W550s: horrible performance

Hey all, I'm using a w550s since May now and I'm very disappointed in the performance. I'm unable to watch any movies without enormous lag or audio stutters, opening facebook causes 100% CPU load and an unresponsive system. When I'm watching Youtube I can't use Skype because I'll have a 0.5 sec delay when I press a key on my keyboard (and still 100% cpu load). This is what happends when I open facebook in chrome:  I've tried to reinstall the system with a clean version of Windows 8.1, downloaded only the important drivers from the lenovo website and also removed the PM driver to check if this resolves the issue, it doesn't.I also tried to set everything to maximum performance in energy management, no luck. I have this problem while its docked and using my two Dell U2715H screens (both connected to the display ports at the docking station) or when I'm using the high resolution build-in screen (no touch, anti-glare). Also I noticed I'm always running on the integrated GPU and never using the nVidia K620 (as far as I can see). I really wondering what is causing this, is the CPU and GPU really this slow? I understand it's a low power version of the i7, but really, this slow? It's not worth the enormous amount of money... Hopefully there is a solution for this, or maybe my w550s is broken in some way (I ran the Lenovo diagnostic utility multiple times). Can anyone tell me if they had this kind of performance issues (besides the PM driver)? Thanks! Daan

Hi, I'm using a W550s with the same CPU/RAM config as you and I ame experiencing none of the problems you are.I should note that this is after changing a few settings alomost out of the box, I suggest you take the same steps:1. Install the following software and drivers:-BIOS Update Utility for Windows 10 (64-bit), 8.1 (64-bit), 7 (32-bit, 64-bit) - ThinkPad T550, W550s-Intel Chipset Driver for Windows 10 (64-bit), 8.1 (64-bit) - ThinkPad Helix (Types: 20CG, 20CH), T550,W550s, X1 Carbon (Types: 20BS, 20BT)-Intel Management Engine 10.0 Software for Windows 10 (64-bit), 8.1 (64-bit) - ThinkPad-Intel Management Engine Firmware 10.0 for Windows 10 (64-bit), 8.1 (64-bit) - ThinkPad --Intel Collaborative Processor Performance Control (CPPC) driver for Windows 10 (64-bit), 8.1 (64-  bit) - ThinkPad Helix (Type 20CG, 20CH), T550, W550s, X1 Carbon (Type 20BS, 20BT)-Lenovo Power Management Driver for Windows 10 (32-bit, 64-bit), 8.1 (32-bit, 64-bit) - Laptop -Lenovo Active Protection System for Windows 10 (64-bit), 8.1 (64-bit) - Notebook 2. In the BIOS, make sure that in the power menu the settings for Intel Speedstep Technology and Adaptive Thermal Management are as follows: Intel SpeedStep® technologyMode for AC • Maximum PerformanceMode for Battery • Maximum Performance Adaptive Thermal ManagementScheme for AC • Maximize PerformanceScheme for Battery • Maximize Performance 3. In Windows there is a Lenove program called Lenovo Settings (W8 App). In this program there is a menu power, within the power menu you can switch intelligent cooling on or off. Make sure it is turned off. Hope this helps.

  • Horrible Performance On Good Hardware + Usability Questions

    I downloaded the most recent iTunes version as of 1 week ago, to use to sync and backup my iPhone.
    I have a few complaints: Horrible performance. Clicking on just about any node, and it takes 5-10 seconds to load whatever window it is calling. Navigation from any menu to another is just a disaster. My PC is XP Pro with 4 GB installed RAM, an Intel 3 GHZ processor, and a 10,000 RPM hard drive and solid mid range gaming video card. All other applications work very quickly.
    Second, is there a decent way to search the App Store? From my phone I can easily search on a key word, but in iTunes the advanced search doesn't seem to just search apps, it searches all. I figure I MUST be missing something!
    Thanks!

