WAE 7341 conversion

Does anyone know if it's possible to convert a WAE 7341 into a generic server to run any type of OS on it?

Hi Brad,
You cannot use this HW box to install any other OS other than Cisco WAAS, we have the Bios customized and it won't allow any other OS to be loaded on it.

    Hi,
For the first time I am deploting WAE deviece in DC center. Since this is a new technology for me. Can some bosy help me  in doing physical connectivity. I am getting confused in WAN in /out interface. Apart from this I want to know how to do basisc level configuration .Can you please help me out in this regards?I
my setup is like one core rtr,one core switch and onr layer2 switch in betwwen core rtr & core switch.

Your account team could be the first place you turn, as they can get someone onsite if needed to provide in-person assistance.  We also have an internal helpdesk to help Partners with new deployments and trial deployments.  And there is Cisco TAC should you encounter problems during the deployment.  All of these resources are staffed with people trained and experienced in WAAS.
WAAS provides multiple methods of deployment and interception, including (but not limited to) WCCP and Inline.  Inline places the WAE in the path of the packets. WCCP places the WAE out of path of the packets and requires that the router/switch be configured to intercept packets and redirect them to the WAE.
If the WAE comes equipped with inline card, an inline group consists of a pair of interfaces marked LAN and WAN.  Connect LAN to the cable connecting to the LAN-side switch/router, and connect WAN to the cable connecting to the WAN-side switch/router.  The types of cabling you use, duplex and speed settings on the switches and routers, and placement of the WAE within the network are important.
However, Inline may not be the preferred method for deploying in your datacenter.
If the WAE does not come equipped with an inline card, then the Gigabit interfaces are used to connect to a router/switch, and packets must be redirected to that WAE on that interface.  A single interface may be used, or the interfaces may be grouped into a port-channel or standby interface configuration.  Redirection from the router/switch is generally accomplished by configuring WCCP on the router/switch and on the WAE.  Packets are intercepted at the router on one or more interfaces, and redirected to the WAE.  The WAE processes them, performing appropriate optimizations, and egresses them back to the router/switch which forwards them to the destination.
Decide on the interception method.  Read the appropriate sections in the documentation and decide how best to connect the WAE and configure interception, based on your datacenter's unique requirements.  Probably the fastest way to get started would be to read the quick-start guide, and use the CLI-based setup tool.

    Hello,
I was able to switch code products using the recovery CD-ROM.
    Some things I learned.
It took about an hour then I had to reconfigure them and add them back to CM; so about 90 minutes for each device.  While you can back up the config and reinstall, I didn't bother as my devices weren't in production yet and only had some basic IP configuratuion.
I had two critical alarms after the code install.  One was for a missing license and one was for a RAID issue.  I was able to correct the license issue from CM.
Select the device then Admin\License Management and tick the ‘Transport’ (or whichever type your using) box then click the submit button.
The RAID alarm I didn’t fix myself.  Depending on the device model, the process of using the recovery CD-ROM involves rebuilding the RAID array.  The install process continues while the RAID array rebuilds in the back ground, at least that’s how I think it works as the documentation wasn't clear on that point.  When I left for the day the RAID alarm was still showing on the CM.  The next day there weren’t any alarms.  I was able to find a mention is some other documentation the the RAID rebuild process can take several hours.
    Thanks again for your help.

    Hi,
This sounds like an issue with your FTP server timing out the connection.  You may want to increase the timeout value on the FTP server, or you can enable FTP services on the WAE itself and upload to it.
On the CLI of the 7341 enter the config command inetd enable ftp.
Then from your PC command prompt FTP into the WAE with the admin account and put the file.
    Example:
    C:\>ftp 14.110.3.19
    Connected to 14.110.3.19.
220-Welcome to the PDI WAAS Network.  Please DO NOT make any permanent

  • TCP resets with WAAS 7341?

We're running v4.4.1 on both remote and data center WAE 7341s and we're seeing TCP resets during some of our HTTP connections.
I'm just now beginning to look into the problem and noticed this the reset counters in 'show statistics tcp' such as:
    IKA-7341-K9#sh statistics tcp
    TCP statistics
    Server connection openings                         = 2323
    Client connection openings                         = 1850
    Failed connection attempts                         = 111
    Connections established                            = 68
    Connections resets received                        = 57
    Connection resets sent                             = 119
    Segments received                                  = 365727
    Segments sent                                      = 362292
    Bad segments received                              = 0
    Segments retransmitted                             = 642
I just rebooted the device an hour before doing the show command, and at this time there are only 12 connections being optimized.
Are these reset statistics of concern?

