W701 Lenovo SSD won't start, intermittent problem

specs:
I think of W701 as the model number, but Lenovo considers it to be 4323CTO
It used to have a Lenovo 128 GB SSD as the C drive, with a 360 GB HD for the secondary drive. Now I've replaced the original SSD with a Samsung 512 GB SSD.
Running Windows 8 now, but it was doing the same on 7. It does seem to be a hardware problem.
This is an unusual problem. I posted here a couple of months ago. I have made a bit of progress since then, mostly in finding out what doesn't work.
It used to be an intermittent problem, but now it's frequent. It's happened since the computer was still on warranty, but it was so infrequent then that it wasn't likely to happen while tech was looking at the computer. It seemed pointless to complain or try to get it fixed. Lately it has been getting worse and worse.
It is 3 and a half years old and this has been the only serious problem, so I'm hoping for a way around it. When I press the power button to start it, it takes 2 or 3 seconds for the first visual to come on. It has the Thinkpad, Lenovo and Intel logos on it, and says: 'To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button.'
That's as far as it gets. After that nothing happens, no drive activity at all and nothing I can do but shut it off. There is no response to the mouse or to pressing any key. Pressing the Thinkvantage button also does nothing. It would sometimes do this at least 50 times in a row.
What would get it going in those cases was:
1. leaving it for a few days or a week without touching it or
2. removing the SSD, replacing it with the HD (which would attempt to start but had no OS installed) and then switching back.
On one of these forums, someone described a problem that had some things in common with mine. It turned out his SSD was dying and when he replaced it, everything worked. I thought that might be it and replaced the drive. It worked for awhile but now it started with the same problem. (sigh)
I suppose it might be an intermittent connection between the SSD and the rest of the computer. Replacing that wiring harness would be my next guess but there might be other possibilities. I suppose any small electronic part involved in the start up process could be at fault.
Except for this problem it has mostly been a decent machine. It has a 17 inch, 16:10 screen which might not even be available now and I appreciate that size. I would like to get this restored.
tia

Thank you practical, that struck me as a great idea.
The little problem with it is getting an OS on the drive. I do have an image restore for Win 7, and after that it would take installing 8.1 again, so just a bit of work. But it seems clear to me now that the SSDs were not the problem. I basically agree with your comment:
"It sounds to me more likely, especially given the intermittent difficulties you have had in the past, that there might be an issue with the SATA electronics on the main board -- a tiny crack in a wiring trace, cable not fully seated in a socket (or perhaps contacts a little corroded) a flakey chip somewhere, etc."
I think the most likely possible solution now is to replace the motherboard. I saw someone else with a problem that had something in common with mine; he mentioned that he solved it by doing that. That would fit in with one of your comments. " there might be an issue with the SATA electronics on the main board."
So I started checking around at Lenovo.com and got the part number. I was able to talk to sales twice to confirm that it is the correct part number, and they transferred me to parts to find out about price and availability. Both times the parts person could not hear me, after having a normal conversation with sales. It seems like their phone system has some kind of problem with transfers. I called back 2 more times to let sales know about the problem, and got busy signals.
I had phone problems that I posted about in my T530i laptop problems topic. I had at least 3 calls that could not be completed by their system, and I'm starting to wonder about them getting anything fixed if they can't take care of that.
So I checked out the motherboard at http://www.sparepartswarehouse.com/IBM-Lenovo,Thinkpad,W701,4323000,Laptop,System-Boards.aspx They didn't have one in stock, and all the guy could tell me is that it would be more than $600 if they did get one in. I did appreciate even that much info. It was more than I had been able to get from the other supplier. I did see one on another site while searching that was over $1000 so I expect the $600 is low.
But this is getting seriously discouraging. This might change, but right now I feel like getting a Toshiba or something and just giving up on Lenovo. The prices of new laptops aren't that much now.
But thanks again for your comment. It jolted a bit of thinking, and most of the research I've mentioned in this post.