    It's a long shot, but you might try temporarily disabling any antivirus and antispyware applications you may have on your system, including Windows Defender if you installed it, and see if that makes any difference. I've encountered situations, albeit rare, where such a utility gets "overzealous" and starts scanning every activity for an app, thereby slowing it down. You probably want to disconnect from the Internet while you make such tests just to help ensure nothing sneaks onto your system.
    If that doesn't help, you might try completely removing and reinstalling QuickTime and iTunes. Instructions can be found here:
    Bugie: Perform a Thorough & Complete Uninstall and Reinstall of iTunes/QuickTime.
    Make sure you make a backup of any content you've purchased from the iTunes Store or that would otherwise be difficult to replace, just in case something goes wrong.
    Not much positive help, I know, but perhaps it might do some good.
    Regards.

  • Another "horrible performance after upgrading to Lion" post

    Hi,
    Sorry for yet another "my computer has horrible performance after upgrading to Lion" post.  I did search the forum before posting.
    I have a relatively new Macbook Pro, 8 GB RAM, 2.8 MHz Intel i7 CPU.  I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion, then Lion to 10.7.2.
    The first time I upgraded, I no longer had my user account, so restored from Time Machine back to SL.  After a month or so, I hoped Apple had fixed the bug, so I redownloaded and reinstalled, and this time the upgrade succeeded.
    Ever since the upgrade, my MBP runs like a dog.  I get the spinning beach ball constantly, across all range of applications, both Apple and 3rd party.  Occasionally it doesn't wake up from sleep (close, open lid) and I have to kick it in the head by holding down the power button.
    I've tried booting into the recovery partition, running disk utility, and repairing disk and permissions.  I've read elsewhere (Google hit) that doing a completely clean install fixes the performance issues (for those users anyway).
    I know this is a fairly generic post, but any advice on how to maximize machine performance under Lion, or should I revert to Snow Leopard?  Do I really have to wipe the disk, install fresh, restore all non-OS files (don't accidentally wipe a required OS file), then reapply the 10.7.2 maintenance?  Yuck.
    Thanks,
    Scott

    try an SMC reset if you are not seeing any weird spikes in Activity Monitor and you've deduced that none of your third party drivers or apps are interfearing with the way lion works.
    Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
    Note: Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).
    Shut down the computer.
    Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
    On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
    Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
    Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

  • Anyone using a 12 Core Mac Pro? I have HORRIBLE performance issues .. Help!

    After the latest 10.7.4 Mac OS X update I have extremely horrible performance issues with AE ... and they were not so great before the update.
    It is still stabilizing ... but an 1:19 clip in SD is taking 12 HOURS TO analyze and stabilize. !!!
    The 12 cores are barely being used and this problem has been an issue since I purchased the suite over a year ago.
    Does anyone else have problems using AE on their 12 CORE MAC PRO?
    REPLY ONLY IF YOU HAVE A 12 CORE MAC PRO PLEASE.
    There must be a problem because since the update ... Adobe Encore is PERFECT .. and ALL 12 CORES MAX OUT and the encoding is quick!!
    I also have major problems between PP and AE using Dynamic link .. and slow renders in PP.
    Everything else works fine .. other apps / other vendors.
    I am calling Adobe today.

    Thank you for your time.

    Only half of my hyperthreaded processors are active when using AE "Warp Stabilizer". This issue was addressed before in the Forums. There was no solution. I dont' know if it is any better in CS 6.
    Also the automatic saving of all linked compositions while using the dynamic link feature bewteen PP and AE causes huge inoperatable waiting times .. unbearable. My guess is that the new "Global Performance Cache " fixes this ... which I consider update to a terrible problem .. but they sell it as a feature ( Ill go into that later.
    Question:
    What RAID card are you using?
    Do you use the Warp Stabilizer?

  • Horrible performance with JDK 1.3.1!

