WAAS & VMWare VDI

We are evaluating using WAAS along with VMWare VDI to accelerate the virtual dekstop to our branches. Has anyone utilized or tested WAAS with this environment. A VMWare VDI session is basically Microsoft's RDP. Does the "canned" RDP profile in WAAS sufficient ?

When implementing WAAS with VDI disabling the RDP compression/encryption on the client is very important and the way to do it is depended on the client operating system.

WAAS not working with VMWare VDI

I have a strange problem trying to get VMWare VDI working with WAAS. The central site has a 6500 using WCCP to a core WAE. The remote site is connected via VPN and has an in-line WAE. The firewalls are running Inspect WAAS and all traffic is being optimised without problems.
You can see standard RDP traffic and HTTP traffic being optimised and CIFS is flying.
The VDI systems are using small WYSE terminals which have a two stage logon process. The first stage uses a secure HTTP connection to the VDI Broker (on IP address (x.x.152.10) to authenticate, which is does OK and the connection is displayed on the remote WAE (sh stats conn). The VDI broker then launches a VM using IP address x.x.152.65, which is obviously on the same subnet. BUT, the remote terminal cannot access the x.x.152.65 device from that site. You can access the VM x.x.152.65 from any other location in the network. Indeed, nobody from that site can access that VM. Whether they use a PC to RDP or use the VMWare client on the WYSE terminal.
If you remove the WAAS from the equation it works fine.
What's the difference? The VDI broker is on a different ESX server but they are on the same IP subnet. There is an IDS/IPS system in the core of the network that monitors traffic but i cannot see why this would matter.
The Cat 6500 is running 12.2.SXF5.

Update - It does appear to be linked with the IDS/IPS system. we got the go ahead to temporarily disable the IPS and it started working immediately.
It does not explain why other hosts worked perfectly from the remote site and even on the same subnet. I will look into this in more detail this and update this post if I get anywhere.
If anyone has anything to add to this I would appreciate the feedback.

Flash builder 4.7 consuming lot of memory in VMware VDI environment. When we debugg the application then it is throwing out of memory exception. We need to close and relaunch Flash builder IDE numerous times. Can you please help us with setting changes we need to make for flash builder or VMware VDI environment so that we can resolve this issue?

So I checked your link and all seems correct on my computer.
At the bottom of the link you provided there is "see also" section, about activation / deactivation.
I did not deactivated my licenses before my window re-install, and if now I go to Flash Builder -> Help , desactivation button is greyed out. Could it be the source of my problem that I used my licenses on two computer and did not deactivated them ?
If yes, how could I deactivate thoses products ? I searched on my profile but I can't find a way to do it.

Vista and VDA/Vmware VDI - gets stuck in the factory

Hi
I've created a VDA/VMware /vdi demo and have everything working fine with XP.
However with Vista the vm's get stuck in the factory.
I've created a custom specification in VMWare for Vista.
I have disable RDP and written the SetupComplete script to enable it again once sysprep
is finished, however it still gets stuck.
I suspect it is windows firewall stopping as this gets turned on by default - even though my template system has it turned off.
Any ideas please?

SCCM 2012 Agent in a VMwar VDI pool

We have a VMware pool of 40 virtual PCs that are regularly re-composed from a base image. Is there any definitive documentation on how to implement SCCM 2012 on VDI pools such as this. I have found a couple of things relating to SCCM 2007 (below),
are these still relevant to 2012?

For 2012 (post SP1), there is also a client setting that enables randomization of most client activity; this should be enabled on your VDI systems.
Is there any actual value to installing the ConfigMgr client agent in your non-persistent VDI systems though?

There isn't really any value in having the agent on the non-peristent machines, no, but I need the agent on my master image so I can deploy software updates to it once a month. Then we recompose all the other virtual PCs from the master with with the new software
updates applied. I will therefore only target the master image with software updates and not the other virtual PCs.
I do plan to deploy EP signatures to ALL virtual PCs though.

Trouble with Office 2013 and KMS activation.

