"waiting for scanner" Mac OS 10.9

"Waiting for Scanner"  Sounds like a title to a horror movie. I have the same problem - never again.
I have work to do and don't have time for this nonsense. My wife has Brother works perfectly.

Hi bethwicklund,
I understand you're getting the same waiting for scanner message on your Officejet J4580. I'm sorry to hear that but I believe I can assist you.
There is no HP software for the J4580 for the Mac OS X 10.9 operating system, so you will not be able to scan from the front panel of the printer as it requires the HP software to function with the computer. For the computer side of things, it could be the driver being installed that's causing the issue.
I would recommend that you follow this Uninstalling the Printer Software document to get the HP software removed, and then reset your printing system followed by a verify/repair of your disk permissions. Once that is done, please reboot your Mac and please follow this OS X v10.9 Mavericks: Installing and Using the Printer on a Mac document to install the driver via the Apple Updates. Once that is completed, you should be able to scan following this How to Scan: OS X v10.9 document.
Hope this helps, let me know how it goes!

I have a Mac Book Pro and downloaded the latest software OS X.  Now whenever I start my computer, I have to wait for Windows Mac to do its thing.  I checked and the "open at login" option is not checked.  How can I turn this feature off?  It's driving me nuts!!

All fixed Barry.  When I went to restart my computer, the question was right there.  Do you want to open Windows when opening.  NOPE!!
I tried it a few times and thank goodness it worked.  Thank you for your help today.

The transfer of content from sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others too, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. This is just a small selection of what's available, you can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:
Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Comparison of iPod managers
Senuti Mac Only (Currently only the beta version is iPod Touch & iPhone compatible)
    PodView Mac Only
    PodWorks Mac Only
iPodDisk PPC Mac Only (experimental version available for Intel Macs)
TuneAid Mac only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)

iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide

Probably a PC issue, you can try calling AppleCare, you are covered for 90 days from the date of purchase and can find the phone number in the owners manual. Also please look over:

    Thomas,
It would also be extremely helpful to those trying to help you if you complted your Profile so we at least know what iMac and version of OS X is installed. Click Your Stuff in the upper right then click Profile and complete the necessary fields including what part of the planet you're located.

  • Migration assistant waiting for your mac to connect

I'm trying to utilize the migration assistant to migrate from Windows XP3 to a new iMac.  The migration assistant connects and shows me the selected XP machine, but the XP machine is stuck on "waiting for your mac to connect."  I've confirmed both machines are on the same subnet, I can access the folder shares from the mac, etc.  Uninstalled Symantec Internet Security, disabled windows firewall, made sure firewall is disabled on Mac, no stealth mode on router, etc.

  • Wait for 2013 Mac Mini or get a new iMac?

Mac Mini's seem a lot better value as you're not paying for the monitor and they are also a lot better to update.
The iMac doesn't allow you to update hardware yourself really.
Mac Mini's are due the update. I'm thinking to wait as the fastest processor at the cheapest price is quite important to me. Also the Mac Mini has been out for 1 year today.
I could buy an Mac Mini in the time being and take it back in 14 days if it's not to speed and then buy a iMac to see the difference myself in speed, while I'm waiting for the mac Mini. I could possibly even try both that way and maybe i'll just fall in love with the iMac and hopefully the new mac Mini will be released in the time being.
I know the Mac Mini's processor will be slower but the latest one will no doubt be an i7 which will no doubt be fast. Also worried about overheating with the mac mini.
    What should I do?

One way or another you are paying for the monitor whether you get a Mac mini, an iMac, a Powerbook, or a Mac Pro. The difference is can you replace the monitor and the CPU separately or do you have to replace them as a unit. I have used iMacs for years and loved them, but some months ago I switched to a Mac mini with an Apple Thunderbolt monitor. Upgradability is not the forte of any Mac short of the Mac Pro and its upgradability is almost entirely from external devices. Only Apple knows what the next iMac and Mac mini will be like, but the new new Mac Pro demonstrates what Apple's engineers are thinking of.
That said, not even the rumor sites are saying anyghing about a new Mac mini so I would not hold my breath waiting on a new one. So if you need and/or want a Mac mini, now is as probably as good a time as any to get one. My 2.6GHz i7 with a 1.1TB Fusion drive, 16GB of RAM and a 27" Tunderbolt monitor is proving to be a very good and reliable machine. Fast enough that I have never felt any speed constraints. The biggest limiting factor is probably the video, but I am not into RPG or other heavy duty game use so that is not a problem. FWIW I ended up spending roughly the same amount on the fully tricked out Mac mini with the TB monitor as a comprarably equipped iMac. I will get well financially in a few years when I buy another faster and more powerful Mac mini, or maybe even a Mac Pro if I am feeling really flush at the time.
By the way when I do upgrade I already have plans to use my current Mac mini as a "headless" file server tucked away in a closet somewhere.

  • Wait for new Mac Pro's or buy a 27" iMac?