    There is something very weird going on with Solaris (SPARC) JDK 1.3.1
    Hotspot Server jvm. We have an existing application which gets a large
    resultset back from the database, iterates over it and populates two int[]
    arrays.
    The operation iterates thru a 200,000 row resultset, which has three
    interger columns.
    Here are the performance numbers for various jdk (hotspot 2.0) combinations:
    Using Solaris JDK1.2.2_05a with the jit: 3 seconds
    Using Solaris JDK1.3.0 -server: <3 seconds
    Using Windows JDK1.3.1 -server: <3 seconds
    Using Solaris JDK1.3.1 -client: 7 seconds
    Using Solaris JDK1.3.1 -server: 3 MINUTES!
    As you can see the solaris 1.3.1 -server is having horrible performance, 60X
    worse than jdk1.3.0 -server and 1.2.2_05a with jit. I thought it was a
    problem with 1.3.1 on solaris, so I tried the 1.3.1 -client and while the
    performance was much better than 3 minutes, it still was slower than (which
    I expected since -client is meant for client side apps). I have no idea why
    this is happening. Below are the details of the problem.
    Oracle 8.1.7 on solaris 2.7
    Solaris 2.6
    Oracle Thin JDBC driver for 8.1.7 (classes12.zip)
    Code:
    String strQuery = "select entity_id, entity_child, period_id" +
    " FROM entity_map" +
    " WHERE entity_id >=0" +
    " AND period_id in (" + sEmptyPeriodIds + ")" +
    " ORDER BY period_id, entity_id ";
    boolean bAddedChildren = false;
    int intEntityId;
    int intChildId;
    int intPeriodId;
    //objDatabse just wraps creation and execution of resultset
    rs = objDatabase.executeSQLAndReturnResultSet( strQuery );
    //Timing start here
    while ( rs.next() )
    intEntityId = rs.getInt( 1 );
    intChildId = rs.getInt( 2 );
    intPeriodId = rs.getInt( 3 );
    // embo.addEntityMap( intPeriodId, intEntityId, intChildId );
    bAddedChildren = true;
    //Timing ends here
    If anyone has had similiar problems, I'd love to hear about it.
    Something is really really wrong with how 1.3.1 -server is optimizing the
    oracle jdbc code. Problem is that this is a black box, with no source
    available. Doesn't oracle test new versions of sun jvm's when they come
    out??
    Thanks,
    Darren

    Darren,
    Good luck on trying to get any support for JDK 1.3.x with the ORACLE drivers. ORACLE doesn't support JDK 1.3.x yet. We've had other problems with the ORACLE 8.1.7 drivers. Have you tried running the same bench marks using the 8.1.6 or 8.1.6.2 drivers? I would be interested to find out if the performance problems are driver related or just JVM.

  • Horrible performance drop with mixed ports 100 & 1000 on the LAN side.

    I have horrible performance with newly bought lrt224.
    WAN side is a 150 Mb/s Cable connection.
    LAN has 3 ports at 1Gb/s and 1 port at 100 Mb/s
    Test:
    On any of the lan ports at 1 Gb/s I do a test via speedtest.net and get 150 Mb/s
    On the Lan port at 100 Mb/s I do a test via speedtest.net and get 10 Mb/s (same server)
    Weird part, I do a LAN (1Gb/s) to LAN (100Mb/s) test I get around 99Mb/s.
    Second weird part, I replace WAN side cable modem with a VDSL+ line and I get max VDSL+ performance of 75 Mb/s.
    Any hints?

  • CS3 on mac - horrible performance

    Can anyone on a G5 Mac, or any non-intel mac for that matter,
    confirm my findings: CS3 is running slow and crappily compared to
    CS2. Pull down menus are horrible (like the site list menu), just
    bad. Aside from Photoshop CS3 taking longer to save files, all the
    other CS3 programs are the same speed or slightly better, yet
    Dreamweaver is bad. Bad enough for me to go back to CS2 so I can
    actually get some work done.
    I won't even mention some of the other quirks that have
    changed like color pickers.
    Am I alone? I almost stupidly bought a new Mac Pro just to
    get my speed back that I used to have before I wised up and went
    back to CS2.

    I have the latest Wacom drivers for my model - it's the same driver for all Intuos and Cintiq models. Besides, as I said - the performance is perfect in all other software, except Flash. And also as I said - in Flash CS6 the performance is better than CS5.5, but not better than CS3... It is acceptable though, because it's rare that I will draw such fast lines - in my case I can see a clear difference in performance if I draw fast or slow. I have tried to compare results on my older MacBook Pro and I get similar results...

  • Macbook Pro - horrible performance - what can I do???

