WAG160N - setting as Access Point; help needed

Hi all, I have a WAG160N router currently acting as my main router and a spare Technicolor TG58n. I want to use one of them as a router extension but 1) not sure if it matters which way round, and then 2) how to do it!..
Also, if it helps/ is relevant, I do have a Homeplug in the lounge, where I want to put the router extension (going into a Gigabite switch, out to the TV, Blu-Ray and Amp). Not sure if plugging the extension router into this is worth it?
Thanks for all your help guys....

Hi there, Dean. It may be best to let the Linksys router act as a second router. You may refer to this link, http://kb.linksys.com/Linksys/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=785463d9ecaf4cac84aed245b08d615f_3733.xml&pid=80&r...
Just use the LAN to WAN steps.
By the way, check if the Homeplug works directly behind the router. If it does, then it should work while connected to the Gigabit switch that's in turn wired to the Linksys router.
Hope that helps.

  • Help needed setting up access point to public network

    Hi from a newbie,
Assuming they are suitable, I want to use one (or two) AP1232AG-E-K9 access points for Internet connection through a public wireless network (BTFON), where wire broadband is not an option. I've downloaded what I think is the correct manual for the APs and I'm now scratching my head as to where and how to start setting them up. I want to use these Cisco APs in the hope they will give me better wireless performance than I'm currently getting, which is frequently flakey.
I've tried to reset the APs to the factory default but there seem to be different ways of doing this depending on what you want and what you've got. I made up a console cable  to access the console but there even appear to be different versions of  this so I'm not sure if the cable I have is the correct one.
I have setup and used lower end wireless devices in the past but these Cisco units seem real complicated and I'm going to need help in getting them working.
Any assistance would be much appreciated.
    Kind regards,
    Glenn.

  • N97 OTA access point help

hi all, got a probem here that seems to been doin my head in over the last few days. basically i bought a brand new locked to tmobile N97, im a virgin customer.. now, i'm wanting to do a firmware upgrade.. due to having an old **bleep** laptop that only has 248mb of ram i cant d the upgrade via nokia pc suite so my only other option is OTA.. right, so, i dial *#0000# then go to options, then check for updates... up pops a message saying a need to define an access point, ok.. not understanding it much i try and manually add some stuff myself, to no avail... then i do some forum posting and manage to get these settings: Server Name Nokia Server ID Nokia Server password firmupservpass Access point [select your preferred AP] Host address https://dms.update.nokia.com/dms/omadm Port 443 User name nokiams DM password nokiamspass Allow configuration Yes Auto accept all requests Yes but... that hasnt solved my problem, when entered and i try to connect to do the upgrade i get a connection error. my only option is this forum, its a nokia fone and a nokia forum i cant get my head round it as i can use the internet n my fone brilliantly, surely the internet and the OTA access point are the same thing?

To add an access point select settings-connectivity-destinations-Access point , Automatically search for available access points ?, select yes and choose access point. Then go into Internet and set the priorities to WLAN number 1 T-Mobile number 2 etc
    Good Luck
PS Nokia Software Updater should still work on computer, even with low memory or weak internet , just a bit slower.

  • Wireless-G Access Point HELP!

Ok, I currently am running my office with highspeed internet. I have the Internet running into the Router and than into the Wireless Access Point. BUT!, I have 2 intruders! Possibly slowing down my internet speed. I need to know how to setup a password protected lock on the wireless networking!
    Thanks,
    Ryan
NOTE: I did misplace my installation disc for the Access Point!

simple... you just need to open up the set-up page of the access point. by default the IP adress of your access point is 192.168.1.245
to secure the wireless router, follow these steps: (do it on a hard-wired computer)
open a web browser, type in http://192.168.1.245
    username: blank, password: admin
go to wireless tab, change SSID, set channel to 11, then save settings
go to wireless security subtab, enable it, then select a security mode, example WEP 64 bit. in the key 1, type in a 10 digit characters (0-9 , a-f), then save the settings
to connect to a secured wireless network
right click on your wireless network connection icon (commonly a single computer icon, found at the bottom system tray where the clock is located at)
view available wireless network, if the network name(SSID) shows up, connect to it, then type in the exact key. confirm it then connect. once connected, try to go online. and that's it

  • Access Point Help

I have 3 1131AG access points that i am setting up in my office building. I would like to setup each ap in such a way that if a user is connected wirelessly that can "roam" throughout the building, and if they get dropped off, once they are in range again to any of the 3 ap's they will connect automatically. What do I need to do in order to make this happen?

As for security, the simplest most secure method I can suggest to you would be WPA2-PSK. Use a very strong Pre-Shared key, 10 character, alpha numeric and special character with AES encryption. Unless you have a radius server, then you could set up PEAP.
The only way I can think of setting up notification would be using SNMP traps.

