WAE - Inline Module - Interception ACL - Statistics
Hello, I have a wae connected inline to the ISP Router.
The Router provide connectivity to Internet from a serial interface and from another serial interface to the DataCenter.
When I look the statistic of the Optimization/Acceleration, the value are related to all traffic; between branch office and datacenter, and to Internet.
I want the statistics only of the traffic between branch office and data center
if I use an Interception ACL on the wae with permit the traffic between private network, I can see the statistic related only this quantity of traffic between private networks ?
or, Do you have suggestions to have statistics without internet traffic ?
hi Marco,
You can create an ACL to limit the traffic intercepted.Make sure that the interception ACL is created to match traffic flow bidirectionally on the device. Interception ACLs need to match only the TCP SYN packet to exclude a session from optimization. Considering both directions of traffic flow will help limit unanticipated optimization traffic.

I still don't fully understand how your network design really is but I hope this helps.

Switch with trunk to router, whith the wae inline between them I cannot get between vlans, from the wan side I can get to all resource, Any ideas what to configure or look at
Are you trying to only intercept one VLAN or all the VLANs? You can configure this on the inline card's interface or in the CM GUI under the Interception section for that device.

Cisco Clean Access - Intercept ACL standard config
If implementing an out-of-band CCA solution, with a router acting as the Network Access Device (NAD), would the Intercept ACL standard config be to allow access to the network, or just to the submet where the AAA Policy Server, etc are?
If there are URLs to examples, that would help too.
Thanks!First, you will need to open up traffic in the unauthenticated role for tcp port 636 to the LDAP server.
The deal with the certs is that you need the CAM to be able to trust the LDAP servers cert, so you need the root cert corresponding to the LDAP servers cert. You can then upload that on the CAM under "CCA Manager" > "SSL Certificate", drop the box down to "Import Certificate" and then drop the next box down to "Trust non-standard CA". Upload and install
the root to there. -
WAE Inline Deployment on a router intergated switch module
Hi,
Is it possible to simulate an inline WAE deployment on a router with an integrated switch module?
Thanks.
Ed.Ed,
Unfortunitely you have to use WCCP or PBR with NME-WAE. Inline is only possible with the inline card on an appliance.

WAE Inline Adapter and High Availability
What is the recommendation to achieve high availability (and load sharing?) using two WAE's in a DC with inline adapters being used for interception rather than WCCPv2? Any ideas greatly appreciated.
Ken,
Generally I would recommend interception with either WCCP or a L4-7 load balancer like ACE/ACE Appliance/CSM. Both of these are considered best practice for DC deployments as they both can handle high amounts of traffic, can handle WAEs going offline and can load balance many WAEs in a cluster. WCCP might be slightly more flexible where and how you can deploy it.
Both of the following interception techniques are not recommended for data centers, but I list just as FYI:
- Inline cards in appliances can be configured in serial to give you high availability, but you don't get load balancing. The second appliance only starts optimizing traffic once the first WAE starts passing traffic through on overload. Inline interception is usually used for remote offices, however it has been deployed in DCs.
- PBR can be configured for high availability with next-hop features, however there is no available load balancing. The first WAE has to fail completely and then a second WAE can come into play. Overloaded traffic is not optimized at all.
Hope that helps,

WAE inline or WCCP on data center
Hi all,
Is WAE(674)inline mode fine for data center or should I go for WCCP?
Any idea about throuput of inline adaptor?
ThanksHi Nomair,
I usually start with WCCP in the DC due to the fact that you are limited to intercepting on 2 links with the inline card currently and most DC scenarios have requirements of using more then 2 links (or routers).
Thanks,

We are looking to deploy WAAS enterprise wide in a MPLS network I currently support. Our client routers function as both CE and PE - the egress interface is label switched and the customer host facing interface resides within a MPLS VRF. We would like to deploy the NM-WAE modules at each site. Are these modules VRF aware? I need to perform the WCCP redirection/inspection on the interface assigned to the VRF. I couldn't find any documents specific to WAAS and MPLS. Has anyone dealt with this yet? Thanks in advance.
HI,
The VRF awareness for 12.4(T) is still probably 8-12 months out. VRF aware WCCP features are definitely in the pipeline, but nothing has been publically published on availability timelines.
It's now publically available on the forum... but , I've only found it on the 3750 and 3550 documentation.
at the 3750 you will need to place the redirect statement on each of the VLANs, ip wccp 61 redirect in
Kindly find here GRE Tunnel with VRF Configuration Example:

I have gotten as far as the WAE registering the router:
"WCCP configuration for TCP Promiscuous service 61 and 62 succeeded.

configure WCCP service 61 and 62 on the corresponding router."

WAAS inline without module?
Is it possible to use a WAE appliance (WAE-512-K9) as an inline device without purchasing a WAE-INLN-4CG=? The device has 2 NICS, and I really wouldn't have a need for more than 1 port in and 1 port out.
Thanks,
JasonJason,
The inline module is required to deploy the WAE using inline interception.
Thanks,

Waas (4.2.1) in inline mode not optimizing
Hello
noob-question here regarding waas, sorry for that.
But I've been reading all day and I can't understand why this isn't working.
It seems traffic is not optimized, the graphs in the central manager are basically empty.
I'm currently working on a deployment with 3xappliances
Where 1 is the manager and 2 WAE
Location of these WAE is pretty much in different continents.
I will call them New York and Sydney from here.
The hardware of the WAE's is
New York WAVE-274-K9
Sydney WAVE-574-K9
And these are setup in inline mode.
So basically we have a switch and an ASA on both sites, in between is the WAE listening to all VLANs.
The ASA's are configured for inspect waas.
Versions on all of them is 4.2.1.
In NY all I'm seeing when I issue 'sh stat conn' is
PT in progress
PT No peer
This is making me think that somehow the WAE's are not finding each other.
In the central manager under both WAE's
Automatically Configure Peer is checked.
However I'm not sure how to verify that they are actually discovering each other.
Below are some show commands, not sure if they are to any help.
Looking at the inlinegroup in New York

