Wait in Asynchronous Function Module

Hello,
We are creating calling Asynchronous function module in the Delivery User Exist to create Invoice. Invoice creation needs to wait until delivery change is commited. For this purpose, we have placed ENQUEUE_SLEEP FM in the asynchronous FM with a wait time of 1 second. We have written a logic in such a way that ENQUEUE_SLEEP is called in a loop causing a delay of one second until delivery can be locked successfully.
But we cant let it wait for one second. Delivery should be locked as soon as delivery is committed in the main program. How can we achieve this in asynchronously called FM.
Thanks

Bear in mind that asynch RFC(aRFC) & RFC as BACKGROUND TASK(transactional RFC or tRFC) are completely different. While the former is generally used for parallel processing, the latter is used to maintain the "atomicity" of an SAP LUW.
tRFC calls are registered in special DB tables(ARFCSSTATE & ARFCSDATA) & are executed once the COMMIT WORK statement is executed in the particular LUW.

• Commit for Asynchronous Function Module

Halo Experts,
I am working on an Perfomance Optimization project . I am trying to optimize the program by scehduling the individual methods inside the program via asynchronous function modules . By this way I can run this independent methods parallely ( and not sequentailly) . for eg
if the program has
me->m1( ).
me->m2( ).
me->m3( )
if m2 and m3 are independent of each other I schedule them parallely by
me->run_m2_m3_parallely(  ) see the below code
CALL FUNCTION 'ZM2'
        STARTING NEW TASK 'FUNC1'
        DESTINATION 'NONE'
        CALLING ZCLASS=>set_flag_4_m2 ON END OF TASK.
CALL FUNCTION 'ZM3'
        STARTING NEW TASK 'FUNC2'
        DESTINATION 'NONE'
        CALLING ZCLASS=>set_flag_4_m3 ON END OF TASK.
      WAIT UNTIL l_m2_flag = 'X' AND
                 l_m3_flag = 'X'.
the FMs ZM2 and ZM3 are updating Z Database tables( say ZM2  and  ZM3 ) . Do I need an explicit commit work for Individual FMs or a single commit work for both the FMs.
How can I roll back both the updates to the database if a dump occurs ?
How should the commit work statement be in this case ?
Regards
Arshad

I think you can solve your issue by using the KEEPING TASK addition.
In your ZCLASS=>set_flag_4_m2 method try this:
METHOD set_flag_4_m2.
      RECEIVE RESULTS FROM FUNCTION 'ZM2 ' KEEPING TASK.
ENDMETHOD.
METHOD set_flag_4_m3.
      RECEIVE RESULTS FROM FUNCTION 'ZM3 ' KEEPING TASK.
ENDMETHOD.
And after your wait you can try to do this:
WAIT UNTIL l_m2_flag = 'X' AND
                 l_m3_flag = 'X'.
* In set_func2_commited you must receive results from BAPI_tRANSACTION_COMMIT and set global flag g_func2_commit
CALL FUNCTION 'BAPI_TRANSACTION_COMMIT'
        STARTING NEW TASK 'FUNC2'
        DESTINATION 'NONE'
        CALLING ZCLASS=>set_func2_commited ON END OF TASK.
* In set_func3_commited you must receive results from BAPI_tRANSACTION_COMMIT and set global flag g_func3_commit
CALL FUNCTION 'BAPI_TRANSACTION_COMMIT'
        STARTING NEW TASK 'FUNC3'
        DESTINATION 'NONE'
        CALLING ZCLASS=>set_func3_commited ON END OF TASK.
WAIT UNTIL g_func3_commit EQ 'X' and g_func2_commit EQ 'X'.

• Asynchronous function module - why RFC ?