  • Setting email access point

I'm trying to set my internet access point for emails to automatic. But it only gives me an option to pick one. I want it to connect to my few preffered access points only so how do I fix this.
    Appreciate your help

    I found the solution...I think.
If you set it on default connection then it should just connect to the network your on, or the next priority.

  • Set up access points? Nokia 5233

I got rid of all the access points on my phone because I didn't want any extra charges.
But now I want to go onto the Ovi Store to get some apps, but I need to re-set up the connection. Can anyone tell me how to do so?

You'll have to contact ur service provider for the settings. Either they'll tell u how to manually set them up or will send them via sms which you'll have t save & apply.
Please mark the post as solution if it solves your problem.

  • Is there any way I can control which specific access point I connect (and stay connected) to from amongst a set of access points with the same SSID?

I'm working from a boat in a harbor in which the ISP has deployed numerous access points around the periphery.  All the access points share the same SSID and each is configured to use either channel 1, 6 or 11.   From my location, there are over a dozen of these access points "visible" (based on the the output of WiFi Scanner) with a range of RSSI and S/N values that vary over time.
The ISP has told me that the quality of my connection should be "perfectly fine" for any access point with an RSSI value better than -75, but I know from experience that my connection quality is miserable (i.e. < 50Kbps download) for almost all of these, including those with RSSI values better than -75.  There is at least one exception, however, which gives me on the order of 2Mbps download, which is "great" in this context.
I've tried using a more powerful USB antenna plugged into my MacBook Air (mid 2011), but as far as I can tell, it really doesn't make much difference.  Neither does my location within the boat.   The overriding factor seems to be which access point I happen to connect up to.
I should point out that the closest access points are about 75 yards away, with many of them being several hundred yards away or more.  I'm guessing that even though the signal strength of some of the distant access points is causing them to get "chosen" some times, the results are unacceptable due to the distance.
I'm hoping that I can determine, through experimentation, which access point(s) provide(s) acceptable performance and then configure my Mac to limit my connection to those points through whatever mechanism I need to use (e.g. channel, MAC id, etc.).

Establishing a wireless connection with a client computer is left to the access point for various reasons. One reason that your Mac may not connect to the strongest access point is that it may have reached a limit of the number of clients it can serve, leaving it unable to accept a connection with another. The limit may not be very large.
Suppose that happens, and your Mac establishes a connection with a more distant access point having a weaker signal. Then, suppose a client drops off the network. Doesn't this mean your Mac will switch to the stronger access point? Not necessarily. The throughput delivered to and from your Mac would have to drop below a threshold specified in the AP for it to drop the client, leaving your Mac free to connect with another one. The reason for this is to prevent rapid switching from one AP to another in an area in which two signals are of approximately equal quality. If that were to occur the frequent and repetitive handshaking between the two devices would slow throughput to zero.
In an environment in which several access points are broadcasting the same SSID, Apple provides no insight as to how it determines which access point to choose. This is the reason I suspect this "choice" is a function of the router, or access point. The connection originates with it, not the Mac.
Now, what would solve your dilemma would be to determine a way to control the access point with which your Mac connects, by specifying the access point's unique MAC address for example. In this happy circumstance, you could maintain an editable "whitelist" or "blacklist" of the harbor's access points and be able to choose which among them you prefer.
I do not believe OS X maintains such a record of MAC addresses though, only those of the routers it uses. If I am correct about that, such a solution is unlikely to exist. Don't let that discourage you from searching for one though... I would concentrate on something like "selecting access point by specific MAC address".
I did find this patent application though:

  • Setting up access points for public access

Okay, here's the situation. I have a PowerMac G4/1.25GHz dual processor running Server X 10.3.9 with four Mac clients (a small law office). Up until recently, everyone had also been running (client) 10.3.9, but I started upgrading some of them to 10.4 (currently 10.4.5). When I did this, they started running into problems with Word sometimes giving a "network or file permission error" when attempting to save documents to the server. After weeks of posting questions to Word support and trying everything in the book that I could think of, I found Apple recently posted what appears to be the answer to this (article 302979, "Microsoft Office applications fail to save to a server volume." The problem? I have all four users logging into the same account on the server, and when one of them logs out, it zaps everything in a Microsoft-created temp folder on the server, including temp files created by open documents created by other clients. Sheesh.
I had everyone set to use the same account because they have no need of document security -- everyone should be able to get into everyone else's files on the server, period. So, because of this snafu, I've created separate accounts for each of the users. My problem now is that, if user "X" creates a file or folder on the server, user "Y" cannot modify it because it is created as read-only. Strangely, if someone modifies an existing file, it doesn't change the user rights at all -- not sure why.
I'll admit to being a bit of a novice with Server X but am familiar with parent/child folder permissions -- I think I've got everything set right, but I must obviously be missing something. Here's what I've got setup, and what I've tried. If anyone can point out how I've got this setup improperly, I really need to get this fixed... thanks.
I have a single sharepoint ("workfiles"). I used the "public" folder as an example, and set the owner to "root" and the group to "staff". Further, I set the owner, group and everyone privileges to "read & write". I've also tried setting the group to "admin". All the individual user accounts I've set are also setup as admin users. I've tried setting each users's primary group as "staff (20)" or "admin (80)". I've copied all these privileges to all enclosed items, which does reset everything to public access, but as soon as someone creates a new folder or file, that folder/file becomes private to that user (it shows up with the creator's username as "owner" (r&w), group as "admin (read-only), and others as "read-only" as well.
PS: If upgrading the server to Server X 10.4 would help, I'm sure I can arrange that.

