WAAS 4.1.1c print optimisation

Print optimisation is turned and the graphs show a optimisation of traffic reduction up to 90%. This great of course, but why are users still complaining about slow print jobs. The print server is located centrally and behind a 4Mbit WAN link.
Would'nt is be better to use the local WAAS CUPS server anyhow?

The centralized print option does have performance impacts from WAN bandwidth and latency factors, so it will definitely be slower the LAN printing. Even reducing the bw by 90%, all the packets still have to get to the print server, be processed, and return over the WAN to the printer. I would also have the print server admins double check that the server is running OK and is sized appropriately for extra print queues. Another thing I ALWAYS check is speed/duplex settings on the server/switch, WAE/switch, and printer/switch. I have seen a lot of times where a mismatch there really shows up more with WAAS then without it as optimized traffic may have to back off to wait for a client to catch up.
If you are starting to explore local options of printing, I always start with the Windows on WAAS option running on a virtual blade. This is great if you have the hardware, however requires the WAVE appliances. This is not an option for everyone, so I would look at the Samaba server last. It is deployed at quite a few of my customers, but can be rather cumbersome to administrate. It definitely works, but it is considered legacy going forward in new code.

WAAS-Branch applications not being 'optimised'.

There is TCP based banking application that is running on port 7777(runs on an Oracle dataabase).The application is run from their servers at Head office and all branches are accessing the application.
We have defined a custom policy on the Central Manager for applications accessing this port-Full optimization(TFO,DRE & LZ).
When the application is launched on a user PC and the output taken from the central manager,full optimization is taking place with compression levels of over 70%.The problem is the branch users accessing the application at the branch dont feel the benefit of WAAS-in any case it takes the same time to load the same application
The link is a 128kbps leased line-with an avarage RTT of 70ms.We are using inline method of interception.
Optimization for SQL(Oracle) is over 2 times on the central manager.
Any suggestions of what needs to be done to improve this?so we can have a feel of an optimised WAN.

WAAS optimisation between different WAAS OS versions

Hi,
We are replacing WAAS devices WAVE - 7371 with WAVE - 7541. There are 6 WAAS devices at this location and we have already replaced one of existing 7371 with 7541. The 7541 are running OS 5.0.3 as we are running OS 4.4.7 on WAAS CM and WAAS devices at other locations (200+) we have not yet enabled wccp on the new device and not registered this device in WAAS CM.
In next few days, we have to upgrade all the 7371 with 7541. I would like to know , if the traffic optimisation will happen between the WAAS devices running 2 different WAAS OS versions.
I don't want to downgrade the OS on 7571, WAAS devices in other location will be upgraded to OS 5 after few months.

Unfortunately, we cannot hold replacing the WAVE 7371 devices till the upgradation of WAAS CM. As we need to return them to the vendor .
As a work arround, can I replace them with 7541 and enable optimisation without registering the WAVE 7371 in the WAAS CM,till the we get approvals for upgrading the WAAS OS ver 5 on remaining ( 200 +) devices including the WAAS CM
It will still optimise the traffic between WAAS devices at other locations right ?

WAAS Reporting

Hi All,
We currently have WAAS deployed in a production network and we are trying to understand the traffic reporting on the WAAS Central Manager.
So when we look at the traffic summary report it shows original traffic over the last hour and optimised traffic over the last hour, does the original traffic mean the amount traffic that has arrived at the WAAS device? and the optimised traffic is what has left the WAAS device? How do i know what percentage was cached/compressed/accelerated?
Also i exported this from a WAE device and im trying to interpret original in and optimised out? can somebody clarify this?

I believe that the 'original traffic' indicates the amount of data that would have been sent/needed had the WAAS no been in place. The 'optimised traffic' is the actual amount of data that was sent. The difference in the two numbers is the savings that in bandwidth that the WAAS gave you.

Error message trying to enable WAAS Express

I have one location that is giving me fits trying to enable WAAS express. The three before it went fine but I think this may be related to the fact that this one location is currently configured to support COS. The message I receive when issueing the waas enable command is

When you first enable WAAS express on a device, it will define a set of policies for traffic optimization. Among those, there is one called BGP, which is conflicting with the current one and as a result, enabling WAAS fails and the error you saw is displayed
To solve this issue, you will have to change the configuration of your device to ensure that there are no classes or policies with the same names as the ones that WAAS will configure.