I have a KMS server running on Server 2008 R2 that was serving out activations for Windows 7 and Office 2010. I ran the Office 2013 activation
pack on the KMS server and now it also shows our KMS key for Office 15. I realize that I need a minimum of 5 in the count field in order for activations to happen.
We use VMware VDI and I spun up a pool of 10 with Office 2013 installed on the master. Before creating the desktop clones, I rearmed the master and then shut it down, snapped it and created the desktop clones. I have logged onto most of the clones
with a number of different user IDs and when I look at the KMS server it now shows that the count is 9 - so I would assume that my copies are being activated. However, when I look at Office on the VDI clones or on my own personal computer that has 2013
installed I see that the product still needs to be activated.
Yes we have the VL service record in DNS pointing to the right server - it's been there for ages taking care of Windows and Office 2010. I did not have this issue with either of the other products and KMS. I am at a loss as to what
to do next.

check the client-side event logs for the SPP events (request/response), is the client (your pc for example), hitting the expected KMShost, and what response resulted?
Also check the KMShost event logs, is the request from your pc arriving there, and what came in, and went back as a response?

Conversation Translator does not show up after installation

Hi,
I installed the Conversation Translator for Lync 2010 from conversationtranslator.com. The installation was successful but the add-on does not show up. I used it before on a different network and it was working fine. I don't know what to check to figure
out why its not working this time. Note: I am connecting to our network through VMware (VDI). The colleague of mine who is connecting directly managed to install and is able to use.

I activated the BSP page and re-tested but it does not work.
When I activate in SE80, I get the message 'Active object generated'.
When I run it through portal or web-browser ... it does not show any message but the status bar of the browser keeps moving .... forever, indicating its doing something.
There are other 2 BSP pages which are working fine, but this BSP page ( which is the most important) is giving this porblem.

Protecting Certificates with a PIN or passcode

There is a way to lock the entire device with the use of a passcode but in some scenarios that is not applicable. Typically when there is a "private" device used for some specific applications like Citrix or VMWare VDI via a VPN connection.
In this use case there is a wish to use certificate based authetication with or without VPN-on-demand.
Now to my question. As I dont wish to set a device passcode, is there a way to prompt the user for a PIN/Passcode when accessing the Certificate private key?
i.e when the VPN is to be connected the user would have to enter this PIN/Passcode in order to use the Certifacte.

It seems that I wasn't completely clear. I do see that I can store the login id and password. However, that seems unsafe in the event that my phone is lost of stolen.
If I don't store the password, is there a sneaky way to store it somewhere where I can quickly copy and paste it but where it would not be obvious to others? I thought about storing it as a predictive text word so that I could enter it more quickly. Thoughts?
I see configuration menus for a PIN2 as well as security modules. However, there is no explanation as to what these do except to say that it may be used to protect access to certain phone features. The manual is vague.

App-V packages not streaming on VMWare View VDI

We are currently running SCCM 2012 R2 CU2 on VMware View VDI's.
We maintain our golden image using SCCM OSD.
NExt to applications installed in the image, we are also using app-v packages.
Before we can deploy the image, it needs to be stripped (or sysprepped) so as to garantuee that the clones will not report to the Management Point using the same SCCM Guids etc.
There for we perform the following:

When we deploy the new version of an image, we see that APP-V packages are not being streamed immediately to the clients.
While troubleshooting, I noticed that whenever I login and run a Machine Policy Evaluation & Retrieval cycle, that a ccmrepair and ccmrestart is being executed.
After the restart, the client immediately starts streaming the App-V packages.
Can anyone help me in pinpointing where the ccmrestart gets triggered from?
I've searched to already a lot of logs (ccmexec, execmgr, policyagent, policyevaluator,..) for the root cause but am unable to find it.

I just ran the action "Machine Policy Evaluation & Retrieval cycle" on my client, the Ccmrepair and Ccmrestart were not being executed from the logs.
You could trigger the CcmRestart by running "%windir%\CCM\CcmRestart.exe".

How to use Sunray without VDI or VMware View Manager

There is no VDI or VMware View Manager in my test environment. Only srss 4.2 and srwc 2.2 has been installed.
Now i have 5 sunray client and 5 Windows XP VM. How can I let every user use their Windows XP VM in this environment and can enable USB redirection?

I think the problem you are running into is that you are using uttsc inside a Solaris environment as an app, looks like CDE, which isn't being supported to my knowledge to avoid conflicts between the two desktops. It is designed to work out of the box with SRWC kiosk mode.
The undocumented way to turn it on is to turn usb on by adding -r USB:on as an argument.

