Wait for 2013 Mac Mini or get a new iMac?

Mac Mini's seem a lot better value as you're not paying for the monitor and they are also a lot better to update.
The iMac doesn't allow you to update hardware yourself really.
Mac Mini's are due the update. I'm thinking to wait as the fastest processor at the cheapest price is quite important to me. Also the Mac Mini has been out for 1 year today.
I could buy an Mac Mini in the time being and take it back in 14 days if it's not to speed and then buy a iMac to see the difference myself in speed, while I'm waiting for the mac Mini. I could possibly even try both that way and maybe i'll just fall in love with the iMac and hopefully the new mac Mini will be released in the time being.
I know the Mac Mini's processor will be slower but the latest one will no doubt be an i7 which will no doubt be fast. Also worried about overheating with the mac mini.
What should I do?

One way or another you are paying for the monitor whether you get a Mac mini, an iMac, a Powerbook, or a Mac Pro. The difference is can you replace the monitor and the CPU separately or do you have to replace them as a unit. I have used iMacs for years and loved them, but some months ago I switched to a Mac mini with an Apple Thunderbolt monitor. Upgradability is not the forte of any Mac short of the Mac Pro and its upgradability is almost entirely from external devices. Only Apple knows what the next iMac and Mac mini will be like, but the new new Mac Pro demonstrates what Apple's engineers are thinking of.
That said, not even the rumor sites are saying anyghing about a new Mac mini so I would not hold my breath waiting on a new one. So if you need and/or want a Mac mini, now is as probably as good a time as any to get one. My 2.6GHz i7 with a 1.1TB Fusion drive, 16GB of RAM and a 27" Tunderbolt monitor is proving to be a very good and reliable machine. Fast enough that I have never felt any speed constraints. The biggest limiting factor is probably the video, but I am not into RPG or other heavy duty game use so that is not a problem. FWIW I ended up spending roughly the same amount on the fully tricked out Mac mini with the TB monitor as a comprarably equipped iMac. I will get well financially in a few years when I buy another faster and more powerful Mac mini, or maybe even a Mac Pro if I am feeling really flush at the time.
By the way when I do upgrade I already have plans to use my current Mac mini as a "headless" file server tucked away in a closet somewhere.

  • Video card problem for 2013 Mac Mini.

I downloaded a game and when I try to shoot it up it says critical error. It says to update the video card driver and is hard to find which one to download.

What game...? Check the game spec's.
The integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000 in the Mac Mini may not support that game.

  • Replacing an old Mac Mini and getting the new Mac to reference the existing iTunes account stored on a NAS drive.

I'm getting rid of an old Mac Mini which has it's iTunes library stored on a NAS drive. I want the replacement Mac to reference and use this existing NAS stored iTunes library rather than loading the entire contents onto the new Mac. What do I need to do?

Open iTunes with the option key pressed. You should see a window asking you to choose a library, create a library and cancel. Select choose a library and navigate to the NAS drive.

  • Is it possible to burn CDs on a Mac Mini attached to a new iMac?

I'd like to use my Mini essentially as an external backup drive, while also being able to utilise its superdrive as a CD/DVD burner. Is this possible? What is the optical connection? I no longer have a monitor for the Mini (which was running Mountain Lion).

Hi Alxx911, and John Hammer1. After reading John's reply - " You can plug something into it's headphone jack. though" . I thought i'd try out of curiosity. I plugged in some headphones. I didn't expect anything to happen  and nothing happened. The audio jack is for the Dell soundbar which is optional.
Here's a direct copy and paste from the users manual: Section About Your Monitor.
Attaching the Soundbar AX510 / AX510PA (Optional) CAUTION: Do not use with any device other than the Dell Soundbar. NOTE: The Soundbar power connector (+12 V DC output) is for the optional Dell Soundbar AX510/AX510PAonly. To attach the Soundbar: 1. Working from the back of the monitor, attach the Soundbar by aligning the two slots with the two tabs along the bottom of the monitor. 2. Slide the Soundbar to the left until it snaps into place. 3.  Connectthe Soundbar with the DC power connector. 4. Insert the mini stereo plug from the back of the Soundbar into the computerís audio output jack. For HDMI/DP, you can insert the mini stereo plug into the monitorís audio output port.  If there is no sound, check your PC if the Audio output is configured to HDMI/DP output.
This monitor has no speakers. (Like John Hammer1 mentioned). The no speakers feature was one of the reasons I chose this monitor.
    Good Luck !

