Waiting for iPhoto Library

When I launch iPhoto 9.1.1 I'm getting a dialog that says:
"Waiting for iPhoto Library
"iPhoto will open as soon as the iPhoto library is available
Time Machine might be backing it up."
But, I've never used Time Machine on this Mac and it is turned off in System Preferences.
What is this message trying to tell me?
How can I mark my album as ready to use?
Thank you for your time and attention.

Never mind.
I rebooted and all is well now.

can't open iphoto in airbook. Asking to upgrade then says must rebuild library then warning about missing files. When click rebuild all I get is continued- waiting for iphoto library- and, never rebuilds

-1.The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto.
Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process for very large libraries may take an hour or more to complete.
    2. iPhoto is unable to open this library.
The library has issues that require rebuilding to correct
    3. Warning
Would you like to rebuild the library "iPhoto Library"?
The library "iPhoto Library" is missing required database files and must be rebuilt before it can be opened.

  • I connected an external HD to Time Capsule to use for iPhoto library - can I include it in backup

OK - So my Macbook Pro's 200GB hard drive is cramping my style. I have a 500GB Time Capsule that I use for backups. I have a 1TB Western Digital external HD that I have no connected to the time capsule, and moved my iPhoto library to it.
I'm continuing backup up my Macbook Pro to the Time Capsule hard drive, but I'd like to include the data on the external hard drive.
i can't seem to figure out exactly how to include it. i plan on putting all my pictures and videos on that hard drive, and i'd rather leave it plugged in to the time capsule rather than plugging it in to my macbook every time i need it.
    Thoughts?
And - to add to that, can i access the iPhoto library remotely if i am travelling? I know i need to do the OS update to benefit from the cloud services, but i was hoping to figure this out first
    running OS X 10.6.8

Why is leaving it connected to the time capsule not recommended?
As LaPastenague previously mentioned, Time Machine cannot backup a network drive, so you have to use yet another application if you want to automate backups.
i just thought it would be nice to have it as "networked attached storage"
It's nice, but again, you have to add more actions to backup the attached drive.
iPhoto has its own requirements as far as libraries, etc. You really should post in the iPhoto support area to let the experts over there sort things out.

Everything is much simpler and more reliable when a drive is connected directly to a Mac, but it's up to you to decide what you want to do.

  • Can USB Drive connected to Airport be used for iPhoto library?

Hi. I have a large photo library that is organized in folders on an external drive that is connected to my Airport Extreme base station. Is it possible to leave the photos on the network drive and import them into iphoto without using up a ton of space on my Macbook Pro's internal drive?

    Kevin:
Also be aware that if you lose signal while working with the library the database file can be damaged and you'll lose all of your organizational effort that was put into the library. That's very important. So as a way to guard against that see the tip at the end of my signature.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • PC network drive OK for iPhoto Library?

I use my MacBookPro on my wife's home PC network. I would like to store my photos on an external drive on the network. Do I need to have an Apple-formatted disc on the network, or will the PC network drive be OK for my iPhoto Library?

    Jazz Mobile
Welcome to the Apple user discussion forums
It should be a Mac formated drive - iPhoto has problems with PC formated drives - and you do not want a PC mucking around in the iPhoto library - you will corrupt the library and lose things

  • Migration troubles for iPhoto Library from MacBook Air to new iMac

I am having difficulties with migration of my iPhoto Library via the TimeMachine BackUp of my MacBook Air  to my new iMac (Lion).
Since the MBA has no firewire port, the only way to migrate content is by way of a back-up hard drive (using WiFi for 245 GB would take days).
I used TimeMachine BackUp  with USB port & that took about 2 hours, as expected. iTunes came through without any trouble, but the iPhoto app  on my iMac remains new & empty. However, from checking "about this Mac" in my iMac, I know that the pictures are IN my iMac SOMEWHERE: the # of GB's of pictures (138 GB) apparently transferred, matches the size my iPhoto Library on my MBA. But where are they & how can I put them in the iPhoto Library?
Somehow I ended up with 2 users, but I can't find the Library in either one's applications.

With newer Macs you won't need a crossover ethernet cable as the Macs can detect the situation and adjust to it.
Apple products that require an Ethernet crossover cable. This will tell you if you'll need a crossover cable or not.

  • Creating backups for iPhoto library

I am using an iMac with Mt. Lion as noted below along with iPhoto 11, v. 9.4.3.  I wish to backup the iPhoto Library which is currently 13.72 GB.  I know that whatever device I get to do it with will need to be reformatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and I am clear on how to do that.  I am thinking about using a flash drive, such as something from the Sandisk Cruzer line, probably one of the 32 GB models.  I have read that it can be slow to copy.  Last night I sent a copy of the Library to a Mac Mini that lives in the same room using AirDrop - it took a bit over half an hour which was no problem.  I still want, however, to have a copy in a location away from the house, one that I would need to update from time to time of course, most efficiently by having two drives that get swapped out with each other periodically.
Is this a workable plan?  Are there better flash drives that should be considered?  If a flash drive is not a good idea, why not and what would be better?  I am trying to keep the cost down, but I also want it to work.

If you are looking to store your iPhoto library on Flash Drives (as well as saving to an external hard drive, the fastest read/write Flash drives for reasonable costs, look at Patriot Rage Flash Drives. You can get these in Red in USB 2.0 models as Rage XT USB 2.0 Flash Drives OR you can use Patriot Rage blue USB 3.0 flash drives, instead. According to some third party Flash Drive reviews USB 3.0 Flash drives will  read/write a little faster when using a USB 2.0 connection.
You can find these on Amazon. I only have experience and knowledge on Patriot Rage style Flash drives as these are the most reasonably price flash drives that offer faster read/write speeds than other better known brands of USB flash drives.

