W700 and 3D is here - and it's AWESOME!

I promised myself that I wouldn't post about this until I felt like doing a full review.
Well, I can't help myself! I don't feel ready for a full review yet, but I will do it, along with links so you can decide for yourself whether or not your machine is capable and what hardware/software you want. I did a lot of research before I dove in. My setup works extremely well, but that isn't to say it's the best. Here's a list of the pieces I have:
1) W700, Nvidia Quadro FX 3700M (1gb video mem), Intel Core2 Extreme QX9300, 8mb system memory, and 2
Samsung MMCRE28G8MXP-0VB SSD's and the Blu-Ray player for the ultra-bay
 2) Nvidia 3D Vision Kit (glasses, emitter, etc. - I'll talk about this stuff in another post)
 3) AlienWare (Dell) AW2310 23' monitor (true 120Hz refresh rate with DVI-D and HDMI input - basic resolution
      1920x1080)
 4) CyberLink PowerDVD 10 Ultra (plays Blu-Ray and DVD disks, music, videos, etc). This software is not
necessary for 3D. It does convert your DVDs to 3D now, and will support the Blu-Ray specification for 3D
     playback
I purchased all of the requisite hardware and software without having ever seen 3D, much less trying it on a machine that it hadn't (to my knowledge) been tried on before.
I'll start with this - Nvidia installs some extra stuff in the "Nvidia Control Panel" for 3D. One of the things is a "test configuration" button. I turned up the depth to maximum (again, explained later in review), turned on the monitor, put on my glasses - and was promptly AMAZED. I was about two feet from the monitor. There was one point in the test where a spinning Nvidia logo was ONE INCH FROM MY FACE! Perfect focus. I actually tried to touch it.
You have to have the correct machine to start with, but mine is not the only configuration that will work (obviously some models of the 701 will and there are probably others).
I bought the Batman game because it was highly recommended by Nvidia. It was extraordinary AFAIC.
If any of you are familiar with "DirecTV2PC", which is software that allows you to watch recorded programs on your PC that you have on your DirecTV DVR/HD-DVR then you are in for a surprise! DirecTV is now showing, on a limited number of channels, 3D HDTV. This free software from DirecTV supports it! The first broadcast is one of the soccer matches this Thursday, June 11th on ESPN-3D.
I'm going to stop this ranting now, but I'll be back with more. Do remember that you must be sure that your machine is basically capable (video and CPU) and that you get the right equipment. If you do - you're gonna like it!

Thanks for sharing this with us, Mark! I'm curious about how much you've roughly spent in total on 2), 3), and 4)?

  • I have been using an Iphone for work and downloaded an awesome book, how can I continue to read this on my pc?

Is there any one out there that can answer my question...

This is too bad.  I downloaded a book to my PC that I can't seem to open on my PC for the reasons stated above.
Funny... no where during my sign up / sign in did I see anything really obvious that stated or warned me in advance.  It must be buried in the rules & agreements somewhere.  Too bad... I'm not planning on getting an iPad or any other device soon so I guess iTunes won't be getting much if any business from me.
At the risk of sounding like a Luddite,  this is foolishness and a waste of my time and energy.
Good bye iTunes... there's other services more appropriate for me.

  • W700/W700ds and Windows 7 64bits drivers???

    Hi everyone
I ordered a W700, and I am running Windows 7 Ultimate RTM (64 bits) for weeks. Now that it's finally "official", it says on almost every page for 64bit drivers, and also for TVT (ThinkVantage Technologies) software that The W700/W700ds 64bits edition only supports Windows 7 Professional.
What is going on? I'm running W7 Ultimate (64 bit) and don't know what to do. I guess I cannot upgrade yet?

have you tried downloading and installing the updated drivers and apps?   if so, did they give you a warning or did they install without any complaints?

  • After 1 year of use FCPX crawls and unusable?

