Waiting for western digital

Hi all,
I recently added a 500GB western digital 'my book' to my set up.
The question I want to ask is, why is it that whenever I try to do anything such as opening an app or file I have to wait for the 'my book' to power up before I can get started. It's obviously powered down when not in use but its as though the whole system has to wait until this thing starts up again before responding. I presume I'm using the correct description when saying 'powered down/up'. If its not been running for a while it'll make the noise of a drive starting up anytime there is an activity required, this doesnt mean accessing anything off the drive either. It'll do this if I'm accessing data from one of the partitions too.
I've looked in the startup items to see if theres anything obvious there but cant see anything.
I have had another external hard drive prior to this and that never interfered with the running of my mac. Is it possible something has been installed during the intitial setup. It's connected via firewire BTW

If it has a special driver, it would have been installed by you (running a package or installer program) and you would know about it. A drive cannot automatically install something on your Mac without your knowledge. If something needs to get installed in your System (which would be necessary for a driver to be active), Mac OS X takes the additional precaution of asking for admin user authentication before proceeding.
Take a look at the manual. The drive may have special features that are enabled or disable using switches on the back of the drive.
Another possibility is formatting. If the drive was never re-formatted for use with a Mac, it may be FAT32 format. That could slow things down.

  • How to wait for a digital input to go high?

I bet the following question is explained somewhere but I don't know how to find it.
Is there an optimal way to wait for a digital input to transition from 0 to 1? I mean, other than creating a loop that continously polls the input line is there a better way to wait for the transition? With all the "event driven" capability of CVI I suspect there's a slick way to do this but I don't know how to find it. I'm willing to RTFM if I know where to look.
    thanks

    Hi,
I have never done this, but it looks like it is possible to use the DAQmxRegisterSignalEvent function to assign a function that will be called when a "change detection event" occurs.
It works on a task basis, so if I'm not mistaken, you need to put the digital to be tracked into a separate task.
It is not stated if all NI hardware is compatible with this functionality, so try and see if it works for you.
    Hope this helps,
Edit: It looks like you have already found the solution by yourself

  • Wait for the digital signal

Is there like "wait for the panel activity" in digital signal, "wait for the digital signal goes up" etc. ?
Or is it bad to make it with sequence structure and inside of first sequence use while loop?

If you need to wait for a digital signal before continuing on with your program, the best way is to have a while loop that continuously reads the signal and stops the loop when the signal goes high. You can put this loop in the first frame of a sequence, or you can wire an output from the loop (like error out from the device read vi) into your next step. Be sure to put a delay (100mSec) in your loop so that the loop does not hog CPU time.

  • Compatible HD Export for Western Digital Live Hub

Need to Export 720 x1280 HDV Clips for Large Format (Life Size) Signage. Just purchased WD TV Live Hub which I thought would work well as an HD  Digital player connected via HDMI to an HD projector. Was working in Pro Res for highest quality but WDTV says incompatible. Have tried numerous compressor settings with no luck - except MPEG4 (which did wok but the quality was way to low.). Need High quality life size image. Western Digital says quicktime, AVC and .mov are compatible.  Anybody know a compressor setting that will work and still give me the 720 x 1280 HD quality I need?
If not, does anyone know of a digital player that will output quicktime HD files?  Thanks so much.

If .mov files are compatible, why not just stay with HDV…or try an H.264 setting @ about 12 Mbps?

  • Great sale price for Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD6400AAKS 640GB

Just a heads up for anyone who didn't already see this. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136218 Earlier today this drive was selling for $130. Don't know how long this sale will last, but $110 for this drive seems like a pretty good price (free shipping is also available). Bare Feats gave a favorable review of this drive recently. http://www.barefeats.com/harper14.html I took the plunge and ordered four (I just have to hope that newegg packages them well enough so that they actually work when I get them). Hope this helps.

Newegg customers, and Mac Pro owners, have sometimes had trouble with OEM drives they sell though. Just a word of caution.
And yes, handling is one of the largest causes for 'broken egg' syndrome.

If you are going to upgrade your harddisk, why not upgrade to SSD harddisk. You macbook pro supports SATA II SSD drives acccording to these Specs. SATA III is backward compatible with SATA II, so you can buy SATA III drive if you can't find SATA II drives.
Upgrading to SATA II SSD drive you give you super fast performence.
These are a few Segate SSD drives from amazon, that are not that expensive, I guess.
As for Western Digital vs Segate comparison, I second clintonfrombirmingham's suggestion. Western Digital never works for me.
    *** After the harddisk upgrade
    Install latest OS if possible

I had a 640GB HDD in my Early 2008 Macbook and it was just too much it would always freeze up the computer a bit for only a few seconds but ya. Then I realized that it was the size of the HDD that was causing it since the Early 2008 Macbook models can only handle a MAX od 500GB while the Early 2008 Macbook Pros could have a MAX of 640GB (Lucked out there!) lol But ya the Early 2008 Mocbooks can only handle a MAX HDD size of 500GB and that's it!! lol

  • I have a 250GB western digital external hard drive for my time machine backups. if i just want to backup and recover my photos and movies how do i do that with time machine?