    Hi Jeff,
TCP RST Packets is a counter of all TCP RST Packets over a period of time. This variable counts the number of RST responses to monitor resets in TCP/IP.
RST packets are a sign that the TCP connections are half open. One station or the other stopped sending information or ACKs for some reason. There are acceptable times for RST packets, however, if there are a large number of RST packets in a conversation, this is definitely something to troubleshoot.
This is not a WAAS problem but WAAS is showing up something that is going on in the network. These are some statistics that WAAS collects over the period from the network traffic.
    Hope this helps.

  • What is the maximum throughput for a 7341 and 7371?

I found the data sheet that describes the size of the two boxes, and lots of other statistics, but no throughput stats. Is the main difference between the 7341 and 7371 the memory and hard drive cache size?
Our data center headend WAE will be L2 connected to a redundant pair of 6506 distribution switches with gig uplinks.
I need to make sure I get the right device that can handle gig throughput of redirected accelerated traffic . Will the 7371 handle that?

  • Should Data Center WAE point to GLBP IP address?

I will be connecting a Data Center WAE-7341 to a distribution layer made up of two 6509s. The 6509s currently have a /30 L3 connection between the two of them on routed ports. I plan on changing that to a /29 SVI connection (changing the ports to switchports) and connecting the 7341 to one of the 6509s' ports configed in the same vlan. (Eventually I'll connect a second, redundant 7341 to the other 6509, same vlan, for redundancy.)
Should I make the connection between the two 6509s a GLBP config, and have the 7341's gateway the virtual IP - but still config WCCP router-list to point to the real IP address? Or should I keep GLBP out of the picture by not configuring it, and pointing the 7341's gateway to the IP address on the 6509 it is connected to - the same as the router-list IP?

    Registration
Do NOT use a virtual gateway address (HSRP, VRRP, GLBP)
If you dont specify an IP in the router list is will use the default gateway by default.
If you do use the VIP as the default route, you may see a negative influence when the edge fails over. The DRE cache will be lost as the connection gets reset and initiated on the 2nd WAE. unless your connected to both A and B side routers from Each WAE.

  • WAAS 7341 used for Caching servers in the Data Center?

I have A substantial start on a global WAAS delployemnt with 60+
sites and counting. We are looking at leveraging the WAE-7341's running WAAS 4.1.5x
to perform an internet cacheing solution in out Internet gateway locations globally.
Typically, WAAS works in pairs. So My question is is for a NON-WAAS site, can the WAE perform as a Caheing server for site that dont have WAAS?
ACNS software coudl run in the same hardware but My understanding is this software is being phased out in leiu of WAAS.
Any thoughts or comments on this?

    Hi Todd,
WAAS requires a peer in order to optimize traffic.  As you mentioned, ACNS is a viable one-sided solution for Internet proxy caching.  I haven't heard anything about ACNS being discontinued.  In fact, you can even run ACNS as a virtual blade on WAAS.

  • DC WAE Design help

Attached is a visio of main DC WAN edge. Right now our WAE (7341) is placed directly off of ncmc-dc-rt01. Now we need to start to optimize traffice comming from all three top routers (ncmc-dc-rt01, ncmc-dc-rt05, and ncmc-dc-rt04). Were would be the best placement and IP address shceme for the WAE? Keep in mind the ncmc-dc-rt05 is a 3750g.

    James,
I might consider putting the WAEs off the aggregation switches and doing hardware redirection (L2 redirect, mask assign, redirect in) on the 4900s. Otherwise you won't be able to use all three WAN routers as on will require L2 redirects and the other only support GRE.
    Hope that helps,
    Dan

  • 7341 problem 4.2.3c

    Hi,
I need help with a problem with a WAE 7341.
I installed and activated this device yesterday. Once inline, it came up to Gig full duplex and I rebooted. Everything was fine.
Today I realised my device was down; not answering to pings; I go to check and it is turned on but the inline card is in a bypass state!
I tried the console port and nothing would come up. so i rebooted the device...
It loaded correclty (no issues) the I realised that I have a lot of the following messages in my syslog.txt file:
    kernel: %WAAS-SYS-4-900000: Neighbour table overflow.
ntpd[5247]: %WAAS-UNKNOWN-5-899999: kernel time sync status change 0001
kernel: %WAAS-SYS-4-900000: printk: 627 messages suppressed.
exec_license: %WAAS-CLI-5-170098: The License Transport has not been purchased.
not repeated once or twice but hundreds!
the ones that show up most are:
    kernel: %WAAS-SYS-4-900000: Neighbour table overflow.
kernel: %WAAS-SYS-4-900000: printk: 627 messages suppressed.
    Any ideas?
could this have caused by WAAS to crash?
    Patrick

I'm glad to inform you that the issue got resolved.
It was indeed caused by this bug: CSCtd13825 which is rated 6 enhancement.
The gig 1/0 management interface of the 7341 was in a /16 network and due to the ARP issue, the Cisco WAE-7341 would completely hang!
TAC explained that WAAS cannot have more than 1024 ARP entries in its ARP cache at the same time.
WAAS doesnt implement a cleanup mechanism or a failsafe for this issue and therefore the overflow.
In my case, these messages appeared in large amounts in the syslog.txt file and caused the WAE to hang. It became unresponsive to ping, telnet, ssh and the inline card went into bypass or passthrough mode.
The solution is easy, put the interface in a smaller network with access to the CM...

