WAAS / WAFS and hidden shares

It may be a strange question but can I preposition hidden shares on a WAAS device? I have tried manually entering in the share name in the "root share and directories" part of a preposition directive in the format /sharename$/
It seems that the preposition copies the files into the WAE's CIFS cache, but once I do that I can't access the files in the hidden share anymore.
My other question is once I preposition some files to my WAE is there a way that I can selectively delete items from the CIFS cache (I am thinking of deleting the files in that particular share if possible as a troubleshooting step).
Regards,
Peter

Zach,
The files in the hidden share that we pre-positioned were for SMS packages. Once we pre-positioned them we were no longer able to deploy those packages to clients. I am a little suspicious that the real issue is with SMS - not the files themselves.
On the subject of deleting specific files in the CIFS object cache - is there any way to actually SEE the files that are in the cache, rather than deleting them?
Thanks for your help.
Peter

  • WAAS Prepositioning and File Share Access

We have WAAS solution in place with HQ based in UK and remote offices globally. One of our sites in Singapore is experiencing slow performance when opening files. From the WCM I can the cache was set to just 5% and I have increased that now to 25% based on some other threads.
How can one verify which files are being cached locally on the WAE, this is my qtn?
any other fine tuning advice would be appreciated. I accept our WAE's could do with a code upgrade.

  • Hidden shares for specific users

    Hi,
I've been computer admin for years but please forgive my ignorance because I'm new to Mac Server. I am using 10.5.6 server on a PPC dual G5. All clients are 10.5.6.
I am trying to setup hidden network folders that only specific users can access.
On a local slave drive I have created share points within ServerAdmin. One of these is a folder called "NetUserStorage" and within this folder I have a folder called TestUserFolder. I did NOT set up NetUserStorage as a sharepoint. I did set up a TestUserFolder as a sharepoint via only SMB (guest access off) and made the TestUser (which i created in WGM) have Full Control, localadmin has RW, Others has none.
FYI, the server doesn't do DNS, DHCP, or anything, it's just a file server.
The client is only bound to server via the application "Directory", and I log into the client as a local user. When I connect to server and enter the correct path (smb://IP.x.x.x/Volumes/HD/NetUserStorage/TestUserFolder/) with the correct TestUser and password, I get an error message that says "You do not have permission to access this server." Yet I can connect to the server as guest and access all the public shares fine.
Could anyone offer some advice? I'm reading and learning as quickly as possible and have already done some great stuff but I can't seem to do this simple task.
    Thanks.

Steve thank you for helping me. You've helped me answer this question but I now have another (of course right?).
I finally got it to work by typing just the IP of MyMacServer and then choosing the share. Previously, I was typing the whole path to the hidden share I was trying to mount (smb://IP.ip.ip.ip/Volumes/HD/HiddenFOlder/TestUserStorage/). Now, when I simply type smb://IP and hit enter, authenticate as TestUser, I am presented with shares to choose from including the hidden folder I have been trying to mount. I can also confirm when connecting as a different user that the hidden TestUserStorage folder is not an option to mount, and is not even listed - which of course is what I want.
So now I have a question about logging into the client computer using network accounts.
On the client computer, I had been logging into a local account, LocalUser. I bound the client computer to the server using "Directory Utility" and the TestUser account (TestUser is a network account found in OD on MyMacServer). I have software update looking to the MyMacServer and pulling updates from it, and at the logon screen on the client computer, I can select the "other" account and login as MyNetAdminUser (a user located in OD as TestUser is), but when trying to logon as TestUser I am not able to.
Thank you for all your help so far, hate to be such a noob, but got any ideas on why I can't login to the local client using the TestUser account?
    Thanks again.

  • WAAS - WAFS not working

    Hi
I have a problem regarding the WAFS optimization.
I installed 2 new WAE's with version 4.1.1a and Enterprise License
In the policies definition, the WAFS/CIFS policy is enabled and present in the core and branch policies.
and in the Graphs and charts, the WAFS is being present in the TOP 10 applications...
But when i tried to do a test by accessing a PC in the other branch by using \\(ip of the Pc), the test did work when copying the file twice.
When i did the Diagnostics Tests on both WAEs (branch and HO), i get in both cases the following:
    WAFS configuration and operation NONE
NONE - Skipping test because Wafs is not enabled
From previous experience, i know that the WAFS is enabled by default on the 4.1 version.
    Can anyone help please?
    Best regards,

    Hi,
In 4.1.x releases you don't need to configure the Core / Edge for CIFS anymore (unless you have WAEs running older version and hence want to keep that legacy config). Since you mentioned that you installed two new WAEs and doing the tests between them you really don't the core/edge config.
If you have a Central Manager then after login go to
'Manage Devices->choose the WAE(1)' and then on the left drawer / pane click 'Accleration->Enabled Features'
After clicking 'enabled features' the page will load with enabled features for this particular device (on the right side of the screen). Ensure ' CIFS Accelerator' is checked.
Repeat this exercise for the second WAE as well.
Another way to find out is, telnet or console into the WAEs and then run 'show accelerator'. You want to ensure
CIFS is licensed, config state is 'Enabled' and Operational Status is 'Running' on both WAEs.
With 4.1.x by default CIFS AO (application optimization) is enabled by default. So, all you need is license. Since you have enabled the license it should work.
    Good luck!

