W540 + Ultra docks = big serious issue

Hello everyone, We recently ordered 30+ x240s and w540 laptops using the ultradocks. Here's the prequel
1. initially they had the issue with monitors going blank, that has been fixed with a firmware update
2. there was a second firmware update ver 2.21 that fixes some issues with HP monitors. Ok , done.
Ok now all is well, we have the x240s on the docks and w540s with their docks + the 175w powersupply supplies etc.
Now we have users that wanted 27inch and some 30 inch monitors and a big big problem comes up.
The docks cannot drive anything higher then those 24inch monitors (1920x1200). the 27 inch (2560x1440) and the 30inch (2560x1600) does not work AT all.
it does not work with even ONE of those monitors hooked into the dock not speaking of the 2 that users wanted.
So w540+ultra dock + 1 27/30 inch monitor = nothing, blank screen, go to display settings and it detects a grey option
Now, the w540 without the ultra dock and hooked directly into a 27/30 inch monitor = no problem, we have full functionality.
We have tried every combination to try to get it to work and it's a no go.
Researched the dock's DVI port and see if we can possibly use that, nope, the DVI is only single link so our only option are the 2 display ports on the dock.
Of course those don't work at all. We have opened a ticket with lenovo and it's been escalated, awaiting responds.
This maybe a serious issue I am seeing here since we have 30+ docks and more coming. (yes we have tested on them all and their firmwares are 2.21)
Anyways, if anyone has run into this please confirm. Suggestions are welcome, but I am sure we have tried just about everything.

I was able to connect a W540 to an Ultra Dock (170W) in "Standard" mode and then get an external monitor working at a resolution of 3840 x 2160. The monitor is a Samsung U28D590D connected via the DisplayPort on the docking station. Note that "Advanced" mode was very unstable, and often crashed within a few minutes. Standard mode works when connected via DisplayPort but would also crash instantly and repeatedly if connected via HDMI.
Tested with a variety of bios, firmware and driver versions. Including System BIOS v2.17 & v2.18. Docking station firmware v2.22 and multiple Intel and NVIDIA driver versions. None worked with HDMI or in Advanced mode. Hopefully this gets fixed at some point.

W540, Ultra Dock and 3840*2160

It took me some weeks to realize that the implementation of Nvidia is different from my W520 which was able to drive 3840*2160@30Hz natively through the built-in DP as well as the Dock's DP.
With the W540, I only get full Nvidia support (full means switching off Intel HD) when the W540 is connected to the dock. Before I buy a new dock (40A20135EU or 40A20170EU), I need to know whether the 4K resolution is working in this combination with my W540 with Nvidia Quattro 1100M.
With my w520 and ultra dock, the tech spec only mentioned resolutions up to 2560*1600 but 4K worked anyway at 30Hz with acceptable quality. Of course, I prefer to get 60Hz but with my Samsung 40' UHD and it's HDMi 2.0 interface I'm afraid that I will be stucked at 30Hz as there is no cable supportiing 60Hz with DP 1.2 output to an HDMI 2.0 input.
So; is anyone out there running the Ultra dock with W540 and 4K resolution successfully ?
Furthermore, like many others here in the forum, I experience the display switching off for some seconds randomly. I learned that running a 135W power supply could myke a difference, so I'm wondering wether buying the 0A20135EU 135W version is the better choice for my W540. I presume that the charging time will go up but are there other differences compared to the 170W version dock ?

I'm using a 4k screen in MST mode with the W540 and the ultra dock (170W power supply):
When using the dock in "normal mode" (= connected to the Intel chipset) the screen works - sort of. It will turn on and off quite a few times after plugging it in(Win 8.1) and then work for a few hours - at that point it switches off(you'll get some artifacts on screen warning you before it goes blank), which requires power-cycling screen and dock to get things working again.
If I set it to "advanced mode"(= connected to the NVidia chipset) the screen is detected but stays blank, presumably because the NVidia card doesn't like the "on-off" period. No 10-bit for me
If I plug the screen into the Thunderbolt port it works without any issues.
If anybody got things to work in "advanced mode", I would be interested as well...