Hi,
I am using CALL FUNCTION ... STARTING NEW TASK ... DESTINATION 'NONE' to start an asynchronous process.
For this to work, the called function module must be unfortunately RFC enabled.
Actually I do not want that anybody external can call this. Can I find out, if I was called from "outside"? Otherwise I create a potential security hole?
Regards,
Bruno

A sound security concept is the cure for many problems.
In this special case it is much easier said than done...  ;-(
STARTING NEW TASK automatically uses DESTINATION 'NONE' even if you do not code the destination extention, therefore the FM must be RFC-enabled.
FM RFC_WITHIN_SAME_SYSTEM checks that the caller is within the same SID, which is what the internal destination NONE is.
To use security for this you must consider that internal destinations do not check object S_RFC by default. But real external callers will encounter the check. This means that to use authorizations based security you must have all your users (everything from end users to the RFC connections users into this system) as having explicit and restircted RFC authorizations which also do not include the function group which this FM belongs to.
Additionally the field is 40 char long (as are the object names) but the authority-check statement truncates the function group name at the 15th character as it can only deal with 16 char.
An finally, anyone who does not know the object is very likely to pop a * value into it when it turns up, and it will ...
In this case I also think that FM RFC_WITHIN_SAME_SYSTEM is the more reliable solution. After all, SAP also use it for exactly this purpose.
Cheers,
Julius

• Remote function module to wait untill the response came from webmethods

hi all.
here i have got a situation that the remote function module created in SAP-R/3 to wait untill the response came from webmethods :
i have created the remote function module by assigning one structure in tables(tab) and 3 parameters in changing tab just to collect the messages return from webmethods
so this rfc will be called by webmethods and pick the structure data and then it wll return 3 variables back to rfc.
here the rfc need to wait untill the response came from webmethods.
so can any body suggest me on what source code do i need to write in RFC

Hi Naina,
Normally RFC are synchronous, they do have return parameter as export parameter.
If return parameter is missing then , you can create Wrapper RFC.
Wrapper RFC:
It is nothing but you just  create BAPI in SE37 transaction with Return parameter as export parameter and make it remote enabled by clicking on Radio button.
Under source code, CALL BAPI which XI has to call.
Thats it!
I hope this helps.
Let me know if any help required.

• Remote Function module to wait for the response.

Hi .
i just created the remote function module to call the webmethod by putting the parameters in tables (tab) for webmethods to pick the data from RFC and parameters in changing (tab) to collect the reponse from webmethods ,i just want to know if this is the right way of creating the RFC for webmethods and the RFC need to wait for certain time until it should get the response from webmethods.
can any body guide me in this on how i can make the rfc to wait untill it will get the response from webmethods.
waiting for your response.

• Function Module to Pause / Wait write statement

Hello Everyone !
Write 'ABC'.
Write 'XYZ'.
In between this statement I want a pause.
ABC should be displayed and after few seconds XYZ should be displayed.
Which function module can be used for this ???

Hi Vaibhav,
The output screen's are passive in nature and cannot be refreshed, if your intention is to update the user with a message or something, you could use the status bar and issue the messages to the user, or use the FM SAPGUI_PROGRESS_INDICATOR below is a code snippet using the same.
CALL FUNCTION 'SAPGUI_PROGRESS_INDICATOR'
EXPORTING
*   PERCENTAGE       = 0
       text             = 'Hi.........'
WAIT UP TO 5 SECONDS.
CALL FUNCTION 'SAPGUI_PROGRESS_INDICATOR'
EXPORTING
*   PERCENTAGE       = 0
       text             = 'Hi22222.......'
WAIT UP TO 5 SECONDS.

• How to take back the control from RFC function module to calling program

Hi,
In our system landscape, more than 200 child systems are connected to Solution manager(SMP). I have copied a RFC enabled function module into all the child systems and calling that FM from Sol Man in sychronous mode.
Here goes my code in SolMan.
LOOP AT it_dest INTO wa_dest.
      CALL FUNCTION 'Z_GET_LOGIN_DETAILS' DESTINATION wa_dest-rfcdest
        EXPORTING
          date_fr               = s_date-low
          date_to               = s_date-high
        TABLES
          tab_data              = it_val
        EXCEPTIONS
          communication_failure = 1
          system_failure        = 2
          OTHERS                = 3.
      IF sy-subrc EQ 0.
*     Updates zuserlogon
          MODIFY zt_logon_det FROM TABLE it_val.
          COMMIT WORK.
          WRITE:/'RFC for Destination', wa_dest-rfcdest, 'succesfully updated.'.
      ELSE.
          WRITE:/'RFC for Destination', wa_dest-rfcdest, ' failed.'.
      ENDIF.
ENDLOOP.
Few child systems are very slow & takes more than 20 minutes(Many of the times system hangs) to return the result. But I should not wait for so long. Even if the child system doesn't return any values in 5 minutes I shoud continue with other system ignoring the current one.
I tried calling the FM in asynchronous mode(STARTING NEW TASK) but no success because only 6 DIA processes possible but as I said I have more than 200 systems connected to SolMan.
Please help me resolving this problem.
Thanks,
Prathap

