WAAS slows traffic down

Hello -
We have WAAS in a test lab and we have configured it using policy-based routing. We are running the standard test (HTTP to get a file), but when we browse to get the file, and click to download it, the transfer on a FastEthernet port starts off at 20k, then falls to nearly zero.
If we remove the PBR, the file (70 MB) tranfers very quickly. There are only two hosts on this testbed.
The WAAS is showing "compression" and such for HTTP.
Please advise! : )

It's just staged right now, so it's all in one room with FastEthernet connecting them, so the latency is probably 1 - 2 ms. We are mostly just testing policies and stuffs right now.
I was planning on putting some rate-limiting between the routers to slow traffic down to see the WAAS improvement. You think I need this now?
I just found it kinda hard to believe that even with 100 MB between the routers, that the WAAS would slow traffic down to as low a 1k sometimes.
Thanks for the help!!! : )

  • QoS and WMM settings slow internet down when enabled

    Ok, so I recently upgraded to a Linksys E3200. I am trying to get the QoS to work properly. I know that it is supposed to prioritize network traffic, so that if I have busy traffic but I am playing an online game, it should keep my gaming from stuttering while slowing other traffic down. It's a great idea in theory.
    The problem is that every time I enable QoS everything slows down dramatically. I had a 200MB download that was going to take 5hrs with QoS enabled, that took 10min with QoS disabled. And with QoS enabled I can't even watch a youtube video without it pausing to buffer every 10 seconds. And that was the only PC/device using the network at the time. Again turning off the QoS WMM option solved  the problem. I have noticed this problem with multiple routers and brands and usually just disable QoS as soon as I set up a router, however I heard that I won't get the full benefit of 300Mbps without QoS enabled. Does anyone know if that is true?
    I don't have any special Voice over IP needs, or video streaming etc. and I rarely am using multiple network devices at the same time. Is there really any reason I should enable QoS?
    Also I never really play with the settings for QoS, I just figure that since it comes enabled by default it should work for the average consumer. Does anyone know if changing the settings will help?
    Thanks for your help
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    So leave it off since it's not working for you.  FWIW I have never found it to be of any benefit.  The router works fine without it.

  • 3550 smi and xls randomly slowing network down

    Please help i have over 50 3350 xl's and smi Cisco switches, which at random time on different floor in a 20 story building slows network down. The switches are not struggling traffic or reporting errors. I have logged many calls with cisco and together we configed udld loopguard spanning treeport fast and upgrade all devices to the latest ios. but after doing tests by transferring 1 gig data from client building to hosting facilty some switches take 50% more time to tranferrer the data. The swtiches are gig stacked in pairs of 3 which connect to 2 4000 switches via fibre. Any ideas what else this could be. ? I have noticed that the gig stacks to each other are mauanlly set to half duplex. is this normal or should i false to full duplex ?

  • Too much RAM in my iMac slowing iit down?

    I've scoured the internet for an answer to this problem and found nohing. So here goes...
    Hardware
    24" iMac Intel Core 2 Duo 3.06GHz (Early 2008 - iMa8,1) 8Gb's Ram
    OS 10.6.5
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1759 Apple states that the maximum amount of RAM I can install is 4Gb (2 in each slot), that is what I had installed until yesterday.
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/stats/imac-core-2-duo-3.06-24-inch-al uminum-early-2008-penryn-specs.html"] Everymac's website states Apple officially supports 4 GB of RAM, but third-parties have been able to upgrade the system to 6 GB of RAM using one 2 GB and one 4 GB memory module.
    So I took the risk and purchased 2 sticks of 4Gb from Crucial http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/partspecs.aspx?IMODULE=CT51264AC800. In System Profiler 8Gbs is recognised and in Activity monitor, the Mac works fine for about 10 minutes with loads of apps open and has loads of free Ram and then everything starts getting sluggish, spinning beachball, non responsive mouse clicks.
    I've tested both 4Gb sticks individually and they seem to work fine on their own(that's how I've got it running now).
    Has anyone else out there tested 8Gb in this model, or has anyone an answer as to why 8Gb shows up in the system but seems to slow it down, but apparently if I put in 4 + 2Gb sticks it should work?
    Thanks

    Theoretically couldn't Apple update the firmware on the iMac to utilise the 8GBs?
    It's not a firmware issue it's hardware.