W540 + Ultra Dock on Linux

I have a W540 and it is running Ubuntu Linux (still going ever since the BIOS update). I want to get the docking station (the whole reason for buying a Lenovo) to have external keyboard mouse and monitor.
I am interested in the Ultra Dock:

I see some of our T540 friends are having troubles with the Ultra Dock. It is not clear to me if those problems are also with the W540 models.
Has anyone with a W540 AND Linux been able to use the Ultra Dock with external monitors?

The keyboard and mouse seems to work fine with the dock. The dock behavior is quite inconsistent. My colleague has been able to project to two monitors and the screen by using Standard Mode (intel chip drives the dock outputs; in advanced mode nvidia drives the dock outputs) and then plugging one monitor into the vga output on the laptop, and the second monitor into the DVI output on the dock. He also has to do some weird unplugging and replugging ritual to get it all to work nice; it never works right on boot.
I am unable to replicate his success, however. He is even running on 12.04. I tried a bunch of things over the weekend: 12.04, 13.10, and even a daily build of 14.04 (which wouldn't even boot from the live cd). Right now I am running Linux Mint 16 (which is based on 13.10, I think). I would think a newer version would have more success. Another thing I notice is that when I open up restricted drivers, options to install the nvidia driver never shows up. However, doing an lspci | grep -i nvidia shows the nvidia driver, which means the system can see it (it even shows the model number: Quadro K1100M). It never shows up for me docked or undocked.
It's pretty disappointing because I would love to have two monitors. I think I can kind of make do with one monitor and the laptop screen for the time being, but it still sucks. What is frustrating also is that this laptop is supposed to be "Ubuntu certified", but in my experience it is anything but that.

Ultra dock + three external monitors not working

Hardware:
W540 + Ultra Dock (170W)
2x 24" LCDs @ 1920X1200 (DVI only)
1x 30" LCD @ 2560x1600 (DVI only)
1x Display Port to DVI Active Converter (for the 30" LCD)
What I want to have is four displays: W540 LCD + 3 external monitors as described above. However, I can only get two of the external displays to turn on regardless of how many chickens I sacrifice. Note: I've searched extensively to see if others have had this problem, which they obviously have, but none of the solutions worked.
I think the issue is the 'advanced' mode, but I already turned it on in the BIOS. The laptop LCD works correctly (2880x1620), the 30" LCD works correctly with the display port to DVI active adapter (2560x1600), and one of the 24" LCDs works correctly (1920x1200). However, the other 24" LCD isn't available in Windows as a detected display unless I start swapping cables, which will then enable it while disabling the other 24" LCD.
For reference, the connections are as follows:
Laptop LCD (built-in)
30" LCD: DisplayPort to DVI (active); Ultra Dock DisplayPort 0
24" LCD number 1: DisplayPort to DVI cable (passive); Ultra Dock DisplayPort 1
24" LCD number 2: DVI to DVI; Ultra Dock DVI Port 0
It's my understanding that the K1100M discrete graphics card should be driving all three of the external displays, but that isn't the case right now. I see one 24" and the 30" displays in the Nvidia Control Panel and I see all three working monitors (including the laptop LCD) in botht he Nvidia Control Panel and the Windows Display area.
Things I've tried:
Uninstalled + reinstalled Nvidia Quadro drivers
Uninstalled + reinstalled Intel 4600 drivers
Enabled Advanced mode in BIOS
Restarted 5,000 times
Swapped cables until my fingers started to bleed
Updated the firmware of the Ultra Dock (it was already fully updated)
According to this page, I should be able to connect six displays including the built-in LCD. When I first looked at it, I thought I could use both Ultra Dock DisplayPort ports as well as the Ultra Dock DVI port, but it's very unclear if that's actually the case. What does it mean by DP or HDMI and DP or DVI? Does that mean I can use both DisplayPorts (which I'm currently doing and it works) only? Does it mean I can use both DisplayPorts as well as HDMI and DVI? Does it mean if I want to use HDMI and DVI that I can't use either DisplayPort? Does it mean DVI and HDMI both share an output with one of the DisplayPorts so only one of each can be used at a time? TERRIBLE DOCUMENTATION.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as this has been extremely frustrating. I have a feeing the solution is going to be a disappointment as well because it's probably going to involve buying yet another adapter and/or using the Mini-DP output on the laptop instead of, you know, actually being able to use the expensive Ultra Dock...