If there are only few child systems with bad response time, use asynchronous call using a CALL FUNCTION func STARTING NEW TASK task DESTINATION dest PERFORMING subr or CALLING meth ON END OF TASK. Count asynchronous calls still running/waiting (increment a counter when creating a task (not the one used for task id). In the form/method performed at end of a call decrement the counter. When counter is lower than a limit, 4-5 if 6 processes (*), perform an asynchronous call else perform a synchronous call or wait until the counter falls below the limit.
Regards,
Raymond
(*) Use SPBT_INITIALIZE at start of program to get actual number of free/available processes.

• RFC function module - to have it as time dependent

Hi,
I have a RFC call to CRM system from R/3 side.  This call is made to get email address of users in CRM system - during the triggering of order confirmation output.
Some times the RFC queue is full and these calls also get in to the queue blocking the queue.  This call for me it is an optional and it should not get struck in the queue meaning the order output process should not wait for longer time.
Is there a way that I can say if the call is taking longer time say over 60 seconds no need to wait for the CRM data.  Is there any option in the function module to do so (something similar to "starting new task", "performing <a routine> on end of task").
Thanks in advance...
Krish

Thanks for your responses.
May I know where I can set the timeout in SM59?  If it is a common setting for all RFC connections, then I cannot touch since the regular calls to CRM/ other systems shouldn't get affected.  If it is specific to the RFC connection then I can create a new one and use it over here with time out setting.
Asynchronous RFC I can try but this call to CRM system is made from the output routine - so I am not sure how we can use it over here.  The output routine checks if any valid email address found in CRM system for the customer.  If so then it sets sy-subrc = 0.  Since this routine is called during the order creation the wait causes delay in order getting saved.  This happens occasionally when the CRM queue is fully occupied.
Thanks,

• Call function module in update task

Hi
I am using the follwoing logic in my prog
CALL FUNCTION 'Z_Update _Task'    In update task
      EXPORTING
        t_vbak        =  t_vbak.
But the program goes to dump at call function
Please let me know if the syntax i am using is correct.

It might be the type conflict . Please check once .
Here am giving some information abt UPDATE TASK.
Why do we use this " In Update Task " ??
The main update technique for bundling database changes in a single
database LUW is to use CALL FUNCTION... IN UPDATE TASK.
How do we Use ??
A typical R/3 installation contains dialog work processes and at least one update work process. The update work processes are responsible for updating the database. When an ABAP program reaches a COMMIT WORK statement, any function modules from CALL FUNCTION... IN UPDATE TASK statements are released for processing in an update work process. The dialog process does not wait for the update to finish. This kind of update is called asynchronous update.
What is the Use... ??
Asynchronous update is useful when response time from the transaction is critical, and the database updates themselves are so complex that they justify the extra system load

hi,
Why do we use this " In Update Task " ??
The main update technique for bundling database changes in a single database LUW is to use CALL FUNCTION...
Real time scenario.
Suppose a user wants to change an entry in a database table, or add a new one. He or she enters the necessary data, and then starts the update process by choosing Save. This starts the following procedure in the ABAP program:
Firstly, the program locks the database entry against other users, using the enqueue work process (or the message server in the case of a distributed system). This generates an entry in the lock table. The user is informed whether the update was successful, or whether the lock could not be set because of other users.
If the lock is set, the program reads the entry that is to be changed and modifies it. If the user has created a new entry, the program checks whether a record with the same key values already exists.
In the current dialog work process, the program calls a function module using CALL FUNCTION... IN UPDATE TASK, and this writes the change details as an entry in table VBLOG.
When the program is finished (maybe after further dialog steps), a COMMIT WORK statement starts the final part of the SAP LUW. The work process that is processing the current dialog step starts an update work process.
Based on the information passed to it from the dialog work process, the update work process reads the log entries belonging to the SAP LUW from table VBLOG.
The update work process passes this data to the database for updating, and analyzes the return message from the database. If the update was successful, the update work process triggers a database commit after the last database change and deletes the log entries from table VBLOG.
If an error occurred, the update work process triggers a database rollback, leaves the log entries in table VBLOG, flags them as containing errors, and sends a SAPoffice message to the user, who should then inform the system administrator.
The corresponding entries in the lock table are reset by the update work process.
Hope this is helpful, Do reward.