That's as far as it gets. After that nothing happens, no drive activity at all and nothing I can do but shut it off.  When it first started I was living near the Pacific and humidity was high, about 50$ most of the time. It didn't affect any other computer in the house but seemed to be partly responsible for this problem.
I would take the drives and the dvd player out, open the machine up as much as I could, and draw air through it with a vacuum hose. When I put it together again it usually started first try, but lately this has failed too.
For awhile I was thinking it was a problem with the drive. It wasn't the typical SSD failure, but maybe some weird problem with it. But the next thing I did seems to indicate something else.
I switched the C and D drives. (C is an SSD, D is a HD.) Starting on D didn't have the same problem. It wouldn't go too far because it didn't have an operating system but it was working and looking for a disk it could boot from. Both times I tried this, when I put the drives back where they belonged, the puter did start properly.
Or maybe it is just one of the connecting pins in the wiring from the laptop to C. Hooking up D might have helped to straighten it out, clean it, or whatever. Would I be able to buy the harness that connects C to the laptop and replace it?
The drives are certainly easy add or remove, but I don't know about the wiring. At least the wiring should be a lot cheaper.
So any thoughts or ideas? Anything I haven't been clear enough about?
It has mostly been a decent machine otherwise. I'd be happy to replace both the C drive and the wiring if that would take care of the problem. But I'd have to do those myself as I don't expect I could afford the charges by the tech people.

  • Lenovo Thinkpad T60 with start up problems

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T60 with start up problems.  In order to get the computer to start up, I have to unplug it, remove the battery, re-insert the battery and turn it on, once it starts the start up sequence, I can plug in the power cord.
If I plug the cord in before I push the power button, all of the lights go out, and it does nothing.
I have tried several power supplies, and a new battery, even though the old battery seems to work.
All of the updates are applied, including the latest bios update.
The computer seems to work normally unless it goes into standby, then it just turns off.
Any ideas what could be causing this?
    T60, 2623 KEU, Windows XP SP3

    Hello,
Did you replace the primary battery which snaps into the back, or the internal CMOS/RTC battery inside the unit?

  • Lenovo G510 won't start when battery is on and it's fully charged

Hi there. I have my Lenovo g510 i5 notebook for 10 months, and my battery is wrong. I haven't used it on battery too much, but when I used it, I empty all of it and then charged it when it's turned down. Couple of days ago, the battery was empty I put it to charge, the orange light appears that it's charging, and day after when I put the battery on the notebook won't start, but with the battery and adapter start normally and show that the battery is 100% (fully charged). Why I can't use it on battery? Please help me.

    Hi Kocevski_91,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community!
As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with system not starting with battery in your G510 laptop.
Please remove the battery and connect only adapter and check for the issue, also try to perform a power drain by removing all the external devices connected to the devices and shutdown the system, now remove battery and adapter, press and hold the power button for 30 seconds, connect battery and adapter and check for the issue.
If still the issue persist, perform battery gauge reset, go to power manager select advance mode and select battery tab and click on battery maintenance under this option click perform under battery gauge option. Please perform and reply with results.
Hope this helps. Do post back if issue persists!
    Best regards,

  • Lenovo Z580 won't start after BIOS update

I wanted to update the BIOS of my lenovo Z580 but when it restarted it said "start PXE on IPv4/IPv6". When i booted without LAN internet cable it gave a window with this: boot menu
    HDD
    CD
    IPv4
    IPv6
Oh yeah before you say this in BIOS hdd is ranked higher than IPv4/6
    I'm running Windows 7 SP1 home premium

hi! you probably upgraded to 5FCN95WW BIOS, didn't you? you need to switch boot mode in BIOS. I can't remember which option is enabled by default, but there are only two of them - UEFI and Legacy. you have to change to the one that isn't set by default  by the way, you should know 5FCN95WW is buggy, and downgrading to 5FCN35WW would be your best bet. once you sort the boot problem out, check this guide to downgrade: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and-Z-series/Guide-BIOS-Downgrade-from-5FCN95WW-to-5FCN35WW/td-p/1781189/highlight/false

  • IMac won't Start - weird problem

    Hi
I have an iMac revision B running Tiger. During the last several days I had my government e-mail being forwarded to my mac due to my being out of the office. Apparently the mailbox in my government account became full and the NavyMarineCorps Instranet (NMCI) sent a bunch of messages saying my mailbox was full and blocked me from sending mail until I emptied it. I obviously could not do that until I got back to the office.
Well after that my iMac started acting strange. First the mail froze and then wouldn't let me restart mail mail saying my home folder was full. I shut down my machine hopeing to correct the problem and now it won't restart. It gets the gray screen and twirling ball and then the fans kick in at full speed but nothing else.
    Any suggestions? Help please.

