Waiting for FiOS Availability is Becoming Ridiculous

My name is Nick.  Ever since you started advertising FiOS, I have been awaiting its arrival in my area (my zip code is in VA, 23434).  I live in a residential area, but it is not rural.  We currently only have Charter cable here and DirecTV.  Both of these services are terrible, but especially Charter cable.  I would say that my opinion of that company right now is borderline hatred due to poor customer service.   I would like an answer to the following questions: Why is there no product availability map online?  AT&T has one for their UVerse product.  I find it suspect that you say in your online forum that you do not have a similar function for FiOS.   Why are you being secretive about the availability of a new product?  FiOS has been offered for over 2 years now.  Is the availability in my area being delayed due to agreements with other carriers that create regional monopolies?  If not, when will the product be available here and why is it taking so long?  I would like to remain with Verizon due to positive service experiences in the past.  However, if AT&T arrives in the area first I will be forced to take my business (and the rest of my family's business) to your competition.
Sincerely,
Nick

See if FiOS TV is available in your area.

I think you might be in trouble.  I just found this post from a while back using the search feature.

Suffolk will never get Fios.  Not until folks get angry enough to Petition/Sue City of Suffolk to break their contract with the Charter monopoly.  I've been looking for that band wagon to hop on to no avail.  I even hoped Cox would turn up since people 2 blocks from me have it.  I'd jump on that in a minute just to have good fast internet.
I've lived in Suffolk since 1997 and had the lowest speed DSL this whole time until they offered my first upgrade last year to the Enhanced package.  It is the same speed I had before only it has the ability to scale higher.  It just never does so it still takes me 3 to 4 days to download anything.  Still better than Charter since at least it runs 24/7.  Thank you City of Suffolk.
And I found this news article
Verizon finishes digital-TV network - without Norfolk, Suffolk
By Carolyn Shapiro

Verizon Communications Inc. has finished building the fiber-optic network in Hampton Roads that allows customers to receive top-speed Internet and digital television service.
Verizon has franchise agreements with seven local municipalities - Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Virginia Beach, Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson and York County - that allow it to offer its Fios TV service to residents in neighborhoods where Verizon has built the network.
Fios services are available to 250,000 households in this region. That's about 40 percent of all households in the metropolitan area, according to the 2008 American Community Survey, which compiles basic demographic data annually for the U.S. Census Bureau.
Verizon will continue to deploy fiber-optic cables to some additional homes in coming months, mostly expanding within neighborhoods where it already has service, said Harry Mitchell, a company spokesman. So, a few more local TV viewers will have a chance to get Fios, the most comparable competitor to cable services from companies such as Cox Communications Inc., the dominant cable provider in Hampton Roads.
"You'll continue to see our crews out," Mitchell said.
Verizon has no plans, however, to seek franchise agreements with additional cities, Mitchell said. That means consumers in Norfolk and Suffolk won't have the Fios TV option in the near future.
That frustrates W. Randy Wright, a Norfolk councilman who lives in Bay Breeze Point, one of the few Norfolk developments where Verizon has strung fiber. He can get Fios Internet service but not Fios TV until Verizon has a franchise with the city.
"People would like to have the option," he said.
Verizon has had discussions with city attorneys but wouldn't agree to the same terms the city has under its Cox franchise, Wright said. Under state law, a city cannot grant one provider more favorable terms than it allows another.
A franchise grants a TV service provider access to a municipality's rights of way. In exchange, the company typically pays fees and provides benefits such as public and government access channels and programs for schools.
"They pay us a lot of money in the course of a year," Wright said of Cox, estimating that company provides "several million" dollars annually.
In seeking Fios franchises, Verizon considers the potential for gaining customers and the cost and difficulty of providing service, Mitchell said. The company chose "places that made the most sense from a network standpoint, from a market standpoint."
Since beginning the Fios project in 2004, Verizon has spent almost $23 billion, Mitchell said. As of the end of 2009, the company linked 15.4 million homes to fiber and has franchise agreements in more than 1,300 municipalities nationwide. Now, he said, the telecommunications giant shifts its focus from building the network to marketing Fios services to customers who can receive them, he said.
Most of Verizon's local franchises require the company to serve a certain number of homes within a certain time. In Chesapeake, Portsmouth and Virginia Beach, the company must reach all customers in its "initial service area" within three years of the franchise date.
Verizon decides the "initial service area." In Portsmouth, for example, that area includes about seven neighborhoods in the Churchland and Hodges Ferry areas.
"We reviewed it to make sure it was reasonable," Ronald Hallman, Chesapeake's city attorney, said of Verizon's initial service area in that city. "It's high-density areas."
Within seven years of the franchise date, Virginia Beach and Chesapeake require Verizon to serve at least 65 percent of all households in their cities. Even then, however, Verizon must cover only those areas that have a specific density of homes - 25 "occupied dwelling units" within a linear mile in Chesapeake and 30 per mile in Virginia Beach.
Consumers in more rural areas might never receive its TV service.
In Hampton Roads, Virginia Beach signed the first of the region's franchises in March 2007. Virginia Beach officials who are familiar with the Verizon agreement were unavailable to confirm whether Verizon had satisfied the requirement to cover its initial service territory within three years.
Chesapeake and Portsmouth granted Verizon franchises in 2008.
Mitchell said Verizon has met its obligations so far and is hooking up additional homes where it still needs to reach the required numbers. "We are on or ahead of schedule in our initial service areas."
Still, many local residents will remain left out of Fios TV. When Verizon dug up the streets around Bay Point condominiums in Norfolk to lay fiber three years ago, William Albertolli hoped he and his neighbors would soon have an alternative to Cox, which provides service packages to the development under a bulk contract.
He was disappointed to learn that Verizon had no plans for Fios TV in the city, though he said he has no complaints about Cox's service.
"If they brought the TV, then we could have a competitive price," Albertolli said. "Right now, we have no choice."