I have a 250GB western digital external hard drive for my time machine backups. I did not download the software that came with the external HD. If I only want to backup my photos and movies from my Macbook how do I do that in Tme Machine with my external HD?

Format the HDD in Disk Utility>Erase to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and the open System Preferences>Time Machine and set up the external disk as the Time Machine HDD.  Then look at the Options, and exclude what you do not want backed up.
    Ciao.

  • Can i use exfat format for my external western digital harddrive so that i can use in both windows and mac?

can i use exfat format for my external western digital harddrive so that i can use in both windows and mac?
    thanks in advance.
    <Email Edited by Host>

Yes you can. OS X version 10.6.6 and later can read/write exFAT. Windows XP SP3 and later can read/write exFAT. As posted by Radiation Mac, you can do it from Windows or from OS X.
However, I've noticed Windows to be somewhat picky about drives formatted on a Mac. So, if Windows can't read it, try formatting it on the Windows machine, and see how it works on the Mac.

  • Format a Western Digital Elements for MAC and PC

I have a new Western Digital Elements and I need to format it for Mac and PC. I have a G-Tech drive (which has content from an FCP edit) and I need to make a duplicate of the content onto the Western Digital so that the client who has a PC can open the files.
Any help? I tried searching in Disk Utility for FAT-32 but couldn't find it and didn't want to do something to harm the drive.
    Thanks!

I have numerous external drives all formatted as FAT 32 on the Mac which transfer Quicktime back and forth between Windows and Mac machines.
As an additional note, check that the CODEC used for these files is available on the PC or they wont play.
We encode our client previews as H264 for playback only.
    Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility > Partition >
in volume scheme select 1 partition
    format: MS DOS FAT
    options > Master Boot Record
apply and it will partition and format the drive

  • I have a western digital external hard drive that needs to be re formatted for use on my but iMac but I do not want to lose existing data

I have a Western Digital external hard drive that needs to be re formatted for use on my iMac, but I do not want to lose existing data, is this possible ?

Formatting a disk always erases all the data on it. Your only option is to back it up elsewhere and restore it once formatted.

  • System is looking for a Western Digital drive

I've had a Spotlight indexing problem that seems to be partially fixed but I see something in console under the system log that may be preventing Spotlight from finishing it's indexing.
    Here's the reference:
    Sep 17 11:28:57 Macintosh-2 WDDriveManagerStatusMenu[167]: *** attempt to pop an unknown autorelease pool (0x843400)
This is a reference to a Western Digital Drive...the drive was put in a new case.
I keep getting this error message in Console in the system log...Spotlight gets to within 30 secs of indexing, then keeps delaying it's completion.  Could this error message be preventing the completion?

People used to get that Console message before WDDriveManager was updated for Snow Leopard. Back in 2009-2010, it was not compatible with Snow Leopard.
Do you have the latest updates installed for WDDriveManager?
Secondly, my understanding is that the main purpose of WDDriveManager is to enable functionality of lights and buttons on the WD hard drive case. However if you moved the drive to a new case, perhaps such functionality is no longer relevant or perhaps there is a conflict there (software looking for a certain type of HD case but can't find it?). In that case, you might consider removing or uninstalling WDDriveManager as it might no longer work with this new case you have.
Are you using Snow Leopard? (I assume so because that's this forum, but your post indicates 10.4). Do you have the latest version of WD software? What are you using the WD software for? Is your HD case compatible with WD's software?

how do I figure out if I have usb 3.0?  I am trying to buy compatible external hard drive (western digital my passport for mac) and I can not figure out if it will work with my mac book.

Dont buy a Western Digital, get a Hitachi or Seagate (Toshiba is made by Hitachi). These are the most reliable, and the HD used inside Macs.
ALL HD can be made compatible with your MAC (including a WD if you already bought same), ......they just need to be formatted for the Mac platform, format them in Disk Utility as Mac OSX extended journaled.

I have a Western Digital 1TB My Passport for Mac which regularly backs up my iMac.  It is creating a backup file apparently every day.  I decided to remove all but the most recent 3 backup files and moved them to trash, but am unable to empty the trash.  How do I empty the trash now?