  • In large PDF files my cursor moves around the page at warp speed. It does not seem to make any difference if I slow it down with Sys Prefs. This is not only in preview but also other programs to open PDFs.

    In large PDF files the cursor moves at warp speed with a mind of it's own, I've tried slowing it down in Sys Pref with no luck. On small files cursor action is normal. This happens in Safari, Preview and other programs that use PDF files. Sorry to say this does not seem to be a new problem with 7.# I've had it with prvevious versions of operating system Right now I'm using a Apple wireless mouse and key board. Using the USB keyboard and mouse the same problem does not go away.

    Please read this whole message before doing anything.
    This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
    The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
    Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
    While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
    Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
    After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
    *Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
    The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
    Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
    Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
    Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
    The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
    Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
    After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Small changes to a web gallery slows iPhoto down to a crawl

    I am using iPhoto 7.1.1, the latest update at this time. I have a large number of web galleries published through iPhoto to .Mac. The latest is about 150 photos from Christmas. I originally published without changing the photo titles. I have been correcting that plus adding a few more photos. Any small change in a web gallery seems to be immediately published and that slows iPhoto down to a crawl. I have the fastest connection I can get from ATT's UVerse. Is there any way to turn off this immediate updating so I can make all of my changes then publish after that? I have been searching through the help files, Apple support, and the web and can't find anything. One poster on this site said his updates don't transfer until he hits the publish icon to the right of the gallery name. That's not how mine works. It automatically publishes at the slightest change. Others seem to say it is automatic for them as it is for me. It really is almost impossible to make lots of small changes to a large gallery (like adding descriptive titles) the way it is now.

    This "feature" also makes my nuts. I hate software that does these "automatic" processes, without a way for the user to alter them, or turn them off. I have been trying to change file names in one album that contains a number of images drawn from other albums that have been published to my web gallery. I do not wish the names to be changed in every album, nor in the web galleries published. But it all seems to be automatic. The name change first is applied automatically to the other albums that contain that image, and then automatically changed in every web gallery.
    I have posted these comments here: iPhoto menu -> Provide iPhoto Feedback.
    I suggest everyone that is concerned with these issues do the same. If we are lucky, Apple will soon update the software. These changes seem so easy to achieve one would think, and they would add a lot of control to the use of the program.

    When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

Is this a feature that I can turn back on? I really would like to continue to utlize that feature because it makes learning to play songs easier. Any help would be appericated.

    To import music into your iTunes library on the computer go to iTunes>Help>iTunes Help>Add items to iTunes and follow the instructions
    Delete the "songs" that do not play in your iTunes library and reimport them.

  • 2nd Display: does it slow things down?

    This could be a really stupid question, so bear with me -- does the addition of a second screen to the imac duo slow the machine down? I have noticed that Aperture isn't quite as zippy, and I suspect it's a simple lack of VRAM because of the other monitor...
    True?

    All other things being equal, and the VRAM already being higly used, it seems perfectly logical that adding a secondary display would slow things down. Extra trips to main memory to fetch things that don't fit into VRAM do take time. No idea how noticeable this performance hit would be though/how much load would be required to make it noticeable.

    from iphoto  Help
    Album overview
    A photo album in iPhoto is just like one you would create with printed photos: It’s a collection of photos you select from your library and arrange in the order you want.
    You can create photo albums to:
    Focus on a particular subject, such as your favorite nature photos
    Group pictures that you want to send to a friend, post on a webpage, or burn to a CD or DVD
    Gather a decade of anniversary photos
    iPhoto has two kinds of photo albums:
    Standard photo albums: You create these albums (B, shown below) by selecting particular photos. You can add new photos by dragging them to the album (or using the Add To button), and you can remove photos at any time. All adding and removing is done manually; iPhoto doesn’t update standard albums automatically as you import new photos.
    Smart Albums: iPhoto creates these albums for you, based on criteria your specify. iPhoto then updates Smart Albums (A, shown above) for you as your library changes. For example, you could create a Smart Album containing:
    Photos of specific people, such as your family members. As you import new photos, iPhoto uses Faces to detect your family members, and automatically adds new photos of them to the Smart Album (after you’ve confirmed the matches in Faces).
    All the photos of your daughter taken on school field trips in third grade. Use Faces (to name your daughter) and keywords (to mark certain photos or events as “field trips”) to help specify the photos you want iPhoto to place in that Smart Album.
    Only photos taken with a specific camera, or photos matching other Exchangeable Image File (EXIF) information.
    You can make as many albums as you like, and you can include the same photo in several albums without making multiple copies of it.
    After you create an album, such as “Australia Adventures,” it appears in your Source list below Albums.
    In full-screen view, the album appears as a stack of photos below Albums.
    To further organize your library, you can group several albums (along with slideshows and projects) into a folder. For example, you could create a folder containing several years of birthday albums or a collection of albums with photos of your camping trips.
    To create a folder, see “Create a folder in the Source list and move items into it” in “Customize the Source list”.
    Folders appear only in the Source list, not in full-screen view.
    Note: A photo album is different from a photo book, which is a collection of photos you create to get professionally printed and bound. See this topic: Photo book overview.