Landscape option Greyed out in Page setup

Hi
I am using Crystal reports Product version 11.0.0.1830.
I have to edit an existing report, and have done successfully on a number of reports already, but it involves adding a lot more columns to the report, therefore making it too large for paper.
So far I have gone in to Page setup, and clicked the 'No Printer (Optimise for screen display) and changed the orientation to landscape. This has worked for 2 reports.
The third is basically the same report, but when I open page setup, the No Printer option is already ticked, but the landscape orientation option is greyed out, and portrait selected.
Is there somewhere else that this could be set that overiddes this. All the reports have the same printer settings, so I can't see this being the issue.

Hi
I have worked this out.
For some reason the server was setting the default printer to be the Microsoft Office Document Image Writer, which overides any setting in the report.
setting a normal printer to be the default printer has worked.

WAAS - WAE slow Printing

Hi All;
I appreciate your expertise in this case regarding Cisco WAAS and WAE devices and their printing services/capability. As i am aware WAAS printing services is done via CUPS (Common UNIX Printing services)
I have an issue with WAAS printing; I just recently set up WAE device as print server and works fine but the problem as per below:
Problem:
Printing is real slow, for example if I was to print to same printer being hosted by windows print server i.e. windows 2000 (Yes I know OLD real OLD but they still use it!!) I would be able to do it in about 5 seconds, if I was to setup the same printer on WEA device it would take in between 30-60 seconds just to process it, also for instance if I was to right click on printer and check properties tab on W2K print server it takes about 3 seconds on WAE it may take up to 30 seconds sometime more.
What I have done:
I have setup and used as test printer is HP 9500MFP (socket://10.36.9.xx:9100) and I have used both drivers PCL and PS and
I have published the printer in Active Directory
I have checked the setting on both the WAAs and WAE device but I cannot find anything that may indicate where I can priorities printing traffic or optimize it. I made sure i have associated the driver and initailised it fine
I have also tried to tweak with printer properties and driver but no hope.
I have read the Cisco white_paper_c07-502183 and printingconfigwaas paper but I could not see anything mentioning anything about optimizing print queues etc, NOT sure if I had missed it or misinterpreted it and if so then please direct me or IT IS THE LIMITATION OF THE HARDWARE!!

Environment:
Number of pilot users only 5 and all 5 not happy at all!!! Documents printed is mix of the two, Windows word docs and PDF docs
The WAAS and WEA devices are Cisco 474 and 274 respectively, the 274 will be used on branch offices and 474 is in main office (Head office) that I am currently setting up
Note/Hint: I have noticed under accelerations on the WAAS Central manager, policies, classifiers tabs etc and I am not sure if I need to define policy in there to make it any faster and if so how would I go about it.
I have also included to images for you ease of understanding my situation

As for the Legacy Printing services, i think the answer is Yes; i have attched snapshot of WAAS configuration section and highlighted in Yellow is the printing section, also it shows traffic in percentage wise (far right) if it helps. If this is what you are after let me know and if so then is this the cause of the problem? If so was it improved in the later version?
I will be looking into the troubleshooting guide you have provided while you study this information, if in anyway you can provide more info based on what i have provided please let me know and i will act on it immediately i.e. if software version out of date then i will upgrade etc

Sure, I'd be happy to.
This enhancement bug is filed to see if we can optimize the number of messages printed to the CONSOLE during the upgrade process. Specifically, during the migration process, all static statements are migrated, but they must also be compared with nat 0 ACL statements - which indicate do NOT NAT. If there is an overlap with the ACEs (which indicate what not to NAT) and the static statements, then a message like the following will be printed.
WARNING: MIGRATION: ACE converted to real IP/port values based on
dynamic/static Policy NAT. The new ACE(s) need to be checked for enforcing policy NAT ACL
permit ip host 10.5.2.1 host 10.7.4.8
Now, if you have thousands of ACEs in your NAT 0 statements - which overlap with static statements, then you will get one of the above warning messages for each overlapping ACE. This can cause the migration to take longer, as each message must be printed to the 9600 baud Console port.
The bug is filed to see if this can be enhanced.