I have no idea how to tell if everything is working because the graphics card situation is extremely confusing. I didn't realize when I bought the laptop that the discrete card couldn't drive the laptop's built-in LCD, which is very annoying. Or, maybe that's not true, but the documentation is so confusing that I can't be sure either way. Also, and this really pissed me off, the Ultra Dock DVI connector can't drive a dual link display. What the hell??? Why was this not clearly annotated somewhere? I really hated needing to purchase a DisplayPort to DVI active adapter to make my brand new laptop dock work as advertised. UGH.

I'm struggling with a very similar problem. (Thinkpad W540, K2100, Ultradock 170W)
I am using 2 external monitors right now in bios display standard mode - it's the only way they work at all for me right now. I have tried uninstalling graphics drivers, enabling advanced mode, and restarting, but none of the external displays are detected. I've also tried updating the dock's firmware, but it doesn't seem to be updating (this may have already been updated).
Current working setup:
- 2 x 22" external LCDs connected to Ultradock via DP -> DVI cables
- Laptop integrated LCD
Related but not quite as equally frustrating, the integrated LCD does not resume when waking the computer from a sleep state. Only a reboot brings the display back.
I'd like to connect another 24" display over HDMI, but don't have any confidence of it working since advanced mode is utterly worthless for me at the moment. I'm quite dissatisfied especially since I purchased an extended warranty and last time I called for support Lenovo tried to sell me an additional support plan claiming that software was not covered under my current warranty.

A brand new W540 and the Ultra Dock humms, black out external screen, won't recognize mouse and some

Just received a W540 and an Ultra Dock. Here is my first impressions.
During setup ... tried to connect my speakers directly onto the laptop.... HUMMMMM! (really loud humming sound, until Windows loads ...sounds like a short somewhere ...). Ok, obviously sound is not the main focus of W540.
After a little while... boink! ... and the external screen goes black accompanied with the "Windows detected something disconnect"-sound. No matter what I clicked on the keyboard, or how much a moved the mouse, the external screen wouldn't turn on again. I had to flip up the screen on the laptop, and tada, Windows reported that something connected again, and the external screen turned on again. Turns out that I need to keep the laptop screen open at all times now, and now and then both screens disconnect and connect again. Not completely a showstopper, but somewhat annoying. Ok, how to fix - enter "lenovo ultra dock black screen" in Google and see that a bunch of people have experienced the same thing. After some reading, I found this official support page "LENOVO THINKPAD PRO DOCK AND THINKPAD ULTRA DOCK ARE CAUSING DISPLAY ISSUES ON EXTERNAL MONITORS" (http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/ht081248). Seems to fit my situation perfectly. Just download the fwdphb03.exe program and follow the instructions. But does fwdphb03.exe even start?!? NO!
Just a brief flicker and no application nor instructions to follow. In addition, I am Administrator on my machine. Please make applications that at least attempt to work....
I have an Aten mouse and keyboard switch (KVM) (CS-1784 to be precise), which have been working seamlessly for years on all other machines I have (VMWare images with different Windows versions, Raspberry Pi and Mac). Connecting the KVM with it's mouse and keyboard renders a working keyboard and a dead mouse (remember - switching to one of the other machines renders working keyboard and mouse instantly).... <rant on>pheeew, starting to get a bad feeling here. OBVIOUSLY we have a lot of cool hardware like USB 3 and DisplayPort and what not, but WHAT DOES THAT MATTER, when the Lenovo folks can't program this stuff properly?</rant off>
The W540 comes with a lot of Lenovo software. Much of it is really good and useful. But what happened when you try to log in to Windows? For some reason Lenovo want to inform you that the Num Lock is on when you see the standard login screen. The message something like "Num Lock is on - your password may be entered incorrectly". All in some black background, covering OVER the login field in Windows !!!! Hey, the laptop has a numeric keyboard, I don't need this message. Luckily others again have experience the same thing. At this page http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/New-T540p-numlock-warning-at-login/td-p/142... I get the tip that I need to rename the tpnumlk.exe to something else. Gone was the stupid message.
My advice to Lenovo - don't include stuff that harvest a lot of complaints and that obviously is going to annoy your customers. Even if the machine was one with a small keyboard and no separate numeric keyboard, I would NEVER EVER want to have some ugly black box covering over the standard login field… I can’t even imagine that the developer of this tool, use it (nor like it)! That is exactly why bloatware gets its reputation.
I would of course understand all this if I were talking about cheap machines and some wacko docking station. But I am not.... This is state-of-the-art, 2014, expensive-style laptop from the same manufacturer.
PS! At the end of this session, Lenovo tells me that there is a problem with the powersystem, and that it want to reduce power to sustainable levels....