  • "waiting for Color Laserjet 2550L to become available" when trying to print

I have been successfully printing to a Color Laserjet 2550L for over 4 years yet suddenly within the last 2 weeks each time I try to print I get this message from the printer window: "waiting for printer to become available"?  Oddly enough, if I power the printer off and then back on the printer usually (although not always) prints whatever has not been completed in the queue.  I have tried using different USB cables, deleted and then added this printer again ... not sure what else to try?
I was messing around with my network in trying to get another Color LJ to work but don't see how that could affect this printer since this one is running direct via USB and seems to be getting the info just not printing without the power down?  Any help is greatly appreciated!  Thanks

OK, that's strange.  Apple and HP list it as being supported by Snow Leopard here.
Can you run a self-test from the front of the printer?
Try downloading updated software from Apple here.

  • Still waiting for up to date to be shipped?

I was curious to whether or not any other people are still waiting for their Mac OS X Leopard "up to date" cd to be shipped. I ordered mine on the 23rd and it still hasn't even been prepared for shipment at this time. I have spoken to a customer service manager but the issue with my order escaped her. She was going to be contacting her supervisor to see if they could see what was going on. She said I should expect a call back tomorrow.
I am being patient about the wait as i figure supply is exceeding demand, but I know of two people who purchased the "up to date" upgrade in the days after mine, and their cd's have already shipped.
Has your "up to date" shipped or are you still waiting. When did you order the CD?

I have ordered mine on 16th Oct..on the website it says shipped on 25th but its not here yet..:(
I called Apple thrice. The tracking number they provided is no good as they have shipped it using regular mail. Once they said it is going to take 5 days to be here in canada. Then a crazy sales rep gave me few instructions how to install leopard instead of actually finding out what happened to my shipment. The third time they said there has been "some problems with some of the DVDs" so they cancelled the initial shipment and are waiting for the new disks to become available for shipment....whatever that means. He said he will get back to me via email in 1 hour....it has been 2 days already ! They have charged my credit card and the tracking site shows an invoice with all the number and stuff...Strange behavior from Apple...