  • Manually add hidden Shares to Microsoft UAG File Access - You do not have permission

Have made little progress adding hidden shares for Home Folder access, followed steps listed here
    http://itcalls.blogspot.ca/2012/10/manual-add-of-shares-to-microsoft-uag.html
Manually entered the server and share name into "ShareAccessCfg.xml", activated the configuration once the shares showed up in file access console.
However, our users still cannot access their Home Folder.
    Error displayed internally:
    Message displayed externally:

We finally figured out what might be the cause, seems our hidden file shares are hosted on Windows Server 2012 R2 which uses SMB 3.02 dialect, looking into the server manager a little deeper we noticed that the shares had SMB encryption enabled which is
not supported on server 2008 R2 / UAG...

    Hi apples-consecutive-buyer-for-life,
Family Sharing makes all of your past purchases available to other family group members, including most apps. See this article on what content can be shared -

Note also that content can be hidden. See this article -

  • Hidden shares/mount points

Apologies for double-posting this, but I just realized this forum is more suited for this question.
I'm having a very strange problem in Lion running on a Mac Mini. I'm using Automount Maker to mount 8 different network shares at login and 2 of them are exhibiting weird behavior. All the shares except those 2 show up in the Finder. When I look in /Volumes using the Finder, the 2 mount points are not visible, but if I use Terminal to ls /Volumes, the mount points are visible in the list in Terminal. I can cd to those mount points and navigate the files, so the shares are definitely mounted, just invisible to the Finder. As a result, some scripts that run on the computer that reference /Volumes/sharename are failing.
I've tried changing the visibility of these mount points with "chflags hidden" but that didn't fix it.
I tested mounting the share without using Automount Maker (just the normal Apple+K method) and the share still mounts invisible. This time however, when the Finder pops open to show me the share after mounting it, the icon for the share in the Finder is dimmed. I've never seen this behavior before.

You dont need timbuktu to control OSX server screen sharing is now built in.
The most secure way to do what you want it to use ssh tunneling. You dont need vpn. with ssh you could run screen sharing and apple filesharing through the ssh tunnel.
By default remote login is enabled in osx server. Being a server if configured correctly it will have a static ip address.
So configure your office networks router to forward tcp port 22 from the internet to the ip address of your server.
Then you need an account on the server, maybe you are already the admin account.
open your terminal the following commands will setup a tunnel for file sharing and screen sharing.
    screen sharing tunnel
    ssh user@server -L 5901:localhost:5900
replace server with the actual public IP address of your office internet connection. replace user with the actual account name on the server.
Once logged in open the screen sharing app and use a host name of localhost:5901
    for file sharing use
    ssh user@server -L 5548:localhost:548
    once logged in
press command +K and in the server address use localhost:5548
    that is it.

  • My wife and I share the iPad. Can we set up separate accounts to log in (like on our Mac)?

My wife and I share the iPad. Can we set up separate accounts to log in (like on our Mac)?

Good question, but I'm 99.9% certain the answer is "no".  Here are some considerations:
Think of the heritage of iOS.  It really started with iPhones and maybe iPods.  These devices cost a whole lot less than a Mac.  They are generally not thought of as shared (with exceptions, of course, as is true for you).
Think of the backup process.  i-devices typically sync with one iTunes on one computer.  How would an i-device with multiple users enstantiate this?
Anyway, all this is to say I'm convinced you cannot do what you're inquiring about.

My wife and I share the same iTunes account. How do I setup a separate account for her? Can I do it using my iMac?