W540 170W Ultra Dock HDMI and windows 8.1

The W540 has an onboard video card in addition to the NVidia video card. We use AutoCAD and Revit, and will never care for the onboard video card driver. We cannot seem to get the 170 watt Ultra Docking Stations (plural) to work with our W540 Laptops (plural) when selecting the NVIDIA card and using an external monitor. We have updated all the drivers Lenovo has asked us to including the firmware on the docking station. We have followed the instructions to make the change in the BIOS so that the NVIDIA card is only used. We have called Lenovo support twice on two separate occasions. On one occasion, they said we are not the only people to call in about the problem, and that our only course of action is to get another docking station or return the dock to our vendor. Has anyone else had any luck using Windows 8.1, W540 on an ultra dock and using HDMI? Even though I mention HDMI, (because I think it is the main suspect), DVI seems to blue screen the laptop too.

I'll give it a shot as nothing is working now. I'll post my findings.
I will say the limitation in the readme of the firmware update you sent me is important. It translates to I can't use the w540 with the ultra dock, AND use the nvidia card. As a consumer looking to purchase workstation class machines specifically to use the nvidia card, this doesn't sit right.

T450S in Lenovo ThinkPad Ultra Dock, network missing at startup

Network do not found when starting the laptop which is docked.
You need to unplug network cable from docking station and put back...that normally helps.
Without docking station the networks works well.
Also sometimes keyboard and mouse stops working (those are connected to docking station.

I am really sorry you are experiencing such issues. What makes me really mad is the fact, according to your words, that Lenovo support is directing you to this forum for help? This forum works on volunteer basis, so you might have a luck or not. I mean, you are living in the USA which is the most important market for Lenovo so if I would you, I would escallate the support issue.
Meanwhile, there are two options you might try out:

Windows 8.1 crashes when connecting to lenovo ultra dock 135w (Ubuntu also installed)

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad T440s. It's partitioned with Ubuntu 14.04.1 lts and Windows 8.1. When I connect it to my ultra dock 135 w in Windows 8.1 the ThinkPad crashes with a blue screen. The error thrown is igdkmd64.sys and system_service_exception.
This problem only occurs in Windows. I can boot Ubuntu without errors, but not Windows. Also if I boot to Windows without connecting to the dock, but then connect to the dock when I'm logged into Windows it also crashes immediately.
I'm using two monitors, one with hdmi and another with dvi. I'v also tried with just the hdmi and the dvi.

This has not solved the problem. Is there a solution to the problem I'm experiencing or does the ultra dock simply not work when you're dual booting Ubuntu and Windows?

We have been having this issue continuously as well. Have been contacting Lenovo support to no avail. Drivers / firmware are up to date, and we have 40+ users experiencing this issue. DiplayLink drivers also up to date.

One more victim here. T440s (fully patched, UltraDock, lid closed, external TrackPoint keyboard), Win8.1 (fully patched), HDMI, Acer T232HL touchscreen monitor.
Volcomtx85's posting (over 50% failure rate in a corporate setting) should warrant some attention.
Since there is a mix of Win7, Win8 and Win8.1 in the thread (presumably with different drivers), and different modes of monitor connectivity, the two points of commonality in the reports would seem to be BIOS and motherboard hardware. If so, let's hope it's the BIOS.