  • Hp LaserJet P3015 printer "waiting for printer to become available" message

    Hello All,
I have searched through many message boards about this issue (some steaming back to as far as 2009) and I have yet to find a solution that has worked for me.
    Background of situation:
In my office we have a dozen iMacs and Networked hp LaserJet P3015 printers.  Most work perfectly fine with out issue.  We are currently running 10.8.4 OS.  There are a few issues that seem to be unique to users or types of iMacs.  1) Three brand new iMacs (the skinny ones that come without the CD drives) where showing a message prompting for the "printer operator group".  I have that setting turned off but reguardless I added the user accounts to the "printer operator group" as well as the "printer admin group".  After I did that the users started to recieve the message "waiting for printer to become avaible".  When this message appears it never printers (I left it for a 20 minute period to no avail).  I have tried a whole host of fixes with short term success but the issue keeps reoccuring.  Here is a list of fixes I have tried:
    What I have tried
    1) I plugged the iMac directly into the printer via USB cable to install the drivers locally
    2) I added the user to the printer operator group and the printer admin group
    3) I checked all settings on both the printer and computer
    4) I have removed and re-added the printer several ways (from the network and directly via UBS cable)
    5) I checked the Ethernet connection to the printer (all are fine) (also eliminated the need for it by directly plugging her in via USB cable)
    6) I have "power" shut down the printer
    7) I restarted the printer settings on the network to eliminate any lingering issues
    8) Made sure the software is up to date (which according to some message boards is what the problem is)
    9) I have replaced both the actual Computer and Printer (with another brand new iMac), while additionally creating a new user account to eliminate hardware and faulty user settings as the culprit, as well as plugged the printer directly into the computer and removed it from the network.
    10) I prayed to the IT gods
    Other Notes:
I did see a solution from a message board that said to delete all "hp_" files in system/library/extensions and then directly plug the printer into the computer to install the drivers that way (which he said worked) but the guys also said that if he ran software update then the issue would re-occur.  This seems to be counter productive as I like to keep all software up to date
    What I have noticed:
    - The issue seems to affect the newer iMacs in my office more then the older machines despite everyone running the same OS version
Thank you all so much in adavanced for your time reading my post.  The issue has been extremely frustrating for both me and the end users and I appreaciate any help that anyone can provide (even if its just pointing me in the direction of another message board)
    - Chris

You have not mentioned it but based on some of the things that you have said, I would assume that the Mac's are bound to a domain. So, for one of these Mac's, if you logged on locally and then created a print queue to the network printer, do you get the same message?

  • "waiting for modem to become available"

  • Waiting for printer to become available - OSX 10.8.4

Hi, I foolishly allowed the HP printer updates on my imac running Mountain Lion, 10.8.4.  I learned not to do that on Snow Leopard but suffered a lapse resulting in 'waiting for printer to become available' and when it is reset, it only prints every other page.
In Snow Leopard I could get rid of it by going into system - library and deleting HP; the status quo was restored.  I cannot seem to do that in Mountain Lion and its really a pain!
I've tried deleting and reloading the printer to no avail.  It's an HP 2550.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks

I don't think I did anything other than plugged the printer into the USB and more or less let it do its own thing, i.e. I selected it off the list and used the driver that was built into Snow Leopard - to be honest I didnt really think about it as it all just happily worked in the Apple fashion.
All was fine for some time until a standard Apple update included HP printer updates, which I installed but then found the issue that the printer would print one job but no more until powered down and back on, when again one job could be done and so on.  I found it referred to here and elseweher and it seemed a common problem that was cured by going into Library/extensions and deleting all HP files.  I then avoided updating the printers and if ever it did slip through, I could readily get rid of problem.
This is one of the discussions I looked up back then https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2649214?start=0&tstart=0 but there do seem to be plenty of others.
I upgraded to Mountain Lion three or four months ago and didnt need to do anything with printers as it just happily continued to work until a couple of weeks back when I inadvertently let the HP update slip through and found the printer 'waiting to become available' after each print job.  I then attempted the method I had used for Snow Leopard but found the system is different.
I have got into the printers folder and deleted the HP files as well as resetting the printers in printer preferences but every time I plug the printer back in it seems to find the updated driver from somewhere!  That then appears in the printers folder.
I'm afraid I don't know about the protocol etc., although I'm willing to give anything a try.
    Thanks again