I purchased the 1st version of FCPX one year ago and produced an awesome 5 minute music video with no problems whatsoever on a OSX 10.6.8 Mac Pro Quad Core with 6mb of Ram, 3 one TB hard drives (1 for the system, 1 for Video, 1 for Audio).  it worked great and loved it.  My second project was a 2 minute production and had no problems either.  But after the 2nd project all of a sudden FCPX just became a slug, so I installed more Ram (16mb).  But this did not make any difference.  I deleted the prefs with no change, I have the current version 10.0.5 installed with no change, I installed Event Manager X with no change.  I installed MacKeeper and cleaned out 2.1 GB of junk with no change, I Have plenty of room on all HardDrives. I have not installed Lion because everyone says it slows down FCPX  This Mac Pro is only dedicated to Video production so It is not cluttered with other Apps.  Every thing else works great except FCPX!  Help

This is my pet checklist for questions regarding FCP X performance - you may have already addressed some of the items but it's worth checking.
Make sure you're using the latest version of the application - FCP X 10.0.5 runs very well on my 2009 MacPro 2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with 16 GB RAM and ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 MB. I run it with Lion 10.7.3.
First, check that you have at least 20% free space on your system drive
If you have not already done so, move your Projects and Events to a fast (Firewire 800 or faster) external HD. Make sure the drive's formatted OS Extended (journalling's not required for video). You should always keep at least 20% free space on the Hard Drives that your Media, Projects and Events are on.
Check the spec of your Mac against the system requirements:
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/specs/
Check the spec of your graphics card. If it's listed here, it's not suitable:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4664
If you are getting crashes, there is some conflict on the OS. Create a new (admin) user account on your system and use FCP X from there - if it runs a lot better, there's a conflict and a clean install would be recommended.
Keep projects to 20 mins or less. If you have a long project, work on 20 min sections then paste these into a final project for export.
If you ever experience dropped frames, I strongly recommend you use ProRes 422 Proxy - it edits and plays back like silk because the files are small but lightly compressed (not much packing and unpacking to do) - but remember to select 'Original or Optimised Media' (FCP X Preferences > Playback) just before you export your movie, otherwise it will be exported at low resolution.
If you have plenty of processor power, for the ultimate editing experience, create Optimised Media - most camera native files are highly compressed and need a great deal of processor power to play back - particularly if you add titles, filters or effects. ProRes 422 takes up much more hard drive space but is very lightly compressed. It edits and plays back superbly.
Hide Audio Waveforms at all times when you don't need them (both in Browser and Storyline / Timeline). They take up a lot of processor power. (Use the switch icon at the bottom-right of your timeline to select a format without waveforms if you don't need them at the moment, then switch back when you do).
Create folders in the Project and Events libraries and put any projects you are not working on currently, in those folders. This will help a lot. There's a great application for this, called Event Manager X - for the tiny cost it's an invaluable application.
    http://assistedediting.intelligentassistance.com/EventManagerX/
Unless you cannot edit and playback without it, turn off Background Rendering in Preferences (under Playback) - this will help general performance and you can always render when you need to by selecting the clip (or clips) and pressing Ctrl+R.
The biggest single improvement I saw in performance was when I upgraded the RAM from 8 GB to 16.

  • "Apple Mail To Do" and IMAP

I have an IMAP email account (with fastmail) that I use with Apple Mail (Version 3.5 (929.4/929.2)), and Mail has been creating (and recreating) an 'Apple Mail To Do' folder in my folder list.
    http://problems.physci.sent.com/imapscreenshot
    http://problems.physci.sent.com/mailscreenshot.png
I deleted the folder from my IMAP web-account, and when I quit and reopen Mail, all is well at both Mail.app and my IMAP web-account. No folders/subfolders in IMAP.
But that is only until the next time I reopen Mail. The next time I reopen Mail, Mail recreates a new copy of the "Apple Mail To Do" folder, but now nested within two "Inbox" folders (on my IMAP account). In attempt to solve this, I've tried various settings and changes and in so doing, I've tried to delete the folder(s), but all attempts were to no avail. Each time Mail reopens, the "Apple Mail To Do" keeps getting created and nested inside two, three, four, five, six, and more "Inbox" folders.
    http://problems.physci.sent.com/imapscreenshot
Changing the preference settings in Mail to store Notes and To Do's "on my mac" has no influence on these happenings. My IMAP Path Prefix preferences is set to: INBOX. I'm afraid to change it to anything else because the last time I did that, Mail froze up my Inbox, automatically moved emails to unintended folders, and gave me an annoying pop-up every single time I opened Mail, asking me if I wanted to change my IMAP path preferences.
I also noticed that when an Apple Mail To Do is created, I lose the unread mail count of my Inbox.
    http://problems.physci.sent.com/InboxUnreadCount
But my dock unread count is accurate.
    http://problems.physci.sent.com/DockUnreadCount
I would love to use Apple Mail To Do, and I think for its integrated functionality (to be able to select a sentence in a particular email and make a To Do), it requires a folder in my IMAP email account. I don't know why it creates nested folders, but more importantly I'm just not sure how to go about resolving this. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