ZCM 11.2.4 in a VMWare View VDI environment

We have been running 11.2.4 in our View VDI environment and overall been very successful. We just rolled Win 7 and are seeing approx. 10% of the VMs with the zenworkswindowsservice.exe running steadily around 50% for hours. Any thoughts? One thing I just set to try was excluding that from Microsoft FEP AV. Anything other thoughts to resolve? Thanks.

There are no known issues regarding VMWare view that would cause this.

I find ProcMon for Sysinternals useful to see if other prcesses such as
AV are hitting those files unexpectedly. A few times I have seen AV
Exclusions not quite working as expected until tweaked.
The ZMD-Messages.log may show if the agent is doing something....

Streaming App-V App to VMware Linked Clone VDI Pool via SCCM 2012 SP1

I have a few different App-V 5.0 applications that will work when deployed to a regular Windows 7 PC but when deployed to a VMware Linked Clone VDI I get a failure.
The primary error message appears to be: Windows Error: 0x11A - The mounted file system does not support extended attributes
Any suggestions are appreciated.

I would assume that the file-system you are attempting to place the app is not supported. The above articles could give you a hint on what to verify why that is the case.

Cisco WAAS-Global policy for VMware Vsphere and/or 3par replication

So, this is somewhat annoying that VMware Site Recovery Manager 5.0 does not seem to get much replication acceleration, mostly it is just Pass Through. I have read a couple of Cisco marketing powerpoints that say WAAS will accelerate VMware. But there are no Policies to that effect or configuration assistance. So, vmware has a hundred or so connections in passthrough, all using port 44046, this web site here:

Shows that this is the port used for Ongoing replication, and port 31031 is used for the initial replication. So, I have two 674-8gb with inline cards. One in main office, one at DR office, both running 5.0.1. The Lan ports on each side point to the LAN and the WAN interfaces on each end point to each other. I have a layer 2 - 90Mbps link between the two locations, so "show cdp neighbor" shows the WAN interface connected.
My question is, is there a policy I should create for this data to be accelerated and stop being "PT Asymmetric"?
Second question, very similar to the first, 3par replication. Same as above, but 3par uses port 5785 and the traffic shows up as "PT In Progress", there are only 6 or so connections in this state, but all are on this port 5785.
If I pull up the pretty graphs on the CM for this device, it shows a well distributed graph, but if I click the check box for "include Pass-Through" it turns all blue and says 100% of traffic is "other-traffic" Since 99% of what goes between these two WAAS devices is VMware site recovery manager 5.0 and 3par replication, I would really like to find a fix for this.

I created 2 - Optimization Policy Rules for "WAAS-GLOBAL"
par3-rcopy, destination ports - 5785, 3491-3492, Application - Replication, TFO with DRE Adaptive and LZ
VMware-Replication, destination ports - 44046, 31031, Application - Replication, TFO with DRE Adaptive and LZ
Then I rebooted both WAAS devices and shut off the link for 20 minutes. When I brought the link back online. 100% of data was accelerated, and 99% of the data was classified as "Replication" data. I now get between 60% and 90% acceleration on this "Replication" traffic. The final 1% is other data, remote desktop, ssl, citrix, sql, web...
Lessons learned: The 3par and VMware keep TCP connections open forever, and once the traffic in that session is classified as something, "other traffic" or "Pass Through" it does not change until you reset the connection. So, if you make any changes, you have to shutdown the link, and clear all TCP connections from the WAAS devices, then it will go to a different optimization rule.
Final thoughts: I am not completely sure that the Optimization policy rule "TFO with DRE Adaptive and LZ" is the BEST possible rule to use for this traffic. If anyone has a better configuration for this traffic, I would really appreciate your input.

Cisco ISE & NAC Agent in a Vmware View VDI Environment

Anyone deployed Cisco ISE NAC agent on a vmware view virtual desktop environment (VDI)?

There are no known issues regarding VMWare view that would cause this.

I find ProcMon for Sysinternals useful to see if other prcesses such as
AV are hitting those files unexpectedly. A few times I have seen AV
Exclusions not quite working as expected until tweaked.
The ZMD-Messages.log may show if the agent is doing something....