I have a T440s sitting in the Ultra Dock and a Samsung 2343bw hooked up by DVI.
On both Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 I can only set the resolution of the external screen to 1024x768. When I select a higher resolution, both internal and external monitor go black for a couple of seconds and when the desktop comes back it's still 1024x768 on the external monitor. I tried the following three drivers:
1) Deinstall display driver manually and let Win 8.1 pick a driver automatically, version 10.18.10.3318 (03-Oct-2013) gets installed. With this driver, both displays can be set to their native resolution. Unfortunately, the external display goes black once in a while and switches back on after 3 sec. The monitor itself is unlikely to be faulty, since it works well on my T400(+Dock).
2) Install driver from Lenovo driver matrix, you'll get 10.18.10.3282. With this driver, the external monitor only displays 1024x768 as described above.
3) Get the driver for HD 4400 from Intel website. It doesn't install voluntarily, but there is a workaround: http://www.intel.com/support/graphic...hd+4400+driver
I tried it and only get 1024x768 on the external display, just as with driver (2). If I connect the monitor by VGA, I get the blinking-error described in (1).
Hence, the external monitor is not usable, what is highly unsatisfying.
Can anyone confirm the Issue/problem? Is there a solution?

Ultra Dock -- both DisplayPort monitors are always mirrored

I just got a new W550s with an Ultra Dock and it mostly works well with my setup -- Ubuntu 14.04 (Linux Mint 17.2). The problem I have is that both DP1 and DP2 are mirrored, and the Display utility only detects one screen. If I plug one of the monitors into the Mini-DP port on the laptop, it shows up as a third monitor and seems to work fine. Is there any way to use the two dock DisplayPort connectors as separate screens in Linux? Does this work properly in Windows at least? If so, at least there is some hope that we can make it work in Linux.

ThinkPad Ultra Dock - 90W US 40A20090US Dual Video Vga port dropping

We have a new lenovo 440 with this docking station. There are two monitors hooked to both the DVD and VGA output.
Everything works most of the time but every now and then the VGA monitor goes black and wont come back until you undock and redock the laptop. The DVD monitor continues to work its just the monitor attached to the VGA output.
Any thoughts as to what the issue could be?

thanks for posting. I believe you issue could be related to the solution I have below. Could you try the solution below.
NB: Make sure your system is docked to the ThinkPad Pro Dock or Ultra Dock with at least one external monitor connected.
The firmware for the DisplayPort hub in the dock needs to be updated :
If the display on an external monitor connected to a ThinkPad Pro Dock or a ThinkPad Ultra dock is flickering or going blank, download the firmware (fwdphb01.exe) from the following URL:

Downloading:
A window will pop up asking you to Run or Save the file. Select Save.
Choose the folder you would like to download the file to and select Save. A different window will appear and the download will begin and complete. Once the download has completed, there may or may not be a message stating that the download completed successfully.
Make sure to be logged on with an Administrator account.
Make sure your system is docked to the ThinkPad Pro Dock or Ultra Dock with at least one external monitor connected.
Installing file:
Close all applications.
Double click the downloaded file: fwdphb01.exe
It will display the current firmware version and the firmware version to be installed.
If the current firmware version on your dock is older than 2.17.000, then click the Update firmware button.
Follow the instructions on the screen to complete installation and restart the dock with following action:
Shutdown the system, unplug the AC adapter from the dock, and wait for 5 seconds. Then, re-attach the AC adapter and power on.
6. If your docking station already updated, then click the Cancel Update button to exit.

Kubuntu 14.04 + Lenovo X240 + Thinkpad Ultra Dock 90w - multiply display

Operating system - Kubuntu 14.04
I have Lenovo X240 two Dell monitors connected to DP1 and DP2 of the Thinkpad Ultra Dock 90w.
Now it works only in next modes:
Two connected monitors works in clone mode (each 1920x1080).
Two connected monitors works as one big monitor with 3840x1080 resolution.
So, looks that both monitors are connected to "DP2" output of the xrand.
Are anybody know how to force to work two connected monitors in 'extend desktop' mode, so each should be 1920x1080 but no clone?