    Macbook Pro 15"
    Late model 2010 (December)
    2.66 GHz Intel Core i7
    8GB 1067 MHz DDR3 RAM
    500GB HDD (437GB/37GB Mac HDD/Bootcamp)
    Hi,
    When I got my MBP in Dec 2010, it was very snappy running Snow Leopard.
    My initial upgrade to Lion (Apple's version of MS Vista? LOL) had issues, I restored from Time Machine, but eventually got it installed.  Almost immediately, the performance drastically reduced.
    Eventually, I took it into Apple, they re-installed Lion from scratch (wiped the hard disk), and I did a partial restore from Time Machine.  There's no guarantee I didn't regress some system files from my Time Machine backup.
    The install of Mountain Lion was uneventful - the app store upgrade ran fine.
    I was also getting a number of kernel panics, which were eventually isolated to (I think?) the GPU.  Apple replaced the GPU under the Apple Care warrantee.
    So, ever since moving off the original operating system, my MBP has had horrid performance.  Some days worse than others, but lately very bad.
    However, the timing could be a coincidence - I have also installed a number of third party tools (as we all do), and my HDD has 12GB out of 437GB left.  At times it has had < 1GB before I copied files to an external USB drive.  I don't deny my MBP could be bloated.
    Sometimes when I close the laptop lid, then reopen it, the screen never recovers.  5 mins later the display is still black, and I have to cycle power.  Sometimes just tabbing to a new text input field within Safari can take 30 seconds to move to the next field.  Numerous other performance problems, I'm so sick of the spinning beach ball.
    So, with that as background, some questions:
    1) Any general advice on addressing poor performance under OS X 10.8.2?
    2) Are there any *good quality* tools I can use to fix poor performance?  I installed Mackeeper 2012 for about 10 minutes, before further web research convinced me to uninstall immediately.  But I do like the concept, if a reputable company puts out a similar product.  What about Clean My Mac???
    3) Are there any tools available to test my hardware?  I know Apple have them - that's how they detected the bad GPU.  I'd like to run a full diagnostic check of my hardware.
    (However, I also booted into Boot Camp.  Windows 7 was very snappy, with the same hardware available to OS X.  I suspect my problem is software related.  Performance of the Boot Camp images under Parallels 8 is abysmal.  Yes, I know a VM adds overhead, but Windows used to be just fine under Parallels.)
    4) Or should I just take it to the Genius Bar under my Apple Care coverage?  I've got 10 months left on the 3 year warrantee.
    Any other advice more than welcome.  Right now, I'm close to just wiping the disk and installing Windows 7 ;-).  At this point, it really is unworkable, the performance is that bad.  I really *want* to like my Mac and OS X, but lately I think "It Just Works" is just a bunch of marketing hype ;-).
    Thanks,
    Scott

    Thanks for the quick reply...
    1) Can I reinstall Mountain Lion from the recovery partition?  I know I could with Lion; I assume the app store upgrade to Mountain Lion updates the recovery partition?
    2) How do I run a hardware diagnostics on my HDD?  Is there a utility that comes with Mountain Lion, or do I need to go to Apple?
    3) Are there known apps that cause problems?  I totally agree with your advice above - I should have thought of it lol - but it will be a PITA to implement.  I can post a list of my apps if that will help.  Note that the poor performance occurs even when few apps are actually active, and happens shortly after a restart.
    4)  How do I know what a TRUSTED app is?  For example, I've got Chrome, but I've heard it has ahem "issues" on the Mac.  But I don't know if that's the *cause* of the poor performance.
    (Oops...ignore question #2, I'll search for how to do this...)
    In short, if there is a way to shortcut these diagnostics, that would help.  But yeah, I can see that what you suggest will probably what I end up doing ;-/
    Thanks again,
    Scott

  • Horrible Performance in quries

    Hello guys.
    This is Calvin from Korea.
    We are implementing BI 7.0 with ERP 6.0 and facing a some problem regarding BI performance. I checked the parameters for both SAP and DBMS, which is oracle as well as cache. And everything seemed to be fine.
    Anyway, there are two problems,
    The first one is...
    When we choose the variable, program CL_RSR_VAR===... executed quite a long time.
    and the second one is,
    during the query execution time, those events takes lots of time.