  • WAE 574 resilience query

    Hi,
I am implementing WAAS on our network and am currently in the pilot phase, we are using WAE-7341 at our 3 data centre sites and 30 WAVE-574's at our branch sites.
As standard the WAVE-574's come with one hard drive, I am looking to buy an additional hard drive to go into each 574 so the disks are configured in a RAID 1 for resiliance.
My question is, if we were to keep with having just the one hard drive in each device and that hard drive went down, how would it effect the WAE and optimisation?
Would the WAE stay up? would it carry on accelerating traffic without local caching? if the device was rebooted would the device come back up? I'm trying to get an idea of what impact it would have if we didn't have a resiliance hard drive configuration.
Many thanks in advance for your help
    Adam

    Adam,
The 574 equipped with a single hard drive that failed would stay accessible on the network but would not be able to optimize or accelerate any traffic. The disk when replaced would also need the operating system re-installed. If the 574 were equipped with two disks in a RAID1 and were to lose a disk it would continue to function normally but without the redundancy. The failed disk would simply need to be replaced and redundancy would return once the RAID rebuilds anywhere from 2 to 5 hours.
    Regards
    Dave

  • Cisco WAE - Loadbalancing with WCCP

    Hello,
I have 7341 and I am reaching the connection limit. I want to read more about the loadbalancing WAE 7341 with 512 and 612 appliance. Is it possible to loadbalance between cross platform, if it does, how wccp knows that 7341 has 12000 connection limit and 512 and 612 have 1500 and 2000 respectively.
    Thank You

    Hi,
we have weight option in WCCP configuration of WAE's which will determine the ratio of redirected traffic to be sent to a particular WAE in cluster. below is the link for more info..

    Hello
our central manager frequently reports for one WAE
WCCP missing assignment alarm for service id: 62.
WCCP missing assignment alarm for service id: 61.
But the WAE seems to run nornal and we can't find eny problem and event on the WAE (7341 device). By screening the CCO documentaion we also couldn't find any explanation for this error log.
We have an installation with app. 30 WAEs/WAVEs in with software release 4.2.3.
Could you please provide us some hints for troubleshooting.
    Many thanks in advance!

    Hello
I have the same issue and I noticed when we install a new location with two waves and wccp, it has for some reason an impact on exicting waves running in wccp mode:
the alarm ''WCCP missing assignment alarm for service id: 61 or 62'' riased on locations that were already in production.
new location : 192.168.X.21 is one of  the new wave, 192.168.X.219 is the 2nd wave.A.B.C.D is the router loopback ip address
    A.B.C.D
Existing waves (on different locations) already running in WCCP are : 192.168.Y.64.
Router (192.168.M.52) for another location where waves : 192.168.M.50 & 192.168.M.52 are already in service: Loopback ip is E.F.G.H
any idea why configuring wccp in one location has an impact on other locations

  • Upgrading from ACNS to WAAS on a 674

Looking for the steps to change over to Waas on a ACNS formated system.
Anybody out there completed these steps,  being done via Console connection.

    Hi,
You will need to download WAAS Recovery ISO from CCO. Please follow below steps,
    1) Download the WAAS recovery CD from Cisco CCO. It will based on Software image you want to download,
For example WAAS 4.2.3 - Image name is "waas-rescue-cdrom-4.2.3.7-k9.iso"
    2) Once you downloaded the image and burned it in a CD please insert it in the WAE-674-K9 device
    3) Reboot the WAE. After the WAE boots, you see the following menu:
    Installer Main Menu:
      1. Configure Network
      2. Manufacture flash
      3. Install flash cookie
      4. Install flash image from network
      5. Install flash image from cdrom
      6. Install flash image from disk
      7. Recreate RAID device (WAE-674/7341/7371 only)
      8. Wipe out disks and install .bin image
      9. Exit (Eject and reboot)
    4) Choose option 2 to prepare the flash memory.
This step prepares a cookie for the device.
    5) Choose option 3 to install the flash cookie that you prepared in the previous step.
    6) Choose option 5 to install the flash image from the CD-ROM.
    7) If you are working with a WAE-7341, WAE-7371, or WAE-674 device, choose option 7 to recreate the RAID array.
    8) Choose option 8 to wipe the disks and install the binary image.
This step prepares the disks by erasing them. The WAAS 4.x.x image is installed.
    11) Choose the option 9 to reboot the WAE
Once you complete above steps the WAE will be loaded with WAAS Software.
    Hope this helps,
    Best Regards,
    Rahul