Using More than One iDevice on the Same Computer
This applies mainly to couples who are adding another device and do not want their email, messages, etc. being duplicated on both devices. To begin read: How to use multiple iPhone, iPad, or iPod devices with one computer. You need to establish a separate Apple ID and password for whomever will use the new iDevice. See Apple - My Apple ID and Frequently asked questions about Apple ID. The easiest way is to do this on the computer using iTunes: iTunes- How to set up an Apple ID within iTunes.
On the computer create a new user account for the person with the new iDevice. This will be the user account that person will always use. He/She will no longer use the other user account. This way that person will have a separate iTunes Library
Start by transferring the new device(s) to a new account along with all your data.  Save any photo stream photos that you want to keep to your camera roll (unless they are already in the camera roll) by opening your Photos app, tap on Albums icon at the bottom. Now, tap on My Photo Stream album; tap Select; tap on the photos you want to select;, tap the share icon (box with upward facing arrow) in the lower left corner; then tap Save to Camera Roll.
If you are syncing notes with iCloud that you want to keep then you need to open each of your notes and email them to yourself. Later you can copy and paste the text into new notes created in your new account.
Tap on Settings > iCloud > Delete Account (only deletes it from this device, not from iCloud; the person keeping the current account will not be affected,) provide the password to turn off Find My Phone and choose Keep on My iDevice when prompted.  Sign in with a different Apple ID to create your new account. Choose Merge to upload your data.
Once you are on separate accounts, you can each go to icloud.com and delete the other person's data from your account.
Note: The essence of the above was created by user, randers4. I
have made substantial changes to improve readability and syntax.

  • Problem with wpa and hidden ssid

    hi,
I have a powerbook g4 (1,67ghz). i am having trouble connecting to a netgear router mr814 v3 if i use wpa and hidden ssid, i get a message, that the router would not support wpa!
there is no problem with wep and hidden ssid or wpa with no hidden ssid.
is also have no problems with wpa and hidden ssid with an ibook.
the problems occur only with the powerbook with os x 10.3.9 as well as 10.4.2. even after the recent airport update, no change.
    thanks for the help,
    ben

I would use WPA and broadcast your SSID.
It use to be useful, but closing your Airport or wireless network (sometimes referred to as not broadcasting your SSID) is really no longer a real option when it comes to wireless security.
Unfortunately "Closed" networks, MAC access control lists, and reduction in transmission power are all more "feel good" security rather than real security. All these various approaches are dated and mistakenly lead to overconfidence.
WPA is your friend if you value wireless security.
My recommendation is not to worry about broadcasting your SSID but use WPA. This will be more secure than a closed WEP encrypted network. Closing your network makes it very difficult for neighbouring networks to see which channels are free thus causing potential interference problems.
Another thing to consider is that a closed network is still broadcasting and therefore is detectable (regardless of whether it is broadcasting a SSID). If someone was determined to hack into your network, then not broadcasting your SSID and MAC address access control is not going to stop them.
WPA is virtually uncrackable (only really vunerable to a dictionary attack if a real word is used as a password) and therefore will stop the casual user and the determined hacker.

  • How do I get separate iCloud accounts for each family members device and still share iTunes?

how do I get separate iCloud's for each family members iPhone, iPod and iPad and still share iTunes?

Have everyone share the same iTunes store ID, but use separate IDs for iCloud.  The ID you use for iCloud does not have to be the same as the ID you use for the iTunes & App store.

  • HT4436 we have 5 devices on one itunes account how do I give them each their own icloud account and still share the itunes account?

we have 5 devices on one itunes account how do I give them each their own icloud account and still share the itunes account?

You need a unique AppleID for each iCloud account.  So grab some free gmail, hotmail, aol, yahoo or whatever email addresses to make five new AppleIDs.  Now, everybody make an iCloud account for themselves, and keep the existing shared AppleID and password just for use in the iTunes and App Stores.  You can also each use your own unique AppleIDs to make iMessage accounts and keep those separate as well.

There should be no issues. Its designed to work like that.  You don't change Apple IDs just because you get a new device.

Is there any chance that the phones can fall out of sync?
Unlikely. But nothing is impossible.   Though I don;t see how that would happen. As long as both are signed into the Same Apple ID / iCloud Account they will be N'Sync. (Bad Joke)

If I get a message or buy an app or take a photo on the iPhone 5, how do I get those things onto the iPhone 6?
If you buy an App, you have 2 ways to get it to the iPhone6: If Automatic Downloads is enabled in Settings->iTunes & App Store, it will automatically download to the iPhone 6 when you buy it on the 5 and vice versa if you buy it on the 6, it will download to the 5.
Alternatively, you can simply go to the App Store App->Updates->Purchased and look for the App there and download it. Purchased Apps will not require payment again. i.e They'll be free to download to the iPhone 6 once purchased.
SMS Messages will sync over using Continuity as long as they are on the same Wifi network. Otherwise, restoring the iPhone 5 backup to the iPhone 6 will transfer all messages received up until the backup was made onto the iPhone 6.
Images, can be transferred either through Photo Stream

Or any Cloud service you want such as Dropbox, or One Drive.

Also, something i forgot to ask initially: Should I update the iPhone 5 to iOS 8 first or does that not matter?
If you want the Continuity features as explained above you need to update the iPhone 5 to iOS 8. Otherwise its not all that important.