In our law firm, the server (10.4.4), we have set access to read/write access so staff can open client files/folders, edit then and close, etc. That seems to be working okay. Before the tech worked on permissions, if someone created a letter another staff member could open it, but it was read-only.
The problem we are having is that if a file that is clicked on stationery pad and we want to edit it, it will not allow us to. For example, if we need to edit our letterhead that normally comes up as an untitled document, if I unclick the stationery pad box, it unclicks, but it still comes up as an untitled document. I even tried to unclick a stationery pad on a document that I created before the server upgrade and it wouldn't let me.
If I create a brand new document and put it on stationery pad, it comes up untitled as it should. If another user on another desktop wants to make changes, they unclick the stationery pad box, but when they open it, it comes up untitled and in checking get info, the stationery pad is selected.
The tech set it up as follows:
    Share Points and All tabs:
General tab: box to share this item and its contents is clicked
Access tab: owner, group and everyone have read/write privileges
If select dial at bottom to propagate permissions, all boxes are checked, except for access control list, which is shaded.
I cannot drag/add anything to the control list and the pencil and the minus sign is shaded
Protocol tab: Both boxes, share item using AFP and Allow AFP guest users are clicked. But for better security in reading the article, this should be unchecked.
Also under the protocol tab: the inherit permission from parent radio dial is clicked, not the use standard POSIX behavior.
    What are we missing?
    Thanks, Cheryl

  • Need to disable AP mode multicast in 1231 series access point

    Hi
I have one controller 2504 and some 1200 series access points.I am using 3 SSID .I want to use two ssid in HREAP mode but HREAP mode is not showinh in access point because multicast is enabled on AP mode. Please see the below picture
I have disabled the multicast globally from CLI.
    config network multicast global disabled
Please help me in disabling the multicast so that i can set the access point in HREAP mode.
    Thanks ....

    Hi George
I have found a document in which it is mentioned which platform are supported..
These are the restrictions to remember while you use H-REAP.
Hybrid REAP is supported only on the 1130AG, 1140, 1240, 1250, 1260,           AP801, AP 802, 1040, and AP3550 APs and on the Cisco WiSM, Cisco 5500, 4400,           2100, 2500, Flex 7500 Series Controllers, the Catalyst 3750G Integrated           Wireless LAN Controller Switch, and the Controller Network Module for           Integrated Services Routers.
But why it is giving an remark on controller tab that multicast is not supported with HREAP on this platform ?
Is this the limitation of cisco 2504 controller or the limitation of 1231 access point ?
Does that mean i can use my SSID in HREAP mode if i am using 1231 series access point ?
    Thanks...

  • MBP won't stick to access point priority setting

We have a recent MBP running 10.6.8. It will not stick to the access point priority established in the Advanced tab of Networking.
    Background:
Wireless router had to be in a back room where another laptop has to connect; when the front room signal proved too weak I ran a cable to the front room, placed a switch at the end, and connected an Engenius access point to that be short cable. It is set in access point mode sending a clear SSID that is different than the distant router. The MBP can almost always see both access points but with very different signal strengths. There seems to be no pattern, but too often the MBP in the front room will connect to the back room router. I believe it has been found to have CHANGED acces points within one session.
I believe "Bridge Mode" was available for the front room Engenius device, but the literature and web site of the manufacturer seemed to urge me in the Access Point direction. I think of this as one big network rather than two separate entities that must be "bridged". In the front room there are either one or two laptops. One in Windows7 and that can be easily switched to what is its *second* priority. When my wife wants to force her MBP to the stronger signal it seems to knock out wireless connection altogether and she sometimes has to restart!
The Engenius is a 2.4 GigaHertz device.
The IP addresses have been resolved as best I know how to do this, and the subnet is the same. When the front room MBP is "on" the stronger signal the network offers good performance.
Please let me know if I need to provide more details like IP addresses.