Macbook Air won't detect Apple TV or wireless printer

I purchased a Macbook Air with Mavericks a couple of months ago and had a wireless HP Photosmart printer, which I set up on the macbook. The machine recognised it over the wireless network and then all of a sudden one day I could not print to it. So I removed it to try a reinstall and the macbook would not detect it again after that. I have had to buy a cable to physically connect the printer to the machine when I need to print or scan.
Then I recently got my hands on an Apple TV a couple of weeks ago and it is working fine on the network, I can mirror the iPad on it but when it comes to the macbook, the Airplay Display is showing "No device detected". However, when I open iTunes and all of the Home Sharing is enabled etc (I have followed all of the guidelines to enable all of the settings for sharing ...), I go into Computers on the Apple TV and it attempts to load my iTunes library for a couple of minutes, after which time it says it could not connect.
I'm basically wondering if there is some setting on the macbook that I can't find that may need to be changed to allow me to see devices over the wifi at home.
I've been looking for a while but may just be looking in the wrong places. Any help appreciated for an Apple Noob

Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.
Check AirPlay is turned on on the Apple TV (turn it off and on if it already is)
Check that both devices are on the same network (Settings > Wifi, on the mobile device and Settings > General > Network, on the Apple TV).
Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
Restart your mobile device.

HP 5150 usb connected to Windows XP Pro PC-But want to print from PBG4

My HP 5150 isa connected via USB to the back of my desktop PC running Windows XP Pro....I already haave it connected to a network (linksys wireless router) along with a 2nd PC Dell Desktop and both my Dell and VIAO print ok. But now that i waant to print from my PBG4 via Airport i can't. My MAC doesnt recognize the network and visa versa.....but my MAC is connected to the network and can view and transfer files.....
another example...when i manually set up my MAC, i would try to print and one page would print approx 7 pages....I was told due to post script print driver????
I simply have no clue and dont know if i need parallels or a new printer?
PLEASE HELP........

That document was helpful in confirming I had the printer setup properly in windows. However my problem still remains. I think the issue may just well be the printer and the way to solve this is getting a different one.
Any other tips? Otherwise I may call it a day on this one.

Problem with HP Officejet Pro 8500 printer: Ink is vanished without any prints due to cleanups.

The printer HP Officejet Pro all-in-one 8500A A910 cleans printheads every time I turn it on. printer was updated with the lastet driver but my yellow,cyan,magenta inks gets vansihed without taking any colour prints.I take only BLACK prints(less than 500) and do scans.
This is worse printer i have ever used. It is using inks while clean up at startup or in between.Frustating thing is that It is using ink even during SCANS. Now, i really doubt the intellegence of designers of hp to such a big BUG.
Please update the driver so that during startup it will ask for SCAN or Print OR Clean the printheads when first print is given and addition to optimise the cleanups.

I understand you have an Officejet 8500 A910 that is running the clean printhead function each time you turn it on. I will do my best to assist you with this.
The reason the printer keeps running the clean printhead function is self maintenance. The printer is detecting an issue, so it will continue to run the clean printhead function until it's not detecting an issue. I would suggest you follow through this Fixing Ink Streaks, Faded Prints, and Other Common Print Quality Problems to help clean out any ink build up and things like that. I'd also recommend that you manually clean your printheads to remove any build up there as well.
Finally, it's best to have your printer plugged directly to a wall outlet. If it's not already in one, please move it.

Printing error: The document could not be printed. There are no pages selected.

I know this has been asked multiple times by different people with different scenarios but none of the troubleshooting has yet worked for me.
I have a PDF document that has been exported directly out of InDesign that gives me the above message. If I print the document one page at a time, it prints just fine. But if I print it as a whole document, or if I select a subset of pages, it gives me the No Pages Selected error (even when said subset of pages will print individually). I have tried exporting the document using various settings, I have tried converting any embedded documents to images first, I've copied the original InDesign file and tried exporting out of the copy, I have saved the PDF as an optimised PDF with all private application data removed etc, I've tried printing off other computers, I have even tried some of the apparent fixes that have worked for other users. Nothing has worked so far. All other documents that I print work fine, it is quite literally a single PDF that will not print.
I'm running Creative Cloud for PC and all drivers are up to date.
Any ideas?