• Function module for calculating sigma balance

Is there  any function module available in SAP for calculating sigma balance.
Thanks

APPL_LOG_DISPLAY     With this function module you can analyze logs in the database.
APPL_LOG_DISPLAY_INTERN     With this function module you can analyze logs in local memory, e.g. when you have only collected log records at runtime and do not want to write to the database.
APPL_LOG_INIT     This function module checks whether the specified object or sub-object exists and deletes all existing associated data in local memory.
APPL_LOG_READ_DB     With this function module you read the log data in the database for an object or sub-object according to specified selection conditions.
APPL_LOG_READ_INTERN     With this function module you read all log data whose log class has at least the specified value, from local memory, for the specified object or sub-object.
APPL_LOG_SET_OBJECT     With this function module, you create a new object or sub-object for writing in local memory. With a flag you can control whether the APPL_LOG_WRITE_... messages are written in local memory or are output on the screen.
APPL_LOG_WRITE_DB     With this function module you write all data for the specified object or sub-object in local memory to the database. If the log for the object or sub-object in question is new, the log number is returned to the calling program.
APPL_LOG_WRITE_HEADER     With this function module, you write the log header data in local memory.
APPL_LOG_WRITE_LOG_PARAMETERS     With this function module, you write the name of the log parameters and the associated values for the specified object or sub-object in local memory. If this function module is called repeatedly for the same object or sub-object, the existing parameters are updated accordingly. If you do not specify an object or sub-object with the call, the most recently used is assumed.
APPL_LOG_WRITE_MESSAGE_PARAMS     With this function module you write a single message, with parameters, in local memory. Otherwise the function module works like APPL_LOG_WRITE_SINGLE_MESSAGE.
APPL_LOG_WRITE_MESSAGES     With this function module you write one or more messages, without parameters, in local memory.
APPL_LOG_WRITE_SINGLE_MESSAGE     With this function module you write a single message, without parameters, in local memory. If no header entry has yet been written for the object or sub-object, it is created. If you do not specify an object or sub-object with the call, the most recently used is assumed.

• ABAP Dump when calling Function Module Starting New Task

Hi all. I have a tricky situation now, I am doing a POC on parallel processing.
I am getting an ABAP dump on the following Call Function line which is in class lcl_steer_114numc (See below for full program):
METHOD start.
        CALL FUNCTION 'Z_ZZCLS_STEER_114NUMC'
          STARTING NEW TASK me->id
          CALLING me->finish ON END OF TASK.
      ENDMETHOD.                    "start
However I get the following ABAP dump:
Short text
        Statement "CALL FUNCTION .. DESTINATION/STARTING NEW TASK/IN BACKGROUND TASK"
The function module only contains a wait statement to simulate parallel processing. It is strange that it dumps here, because when I change the FM call to another call that has been triggered successfully from other classes, it still produces the same ABAP dump.
The background of the Proof Of Concept is to see if I can get an event to trigger the next process that depends on the outcome of the previous process. Parallel processes are run in the start methods by calling RFC.
<Garbled code removed>

