Wait or buy?

No harm wondering out loud, and 7 yrs on Mac Pro.
I would plan on 6-core, somethikng more than the 5870 probably (but you woudl get it with 5770 and have to upgrade on your own, no BTOs), and definitely 24GB+ RAM (but buy minimum from Apple of course).
Adding a PCIe Sonnet Tempo Pro SSD controller $300 gives you 6G bootable and you add your own (say 2 x Samsung 840 Pro 240GB, one for system, 2nd for scratch, or use a 2nd such controller for scratch).
Need CUDA? maybe GTX 7xx rather than the GTX 680 Mac Edition from EVGA ($599).
A 6-core or 8-core 3.6GHz would be nice to match or surpass high end iMac and Thunderbolt.
Nuking a thread just for asking for advice was a shame to see it deleted folks.

Someone can ask to and some are fussy as to what is speculation or the "TOS" while others allow discussions. And with the Mac Pro being the same now basically for 3 yrs there are lots just LOTS of people asking.
That said, no one knows if or when or what - I always suggest "read" and see what Intel has up their sleeves and what the Xeon timeline - Intel generally does have a 'roadmap' and lets the world know so that the OEMs and others can PLAN.
The presence of drivers for newer graphic cards in 10.8.3 is good. A year ago Nvidia and Intel were really late and struggling with new products, drivers. Even USB3 chips that Intel plans to use in Haswell will be late.
I recently spent a week with a new i5 3570 3.5GHz PC and was impressed how much such a lowly 4-core processor was able to do, along with its SATA3 and PCIe 3.x - and cheaply too. But I don't like the direction Windows 8 has taken and I'd rather have it on a Mac (but I want a 3.4GHz range processor, not a mini, and not the price tag of the iMac that my brother bought).

  • Wait or buy, help please :)

So i decided to buy a MacBook Pro 13 Inch with i7.. But after i saw all these posts about various issues I made this post to ask if i should wait with buying MBP, Any tips/ideas?
    Thanks alot!

Visiting these forums is like visiting a hospital and then trying to evaluate the overall health of a nation. Obviously that cannot be done. Most of the millions of users that are using their computers with no problems never have a need to post and are completely silent. If you haven't purchased yet then buy with confidence and enjoy your machine, if you have already bought your MBP then continue to enjoy it.
Also I'm guessing you may be a recent Apple convert. If so then I'd also recommend bookmarking and going through the following web sites for Mac converts.

  • IPad mini 2 in January? I better wait before buying one...

With the rate of renewing that Apple does, I better wait before buying the iPad mini. Maybe the next one will already be in a couple of months!

Maybe it will, maybe it won't.
There is always something better on the horizon, no matter what product you buy, or who from.
If you are always waiting for the best, you'll never buy anything.

  • Should I wait to buy a new Macbook?

Should I wait to buy a a new Macbook until the Mountain Lion Software comes out?

I wouldn't wait - you are eligible to get Mountain Lion download free if you buy a new MacBook now, and it'll tkae Apple a few days (longer if not purchased directly from the Apple Store) to update the image. You aren't missing anything placing the order now.

  • Should I wait to buy a Macbook?

I have read so many great things about the Mac. I've read superb reviews from sites like Cnet and PCMag. Now that I looked into wireless networking with the Mac, I am thinking about waiting to buy one. I have read a few posts about crashes and kernels when running wireless on the Mac because of update 10.4.10. Has there been a patch for this problem? Also, I already have my wireless setup on my PC. I have a Linksys WRT54G router with a Motorola Surfboard SB5101. If I buy a Mac, would I have to reinstall the router software on it? Thanks for the help...

Like most things in life, it depends...
I bought a 1.83 GHz core2 duo Macbook in July 2007. For the most part, the Macbook is a very nicely designed and manufactured machine.
High points: nice keyboard, magsafe power connector, long battery life when running OSX, ability to run Windows XP or Vista natively, iLife software suite.
Low points: WiFi disconnects in OSX 10.4.10, lackluster LG/Philips LCD has a relatively narrow viewing angle and "only" 262,000 (18 bits) of color resolution. No PC-X or PCMCIA card slot.
I guess I'm biased because I bought a Macbook. I tend to run Vista on it more than OSX due to the WiFi issues in OSX (WiFi is OK in Vista). More importantly, I can run the current release of MS-Office in Vista. The Macbook is nice in that I can run either OS without 3rd party software or goofy emulators. I love tinkering with Garage Band in OSX for recreation. If you are planning to run Vista, upgrade to 2G of memory. The Macbook is nice for doing presentations, but you'll need a VGA or DVI pigtail adapter, each of which is a $20 accessory. Apple should've put a standard VGA socket on the Macbook, as VGA cords are the de facto video port in most every conference room.
The main reason you might want to delay purchase would be to have Leopard pre-installed or at least qualify for a low cost Leopard upgrade.

