WAAS-CIFS setup for NME-WAE-522-K9

Hi,
We are developing a media solution in our lab. In that process, I was about to use a CIFS Sharing/Mouting for a DMM-DMP(Digtal media manager-digital media player). I have a cisco 3800 series router with NME-WAE-522-K9 Module , and an AXP module. I have configured the WAE with WCCP v2. It is in accelerator mode.
I want to know if i can use the same WAE device as a "CIFS share"  or should i have to use a seperate Windows/Unix machine to be acting as a server. If at all i can use the WAE module itself as Share,  Can i know any link from where i can get to know how to configure WAE device to work as share.
I came across WASF in many places of documents and wanted to check if this is what the WAE module is called when used as a Share?.
When i opened my webpage of WAE, i can see the CifsAO componenet as not licensed . So where should i download the license file from?. Does this CifsAO will be acting as a network Share.?
Sorry if it is too basic question. Am new to this WAAS setup.and moreover i am not able to find proper documentation.
Please advice.
Thanks,
JK

Hi JK,
What you are proposing is completely feasible with WAAS via the CIFS Accelerator (CIFS AO) and the prepositioning feature.  The first thing you would need to make sure is all of your WAAS devices have the Enterprise license (specifically this WAE at the branch where your clients sit and the DC WAE where the CIFS file servers sit) .  If you have not purchased this license/ it is not active on your WAAS devices please contact your Cisco SE and they can work with you on getting this feature licensed and activated.  To verify your license status on the CLI of each WAE execute the command "show license"
Once you have verified the Enterprise license is enabled, you can then enable the CIFS AO on all of your accelerators either via the CM or the CLI with the command "accelerator cifs enable"  Then you can verify it is running with the show accelerator command.
Next verify that a branch user connecting to the CIFS file server in the DC is accelerated via the CIFS AO.  From a test PC connect to the share, then on the  CLI of the branch WAE use the command "show stat con | in " and find the port 445 connection to your DC file server IP.  This should be listed a T,C,D,L (meaning full optimization with CIFS AO acceleration).
Once this is verified setup a preposition job as per the configuration guide here:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/app_ntwk_services/waas/waas/v421/configuration/guide/filesvr.html#wp1043490
You can then have this job run nightly/ weekly/ or whatever frequency is conducive to your environment.
Once the job has been completed your CIFS cache on the branch WAE will be populated with the data from the directory/ directories you specified in the preposition job.  So when users or devices connect to the DC file share to pull these videos/ files they will be pulling them from the local WAE cache instead of over the WAN (note, some communication still goes over the WAN to maintain proper consistency).
Note, your WAE-522 has approximately 40GB of storage allocated for CIFS cache.
Hope this helps answer your questions.
Cheers,
Mike Korenbaum

  • IOS Image for NME-WAE-502

The data sheet for the NME-WAE-502 indicates that a minimum IOS of 12.4(9)T or later must be used. Does the image have to be a T train image?
Also, does the image have to be a particulare feature set, ie. Advanced IP Services, etc.?
    Thanks.
    John

    John,
Yes, the NME-WAE requires a 12.4T image. Support for the NME-WAE hardware will be rolled into 12.5 mainline.
    Thanks,

  • NME-WAE-502-K9 & RME

The NME-WAE-502-K9 shows as an unknown device type in RME. The SysObjectID returns as .1.3.6.1.4.1.9.1.1210; however, the RME supported device table says it should be 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.1.823. I have confirmed the device credentials are correct. The inventory & config archive are working. What do I need to do to ensure RME recognizes the NM correctly?