In case someone else finds themselves in the same spot as I was, a fastmail pro (Rob) found a solution for this that works quite well. It's a long winded one, and I unfortunately don't quite have the time to go into all the details here, but it involves leaving the IMAP path prefix as "blank", and using alternate namespace IMAP ports. Rob has this detailed out in his blog at:
    http://blog.fastmail.fm/2008/08/11/alternate-namespace-imap-port-may-help-outloo k-ol-express-apple-mail-and-bis-users/
    and
    http://blog.fastmail.fm/2008/08/28/proxy-servers-for-alternate-imap-port-may-be- useful-for-blackberry-bis-users/
For those that are not familiar with fastmail, imho, it is the way to go for professional imap emails. Lightning fast, 'customizable-galore', extremely reliable, and with an excellent support team. But more importantly they are very mac friendly, and works like awesome with Mac OS X Mail. For example, we have business email accounts hosted at fastmail, and I can share a designated "folder" of emails with 2 (or more) business partners, so much so that if one of us clicks an email, it comes up as being 'read' on all of our accounts, and with many many more functions. Really cool. Works well with family accounts (1, 2 or more users), and is simply customizable like crazy.
    http://www.fastmail.fm/
They also have an awesome beta web-interface with heavy keyboard shortcuts, and they keep enhancing on it, increasing capability, efficiency and functions.
    Beta: http://www.fastmail.fm/beta
Wow, I feel like a fastmail sales rep, heh?
Anyway just wanted to post an update, that's all. Didn't mean to go on a tangent there.

  • HT5772 How do you delete a movie from a local computer without deleting it from the library?  This should be such a simple procedure, but it's not. And while we're at it, why is iTunes NOT one of the dropdown product choices?

All Apple support says about deleting movies from a computer is that you "should" be able to re-download it if you live in the right area.  Well, I'm in the U.S.A. and just deleted one of the movie extra features exactly as described in the support directions.  According to Apple I should be able to re-download this from the cloud at any time, but now I no longer even see the title listed.  That's why I wanted to test their support statements with a Movie Extra instedad of a real movie.  This should be the simplest of tasks to manage, yet they make it extremely difficult.  Why?  I own the movies and I want them to stay in my iTunes library basically forever.  Makes sense, right?  But, I only have so much room on my laptop to store movies that I want to have with me on long trips, etc.  So if I only have the space to store 3 or 4 movies on the disk, shouldn't I have the ability to every once in a while delete one of those movies from my local computer ONLY, NOT my library, so that I can download a different movie?  Yet the first thing iTunes does when you hit the delete key is tell you that it will remove the movie forever from all devices and the library.  So why does support say you can download again any time from the cloud then?  The worse part is, the calamity doesnt stop there.  Wait until you see the message you actually get once you say that yes, you do want to delete the movie (but only because you assume that you really can download it again sometime).  Here is the exact 2 messages you get from Apple, in the same popup box.
Do you want to move the selected movie to the Recycle Bin, or keep it in the iTunes Media Folder?
Only files in the iTunes Media Folder will be moved to the Recycle Bin.
[Cancel]  [Move to the Recycle Bin]  [Keep File]
Is that the most confusing popup or what?  Who develops this kind of software?!?!?!
I have tried it both ways and the only difference is that the file shows up in the Recycle Bin or doesn't.  But in both cases the file name no longer shows in the movie list, so I don't know how to re-download it from the Cloud.  Better hey, if I clicked "Keep File", where is it?  I can't see it anywhere, so where is it kept and what can I actually do with it?
I have to be honest, I love my iPhone and some of the neat features, but when it comes to iTunes, I have never seen a more difficult piece of software to use in my life... and I'm a software developer.  Your Support documentation is actually more confusing than the softwae itself, it's almost as if you don't want people to use the software, just simply buy stuff and listen/watch it, but nothing else.  Seriously, this is the most cumbersome, unfriendly piece of software I've ever seen.  What does it say about Apple iTunes when everyone has to google solutions for how to do something rather than using Apple support documentation.
Seriously disappointed in Apple iTunes and it's never really gotten any better over time.  This is one of the primary reasons I have never moved all of my recording studios and office operations over to an Apple platform.  Hardware and phones are awesome, but your software is either grossly incompetent or intentionally designed to make it all but impossible to use.  Either way, it's worthless to me. We're talking about software that does nothing else but manage media that I already own on multiple devices.  That should be one of the simplest things in the world to do.  Sad... very sad.
While we're at it.... why isn't iTunes listed on the product dropdown below?  Maybe it's not even considered a product, which would explain it's goofiness I guess.