Well, the thing is I did manage to run 3 other Function Modules asynchronously succeesfully prior to that function call, with the same exact function call syntax. Further more, I have tried editing it with your suggestion but I get the exact same dump.
The complete function group can be downloaded here (slinkee file):
https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B3sua1Bw4XK4ZmFhNzcwMTgtYzQ0Mi00NzQ4LTg5YTMtNDNlNWUxYTM2NTg3&hl=en_US
The complete program can be downloaded here (slinkee file):
https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B3sua1Bw4XK4YWJmNjU3ODYtODRmMy00Nzg2LThkNTUtZjNkNDRhZGQ3MTUw&hl=en_US
The complete ST22 dump can be found here:
https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B3sua1Bw4XK4ZDU1YmFkZDAtOTU5MS00ZTgwLWFlZTktNWZhMDUxMzJlZWNl&hl=en_US
Basically I ST22 gives me the following:
Runtime Errors         RPERF_ILLEGAL_STATEMENT
Date and Time          17.07.2011 05:29:54
Short text
    Statement "CALL FUNCTION .. DESTINATION/STARTING NEW TASK/IN BACKGROUND TASK"
What happened?
    Error in the ABAP Application Program

    The current ABAP program "Z_ZZB1_CLOSE_PERIOD_TEST2" had to be terminated
     because it has
    come across a statement that unfortunately cannot be executed.
And it explains it here (but is not helpful / relevant at all) as I ran the program from SE38.
Error analysis
    There is probably an error in the program
    "Z_ZZB1_CLOSE_PERIOD_TEST2".
    The program was probably called in a conversion exit
    or in a field exit. These are implemented by
    function modules called CONVERSION_EXIT_xxxxx_INPUT/OUTPUT or
    USER_EXIT_xxxxx_INPUT.
    Conversion exits are triggered during screen field transports or
    WRITE statements, field exits during field transports from the
    screen to the ABAP/4 program.
    In this connection, the following ABAP/4 statements are not allowed:

I hope you try to download the slinkee files and you will notice the call function I performed was no different than the other call function RFC calls that really are working.

• Alv's using function modules

APPL_LOG_DELETE     With this function module you delete logs in the database according to specified selection conditions
If the log for the object or sub-object in question is new, the log number is returned to the calling program.

data:
        begin of t_values occurs 2,
          value like kna1-begru,
        end of t_values,
        t_return like ddshretval occurs 0 with header line.
      t_values = 'PAR*'.
      append t_values.
      t_values = 'UGG'.
      append t_values.
      call function 'F4IF_INT_TABLE_VALUE_REQUEST'
           exporting
                retfield        = 'BEGRU'
                value_org       = 'S'
           tables

                others          = 3.
      if sy-subrc = 0.
        read table t_return index 1.
        o_begru-low = t_return-fieldval.
        if o_begru-low = 'PAR*'.
          o_begru-option = 'CP'.
        else.
          o_begru-option = 'EQ'.
        endif.
        o_begru-sign = 'I'.
        append o_begru to s_begru.
      else.
        o_begru = i_begru.
      endif.
F4IF_SHLP_EXIT_EXAMPLE     documents the different reasons to use a search help exit, and shows how it is done.
F4IP_INT_TABLE_VALUE_REQUEST     This function does not exist in 4.6 and above. Use F4IF_INT_TABLE_VALUE_REQUEST instead.
FILENAME_GET     popup to get a filename from a user, returns blank filename if user selects cancel
FORMAT_MESSAGE     Takes a message id and number, and puts it into a variable. Works better than WRITE_MESSAGE, since some messages use $ as a place holder, and WRITE_MESSAGE does not accommodate that, it only replaces the ampersands (&) in the message.
FTP_COMMAND     Execute a command on the FTP server
FTP_CONNECT     Open a connection (and log in) to an FTP server
FTP_DISCONNECT     Close the connection (and log off) the FTP server

Current restrictions: You cannot display long texts. You cannot display sub-items. You cannot display classification data of BOM items for batches. You can only display one alternative or variant. You cannot enter an alternative for module CSAP_MAT_BOM_READ, so you always see alternative 01. The following example came from a posting on the SAP-R3-L mailing list.
Example:
data: begin of tstk2 occurs 0.
              include structure stko_api02.
data: end of tstk2.

             include structure csdep_order.
data: end of tdep_order.
data: begin of tdep_doc occurs 0.
             include structure csdep_doc.
data: end of tdep_doc.
data: flg_warning like capiflag-flwarning.
       call function 'CSAP_MAT_BOM_READ'
            exporting
                 material   = 'MAT100'
                 plant      = '0001'
                 bom_usage  = '1'