    Hi Drew,
Very interesting.  I'm actually working with another customer at present who has both nme-wae-502 and nme-wae-522 devices, and both of these are returning sysObjectID 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.1.823 (ciscoNmWae) , which according to the LMS 3.2 Supported Devices documentation is correct - http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/net_mgmt/ciscoworks_lan_management_solution/3.2/device_support/table/lms32sdt.html.
In my investigation of this other problem I did come across 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.1.1210 (ciscoNmWae502) & 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.1.1211 (ciscoNmWae522) but couldn't explain why the different sysObjectID's
From my customer I see :
Cisco Wide Area Application Services Software Hardware Version: nme-wae-502-4.0.23.4
Cisco Wide Area Application Services Software Software Release 4.0.23 (build b4 Apr 20 2009)
    AND
Cisco Wide Area Application Services Software Hardware Version: nme-wae-522-4.1.3a.32
Cisco Wide Area Application Services Software Software Release 4.1.3a (build b32 Jun 18 2009)
    You are seeing :
Cisco Wide Area Application Services (WAAS-UNIVERSAL-K9) Software Release 4.2.1 (build b38 Jun 16 2010)
    Version: nme-wae-502-4.2.1.38
So what I think has happened here, is that in the later release of WAE software that you are running, the new sysObjectID's have been introduced to uniquely identify the nme-wae-502 and nme-wae-522.  Unfortunately these new sysObjectID's are not recognised by LMS/RME hence it's showing as an Unknown device type in RME.
I'll need to lodge a request to have support for these new sysObjectID's added to LMS.  Not sure how long this will take before it becomes available though.

    Hi.
I have added a new NME-WAE-502-K9 in one of our remote Cisco 2811 routers. This module doesn´t boot, and it seems to be in a loop trying to boot. I´m trying to find documentation about how to proceed with this kind of situations and this kind of network modules, but don´t find anything helpful. Please, could you give me a help?

Hi Nicolas, thanks for your response. Your suggested procedure is fine for NME-WAE. However I think our NME-WAE is crashing before to reach BOOT-PHASE3 as described in procedure, so I don´t know if i have to go ahead with sysimg images. Anyway, I have been testing with diferent sysimg versions, and I always obtain the same result: I obtain "corrupted netboot image" error

  • NME-WAE-502 for point to point ?

Can I use two NME-WAE-502 for a point-to-point WAN, one as edge and one as core ?
Is it also possible to use them without the Central-Manager ?
    Thanks !

    Hello Daniele,
    here are my comments:
Can I use two NME-WAE-502 for a point-to-point WAN, one as edge and one as core ?
There is no restriction where to install them but these are design mainly for branch offices, my suggestion is to give your best guess and estimate number of users, applications, bandwidth and take the time to check the design guides as well. Request assistance to your Cisco Partner too.
    some details about the module:
    NME-WAE-502
    Max Optimized TCP Connections: 500
    Max CIFS Sessions: 120
    Max Recommended WAN Link [Mbps]:4
further details can be found on the design guide
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/solutions/Enterprise/Data_Center/WAASDC11.html
Is it also possible to use them without the Central-Manager ?
WAAS continues to function in the event  of CM failure, but you  need it for configuration changes, monitoring, statistics, software updates...etc.
    hope that helps,
    Felix

  • Change ACNS to WAAS in NME-WAE-502-k9

    Hi,
Is it possible to migrate ACNS to WAAS in NME-WAE-502-K9? I only find this document http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/app_ntwk_services/waas/waas/v413/aow/guide/acnsvbguide.html and it is said, the image only supports WAE. If this possible, could you provide the guidance to migrate it? Thanks

    Hi,
The procedure is the same ones as to reinstall the software. It's described in the "Maintaining your WAAS system" section of the documentation.
To make it easier, here are the steps:
To reinstall the system software on an NME-WAE network module installed in a Cisco access router, follow these steps:
Step 1 Log in to the Cisco router in which the NME-WAE module is installed, and reload the NME-WAE module:
    router-2851> enable
    router-2851# service-module integrated-Service-Engine 1/0 reload
Step 2 Immediately open a session on the module:
    router-2851# service-module integrated-Service-Engine 1/0 session
Step 3 While the module is reloading, you will see the following option during boot phase 3. Enter *** as instructed:
    [BOOT-PHASE3]: enter `***' for rescue image: ***
Step 4 The  rescue image dialog appears. The following example demonstrates how to  interact with the rescue dialog (user input is denoted by entries in  bold typeface):
This is the rescue image.  The purpose of this software is to let
you install a new system image onto your system's boot flash
device.  This software has been invoked either manually
(if you entered `***' to the bootloader prompt) or has been
invoked by the bootloader if it discovered that your system image
    in flash had been corrupted.
To download an image from network, this software will request
    the following information from you:
        - which network interface to use
        - IP address and netmask for the selected interface
        - default gateway IP address
        - FTP server IP address
        - username and password on FTP server
        - path to system image on server
Please enter an interface from the following list:

  • CM on NME-WAE-502-K9 ?? Is it possible??