  • Waiting for printer to become available

I'm on OS X 10.8.5, and have a USB printer: HP p4015dn.   It used to work fine to print.  All of a sudden, it shows "Waiting for printer to become available", forever, and will not print. I can successfully print to networked HP printers, but even though I've rebooted the machine, rebooted the printer several times, this one just won't print anymore. I tried creating a new queue to this printer and it pauses when it tries to connect as though it can't communicate with the printer. I've tried putting the USB cable into a different port. No good. Also, no idea if this is a coincidence or not, my Fax modem stopped working - won't send out faxes anymore.  What do I do to debug this?

Yep, did all that (including resetting the printing system). I can still add new Networked printers and print to them fine, but can't print to this one USB printer (but other computers can, if I move the USB cable). I went to the printer console log and I see

  • "waiting for printer to become available" on laserjet 4650

Since 10.6.5, I can't print to my color laserjet 4650. All I get is a "waiting for printer to become available" message. I've repaired permissions, removed and re-added the printer, I've reset the printing system and plugged the printing straight into the mac book. Nothing has worked.
    Any help very gratefully received.

I am experiencing the same issue with my HP 2550L. I can get a single job to print, but any subsequent jobs hold with the "Waiting for printer to become available" status.
The only solution I have found thus far is to shut the printer off and turn it back on prior to sending each job.
This issue JUST arose in 10.6.5 for me.

  • "Waiting for printer to become available" message

Each time I try to print to my Laserjet 1300, I see a message in the print queue stating, "Waiting for printer to become available."  It never processes.  I delete the job, try again but the same result.  Result is same for short plain text, PDF or .jpg files.  However, I can print a test page directly from the Laserjet 1300 printer.  Have rebooted computer and restarted printer with no effect.  Am able to successfully print to my backup HP Deskjet F4180.  Am using a MacBook Pro OS 10.6.6.  All software updates have been made.  Thoughts?

If you are using Snow Leopard and have HP software for pre-Snow Leopard (either from a CD not marked as compatible with 10.6 or you recently upgraded to Snow Leopard and had the HP software on your Mac before you upgraded - even if you did a standard uninstall of the old software or installed new software over the top of it) you must uninstall the software using the 'scrubber' option:
Go to Applications/Hewlett Packard/ click on HP Uninstaller
    Click on Continue
Highlight your device on the left pane
Hold the Ctrl, Opt and Cmd keys and click on Uninstall <<<< Scrubber Option
There will be a pop up that asks if you are sure you want to uninstall ALL hp software. (At this point, if you continue, any HP printers you have installed will need to be reinstalled)
Click Continue and let it finish
    Restart your Mac
    Now, run a Software Update.
    Finally, reset the printing system:
    - Sys Prefs, Print & Fax
    - Right (control) click in the rectangle listing your printers and select Reset Printing System.
WARNING - this will delete ALL of your printers!
    - Select the plus sign to re-add it. Look for the printer, select it and wait until the "Add" button becomes available. Click it.

Hum. Let's uninstall with the 'scrubber option' like this:
    1. Go to Applications/Hewlett Packard/ click on HP Uninstaller and click Continue
    2. Highlight your device on the left pane
    3. Hold the Ctrl, Opt and Cmd keys and click on Uninstall
    4. There will be a pop up that asks if you are sure you want to uninstall ALL hp software. (At this point, if you continue, any HP printers you have installed will need to be reinstalled)
    5. Click Continue and let it finish
Now, run a Software Update. This can be done by clicking the Apple in the top left of the screen then clicking Software Updates.
Next, let's reset the printing system:
Go to System Preferences > Print & Scan
    - Right (or control) click in the rectangle listing your printers and select Reset Printing System.
WARNING - this will delete ALL of your printers!
    - Select the plus sign to re-add a printer. Select the Default tab on the top of the window. Look for the printer, select it and wait until the "Add" button becomes available. Click it.
Let me know how this works for you.