  • I'm running 10.6.8. Should I wait to buy Mountain Lion or buy 10.7 now? now?

I bought my MacBook Pro with 10.6.8 but it appears I need to buy the upgrade to 10.7 in order to use iCloud.  Can I upgrade to 10.7 for free? If not should I just wait to buy Mountain Lion this summer?

You cannot upgrade to Lion for free...the cost is low, though.  Only $30 (US).  That will get you more than just iCloud, there are other features as well.
Apple has announced some of the features of Mountain Lion on the website, are those features imporant to you?  If you can live without iCloud until ML is released, date of which has not been announced, then the decision to buy now or wait is up to you.  If you can make good use of iCloud now, then why wait?

  • Wait to buy an iPhone?

With the 3G phones coming out next year, should one wait to buy an iPhone? I don't want to buy an iPhone now if it is going to become obsolete in 3 months. Apart from the 3G feature, are there rumors of anything else outstanding that justifies waiting until the new phone is released. Is EDGE really too slow to do anything useful with?
    thank you!

I can do wireless sync with my contacts and mail, why do I need to plug it in only for my calendar?
How are you able to do this with an iPhone - wireless sync with contacts?
And mail is not synced wirelessly. The iPhone's email client supports industry standard IMAP and POP accounts which are accessed via a Wi-Fi network or via AT&T's EDGE network no different from what a computer does or can do. Many call accessing a POP account as syncing with their account which is not accurate and all server stored mailboxes for an IMAP account are synced automatically with the email client used so nothing special here.
A .Mac account can be accessed as an IMAP or POP account.
Unfortunately, in many aspects its like dating a chick who is hot, really hot, but doesn't have a whole lot else to offer.
To each his/her own in this regard but I don't think or feel the same way for if I did, I would not have spent this kind of money. It either meets my needs or it doesn't and if it didn't or I felt this way about it or had some long laundry list of missing features that I want or need as is posted here often, there is not a change in heck I would have purchased one plain and simple.

  • We live in USA and wish to purchase a Macbook Pro computer for our foreign exchange daughter, who has returned to Guatemala.  is it better to buy it here and hand carry or wait and buy it there?  we want to get her warranty and repair benefits

we live in Californina and will be travelling to Guatemala City next month to attend our Foreign Exchange Daughters graduation.  We want to buy her a Macbook Pro as a gift and purchase the warranty/protection coverage for her.  We are concerned she will not be entitled to any Apple Support/warranty by it being purchased in USA but using it and living in Guatemala.
It is better to wait and buy it from a retailer there in Guatemala?

  • Waiting to buy MacMini as MediaCenter

I've still got my trusty ole Tivo from many years ago plugging away happily. But I would really, really like to buy a Mac Mini as my Media Center. I guess the only thing that has surprised me is that Apple doesn't seem to be supporting the natural push this direction.
    Things necessary:
    1. Hardware that supports multiple HDTV tuners, multiple NTSC tuners, and cablecard. This is a biggie, but it seems that any hardware manufacturer could do it if Apple provided an interface that allowed that kind of data transfer speed.
    2. Allowing plug-ins to Front-Row. I'm sure EyeTV would do a plug-in in an instant if FrontRow allowed it.
    3. Allow iTunes to draw content from other servers (so I can rip DVDs or download tunes in a different machine than the one that's doing the Tivo functions, since that's pretty dedicated).
That would replace every function my Tivo does today, and then some. But until it can replace my Tivo, it will remain a dream for all of us here...I know at least 4 people in my office who are all waiting on buying Macs for this specific combination of things. All have money set aside for it, but are waiting...
    Tubby

I can certainly understand those thoughts... I have been waiting for a Mac media center for awhile now, but since it hadn't yet materialized, I went ahead and got the mini because it was such a great deal.
With the mini not being able to have anything internal for the tuner (my G5 has an Alchemy TV card and software that work well) I use a Formac currently to bring the signal over and capture as needed to the mini. I am looking into some of the new Elgato options since they also allow for zero latency game play, which is going to be key if I replace my TV with an LCD and be able to drop my switch boxes.
As for compressing and sharing, I do most of that work on my G5 and then load it into iTunes there and then use front row as it will find your shared iTunes libraries. I will admit I have had issues with the streaming portion since the FR 1.2.2 update, but to get around that I still do the work on my G5 and then use Apple Remote Desktop to move it to the media library drive attached to the mini.
I have been slowly converting every DVD in the house and am absolutely loving the remote, never going for a DVD and finally catching up on the backlog of Anime in the to watch pile!
I, also hope for a fully media equipped machine in a mini footprint in the future, but until then, this setup has been a welcomed addition.

  • Should I wait to buy an iSight?

So I really want to buy an iSight for my new mini and 23 in. apple cinema display. But from what i understand the current models are from 2004....Are these going to be updated any time soon with newer models? I'd hate to buy something at the end of it's product life... Does anybody have any recommendations as to what i should do?