Hi, I currently own an early 2009 2.66 ghz Quad Core Mac Pro with 8 gigs of memory. My Mac Pro has 4 internal Hard drives filled up with data (over 4 tb of storage space).
I plan to upgrade to either the new Mac Pro's  (ariving in late July or early august) or the new 27" iMac. I'm aware that if I went with the Mac Pro then I will need to buy a 27" LED Cinema display.
How do the new 27" iMac's with SSD drives in terms of performance compare to my older Mac Pro? Storage space is important to me.
If I customized a 27" imac then I would get it with 16 gb of memory, a 256gb SSD and a 2TB Drive. unfortunately it's still not much space for me. One option is to buy a Drobo FS NAS and add additional storage to my imac that way. The other is to wait for the new Mac Pro's.
The other is the price. I don't want to spend more than $4000 for a new computer. If I customized a current Mac Pro with 512gb SSD and a 2tb drive, (I will add more drives in the future) a 27" LED Apple Cinema Display, 16 gb of memory then I will be paying over $6000.
That's way higher than I'd like to spend. Will the new Mac Pro's have much improved for cheaper?
What do you think that I should do?

Why not see what Barefeats and Macperformanceguide have already done in terms of performance and buying advice?
With iMac, you don't compete with say 6-core 3.33GHz or have upgrad options and may be limited in other ways. And of course you don't want to pay for Apple price and slow SSD. Besides which most Mac Pro owners use an SSD for system, and don't want 500GB SSD (which is what Apple's would be).
just buy a good SSD now from OWC now.  Buy the minimal configuration from Apple, a WD Black 2TB is less than $149.
As for outgrowning a two year old Mac Pro... see if you can upgrade the processor.
Do you think you will be ready for having to use Lion and that your software will be too?
    The 2010 2.8GHz $2119 + 3 x 8GB OWC, SSD, W3670 3.2GHz 6-core $600 is not even $3995. As for 27" I leave that to others and whether 3rd party.  But, you're saying you can't use the monitor you have now?

  • HT4796 im having trouble getting my laptop to connect to my mac using windows migration assistant. my mac comes up with a code but my laptop is waiting for my mac to respond but nothing happens

    hi all
im having trouble getting my laptop to connect to my mac using migration assistant. my mac has a code on the screen but my laptop doesnt respond and just says it waitng for my mac to respond.
    any idea? please

Hi Christina, belated welcome to Apple Discussions if nobody said it already.
I've had some experiences with these new flash memory recording camcorders, and I'll give you a quick rundown of what I've learned. Many of them (JVC, Panasonic, etc.) tend to record in a .MOD file format, which is non-standard, proprietary, and unrecognizable by most software. I thought Canon was usually a little more standards-compliant, but it appears they also use this .MOD format in your specific camera model. There are likely a couple ways we can get around this though!
In order to play the files, you will likely need to change their file format (.MOD) to .AVI manually. You'll have to locate the files on your Mac, and then manually change the file names so that the file extension (after the period) is .AVI
At that point, a video player application such as http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html>VLC should play the files fine!
You should be able to transfer new video files from the camera to the Macbook Pro with no problems as well. Just plug in the camera to the computer via USB, and also make sure the camera is plugged in to charge. Once it's plugged in, open iMovie (came with the MBP, in the Applications folder) and the MBP should take care of the rest.
Let me know if you have any success with any of this!
FYI, the thread that I got some of the above information from is here:

  • Wait for New Mac Pro?

I have an old, 8-Core, 2007 Mac Pro which is starting to get very taxed by the heavy usage I put it through with my music software. It's also still running OS10.6.8. As you can imagine, I need to upgrade asap.
There's a rumor that a new MAC PRO might be out by end of this year (2014) / early 2015 with the new Xeon processors, so I'm wondering if I should wait till then?...
Also, some say that an 8-Core machine would be better than a 12-Core, because each processor is a higher speed (i.e. 3GHz vs 2.7).
For heavy audio use (I used Digital Performer with many VIs, plugs, video etc), are 8 cores at a faster speed better than 12 Cores at a slower speed?...
Any thoughts would be most appreciated!
    Gracias!

If you have not already, things you can do:
FBDIMMs are cheap if you want to try a new set. $22 for 2x2GB on Amazon.
Next: an SSD boot drive is a must. I would go with Samsung 840 EVO 500GB which are priced nicely and very fast even on SATA II.
Next, if you can, buy one or two more SSDs and put on Sonnet Tempo Pro SSD. Expensive but then very few PCIe SSD controllers really work well and properly on a 2,1 - This will be where all your audio is handled and 900MB/sec should have you set.
The only thing you lack if it is a true lack is you cannot use more than 4GB RAM per process, no "64-bit kernel mode" hence installing anything past Lion. But you should be running Lion. Your software should all be Lion or Mavericks compliant.
3rd party 8-core upgrades to the Mac Pro nMP 6,1 are better but at huge cost to configure. MHz will almost always 99% rule and matter no matter how many cores or processors.
The 1TB SSD in the nMP and 6-core is probably your sweet spot. And forget 12-core.
But first I think you can get your 2,1 stable and working better.
Apple's event is aimed at the iCrowd - maybe a mini thrown in? definitely iDevice (but short supply of screens) and of course Yosemite is deep into GMs now.
One thing to avoid: new OS along with new hardware. Give the vendors time to get hardware and applications nailed together working, and stay off the "bleeding edge."