I do have two ISRs with this module, and would like to know if it's possible to set it up one of them as a Central Manager.

  • Docs for a WAE newbie

Can someone please point me to the docs that shed the light on how the Cisco's NM-WAE operates?
    thanks

    Here is the updated link:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/docs/app_ntwk_services/waas/waas/v403/module/configuration/guide/wsnmecfg.html
Regarding your second question, the Central Manager (CM) is required for configuration of the application optimizers within WAAS. So at a minimum, you will need two NME-WAE's and an external appliance to function as the CM.
    Thanks,
    Zach

  • Best setup for a non-Mac file server?

I have a dual xeon server, with a SATA RAID5 I want to use as a file server in a cross-platform environment.
*What I've tried and the issues...*
At first I considered using Windows 2003 (Win2k3) but Services for Macintosh (SFM) is an older version of AFP and thus only supports 31 character filenames. With all our Macs supporting SMB/Samba/CIFS and Apple touting that "Macs and PCs can co-exist harmoniously on the same network" I figured I would give that a try.
    SMB doesn't work.
Sure I can create a connection, but transferring files is a completely different story. I'm trying to backup application and system data, but companies such as Adobe and Apple have named some of their files with special characters that can't be transferred over SMB. I know NTFS doesn't support these characters, but I though a Linux box using SMB would work fine. It doesn't. It's the protocol which keeps me from transferring the data. I end up with the lovely error message of "You cannot copy some of these items to the destination because their names are too long or contain invalid characters for the destination..." (what's sad is, if you google for " because their names are too long or contain invalid characters for the destination" you only get 6 results.)
So I thought I would give NFS a try. Apple says "Viewed from Mac OS X, [connecting via NFS] is just like connecting to an Apple or Windows server." No. It's not. NFS shares don't even show up in the Finder's Network listing. There are also a pile of other hurdles which are only tackled by savvy, command-line using users.
So that leaves me with AFP. Win2k3 doesn't support filenames longer than 31 characters, and Win2k8 is dropping SFM altogether. Off to choose a *nix flavor, but that requires Netatalk. It hasn't been updated in years, it has many bad performance reviews... and most distros have removed it. I can download and install it. Oh, but that requires I get the kernel source files. Then I have to create an RPM an that's not working... now I'm several levels deep in trying to figure out how to get Netatalk working and I'm not even sure it will work.
*What's the best setup for a non-Mac file server?*
FreeNAS seems promising, but it's in alpha/beta and they have all sorts of warnings regarding potential data loss. Sure there's ExtremeZ-IP, but I really don't want to spend $675 do something Apple claims OS X can already do. I can put just about any non-Mac OS on this thing... what's the best way to set it up so it works?
    Thanks much.

Rick may be right because although i didnt think of it before i tend to have notoriuosly long classnames for my php classes and i have used samba on occasion (when rsync is out of the question for one reason or another) and never had a problem. I use kubuntu (feisty at the moment )with an ext3 filesystem. if i have a chance this evening ill give it a try and see what happens.
You could also possibly use FUSE to use an ssh filesystem for the shares... i don tknow how that would figure in your back up though.
Also if worse comes to worse you could tar or dmg the the necessary files... just some thoughts.
Ill be interested to know what you end up implementing....
OH one last thought... Compile Darwin from source and use that as your server