I own the movies and I want them to stay in my iTunes library basically forever.
But in both cases the file name no longer shows in the movie list, so I don't know how to re-download it from the Cloud.
iTunes prefs > Store > Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases.
This will show all your iTunes purchases in your library with a cloud icon down arrow. Click the icon to redownload or click on Play to stream without downloading.
Also see this , -> Download past purchases
and techncially, you don't "own" the movie, You simply have a license to use it.
Yet the first thing iTunes does when you hit the delete key is tell you that it will remove the movie forever from all devices and the library.
Actually, no it does not tell you that.
FYI: You should keep copies of all yoru iTnue spurahses as the labels/movie studios/copyright owners can pull their product at anytime and it won't be available to redownload.

  • My icloud calendar and my wife's are not syncing

Hoping someone can help with this issue.
My wife and I both got my iphones on the day the 6's were released.  With iOS8 installed, we decided to use the new feature of the family iCloud with my existing account being the primary account and her's being attached to the Family account.  We created her a new account and "invited" her to the family account.  All seemed to go good.  Her calendar appeared to sync fine with all of our events that we had already entered.
Last week our son got his basketball schedule of practices and games from now through January 2015, and after entering them for over an hour, we checked to make sure she got the new info on her phone.  She didn't.  NOTE:  I use the Sunrise app for calendar, which syncs with the Apple iOS calendar (which it did correctly - new info is there).  So I checked my iCloud.com account through the PC interface, and all new info was there.  Then I checked her iCloud.com account, and the new info is not there.  I think that if it was on her iCloud calendar it would come to her phone, so probably not a phone issue.  I have used different color codes for the different calendars, and none of the Family info (colors) are on her calendar.
Hoping someone out there may have had a similar issue and can tell me what to do.  Other than go back to a single iCloud account as we had together for years.  I like this new Family iCloud design better - if it will work
    Thanks!

I found out what to do.  All I had to do is Invite her from the Calendar I want to share from the iCloud control panel.  Then she had to accept it and sign in to her iCloud account.  Awesome!

  • Just got an 8 gig Zen MicroPhoto and love it! Just some suggestions tho

Hi everyone, my friend was considering a Zen Vision M and an Ipod video. I kinda suggested the Zen so he got it and absolutely loves it.
After seeing how nice the Zen Vision M is, I jumped on this MicroPhoto when I saw a sale and it is awesome!
The Zen MicroPhoto is a really good device, but just simple firmware stuff could make it a great one.
.) Ability to view pictures + listen to music
2.) Ability to view movies and video (the Muvo has smaller capacity and a screen with less colors and it can? Yet we are buying a nicer mp3 player than the Muvo but can't do video? The Sansa is small as hell and it can. It has the screen, hardware wise it should be able to do it, and if this is added through a firmware update, it won't be on the packaging and thus will not hurt sales of your other products.
I hate it when an awesome product is created and is capable of something and the manufacturer slashes that ability from it intentionally.
Another good example is the Gen III Ford Taurus SHO, its 3.4 liter Yamaha V8 was capable of revving well over 7500RPM and producing more than 30hp. Ford however, even though they had this jewel of an engine, intentionally cut its ability down to 235hp or else they feared it would be faster than their Mustang GT. What a shame, I hate to see that Creative is doing the same with the MicroPhoto.
3.) Ability to record FM with the latest firmware (If this is a RIAA issue, then please provide two firmwares and two download links, one that says "United States Users" and one that says "Non-US users"
4.) Ability to control different aspects of the glowing blue LEDs. They are obviously firmware controlled and can have brightness adjusted since they glow in and out when you have it plugged into the USB cable.
5.) Make it show up on your computer as a removable disk. On all my other MP3 players, it showed up just like a flash dri've and you could drag and drop whatever you wanted onto it, and it would just play whatever files on there it could play. Here, it won't let me drag and drop anything that is copy protected or is a different file type.
I know you can set aside 4 gigs of that for this purpose, but with the size of the files and videos I transfer, it would be nice if I could use all 8 gigs. Perhaps an option to just let the whole thing show up as a removable flash dri've?
*ok... I just tried it and that seems to be working on this computer that is Windows XP SP2 with WMP, but on the school computer that was XP SP2 with WMP0, it would not allow me to do this.

I think you will find that the reason the MicroPhoto is on sale is that it is now a legacy player (it was released before anybody could play video). I doubt very much that any further improvements will be coming....
EQ does have an effect... Maybe you earphones are not working well?
