through windows bootcamp?

    Hello!
I was just curious if there was a driver or something I can install so that I can read and write my mac OSX formatted [HFS+] external drives in Windows 7,
using the windows file explorer [the equivalent for finder].
This is essential for me because I need the windows explorer copy/file transfer dialog box with all it's options and functionality.
Any suggestions relating either to windows bootcamp, or running windows through vmware fusion next to mountain lion [I would much prefer to be able to do this with VMWare Fusion, but either way is absolutely fine.]
I need this because I need to do HEAPS of file management,
and I find finder's file transfer / copy dialog box to be totally inadequate, hopeless and almost useless, [a nightmare in fact] next to the excellent functionality of Windows 7 file transfer dialog.
This has been my most hated issue with OSX for years now.
File management is a total nightmare in OSX.
I may make another post / feature request detailing my hatred of this lack of functionality, because it kills me every time I have to manage and backup large folders filled with lots of files and subfolders.
    Sorry for the end-rant.
Thanks so much for any help! (:

    Hello Alberto and Woodmeister50,
thank you for both your answers.
I have to try and remember to state things I have tried previously or am aware of; my bad!
    Alberto:
    Thanks for your ideas.
    I'm aware of ex-fat format.
Unfortunately, my external drives are quite full and a reformat or EXFAT partition is out of the question.
I'm formatted them OSX extended journaled a couple of years back before I was aware of exfat.
I could buy yet another drive, but I don't really want to do that until SSD's come down in price and expand in size.
[also, while not a big issue, I hear EXFAT can't handle files bigger than 4gb. Not that I have many such files, so that's not really a big concern].
So doing my file organization through windows explorer is, to my knowledge, the best option,
if it is possible. [I hope!]
This would be a perfectly satisfactory solution for me if I can use Windows Explorer through VMware to manage and organize the files and folder on my HFS+ external drives.
I'm not sure if paragon HFS+ or Macdrive allow you to use windows explorer to manage files?
Or only through their own file manager and dialogs?
A costly gamble if they do not, and if their file/folder transfer dialog also happens to be inadequate.
    Woodmeister :
    Thanks.
Actually, my problem is both HFS+ / windows compatibility AND that I hate finder
[the HFS problem being a result of the fact I hate finder]
I have tried Pathfinder [the demo version though, maybe it has limited functionality],
and I have found it's file transfer dialog / options / functionality to be very totally lacking as well.
    Others I have tried.
    Mac Explorer.
MoveAddict doesn't seem to work for me presently, although I hear it might be good.
Total finder is fantastic for other reasons but does nothing for the copy dialog.
Um.... there were a bunch of others I tried, but all no good.
So I guess my question is still the same, with a bit more specific information now
For a very in-depth review/analysis of the hatred of finder's lack of features in this area,
there are many threads on many forums, such as can be found if you google for the thread on this forum
GOOGLE : MacRumors OS X: how to merge folder contents, not replace
Please ignore the fact that some ex-windows people are just not used to the fact that "replace" in finder means to replace a whole folder, as this is not the issue.
The lack of functionality is, and there are many pages of mac-loving people complaining about it.

  • Can't access NAS through Windows 8.1 file explorer anymore

This used to word perfectly, but since I reinstalled my Windows 8.1 setup I can't access my NAS through Windows Explorer anymore.
The weird thing is: I can still access it by logging in into the admin console via "http://ix4-300d/manage/manage.html" in IE.
From here I can access and edit my shares, download stuff, etc.
But for some reason my PC can't find my NAS anymore using file explorer -> Network -> \\ix4-300d\.
This sucks, cause now I can't copy anything to the NAS anymore (which used to work perfectly).
I guess it must be some network setting in Windows, but I can't find it.
Anyone knows what could be the problem?
Both the PC and the NAS are in workgroup "WORKGROUP" btw.

    Hello ExReey,
First thing to do is make sure that you have the correct IP address (you can find this on the ix4 display) and try the procedure using the IP address instead of the device name>
I would also try manually mapping the Shares:

Also, I cant open any Imgur links here, is that an error you are trying to show me?