  • "Waiting for printer to become available" LaserJet 3390 OSX 10.8.5

I have had my LaserJet 3390 for years and it has worked great.  I have a MacBook Air running OSX 10.8.5.  According the the documentation I've seen, I can't download a specific driver, but there is a set of HP drivers that gets installed and updated through the Mac's Software Update.  Occasionally, I see an HP printer driver update. After I installed the last one (I think it started soon after, but not just after) I started getting the "Waiting for printer to become available" message that never seems to clear.  I can't print a thing.  Very frustrating!
    I've tried:
    1) Repair disk permissions, delete the printer, reinstall the printer.  No dice.
    2) I've looked in Software Update to either reinstall the HP printer drivers or to install a previous version.  No dice--can't find it anywhere.
    Any advice?

I am really sorry, but to get your issue more exposure I would suggest posting it in the commercial forums since this is a commercial printer. You can do this at Printers - LaserJet.

I'm trying to print a .psd image from Photoshop CS5 using my Epson Photo Stylus 2400 printer.  Yesterday, I downloaded a suggested upgrade and it hasn't worked since then. I used Time Machine and replaced the Epson utility with the old one. I then get a message:
Waiting for printer to become available...
and nothing happens.  I need to be able to print!
    I'm using Snow Leopard 10.6.8

Try Reset Printing System feature and then install the printer using Apples instructions  from Mac Basics: Printing in OS X

  • Cups and "waiting for printer to become available"

    Hi all,
i have a problem with cups (i don't know since when),
when i try to print something i receive the message:
"waiting for printer to become available"
And i'm aware that this problem happens when you have usblp loaded. So first of all i checked if the usblp module is loaded and here the result:
    usblp 9311 0
    usbcore 119004 8 usblp,uvcvideo,uas,usb_storage,usbhid,ohci_hcd,ehci_hcd
But if i go to check the /etc/rc.conf file the MODULES line is:
    MODULES=(lib80211_crypt_tkip wl radeon vboxdrv vboxnetflt powernow-k8 cpufreq_ondemand !snd-pcm-oss !b43 !ssb !usblp)
And it seems that usblp module is not loaded.
    Now the question is:
    What's wrong?
I did something wrong? I forgot somethin?
    Thanks,
    Ivan

    Oddly enough...
I couldn't find usblp in my lsmod output but I was also getting this "cups waiting for printer". My file utility is version 5.18 and although I considered downgrading it, that just felt too much like thrashing about. (My printer is a USB HP LaserJet 1020)
In the end, I did something else that felt like almost as much thrashing about. I followed the "changes to module blacklisting" page with usblp, restarted cups and cycled power on the printer. Now it's working again. I wish I entirely new why.
I think what happened was the automatic power up of the printer (or of the computer) loaded usblp but the fooz file for LaserJet was unloading it so (a) I never saw it in the lsmod output and (b) it was in the system long enough to snarl things, followed by (c) if only it was blacklisted at the time that the system saw the printer it would not be there and not foul things up. Does that sound like a reasonable chain of events.
one more reason to resent (grumble, grumble, grr grr) systemd over the older (admittedly clunkier, more manual -- but more CONTROLLABLE!) initscripts. (Okay, I'm over 45)
    cheers...ank

  • Can't print on HP 3700..."waiting for printer to become available..."

I can't print on my HP 3700. I've disconnected all cables, re-booted and nothing. I tried to remove and re-add the printer from 'Print & Fax' in System Preferences. I send something to print (from any application) and then in the print queue says "waiting for printer to become available...". Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Restart the computer and restart the printer. If you continue to have the problem the follow the steps Apple outlines in Reset Printing System feature article.