    Hello Talkshowhost,
No one here knows about future Apple plans / products. If anyone here did know they would NEVER say anything.
Speculation about future Apple products is not allowed here.
If you want an iSight - Buy one. Waiting for the next update / upgrade is a very bad idea IMHO. If we all did that, we would all still be riding a horse to work.
    Regards
    Ian.

  • Should I wait to buy AEBS?

I want to upgrade my network by replacing my 802.11b WAP with an AEBS. I would first want to connect a printer to the USB port to share, but then I would want to connect a USB drive (with a USB hub) to have a shared drive on the network and to use with Time Machine
    1) I'm guessing the shared USB printer would work fine?
    2) In the forum I hear a lot of problems with using Time Machine with AEBS. If Apple can fix this (and I have to believe they want to) would the fix for me entail buying a new AEBS that has the fix, or is it likely to come from some fix in either the OS (I'm using Leopard), or an update to the sw running on the AEBS. If it requires upgrading the AEBS, I will just wait until it is fixed.
    Thank you

cleveralias, Welcome to the discussion area!
...would the fix for me entail buying a new AEBS that has the fix, or is it likely to come from some fix in either the OS (I'm using Leopard), or an update to the sw running on the AEBS.
As you know from reading the "Help & Terms of Use" this is a user-to-user discussion area... so we have no idea what it takes to make that happen.
Therefore you will have to decide if you want to wait for Apple to support it or not.

  • Should I wait to buy an iPhone or buy one now?

First off, I know for a fact that I am going to get an iPhone, but I just can't decide if I want to buy one now or wait for iPhone 2.0. The main reason for my hesitancy is the lack of 3G. All of iPhone's other missing features don't really concern me because they can be fixed through software updates. If Apple is going to release a 3G iPhone within the next 6 months or so then I might want to wait, but if it's going to be a year or more, then I'll probably just buy one now and suck it up with EDGE. Does anyone have any thoughts or ideas to when Apple might be planning to release a 3G iPhone? Any ideas that would help me make this decision would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot.

Maybe you should get yer wife a V2 and keep the V1.
Are you saying he should get a new wife just to upgrade his iPhone? Or get a new wife for his existing wife? Depending on how much he likes his current wife, it may be simpler (and cheaper, frankly), simply to upgrade the phone and not the wife.

  • Should I wait to buy? (Antennagate)

    Hello,
I have been considering this for a while and I finally decided I want to buy an iphone. The problem is that I don't know if I should wait for apple to physically fix the antenna problem or just buy it now. I know that if I where to buy it today and Apple were to release the iphone 4b shortly after then I'd be pretty ticked off.
I know you guys probably know as much as me on this situation but should I buy the iphone 4 now or wait another month to see if a fixed version comes out.

There is no "Antennagate", to worry about. I have several iPhone 4 both for business and pleasure. Several family members and friends here in Canada also have the iPhone 4 and none of them report any "antennagate" issue. If you can hold your hand over the iPhone and cause it to drop from 5 bars to no bars then it's defective and should be swapped. If though you experience what every cellphone user experiences by watching it drop one bar from what every you're seeing before holding it then that's normal. The only true reception complaints seem to come from AT&T users in the USA due to living in already known bad reception areas or in Canada those on either Bell, Telus or Virgin Mobile due to none of the three networks provide backwards support for EDGE. So when the user goes into a none 3G area the iPhone data won't function. My family, friends and myself are all on Rogers HSPA+ network in Canada which supports EDGE when in fringe areas. I have a far better experience with the iPhone 4 than I had with my previous iPhones and other smartphones such as Blackberry.

  • Should I wait to buy ZEN Micro Ph

I am getting a part-time job soon and want to buy the ZEN Micro, but the ZEN Micro Photo is coming out in Summer 2005, and that looks good, so should I get the ZEN Micro or wait for the Colour screen version?
P.S I had my Muvo TX 256MB for 3 weeks and is great, though I should have waited and got the 52MB version it is only 70GBP at eBuyer now.

I was in the same situation as you, wanting a Zen Micro but wondered if I should wait till the Zen Micro Photo came out. I decided that I didn't need the colour screen to show people photos and just wanted a small portable music player so I went with a Black Zen Micro and I am very happy that I did

  • Should I wait to buy an ipod or just say forget it and do it.

I'm currently running a powerbook, and I want to buy an ipod..but I'd be using the ipod on windows as well.
Should I just say forget it, and wait until I decide on one machine or the other, or should I buy it anyways?
This is my first ipod I'd be buying myself so I'm not sure what to do.

Format the iPod on your Windows machine and set it up to Manually manage your music and you can use it on both machines. You will have to manually drag music from your libraries to the iPod and any software updates will need to be done on the Windows machine. Your Powerbook can read a Windows formatted iPod, but you need to be using iTunes 8.0.2 on each machine. You will also have to manually eject the iPod when you are through adding music.