  • Waiting for approval from other device on mac

Im waiting for the macs keychain access to send approval to one of my other devices for approval after a fresh installation of mavericks 10.9.3,

    Hello pj o\'connell,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Please see below for instructions on troubleshooting this issue of not receiving the verification code:
I'm not receiving the verification code via SMS.
Make sure that you have a good cellular network connection on your phone.
Check that your phone number is one that can receive SMS messages. You can do this by having someone send you a text message.
Check that you have the correct phone number associated with your account:
Devices using iOS 7.0.3 or later: Tap Settings > iCloud > Account, then tap Keychain. Check that the phone number listed under Verification Number is correct. If not, enter another phone number.
Macs using OS X Mavericks v10.9 or later: Choose Apple () menu > System Preferences. Click iCloud, then click Account Details. Check that the phone number listed under Verification number is correct. If not, enter another phone number.
Check Apple System Status to see if there is currently a service outage affecting iCloud Keychain.
If you do not have access to a device that has iCloud Keychain enabled, you can contact Apple Support and verify your identity for help completing iCloud Keychain setup.

  • Quad G5 or wait for Mac Pro?

Hi. So I'm finally making the switch to Mac! Should I get the Quad G5 or should I wait for the Mac Pro? Also, What would be better, dual 23" monitors or a single 30" monitor?
    Apple G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

The other question is when do you need it. You can bet that even if the Mac Pro's (presuming that's the new name, that's what I've been guessing and it seems logical, but I haven't seen anything official, yet) announced in August, that getting one before October will be a neat trick unless you're writing a review for one of the big Mac mags or websites.
Moreover, Adobe especially has taken a wait and wait some more approach with respect to the creative suite. I expect CS3 to be universal and available prior to the end of the year, but when? Who knows. Moreover, I'm always leery of using critical apps on a first gen transition machine where the app has had significant rewrites/porting done.
If it were my money, I'd buy the Quad G5 now because you can work in all those apps you mentioned today and the next versions will work as well. The key is today, tho. If you can wait on the new box and the accompanying apps (meaning likely October), then definitely wait since the MacPro's are likely to be wicked fast and worth the wait. The caveat being the cutting edge sometimes cuts... If your ability to pay rent depends on working now, then current G5, no question. If being ahead of the curve in a few months is better, then wait. 'Course, there's probably another dozen ways to parse it, but you get the picture.
As for monitors, the question to me is what is your workflow. I would go with the single 30" monitor because you get a longer timeline view, bigger viewing windows and less desk real estate. But if you really need a palette screen because that's your workflow and you just need the palettes to be out of the way, then the question would be more like, "do I go with a 30" and 17" or two 23" monitors." I, frankly, am over the dual monitor craze. Too much neck movement for me. The 30" monitor is gigantic and should be plenty big enough.
    Ymmv, hope this helps.

  • Wait for Intel G5 or buy power mac pro intel now????

This is for video and multimedia processing and i know Qaud g5 is best on the market right now but i need somnething within a few months with fast processing power with intel because that will be the newest tech. that wont go out of date anytime soon. So what do I do Wait for power mac G5 Intel which i predict in year or just buy the mac book pro but scared it won't process as fast as i think it will. I just absolutly cant handle when using multiple layers and when I edit them waiting for the process time to make each of the changes. WHAT SHOULD I DO!!!!!!

You're not even comparing apples to apples here. The MBP is faster than the G4 Powerbooks, but it will in no way compete with a Quad G5! Not to mention, the MBP maxxes out at 2GB memory, which although good, is not nearly enough for serious mutimedia processing like you mentioned. If I didn't already have a D2.5, I'd buy a Quad now - why wait.

  • Still waiting for up to date to be shipped?

I was curious to whether or not any other people are still waiting for their Mac OS X Leopard "up to date" cd to be shipped. I ordered mine on the 23rd and it still hasn't even been prepared for shipment at this time. I have spoken to a customer service manager but the issue with my order escaped her. She was going to be contacting her supervisor to see if they could see what was going on. She said I should expect a call back tomorrow.
I am being patient about the wait as i figure supply is exceeding demand, but I know of two people who purchased the "up to date" upgrade in the days after mine, and their cd's have already shipped.
Has your "up to date" shipped or are you still waiting. When did you order the CD?

I have ordered mine on 16th Oct..on the website it says shipped on 25th but its not here yet..:(
I called Apple thrice. The tracking number they provided is no good as they have shipped it using regular mail. Once they said it is going to take 5 days to be here in canada. Then a crazy sales rep gave me few instructions how to install leopard instead of actually finding out what happened to my shipment. The third time they said there has been "some problems with some of the DVDs" so they cancelled the initial shipment and are waiting for the new disks to become available for shipment....whatever that means. He said he will get back to me via email in 1 hour....it has been 2 days already ! They have charged my credit card and the tracking site shows an invoice with all the number and stuff...Strange behavior from Apple...