    I tried to find out some solutions by myself but only to fail.
    Your help will be highly appreicated,

    Dear Ravi,
    Thanks for your reply.
    But I don't understand what you wrote down above. We already have variables in these queries... Could you please kindly explain in detail?
    Thanks in advance,

  • Why such horrible performance and unwillingness for Verizon to help?

    I have fios and Internet, TV, five cell phones and terrible performance. I can barely connect from one room to another using wireless. Occasionally it works often substandard strength. When I come home from people's houses the connections are great, even when the connection is from the neighbor next door! I have complained several times. I have BEGGED to have a modern router put in. The router is the original antiquated machine the originally put in. I think it runs on vacuum tubes. Tech support will not swap it out. Meanwhile my neighbor across the street mentions a little problem and, boom, they get a new router. It is still an 802.11g. They want you to pay for an n level router. I pay $600 dollars a MONTH for crumby service with no willingness to help out.
    Can anyone tell me if cable vision has better service? I just got back from my cousin and one of their service guys came over, spent two hours checking things out and went out of his way to verify the service was up to or better than standard. I was very impressed. The verizon guys seem not the sleigh east bit interested in helping but they di want to prove they were smarter than anybody else.
    Any advice or recommendations would be very welcome. Please help. I give up on these corporate thieves. Please don' hesitate to advise. Thanks.

    I'm sorry but I find that very hard to believe. I work with older computers all the time - I volunteer with a charity that gets donated computers and we install either Puppy or Ubuntu on them, depending on vintage. On a P450 with only 320MB almost any machine of that vintage will run like a dog with Ubuntu and Compiz would be a no go. It would be using the swap partition all the time and the graphics will be pretty slow going.

    Of course, this was three years ago.  Probably wouldn't go so well now.
    To start helping you diagnose your problems please reboot your computer and before you start loading software show us the output to "ps aux", "free", "df -h", "lspci" and "lsmod" so we can check your system basics. You could paste all those over to pastebin.ca if you wish.

  • U410 horrible performance out the box

    Got a new U410 with Windows 8, 1TB hard drive, 24GB SSD, 8 GB RAM.
    The performance has been terrible out of the box, freezes constantly on start up and after sleeping as well. Can take around 10-15 minutes or longer before it warms up a bit and provides acceptable performance but it can still lock up at a later time.
    I did a factory reset, optimize and defrag of hard disk. There does not seem to be any app as a resource hog. Someone suggested I may have a faulty HD although like I said, the defrag did not come up with any bad sectors.
    I also thought booting would be a lot faster with the 24GB SSD but it's no faster than my other laptop with no SSD.
    Any suggestions as t what I should try or have we been shipped a lemon? Should I be requesting a replacement? Surely I should work fairly speedily out of he box?
    Thank you.

    Unfortunately, the only way to get the best performance out of any new laptop is to perform drive reformat and clean install Windows like I did on my y470. Also, I prefer to install drivers from the manufacturer's website rather than Lenovo's as much as possible. If I remember correctly the only drivers I installed from Lenovo are "Management Engine Interface" and Lenovo Energy Management. Everything else came from Nvidia, Intel, JMicron, Renesas, Realtek, etc.
    In the process, I lost some of the Lenovo apps that I didn't need like Veriface, One Key Theater etc. If you value these programs, you have to deal with the lower performance of the factory reset. However, if you don't need the extras that Lenovo provides with their factory reset, you can expect around 18 second boot time and 6 second shutdown time on a spinning hard drive with fresh Windows install. Above all, you will rarely, if ever, encounter freezing. Nothing beats the stability and reliability of a good clean install.
    This is for Windows 7. For Windows 8, you should get less than 10 second boot time, and less than 6 second shutdown time.
    Since you are using WIndows 8 with U410, I suggest you follow this Lenovo thread so that you get your SSD properly working, and you should get SSD like performance due to SSD caching. SSD Caching doesn't take effect until you have used your commonly accessed programs frequently.

  • Horrible performance due to disk writes

    Whenever there is a high volume of disk writes in the internal SATA2 drive, everything comes to a crawl, and most programs are barely responsive. If I run the same tasks but work from an external USB drive, there is zero negative impact on system performance! (SMART status is Verified)
    I have trouble believing that this should be expected behaviour; basically, whenever I am downloading several files at the same time, it takes the whole system hostage, even though the CPUs are at least 90% idle.
    What could be going so wrong?