Have you tried booting up from the DVD that shipped with the iMac? Do this and make sure you actually have room on your hard drive. If so, slecet the drive in utilities and repair permissions.
Leave a message with additional details and someone will no doubt be able to assist you.
Also, if you have Applecare, (or maybe within the warranty phone call period) it would be worth a call to Apple tech support and they would be able to assist you as well.

  • Lenovo s10e won't start on battery power alone

    Hi,
I have the following problem with my Lenovo s10e netbook:
On battery power, press the power button, I see a flash on the screen, the blue power led turns on, then off after a few seconds, I can hear a sound from inside the device but it does not turn on.
If I connect the power adapter with the battery connected the device starts up with no problem.
If the battery is not connected and I only use the power adapter I have no problem starting the device.
I tried using a different battery and still have the same issue.
Do you have any idea what is causing this?

    hi icelexy,
    Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.
The unit looks like it's not getting enough power on the battery. If you're using the original 6 cell, 4400 mAh. 11.1 V battery, there's most likely a problem on the charging mechanism at the back part of the unit.
Have you already contacted lenovo to report the issue? (they'll most likely ask you to send the unit in for diagnosis)
    Regards,
    neokenchi

  • OPMN: OC4J_SECURITY won't start - SSO problems

    Hi,
After restoring our infrastructure database and oracle home from backups I am unable to get the OC4J_SECURITY to start. I had to really fiddle around with the restoration and it's possible I mucked something up there. Here are relevant parts of the logs, I'm hoping someone can advise me what the problem is and what I can do to fix it:

  • IBook won't start - serious problem

My G4 iBook is in some serious trouble.
While I was working, my iBook suddenly shut down, and I couldn't reboot it since.
Whenever I try to press the power button, I can hear the fan for a split second, before it turns down by itself.
I am not sure if the motherboard died, or the power system has failed.
    Please help. Thanks.

Do you live near any of the Apple Stores in the Toronto area? If you're not sure, go to the Apple main web page to locate stores in your area. At the bottom left of the page, click on the drop down menu to search for Apple stores. Near the bottom of the list you'll see the Toronto locations. From what you describe, It sounds like a power supply failure. Someone at the Genius Bar (you need to make an appointment in advance) can assist you.

  • Bridge won't launch from CS3 - intermittent problem

Hi folks<br />I dont think I am alone in experiencing this problem as a quick google threw up other sufferers but the suggested fix  update everything at the Adobe website  has not fixed the problem, so I am hoping that someone here can shed some light.<br /><br />Problem 1; Bridge will sometimes not open from CS3 - ie when I click on the icon , or if Bridge is set up to open automatically when CS3 opens, I sometimes get an error message that reads <br /><br />error 2:Photoshop is undefined. Line: 1  ->photoshop10.invoke bridge (false, false, );<br /><br />When this happens Bridge will still open fine from the start menu, so it is not disastrous but is annoying because the keyboard shortcut <shift ctrl W   > won't work either (to close a file in CS3 and bring the Bridge window up on screen) - a similar error message is received when using Shift Ctrl W as when trying to open bridge.<br /><br />Problem 2; the fly out menus will not remain on screen.  Eg if I have a layer and want to access the blend mode menu - if I click on the menu in the layer palette the menu appears for a second and then disappears.<br /><br />Problem 3: If I try to create a new action as soon as I click on the "new action" in the actions palette the word "scripts" appears multiple times in the action - it just produces line after line of this until I click the button to stop the action.<br /><br />Problem 4 (may be related to problem 2 ?); in the crop tool - I can't get the cursor to remain in the width and height boxes - so I can't control the dimensions of the crop (which is currently stuck at my last size of 3 x 4 cm - not much use to man nor beast).<br /><br />Most frustratingly of all  - these are all intermittent problems.<br /><br />Things I have tried - updating CS3 and bridge from Adobe site, opening CS3 and bridge before any other program, not running any other program at the same time, uninstalling and reinstalling (after disabling all antivirus etc stuff), but so far nothing works.<br /><br />I am using a 1 year old Dell PC, lots of RAM and hard drive available, only working from internal drives, no new  hardware or software loaded (although there might have been a windows update - but this occurred after the problems started and has not noticeably changed things).  Windows XP pro. Recently done whole system scan for viruses etc and no problems found.<br /><br />Please help, this has been going on since I loaded CS3 a few months ago and it is driving me nuts.<br /><br />Thanks<br />Amanda D'Arcy