I am writing to bring to your attention a serious issue I had with your product. My brother bought one iPhone 4, 16 gb mobile phone from US last year and gifted me in India. In few months it had a problem with its home key. I took the phone to service service center and they told me that your phone is having hardware problem and as the phone is under warranty cannot be replace in India. You can come back when this is out of warranty. Now few days back when i walk again to the service center they stated that this phone we cannot repair here in India because of this phone purchased from US.
This a total disgraceful service from such a big brand like apple.
I hope to hear back from you about this incident.

No iPhone has a international warranty. Warranty is valid only in
country of original purchase. Since iPhone was bought in the US,
you must return the iPhone to the US. That means you must personally bring
the iPhone to Apple in the US or send it to a friend/relative in the US for them
to take to Apple. After replacement, your friend can ship it back to you. Shipping
and insurance costs are your responsibility.
Apple does not accept international shipments for evaluation/repair
and will not ship replacements out of the country.

ThinkPad Ultra Docks - Difference between models

Hi, Can anyone advise whether the only difference between the various thinkpad ultra docks models is just the power rating on the adapter? Will I be able to use a 40A20090 ultra dock with a 170W adapter in conjunction with a laptop that requires a 170W adapter. Thanks.

I am half kidding: you are missing a normal expectation.
Whatever, whenever, wherever you are, do not trust advertising. They are about bragging, they don't have to be real, they only tell you how good it could be and never let you know about how bad they may be. But they usually don't dare to lie much, so take them as a reference.
In your case I believe you are expecting too much from X1 and T420s. You should actually try them out before order. It is easy to understand the reflection, it is because of the Corning Gorilla glass. It is a big pro but also brings about a few cons I think I can generalize every piece of your disappointments into this, like the heat and noise are because of the much improved computing power. You just have to think it through before buying.
And to the difference part. Quality cannot be measured without time. That is the difference.
Anyway I am not selling Thinkpad, I am just a fan. I understand that actually the brand is not as shiny as before, but it is still the greatest to me.

Serious issues with brand new T440p

Hello everypone,
I recently was supplied with a T440p for work. The laptop has some serious issues that neither I nor my colleague from IT could solve. So before we send it back I would like to try the forum because I really can't wait another couple of weeks for a new machine (I desperately need it for work).
The laptop works fine when it is in the docking station, but I can't use it in battery mode. It crashes/restarts after a couple of minutes. Sometimes I don't even get to the log in screen. It will take me to this white-text-on-black-screen page where I can choose if I want to run Windows (7 Professional) in safe mode or normally. This crash/restart issue does not persist in safe mode, but I can't really work in safe mode.
Another issue is that the laptop sometimes takes a very long time to restart or to shut down. It just shows the empty desktop without all the shortcuts and the task bar for some time and then finally logs off after give or take five minutes. After that, the restarting works fine. But it's really annoying.
Another thing was that the laptop could not wake up properly from sleep or hibernation mode. It would crash/restart every time (like described above). I kind of solved the problem by telling the laptop to never go to sleep or hibernation mode. After ten minutes there would just be a screen saver now.
I am convinced that all this is not caused by conflicting software. I only installed very few programs yet (mostly office programs and Skype). Naturally all the Windows Updates (and Lenovo Updates) have been installed so far, too.
Here is what I did so far:
- Ran all tests (extended version) in the Lenovo solution center, all good, no warnings whatsoever
- Ran all BIOS tests, same here
- Googled for T440p issues and found out about the problems with the driver for the finger print reader, so I installed the latest version of it, did not solve the problems
- Installed a BIOS update (from the Lenovo page), did not solve the problems
So I don't have any idea on how to solve this. I know my way around computers, but I am definitely no IT guy, so I hope you can suggest some things I have not tried yet. I rather would fix this Laptop than waiting for a new one...

Not much to do beside submitting support / warranty claim. I guess systemboard will be replaced.
Edit: OTH I have heard certain windows update may cause issues, so maybe try to revert to restore point before updates and check if issue remains ...