    Hi there,
The simplest way is to drag it across wirelessly using the 'Airdrop' application once both computers are near one another. 'Airdrop' can be found near the top, on the left hand side menu, within 'Finder'.

Make sure the mini-displayport/TB plug is fully seated.  It may look fully plugged in but isn't.
Make sure the Displays system preferences has an Arrangement tab.  No Arrangement means the monitor is not being detected.
    Do a smc reset.
If none of this works I suggest you take it back to apple (along with your mini).

    Hi there,
Can anyone tell me how to make make Garageband ignore HDMI as an audio output-device on a 2013 Mac mini i7 using an Apogee jam as an input for bass and a Behringer USB DAC with RCA audio output? Now it keeps on prompting me: Do you want want to use the HDMI device (monitor without audio) for audio output? I'm also suffering massive audio lag issues with the Apogee jam after waking the mini from sleepmode, wich pretty much renders it useless.
    Thanks in advance,
    Grtz T.

I think the easiest way to do this is to have the EyeTV app running in one user account and sent via HDMI to the TV, and use a separate user account for Screen Sharing. Both logins can be active at the same time and with Lion you can connect via screen sharing to which ever login you need.
With regards to the Mac video resolution changing, when it is not the current input on your AV receiver. This is 'normal', if the Mac sees no signal it drops down the a lower level. What you need is to buy a HDMI Detective Plus which tricks the Mac in to always seeing a signal and hence it will not drop down the resolution. See http://www.gefen.com/kvm/dproduct.jsp?prod_id=8005
The Mac mini does have an IR receiver. This can be used with the EyeTV app, iTunes, and similar. Yes I believe EyeTV would run for prolonged periods quite happily, it is has been around for a long time and had most of the rough edges polished off. However one issue you will have to deal with is that it does not automatically update its program guide data. For this you might have to write or modify an AppleScript. Elgato support or their user forums will be a lot of help.
You can set EyeTV to convert recordings to an iTunes (Apple TV) compatible format and then delete them from EyeTV.
The HDMI Detective should solve your handshaking problems.

No it does not. The 2 are separate.
To get Pages on your Mac mini purchase it from the Mac App Store. The icon is on your Dock.

To get Apps FOR my mac mini NOT iPhone or iPad.

    BT ...
Your profile shows you are running LIon v10.7 so you should be able to launch the App Store from your Apple menu > App Store, or from your Dock, or your Applications folder.
If you can't locate the App Store, installing the OS X Lion Update 10.7.3 (Client Combo) will reinstall the App Store for you.
Restart your Mac after the combo is installed.

  • Webcam on a 2013 Mac Mini

I'm using a 2013 Mac Mini running on OS X Mavericks and my recently retired PlayStation 3 left me with a PlayStation Eye. I was hoping I could use it as a webcam on my OS X Apps so I downloaded Macam.
The case: It only works with the Macam app, and I've transferred the driver into the folder it has directed me to but the camera doesn't work with ANY of my apps (like PhotoBooth, FaceTime, Skype, etc.) except for the Macam app itself. Any suggestions on what to do?

Easiest fix I know is to get a Mac Compatible Web Camera.  There are many, but the link shows several possibilities.

  • How do I use my 26" Polaroid FLM-2601 Television as a montor for my mac mini?

How do I use my 26" Polaroid FLM-2601 Television as a montor for my mac mini? I keep getting "no signal" for every resolution and refresh rate I've tried both for VGA and DVI settings (listed in the back of the manual for the polaroid tv and a few people posted online).
I  plug the VGA cable into my old monitor, changing the settings and move the VGA input cable to the TV,  (direct to VGA in or thru a VGA to DVI adaptor) and so far thru either input I only get a black screen with "No Signal - VGA Input" or "No Signal - DVI Input" displayed, so then I go back to the old monitor, try another resolution/refresh rate and try the TV again. This can't be the best way to do this - plus I'm out of resolution options.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Go to System Preferences>Displays. Change the settings to your desire.