Amanda - One consistent recommendation that has fixed a lot of problems, especially if program worked before, and does not now, is to reset preferences. This is not the same as uninstalling and reinstalling, as the preference file is not affected with that operation.
Since it is intermittent problem this will probably not help, but worth a shot.
When it does not work is there some process that is running, like a anti-virus scan, or?
What about startup scripts in Bridge? Disable any you do not need.

  • HOW TO FIX HD AUDIO/UNKNOWN DEVICE/DEVICE WON'T START LENOVO H320 Win 7 64-bit

Fix for - HD Audio devices won't start or you can't load correct driver. Lenovo H320 - Win 7 64-bit I-3 processor. 5 series/3400 chipset
Here is a working procedure to fix the problem when you install windows 7 64-bit and can't get the correct drivers installed for the HD Audio devices 1)Realtek AC97 HD Audio device id = HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0662&SUBSYS_17AA3604&REV_1001
and 2)Intel HD Audio device id = HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8086&DEV_2804&SUBSYS_80860101&REV_1000 Regards >>> Sucromatic
For an IBM LENOVO 320 with Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium Version download these drivers to a directory in a second partition to prevent this nightmare from happenning in the future.
1)AC 97 high def audio version
Realtek HDA 2.67found on http://wikidrivers.com/wiki/Main_Page or at www.realtek.comon right of screen on homepage and
    2) Intel HD GRAPHIC and HD Audio version
    Intel GMA 15.22.52.2559 (Vista/7) 14.46.8.5387 (XP)
    found on
    http://wikidrivers.com/wiki/Main_Page.
Select your OS and and whether 32 or 64 bit. I recommend the .exe version as it works very smoothly. Uninstall HD AUDIO DEVICE or whatever it is called maybe "unknown device" with ac97 device ID "HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0662&SUBSYS_17AA3604&REV_1001." Afterwards install AC 97 HD Audio Driver.
After install reboot and wait till computer completely starts.
Now uninstall Intel HD Graphics or your graphics device. When you get the uninstall box open, select delete the driver software for this device and then OK. When prompted to reboot select NO and Immediately start the install of the Intel GMA driver. Which installs both the Graphics Adapter and the Intel HD Audio. Reboot when finished and all HD Audio devices will be functional (hopefully). You will now have these versions installed. As shown in device manager/device properties/Driver tab
Now uninstall Realtek AC97 driver you first installed to delete annoying Red Lexmark/realtek icon in Notification area (If your computer shows it after reboot) and windows driver update will install a microsoft driver (shown below)that works without the stupid lexmark red icon. See below. You will now have these versions installed. As shown in device manager/device properties/Driver tab
    High Definition Audio Device
    Driver Provider: Microsoft
    Driver Date: 11/19/2010
    Driver Version: 6.1.7601.17514
    Digital Signer: Microsoft Windows
    IntelR) HD Graphics
    Driver Provider: Intel Corporation
    Driver Date: 1/10/2012
    Driver Version: 8.15.10.2622
Digital Signer: Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatibility Publisher
    Intel (R) Display Audio
    Driver Provider: Intel(R) Corporation
    Driver Date: 8/23/2011
    Driver Version: 6.14.0.3086
Digital Signer: Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatibility Publisher
Voila. Now go to intel and run a driver update scan and it will likely correctly identify your Intel pieces and offer downloads for any that are not current. Good Luck!

it is a user to user forum without any intervention from apple information-wise.I think this question appears and being discussed in another thread

  • Windows Vista won't start or install - firmware or EFI problem?

