Wahoo!! MSI P6N :)

At exactly 12:01 AM this morning I pressed "Power" and was greeted with the most beautiful hum and whir I think I've ever heard .
She works!  OCZ Platinum Rev 2 DDR2 800 running in dual channel out of green #1, orange #2 slots at 1.9V 5-5-5-15!!!!  This RAM is spec to run at 4-4-4-15, so I'll make that change in BIOS tonight.  I believe it won't need any more voltage either, based on the succes I had out of the orange at 4-4-4-15 with the first board.
Still have to go through all the testing - MemTest, Orthos, etc.  But hot damn its looking really good.  If you remember the OCZ would not post from my first P6N mobo's green slots.  Sure looks like it was a fluke.  I may have zapped something, it being my first build and all.  Yeeha!!!
Thanks for the support and positive vibes .

Glad that you've got your system up and running .

  • MSI P6N SLI Platinum + E6850 + 533Mhz (PC-4200) RAM?

    Hi,
I got hold of an E6850 (1333 MHz FSB) CPU for upgrade and I would like to know if it can run with 2Gb hynix RAM (533MHz PC-4200) on my MSI P6N SLI platinum (Rev 1.0). If it will run, how much performance loss would there be compared to using 667MHz or 800MHz RAM?
    Thanks.

I am not sure if the Nforce Chipset/Memory Controller is able to support a memory bus speed that is lower than FSB Clock Speed. Intel Chipset usually can't do that (1:1 usually being the minimum ratio supported).  However, on your board, the memory speed is not directly tied to the FSB Clock Speed and can be adjusted independently, so the situation may be different.  The bottom line is:  I can't tell you for sure if it will work or not and therefore suggest to simply test it and see what happens.

With the memory bus running slower than the Front Side Bus, there will be definately be a performance difference that is not insignificant.

Maximum temperature at the junction point (where the die is glued to the chip carrier inside). Max temp is 100°C for Allendale and 85°C for conroe. The internal sensor coretemp uses does not return a absolute temperature but rather how many C° is left until Tjunction is reached. So to calculate the temperature they use Tjunction - Sensor Reading = Temperature. You can see here how speedfan's wrong assumption of 85°C for allendale creates a 15°C offset.
3x for the info, but what is the thermal specs of E4300, which is 61 sth

  • Update on Pentium D 930 + MSI P6N SLi Mobo

A short time ago I was searching this forum for information concerning the compatibility of the Pentium D 930 processor with the MSI P6N Sli Mobo. It seems that this processor was not officially supported for this board. A few helpful people offered the opinion that they would likely work just fine together. I just wanted to get back to you guys and say thank you again, that turned out to be exactly the case.  :D
After an embarrassing no-post situation caused by the leftover mounting  spacers from my old board (which used 12) to my present board (which uses 9), everything went smoothly. Acronis with Universal restore allowed me to regenerate my operating system. After a lengthy update of drivers the computer was up and running smoothly and with a entirely welcome but somewhat puzzling difference. Whereas the old board (D945PVS) consistently provided an environment in which the CPU ran at 50°+ C (?!) and had transient temperatures as high as 58 - 59° C with an ambient 20° C, the new set up consistently ran below 40°. These results were consistent no matter what type of thermal pastes were used, be they my homebrewed colloidal silver in silicone stopco*k  grease or Arctic Silver.  (that's hilarious... the anti-obscenity software interpreted a fully normal English language word as obscenity)
    Well, whatever the reason....sweet.
I have only attempted simpleminded overclocking as the options are somewhat limited by the processor. With the frequency for the GPU locked at 100 MHz, simply adjusting the FSB to 1000 raised the apparent speed of the CPU to 3.75 GHz, up from the stock frequency of 3 GHz. An attempt to set the front side bus at 1060 resulted in a non-bootable system so back to 1000 it went.
I have not adjusted any of the system voltages. So far I have not stress tested this other than to simply use the computer for several hours. No apparent problems yet. The system temperatures have remained between 38 and 40° C in an ambient 20°C environment.
The only thing that nags at me, and I'm fairly sure that this is of no importance is the fact that in device manager the CPUs show yellow exclamation marks and in properties I see a message saying that certain drivers failed to load for the CPU and that other software may be taking their place. Well, whatever this actually means, it has had no detectable impact on system performance or reliability.