  • NME-WAE-502-K9 does not come up on 3925 router

    Hello,
I have a 3925 ISR G2 router equipped with the following:
    NAME: "CISCO3925-CHASSIS", DESCR: "CISCO3925-CHASSIS"
    PID: CISCO3925-CHASSIS , VID: V03 , SN: FCZ151920TA
NAME: "Cisco Services Performance Engine 100 for Cisco 3900 ISR on Slot 0", DESCR: "Cisco Services Performance Engine 100 for Cisco 3900 ISR"
    PID: C3900-SPE100/K9   , VID: V03 , SN: FOC15060R5V
NAME: "9 Port FE Switch on Slot 0 SubSlot 1", DESCR: "9 Port FE Switch"
    PID: HWIC-D-9ESW       , VID: V01 , SN: FOC1508029Y
NAME: "C3900 AC Power Supply 1", DESCR: "C3900 AC Power Supply 1"
    PID: PWR-3900-AC       , VID: V02 , SN: QCS1517P0BR
The router is also equipped with the following two modules:
    NME-WAE-502-K9
SM-NM-ADPTR which is needed to support the NME-WAE-502-K9 on 3925 ISR G2 routers.
The issue is that both of the above modules are not showing up in "show inventory", "show version" and "show diag".
The router is running the following IOS version:
    15.0(1)M5
The router has the following licenses installed:
    License Info:
    License UDI:
    Device#   PID                   SN
    *0        C3900-SPE100/K9       FOC15060R5V
Technology Package License Information for Module:'c3900'
    Technology    Technology-package          Technology-package
                  Current       Type          Next reboot
    ipbase        ipbasek9      Permanent     ipbasek9
    security      securityk9    Permanent     securityk9
    uc            None          None          None
    data          None          None          None
I also tried to install the "diagk9" license for evaluation, which did not solve the issue.
I also tried to reboot the router, also did not solve the issue.
It seems to me, per Cisco's documentation, that the router is meeting the minimum requirements.
Please advise if you know how to solve this issue.
I'm attaching "show tech-support" output from the router, and also a screenshot of the rear side of the router.
    Thanking in advance, Udi Dahan.

    Hello Ehud,
Looks like this could be hardware issue. Do you see the power on the NME module when you put it in?
    There could be two problems:
    1. The NME-WAE-502-K9 is bad. Try putting this in a different router and see if it shows up to make sure the NME module is good.
    2. The SM-NM-ADPTR is bad. Try to use different adapter with NME module and see if that shows up.
    3. The router slot itself is bad. try putting the adapter and NME module in different router to verify if it works.
If nothing above works, you may want to open up a TAC case for RMA creation.

  • What is the best 3845 IOS code level with an NMW-WAE-522?

I'll be using WCCP to redirect. I'm running 12.4(20)T right now - is that good enough for the WCCP functions?

We use 12.4(15)T5 on our 3845's with WAE-522's and don;t have any problems.

  • WAAS CIFS object caching

It is possible during a CIFS session to catch CIFS objects (files) in both WAAS across a LAN?.
One of the WAAS is located close to the server (where the files are) and the other is located across a WAN at a branch location where the files are being dragged.
The idea is that, initially, the files were moves from the client to the server and then back to other client on the same location:
    My understanding is:
When the files are move from the client to the server, the CIFS WAAS at the server location is filled and when the files are move back to another client at the same branch office the WAAS CIFS  at the branch office is filled.
    Thanks

    Zach
There are two WAAS CIFS caches: The Brand WAAS CIFS cache and the Main site (Where the servers are) WAAS CIFS cache.
I am interesting in filling the Brand WAAS CIFS cache.
Initially files are going to be transfer from client TO server. According to my knowledge, in this scenario, the WAAS CIFS cache on the server side is filled on NOT the Brand WAAS CIFS cache.
I know, for a fact, that when you transfer a file from server TO client, the Brand WAAS CIFS is filled and the Main Office WAAS is NOT.
    Thanks
Server is on Main Office and client is on Branch office.
    Alex

  • HT4557 whats the best itunes/appleID setup for family of 3 with 3 ipads, 3 iphones, one PC with all music on.  if we use 3 separate ones how do we share purchased and home content?

been with apple for years.  one itunes/appleID in use for family - all purchases and downloads on the one account..
now got 3 ipads, 3 iphones and when we update the software, we seem to get text/facetime issues due to multiple email addresses and phone numbers for the different devices that each individual uses.  For example, I send a text and it appears to have come from my wife or son to the recipient.  Not good !
there seems to be direction from apple that each of us should use our own apple id, thogh how do I link the accounts so enable family sharing of music/media we have purchased etc - Id also like to be able to review and keep a private eye on what my son downloads as he is 11 yrs old ! I manage this currently as we allow him access to the password for itunes (as we all use the same id today)
Am i better setting up accounts for my wife and son independent of my own, or not. Each of us would like access to the family content we have and the master library of synced content.  I just want the most simplistic approach that apple, or others would recommend.
Is there a better or optimum setup for a family as we cannot be alone.....

Thanks for the help, but a follow up question now.
My iPhone won't arrive for a little while, but my wife already got hers and she wants to set it up now. Using my Apple ID for the purchases, if she starts setting hers up, can she change her iCloud ID to something else quickly? It keeps telling us that we have to sign in with the AppleID first.
Should we just set up an iCloud account via normal internet before trying all this via iPhone?