  • Size limit for iphoto library file?

I'm in the process of housekeeping my photo folder in readyness to import into iphoto. I have about 30GB of photo's and want to leave iphoto in the mode that makes its own copy.
I'm therefore assuming that the iphoto library file will be over 30GB....is this reasonable or would you say too big? i.e. would such a large file be likely to cause problems?
Also, how does timemachine back it up - I think it is a package, so does timemachine only backup the changes inside the file, or does it take the whole file each time a change is made?
    Thanks for any insight.

I've seen iphoto diet and some terminal commands for old versions of iphoto to shrink the library file size (remove some originals, modified) but don't know if they work on '11. Any ideas how to shrink the size of the library file? I've already gone through and removed dupes and housecleaned.
Never run iPhoto diet or other programs including terminal or use the finder that modify the structure or content of the iPhoto library - doing so will corrupt your library and cause data loss
You can run the iPhoto library on an external drive is disk space is an issue - you can not remove some (or any) versions of the photos from the library

  • How do i use an external drive for iphoto library

I am looking to use an external drive to store my photo library.
    Tips

Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • Freaking OUT!! I have a desktop (IMac) and my IPhoto library is gone! Events gone, albums gone, faces gone!!! I can't even find the folder for IPhoto Library under Pictures under my hardrive. I have no idea how long it's been this way!

Ok so here's what has happened. I got on the Mac to open IPhoto. It opened, but no files PERIOD! No albums, events, photos, faces. They were all empty. I had TONS of albums and photos. I have no clue how long it's been this way, probably a couple of weeks since I've been on it. Ac couple of things come to mind that might have caused or had something to do with...IPhone 4 had to be restored and a back-up and upgrade occurred. Also, I deleted files off my camera while connected. Not sure the culprit, but VERY UPSET! I have never set up Time Machine and have no other back up. I downloaded and purchased File Salvage but I have to get an external hard drive before it will do it. I put the application install CD in last night thinking that if I reinstalled it would help but then I got scared and shut Mac down half way through. I couldn't even find the file IPhoto Library. When I open IPhoto it say IPhoto 9 but when I "get more info" it says IPhoto 8.1.2 or something like that. Please HELP!!

    Try an All Images Search:
    In the Finder:
    Command - f
    Kind: Images
Size: Greater than 300kb (This is to avoid all the thumbnails, icons and so on.)
Set it to search the Mac.
As to why? The most likely answer is user error, I'm afriad. It does point up the importantce of always having a back up.

  • Best workaround for iPhoto library on timecapsule

    Hi,
    I've got a macbook here, with a time-capsule connected.
I would like to work with the iPhoto library on my time-capsule, as the library is quite big.
Extra info: I've already noticed that if I put the library on the time-capsule iPhoto is real unstable (could be the timecapsule, could be the more then 20.000 images).
Q: What would you suggest as the best workaround?

WHat sort of connection do you have to the TC? Wireless? A strong warning: If you're trying to edit the Library (that is, make albums, move photos around, keyword, make books or slideshows etc.) or edit individual photos in it via Wireless be very careful. Dropouts are a common fact of wireless networking, and should one occur while the app is writing to the database then your Library will be damaged. Simply, I would not do this with my Libraries.

  • Slow restore speed for iPhoto library

After iPhoto '11 destroyed my iPhoto library (known bug--do not open iPhoto '11 until you run software update), I am trying to restore from my Time Capsule. My restore speed seems ridiculously slow. I have gotten about 1gb of the 86gb file in the last hour. I am connected via Cat6 ethernet cable from the Time Capsule to my MB Pro. I can download files off the internet at much greater speeds than this is moving. I have rebooted the Time Capsule and the laptop. The original and subsequent backups go much faster.
Any ideas? I don't really have 32 hours to leave this thing hard wired to the Time Capsule.

As an update, after 30 hours of copying the 86gb file, something happened and the process crapped out with a cryptic message about finding "" (double quotation marks). Could not make sense of the message, and I was 77GB into the copy. I think that means at least most of the pics made it across.
I purchased Back-in-Time to try and copy the file to a different machine. I was able to mount the backup sparse bundle (after I deactivated Time Machine on the original host) and see the file with Back-in-Time on another machine. The copy is proceeding with some serious pace more appropriate to a giagbit ethernet link, and it looks like it will only take a couple of hours.

  • 'iphoto will open as soon as the iphoto library is available. Time machine might be backing it up" - message been cycling for hours now. Can't access anything in photos

Up till yesterday, our iphoto was working correctly. At one point, I noticed the slideshow wasn't displaying, so I opened iphoto and the message said there was a newer version, so I selected upgrade. The next message said the library needs rebuilding. Selected rebuild. Next,
I got the message in the header, and it's been cycling for hours now with no result. I'm not computer friendly, so I could use some help.

    Thanks for the reply.
I was wrong - the OS is 10.6.8. Is that old, too? I don't know where to find the version of iphoto I had and which one is trying to upgrade. Where would I find that. I restarted and still the same message.
"Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process for very large libraries may take an hour or more to complete." selected upgrade:
"iphoto is unable to open this library. The library has issues that require rebuilding. The iphoto library is missing required database files and must be rebuilt before it can be opened" selected rebuild:
Next message is: "waiting for iphoto library...will open as soon as library is available. Time machine might be backing it up" and cycling.....
During this time, the iphoto file is unavailable, all options greyed out.
I have an external hard drive connected and time machine is on.

I just updated my iPhoto and now am asked to download the iPhoto Library Upgrader.  I am asked for a password.  I do not know it.  How can I find it or reset it?
Are you asked for the password, when you run the installer for iPhoto Library upgrader?
Then the installer is asking you for the password of your administrator account. You need to authorize the installation.