    Hiya flobelix
If by manually updating the drivers you mean by left clicking on them in device manager and selecting update --> search online, then yes, I did. I do not have the exact verbiage but the resultant error message was something to the effect that the drivers had installed but failed to start and something else may be taking their place.
Driver magician fails to detect that any cpu drivers are missing. Same with online testing services such as PC pitstop. | have done a cursory search using Google to find people with similar problems but I have not as of yet seen this EXACT problem.

  • Who has this setup - MSI P6N SLI Platinum & E8400

This message is intended for anyone who has the MSI P6N SLI Platinum & E8400 in a working state.
I've had the pleasure of perusing these forums for a while in hopes of finding an answer as to why my E8400 isn't working with my P6N SLI Platinum. I've updated my BIOS, I've RMA'd my chip, I've even contacted MSI support (with no reply I might add). I have been so careful when handling these components and thoroughly reading the instructions, to no avail. I've got the board and all components working with a different processor. I've tried the voltage modifications that many have said work, I've tried different memory, I even tried a different video card. So I'm stuck in the same boat as many it seems, however there are one or two posts on this forum and others where people have said they actually got it to work!
So now I really hope I can get this question answered - What is a working config? One of the things I haven't tried yet is a new power supply. My current PS is 650w, but has the 4 pin CPU power connector. From the posts I've read, it shouldn't matter if I have the 4 or the 8. But in reality, does this CPU work on the P6N Plat with an 8 pin connector? I'd be willing to go buy a new PS if thats the case! What else could possibly be the issue? Any and all feedback is appreciated. i really didn't want to start up another thread for this proc/board issue, but perhaps someone else has joined this board by now that may provide the little piece of info that I've been missing.
    Cheers,
    Aaron

according to the website, the 1.6 BIOS had cpu updates in march so I's assume it would have support for the E8400.
What exactly happens when you turn on the system with the E8400?

  • MSI P6N SLI board, trouble again

Well bought a new Adaptec 31205 raid card and a few Sas drives.
Strange enough the card is NOT seen by the board. Furthermore i cannot alter the bios of the board, nor the card gets detected.
Drives spindle, card is powered on, cursor stays at the left side of the screen.
Any suggestions for this problem are more then welcome.
Had to reinstall the Dell Scsi card and drives.
    thanks,
    Swa

ok, i give the info i got:
    MSI P6N SLI board:
Intel extreme 6800 3 ghz duo processor
    4 gb 800 mhz memory PC6400 Transend
Club 3d Radeon X1600 512 mb video card
Adaptec 31205 Raid controller with 256 mb cache
    5 Cheetah T10 15k 300 gb drives
Right now Dell Perc4e controller (Scsi) in a PCI-E port (8 lanes) with 3 15k Scsi drives of 36 gb in Raid 5.
    Board works with the Perc4E.
As said, drives spindle, lights on card are ok, no bios, not of the motherboard, not of the Adaptec.
    Thanks,

Any one know about the release of  (MSI) P6N Diamond (680i) SLI Motherboard

    Quote
honestly, if it's not for SLI, I think I'll wait for ATI, ops, AMD RD600 chipset mobo instead.
I complete agree with that.  Just getting bored with the Opteron system. I have an insider I am getting a e6600 from for 1/2 price this week, so I was looking at boards.  Think I want to try the 680i over the 975, and while the RD600 looks like it will be a winner it's still a ways out.
MSI had stated end of December for the P6N and that time is upon us.
Honestly after the last purchase I swore I would never buy another MSI, but I kind of crave pain that way, after about a year of mods on this current board, and emails with the MSI BIOS crew I think the K8N SLI was the 2nd best Nforce 4 board made out there.  Plus it gives me another forum area to read here beside the Nvidia, and overclocking sections.