    Yes, i do not suggest upgrading right now. There is some software malfunction or glitch that spontaneously shuts down this specific model. I upgraded and it was a pain to downgrade and make my mac usable again.

  • Slow Shut Down Time For Macbook Pro Retina Snow Leapord

    Hello, I was hoping somoene could help me with the following problems.
    I have brand new Macbook Pro Retina, 15inch, 16G RAM, 500G of SSD, running Mountain Lion, and lots of professional recording software. My macbook frequently shuts down after 30 seconds, that wonderful grey wheel spinning in the center of the screen as if it were an old PC.
    I've contacted apple frequently. They check to see that I've repaired disk permission, they reset...the RAM i believe, they ask if i shut down all the programs. Even through doing all of this, usually my macbook takes 30 seconds to shut down. Sometimes it takes only 5, which is how it usually should be. ANd this occurence seems to be inconsistent with the apps I use. Sometimes it takes long to shutdown when i've barely used a thing. Other times it shuts down immediately when i've used a lot of different programs at once. So there's no constant.
    The apple boys suggest reformatting the computer to make sure it isn't a hardware issue. I refuse to accept that after only 3 months of use I already have to reformat everything. It's not the most enjoyable experience because I'd have to reinstal all my audio software despite Time Machine's magic tricks. Any suggestions?
    Here is a link I've found on the matter: http://thecustomizewindows.com/2013/02/fix-mountain-lion-slow-shut-down-time/

    These terminal commands decrease the excecution time of a process that has caused slow shutdown times for many users. This resolved my slow shutdowns. IF you are comfortable using terminal you can give them a shot, but be VERY careful using terminal.
    These terminal commands should also fix the problem then and kill the services after 2 seconds:
    Code:
    sudo launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.coreservices.appleevents.plist  sudo defaults write /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.coreservices.appleevents ExitTimeOut -int 2  sudo launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.coreservices.appleevents.plist

  • How to slow things down to see the progress bar?

    how to slow things down to let the progress bar to show its progress?
    everytime i run the program i can see only two scenario: 1. 0% 2. 100%
    i think the stuffs are too little to make any difference.
    what should i add in the codes so that i can see the progress?
    thanks!
    here is my codes:
    jProgressBar1.setValue(1);
    do some stuff here
    jProgressBar1.setValue(15);
    do some stuff
    jProgressBar1.setValue(31);
    do some stuff
    jProgressBar1.setValue(41);
    do some stuff
    jProgressBar1.setValue(61);
    do some stuff
    jProgressBar1.setValue(100);

    Hi!
    When you call update on the progress bar, the value of the progress bar is updated, but it won't be reflected on the screen until Swing has a chance to repaint. Swing can't repaint until your code is finished. So, what's happening is something like this:
    setValue(1), do stuff, setValue(15), do stuff, setValue(31), do stuff, Swing Repaint
    Also, not only does this block the progress bar from updating, but as long as your code here is running it blocks all of Swing (repainting, handling events, etc...).
    If your "stuff" isn't very time consuming, just remove the progress bar altogether. Otherwise, to make things work properly, you'll want to move it to another thread. Then, from that thread you can keep the progress bar up to date with:
    SwingUtilities.invokeLater(new Runnable() {
        public void run() {
            jProgressBar1.setValue(xxx);
    });Hope that helps!