    (oh, good, just noticed it was a reference to a USB stick, which is not what I was using.)
    Say I'm downloading 5 OS distro DVD torrents, all at the same time, each anywhere from 600 MB to a few GBs, so for the next hour or so, there will be non-stop writing to the disk as torrents' "parts" are downloaded and saved. after a few minutes there will be plenty of connections opened, and lots of activity, and, next thing you know, most other applications will stop responding. oddly, the only application that still responds well is uTorrent itself.
    Most times when I need to get updates and the like, I launch it all and go do something else, but instead one time I continued surfing the web, and was having a lot of delays, so I started wondering if it was a bit much on the network side (Cable ISP), but it wasn't. Then I tried to watch a video, and that was a nightmare all together.
    I have a habit of running other OSes under VMWare Fusion, and I'd noticed a similar performance problem when I'd run defrag on the VM guests, which I'd accepted as normal in that case, but it caused me to try and use an external USB (magnetic) drive as the target of the torrents, to see if there would be a difference, and boy was there one! I even moved my VMs to the external drive, and running defrag on those no longer caused delays. So, this makes me wonder if there's something wrong with either (perhaps) the internal drive, or the BUS, or something.
    Just in case I'm still not being clear:
    I use uTorennt to download 7 torrents of 700 MB each, on the internal drive, and watch any other task crawl. However, do the same thing, while saving to an external drive, and everything is fine.
    I hope I'm making more sense (and thanks for the interest).

  • Horrible performance with 10g EM / Dataguard on Windows

    Intstalled 10g EM with Dataguard a few weeks back. Just recently started to notice terrible performance e.g. memory, paging .... Nothing new has been added to the machine so I'm pretty stumped as to why this is happening all of a sudden. Are there any unecessary services that can be shut down within Oracle. I've been getting this msg all day.
    Also my Total IO/sec is 286.23
    Name=OC4J_EM
    Type=OC4J

    I'm assuming you meant 10g Grid Control because I see you talked about the Oracle Container for Java. I do see a lot of paging in my case and that's because I didn't have other disks to separate the software install from the repository. The installation document does talk about that.
    The services critical to GC are Process Manager, ASControl and the agent. The other services in my installation are all set to manual so they didn't need any tweaking. Not sure what other services DataGuard will add...Did you DataGuard your GC repository then for redundancy?
    Do you see any errors on the Management System tab? Does rebooting the server help at all?

  • Encore Horrible Performance

    I'm running Encore CS6 on a MacBook Pro with Retina Display. I have never had an app perform as poorly as this software is. When I load a project I get a beachball, when I right click I get a beachball, whenever I do anything I get a beachball.  I opened Activity monitor and when this happens the app goes "Not Responding" and is using about 70-100% processor. This is just ridiculous, It performs better on my Win7 Desktop but I don't have Photoshop on my desktop... Are there any performance tweaks I can perform?

    A mac user will need to comment, but this does not sound normal. You can get long delays on import of some material while Encore checks it out, but the other things yoiu are seeing sound like an install problem, a permissions issue, or a conflict with other software.
    This is not your OS, rigth? But it is the only mac specific document for these sorts of issues that I have seen, and has some general suggestions that are relevant.

  • Horrible Performance on MBP

    Hey Guys,
    I was recommended to post my Topic here again.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9384292#9384292
    Hope someone can help.

    I'm pasting your xbench results you posted in the other thread since its awkward and frustrating to be bouncing back and forth between this thread and another one.
    Results 56.49
    System Info
    Xbench Version 1.3
    System Version 10.5.6 (9G55)

    Your disk is not out of line with my numbers if you're having performance problems its not disk related.
    Here's my xbench score to compare, now keep in mind that I ran this test while having a ton of programs so my score will be artificially low, that is I'm running rapidweaver VMware Fusion, quicktime pro, textmate, itunes, safari, mail, etc.

    so given that my numbers appear much higher then yours ( I have a 2.53 MBP and I have no idea what you have) you may want to run the Apple Hardware Test to make sure everything is running as it should. If that checks out a possible call/visit to your apple store, especially if its a brand new MBP