  • MSI P6n Nvidia 680 chipset MB

Hi, I've noticed that the MSI P6n Nvidia 680 chipset MB is now on sale in the UK.
It looks like a generic build like the BFG, EVGA and ECS variants. The MSI has the shortest warranty @ 2 years! A bit stingy when you consider the evga has a 10 year warranty!!
It will be interesting to see any posts regarding it and its BIOS, although I think NVIDIA has written the bios for the other makes listed above? I wonder if MSI will write their own? I hope not as then they can spend more time sorting the problems we have with the existing boards!!

That picture would be the P6N Diamond! should have onboard X-Fi Xtreme audio and will be MSI design.
The picture on scan certainly suggests the P6N is the Foxconn/Nvidia reference desgin.  I doubt MSI will even touch the BIOS on this board and will probably be identical the the other ref boards EVGA/BFG etc.
As for a ten year warrnaty its mainly about marketing ( I would love to see somebody try and RMA a boar d after 9.5 years!), its to get users to purchase a product based on value adding.  10 years warrnaty may hold some value for some people but I find the EU statratory 24 months is about right.

You need to borrow an old s775 processor and to test.

  • MSI P6N Diamond Driver Probl

I recently was one of the brave few to order a MSI P6N Diamond motherboard. This board is only few months old if that, and of course all the drivers and bios for this board are buggy. One thing I should note about this board is if you disable the IDE controller, your cpu voltage will shoot up to .7 volts( stock is .3) and if your lucky , fry your brand new E6600 chip. (NOT COOL)?Besides that fun I will get to the point. I could of cared less about the onboard X-FI , but with PCI slots going by by and no one is making any PCIexpress sound cards (that I am aware of). I sorta figured well shoot, now I am stuck with this sound card.
At first, I was , wait its a creative labs sound blaster X-FI, those are those new ones that seem really cool (NOT). I wont lie, in games it sounds million times better then my old Audigy did, no more pops or cracks (5 year old card) the EAX effects sound more life like, 5. channels works cleaner. I was like "way-a-go creative!"? Then the problems started.
I loaded up my favorite program Fruityloo
    ps.
After looking over the sound properties , I notice there was no ASIO cards to be found? Hmm.... Could? naa, no ASIO on a creative labs sound card? At first I thought I must of time warp back to the Li've! days, shoot at least I could use KX drivers make that baby work great!? This time I was left in the dark ?No problem, I will just goto creative.com and download the new drivers, forget those MSI drivers came with the board, I would rather use the manufactures drivers instead anyhow (creative). WRONG!! "setup could not find any supported devices in your system"?... Figures ?So i tryed to boot leg the drivers and force them to work , naa that wont work. So I am guessing Creative WILL NOT support this sound card because they didnt install it on to the motherboard, MSI did, they are the ones who do the driver support, go bug them! (as i would figure). MSI says "well we use there drivers off there site and make them work with our boards, they are up-to-date!" I dont know , this sucks, is there a way i can rip off the X-fi chip on my motherboard and get a refund, heck shoot me over a audigy 2 at least those work 'ok'....
?Besides that ASIO problem, I notice FEAR Combat will BSOD and sometimes say a file called "t3filt.sys" was involved, funny that file comes up as a "Sensaura" file? I have no clue what thats all about, I know this if I disable the onboard sound card from the BIOS, the system runs 00% stable, I enable it, game will randomly crash....
I do know what a computer is and how to get drivers working, but I would almost bet my problem is the driver, and not the hardware (I hope). Sean-

so how bad is it's does this mean iam SOL or what, i just got done reading one of those other threads on here about the X-FI extreme audio scam, I guess iam right up in there with the rest guys. I cant jerry rig the drivers at all, is there any third party drivers that will work? What can one do?If it comes down to it I will litterly desolider the x-fi chip off the board, no sence in having it on there if iam not going to use it?Probley snap it in half when iam done and mail it back to creative.