I am running Snow Leopard on a 2.4GHz MacBook Pro, late 08 - early 09 model. I have been using boot camp to run Vista for the past year with no problem. This morning, I tried to start up Vista and it wasn't working. I got the option key screen to choose between OSX and Vista, but after choosing vista, the cursor blinks once and I get a black screen. The computer is quiet and nothing seems to be running.
At first I thought it was a boot camp problem. So I went into OSX, de-partitioned the drive, and repartitioned it. I then stuck the Vista install disk in, and clicked through the boot camp assistant to reinstall. The computer restarted to begin the reinstall process, but instead of starting the install disk, it did the same thing - a single blip of cursor, and then a black screen.
I'm not technically savvy, but that seems like it's not a Windows problem, but a firmware or EFI problem. The computer will run OSX, but it won't run boot camp and it won't start from a CD-ROM. The only other steps I've taken are to run Software Update and the Disk Utility from Safari. Neither helped. I'm out of warranty and would love to be able to fix it without spending tons of money. Any help is appreciated.

open terminal, run the following command:
    sudo gpt -r show -l /dev/disk0
(press return, enter admin password, press return again)
output should look something like this:
    Betsy7:~ kj$ sudo gpt -r show -l /dev/disk0
    Password:
gpt show: /dev/disk0: Suspicious MBR at sector 0
    start size index contents
    0 1 MBR
    1 1 Pri GPT header
    2 32 Pri GPT table
    34 6
    40 409600 1 GPT part - "EFI System Partition"
    409640 316879664 2 GPT part - "RAPTOR"
    317289304 262144
    317551448 200889128 3 GPT part - "RAPTOR2"
    518440576 262144
    518702720 67287033 4 GPT part - "XP"
    585989753 82582
    586072335 32 Sec GPT table
    586072367 1 Sec GPT header
    The first line:
"gpt show: /dev/disk0: Suspicious MBR at sector 0"
should be identical to mine. If the "Suspicious MBR"
line is missing, then it is a GPT problem, which indicates
that the MBR information is missing or more likely corrupt.
also the second and third lines will read:
    start size index contents
    0 1 PMBR
    instead of:
    start size index contents
    0 1 MBR
If the MBR info in the GPT partition is corrupt or missing,
then (obviously) Windows won't be bootable.
The only tool reliably capable (that I know of) of repairing (rebuilding) the GPT/EFI
without wiping off all partitions and repartitioning the drive
    is iPartition:
    http://www.coriolis-systems.com/iPartition.php
The command line program "gpt" is incomplete, so use
    it at your own risk:
    BUGS
The development of the gpt utility is still work in progress. Many necessary features
are missing or partially implemented. In practice this means that the manual page,
supposed to describe these features, is farther removed from being complete or useful.
As such, missing functionality is not even documented as missing. However, it is believed
that the currently present functionality is reliable and stable enough that this tool can be used
without bullet-proof footware if one thinks one does not make mistakes.

  • Macbook w/ whole slew of problems...Won't Start Up, Disk Utility Can't Repair Disk, Horizontal Lines on Screen, Etc.

I purchased my Macbook in the summer of 2011 and before it went berserk it was running Mavericks. 3 years later, it's finally seemed to have run its course.
It won't start up normally and it won't start up on safe boot. Attempting to use disk utility to repair the disk only gives me the message: "Disk utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible." There are also horizontal lines across the start screen (before it inevitably shuts down) and the screen looks very faintly purple-ish/off-colored.
This actually didn't come out of the blue. On Monday, my macbook suddenly froze, went white, and beeped three beeps repeatedly. I restarted it and backed up all my important work files and set up an appointment at the genius bar for Friday once work ended. It remained buggy during this process with the beeps returning an occasionally a blue screen popping up.
Unfortunately, there wasn't enough space to back up my important photos and by the time I returned on the next day with an external hard drive to store them on, my macbook would no longer turn on.
Is there anything I can do to bring my macbook back to life? Ideally I'd like for it to last one more year before I graduate college. Is it still salvageable, and if so, is it worth salvaging?