Setting that makes black text look colour to a printer

A quick sorry for not being totally on the ball with indesign (cs4), so please help me with simple wording if you can help as I am not a professional.
I created a colour booklet which was fine until I was asked to do it all again but this time with the outside cover being colour and the rest of the pages inside black and white. so this I did by changing all text, boxes, strokes etc in to black (not rich black just 100%K) and ran the jpgs through Photoshop to make them greyscale, so far so good. At this stage everything was as I needed it to be so I hit the export and saved a PDF version and sent the file. Now for the reason for doing this. My friend soon realised that printing colour pages on their works professional multi function printing device is expensive, as colour pages are charged for at higher price per copy compared to Black and white by the machines operator. Now for the problem: The booklet is being printed with a colour front cover and the rest is in black and white as I wanted it to be, but as far as the printer is concerned it is seeing the black text as colour so is charging for it. Ouch.
Of the few things I know of preferences I have made sure that it is not set to output all blacks as rich black which I thought would be the cure but it would not seem to be. I am at a loss to understand the other output settings or other stuff which may be telling the printer to use the colour cartridges instead of just the black. Help Please
If it is of help I made and exported a single page file in the same way with just a greyscale jpg on it and that printed just fine with the printer charging it as a black and white page as it should so the problem realy is in how the text is being seen.

OK, so where we are at the moment.
over the holiday I had the reason to re-format my computer which isn't such a bad thing as I got to reload Indesign which should have corrected any problems in the indesign preferences ( I would Hope) and set everything to its default:
On opening indesign for the first time I changed the appearance of black setting to display and output all blacks accurately.
I went in to bridge and set the suit colour settings to Europe general purpose 2 and synchronised.
As it looks now: I made a new file where I typed one word in black (Helo)
I checked the typed word with the separations preview, turning off the black and cmyk and the typed word disappeared which is a good thing as this means there is no other colour present on the page except 100%K.
I saved and exported the file to PDF as Press Quality, (the only other box ticked on the general page was the optimise for fast web view which I left alone and unchanged) I left all other pages in the export area unchanged from the defaults produces by the Press Quality preset
I sent the file off and guess what: the printer saw it as colour and charged it as colour.

Images printing too dark

Hello all...I'm using FrameMaker 7 to produce a .ps file, then creating a PDF with Acrobat Distiller v8. The newsletter we're printing has images that are darker than the jpeg's used, they're displaying fine in Frame and the PDF. This process had been working fine until I upgraded to Distiller v8. I'm trying various different settings, inc Optimise for Portability in Frame, nothing's worked so far to improve the situation. What about RGB and CYMK settings in Distiller. Using Press Quality.

It is the same AI/PDF file.

Is it the same AI/PDF file or are there two, created on either computer?
In the latter case, there may be different Color Settings/calibration/something of the kind.

IPhoto Printing Problems - please help!

I'm having continued problems trying to sort out printing from iPhoto '09. I dont have a great printer - Epson Photo r265 so it is a cheapy however it does print fine. If I print from my PC to this printer it works perfectly. Therefore I assumed there was a driver issue between the mac and the printer. Finally I worked out how to get the correct epson driver as opposed to apples version installed and set as default. Now the photos no longer have crazy lines all over them but the quality remains very poor by comparison to printing on this printer using the same photo from other sources.
I then downloaded Epsons easy photo print. If I print using this very basic package on the mac now the quality is much better (still not amazing though but certainly acceptable). So it sounds like problem solved??? ..... NO!!! The problem is that the Epson Easy Photo Print software cannot 'see' the photos in iPhoto and so to print, you first have to copy photos to desktop or some place else outside of iPhoto. This all seems due to iPhoto's wierd need to keep its arms locked around the photos within it with the result that when you look in Finder all you see is a file called "iPhoto Library" .... and 3rd party software as simple as this epson print package cannot translate this and see the photos within.
Can anyone help here and give some options?
1. Is it actually possible to print at good quality from iPhoto?
2. Is there other printing software I can use which will actually be able to see the photos in iPhoto Library
3. I even though my printer is very cheap and basic i know it is not its fault - that said are there printers better optimised to use with a mac? I would consider changing the printer if needed as I'm really sick of this.
4. Can I change the iPhoto settings somehow to stop all my photos appearing as a single file - "iPhoto Library"??

The first of these might help:
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.

*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
Other options include:
1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