Hi,
For the first time I am deploting WAE deviece in DC center. Since this is a new technology for me. Can some bosy help me in doing physical connectivity. APNYour account team could be the first place you turn, as they can get someone onsite if needed to provide in-person assistance. We also have an internal helpdesk to help Partners with new deployments and trial deployments. And there is Cisco TAC should you encounter problems during the deployment. All of these resources are staffed with people trained and experienced in WAAS.
WAAS provides multiple methods of deployment and interception, including (but not limited to) WCCP and Inline. Inline places the WAE in the path of the packets. WCCP places the WAE out of path of the packets and requires that the router/switch be configured to intercept packets and redirect them to the WAE.
If the WAE comes equipped with inline card, an inline group consists of a pair of interfaces marked LAN and WAN. Connect LAN to the cable connecting to the LAN-side switch/router, and connect WAN to the cable connecting to the WAN-side switch/router. The types of cabling you use, duplex and speed settings on the switches and routers, and placement of the WAE within the network are important.
However, Inline may not be the preferred method for deploying in your datacenter.
If the WAE does not come equipped with an inline card, then the Gigabit interfaces are used to connect to a router/switch, and packets must be redirected to that WAE on that interface. A single interface may be used, or the interfaces may be grouped into a port-channel or standby interface configuration. Redirection from the router/switch is generally accomplished by configuring WCCP on the router/switch and on the WAE. Packets are intercepted at the router on one or more interfaces, and redirected to the WAE. The WAE processes them, performing appropriate optimizations, and egresses them back to the router/switch which forwards them to the destination.
Decide on the interception method. Read the appropriate sections in the documentation and decide how best to connect the WAE and configure interception, based on your datacenter's unique requirements. Probably the fastest way to get started would be to read the quick-start guide, and use the CLI-based setup tool.

Duplex problem with inline card "WAN0" again
Hi,
We got duplex problem again "new site" for the inline port WAN0, LAN0 is ok.
We have tried crossover and straight through cable, without any look still 100/ half duplex.
The PTT router int fa0/0 have been to 100/full and auto/auto still 100 half in the WAE.
The WAE have been in 100/full, no link or auto/auto link but 100/half.
What can be the problem, as we have this issue with most of our 574 and 274, the 674 have have no problem at all?
Below are some output from the WAE and router.

Jan RockstedtHi Jan,
If you are connecting Router to WAN0_0 port, you should use cross-over cable under most of the circumstances and unless you are using all gig interfaces on both sides. This will avoid any hardware limitations due to non-Auto-MDIX supported hardware.
Cisco strongly recommend that you do not use half-duplex connections on the WAE or on routers, switches, or other devices.
You will find more information here: Cabling
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/app_ntwk_services/waas/wae/module/inline/installation/guide/17880fru.html#wp39911
Further, there is a possibility that the interface on Router / WAE inline adapater / cable might be bad. I would suggest following in that case.
1. Using a new cross-over / stright cable. if the issue continues, proble lies on the interface sides.
2. Using a different port on router. if the issue continues, problem is with WAN0_0 port of WAE.
3. Try connecting wan0_0 port to another switch / router to see if it negotiates at full duplex. If it still continues at half duplex, there is an issue with WAN0_0 port most probably.
4. Try connecting secondary gig port or WAN0_1 port to same router interface. If the issue continues, problem may be with router FA0/0 interface.
If you find that issue is with either router / WAE inline interface, please open a TAC case for RMA.
Hope this helps.

WAAS - Can I mix & match inline and off path installations?
Hi - I'm designing a WAAS solution which requires that I deploy the Data centre WAE inline (the core switch is a 3750 which doesn't support WCCP). I plan on using NME modules on the branch sites. Is this mix and matching of deployments permitted or will I run into problems.
Many Thanks :)
DomDom,
Absolutely, you can mix and match. As a matter of fact, a lot of implementations are the opposite with inline at the edge and WCCP at the core. You should have no trouble with this at all.
BTW, the 3750 DOES support WCCP v2 at line rate (i.e. in hardware) with newer versions of IOS if you want to try it. It requires L2 adjacency to the WAEs and the WAEs need to be configured w/L2 redirect/L2 return and mask assign. The 3750 needs to have redirect in on the interfaces and a routing SDM template configured.
Hope that helps,

Hi All
I have a design where all my WAE are inline in the path of traffic .
One of my WAE Edge shows on the CM as offline and after half an hour it comes online , again it went offline after 1 hour and so on.
What might be the issue and when its offline I can not even remotely telnet to the management intrerface of WAE but its keep on by passing the traffic.
Any body face the same issue , the problem with hardware or any suggestion.
RegardsHi
Very interesting finding
1- Branch WAE Edge status on CM GUI is offline.
2- Unable to telnet Branch WAE Edge remotely.
BUT
1- Able to telnet Branch WAE Edge from the local netwrok.
2- When I telnet and check the cms info of Branch WAE Edge its showing 'inline'.
3- Branch WAE Edge is intercepting the traffic and optimizing and accelerating the traffic.
Any body can shed light on this issue why I am getting status off line on WAAS CM for this Branch WAE Edge.
Regards