I hate to spread gloom, but that computer has serious problems. The only people who can diagnose the problem(s) are technicians. I would take it back to the Apple store for further testing.

  • Classic won't start, can't upgrade, and other problems...

There's something not quite right with my Mac, and I can't quite pinpoint it. Because of this, I'm not even certain I'm posting this in the right forum! Here's the situation:
I have a PowerMac G4, upgraded with a an extra hard drive, an ATI Radeon Pro graphics card, a Sonnet Duet G4 Dual 1.8GHz processor, and (as of today, prior to this 10.4.7) am running OSX 10.4.8.
When I got the machine, it came with OS 9.1 installed. I later upgraded to 9.2.2, and then eventually to OSX. My Classic system folder stayed at 9.2.2
About 10 days ago I installed the Sonnet processor upgrade. In order to do so, I had to rejig my system a bit, as the installer for the upgrade only works in 9.2 and not Classic (yeah, bad call on Sonnet's part).
I partitioned my Back-Up drive, and installed 9.2 on it, installed the software for the processor, and then the processor itself. After checking everything worked, I then unpartitioned my Back-Up drive and removed OS9.2.
Although the processor works fine, and has doubled the speed of most tasks, ever since it was installed, I have been prone to crashes. Most often when working with large files in various applications such as Photoshop.
Also, Classic won't start now. I hardly ever use Classic these days, only for one or two tiny programs I could live without, but the fact that it refuses to start is niggling me. I reinstalled OS9.1 from my original disk, and now I can't upgrade to 9.2: all that happens is I get a message saying that I have 9.1 and that it is recommended I upgrade to 9.2! But Classic won't open, so I can't upgrade to 9.2.
The next thing that's started happening is that my broadband connection keeps dropping. This never happened before. This is happening so frequently it's really annoying; the only thing that cures it is a restart, but restarting 10 times a day isn't funny. I'm using an Alcatel Speedtouch ADSL modem. This has worked fine for over a year.
Yesterday I tried setting up a wireless connection with a Belkin router, replacing my USB modem, so my wife can use her Windows laptop to surf from the same broadband connection (my Mac doesn't need to be wireless enabled itself). But this hasn't worked, even though we followed the instruction manual exactly. I suspect that the reason this hasn't worked was because of the underlying problem on my Mac, whatever it is. I've gone back to using the Speedtouch modem to connect to the internet for now.
I've just today done a complete system reinstall of OSX 10.4, and downloaded the upgrade to 10.4.8, in an effort to solve this. Unfortunately, my Mac still seems to be in the same state and it hasn't solved anything. Classic still won't open, the connection still keeps dropping, and I'm almost at the point of kicking the **** thing through a window! Please, has anyone got any bright ideas? I don't know where to start....
    G4 Digital Audio   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi, thanks for responding.
I've made a couple of changes, double-checked everything, and I have to say that now 10.4.8 has been on my machine for a few days, it's a lot more stable. No crashes. Maybe it just needed to "settle in", ha ha. I also got a router and went wireless, something I needed to do so my wife could use her laptop to get online. This seems to have solved the connection dropping.
So the only thing left is not being able to open Classic. I think maybe you're right, and the new processor doesn't like Classic. But, to tell the truth, I hardly ever use Classic anymore, and I can live without it. So I think I'll leave everything as it is for now, unless something major happens. I spent nearly £500 on the processor upgrade, and it has doubled the speed of my Mac: I really don't want to have to take it out:-)

  • Problem on adobe reader X, it won't start

    Hallo guys.
I've a problem on 3 pc in my company.
When you double-click on the adobe reader X icon, the program won't start, no error message, no events in windows, absolutely nothing at all.
The systems affected are windows 7 64bit, the user is a local administrator.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Please let me know the following:
    1. The exact version of Adobe Reade on your system. You can get the same by clicking on Help > About Adobe Reader.
    2. Do you get a process in the task manager by the name of AcroRd32.exe when you double click on a PDF on these machines?
    3. Are you able to launch Adobe Reader as a standalone application without trying to view any PDFs?
    Thanks
