Wake Sleeping iMac connected via Wifi

I just got an Airport Express for use on my home network with my iMac.
My main motivations for purchasing this is to use the Apple Remote function on my iPhone to stream music from my iMac via Airplay.
This is working great except I cannot connect when when my iMac goes to sleep.
Under the Energy System Preferences I have "Wake for network access" checked.
However If my iMac goes to sleep for an extended period it will not wake - If I go and jiggle the mouse i notice that it does needs to reconnect to the Airport.
Is there a setting on the iMac or Airpot that I'm missing?
I thought I saw somewhere that you cannot wake a Mac when connected via Wifi - only via Ethernet.
If this is the case i can just run a wire, but I would prefer to use a wireless connection.
I realize i can just use Airplay directly from my iPhone however there are items on my iMac not on my IPhone
Also I need to wake my iMac for remote access.
Thanks
Jeff

Under the Energy System Preferences I have "Wake for network access" checked.
This setting only applies to Ethernet connections, and requires a network device to send it a magic packet.

  • Remotely waking a sleeping iMac (connected via wifi)

Now that I've figured out how to remotely connect to my iMac via RemoteTap, I need to figure out how to remotely wake it up....as I'd rather not leave it on all the time, or, is there a way just to kill the screen display?

You want to remotely wake your iMac up because you'd rather not leave it awake all the time?
If your iMac is set to be asleep or in standby mode after a period of inactivity, why do you need to wake it up if it is asleep or in standby mode? You can set a screen saver to be enabled automatically after a period of inactivity followed by the screen turning off automatically after another designated period of time along with the computer set to be asleep or in standby mode after a period of inactivity.
If you remotely connect with your iMac with the RemoteTap followed by no longer being connected, your iMac should go to sleep or in standby mode automatically when this is set with your iMac after your designated period of inactivity.
Or maybe I'm misunderstanding what you are wanting to do.

I have a 2007 iMac connected via WiFi. It has been working fine until I turned it on after a recent vacation. Network Preferences indicates that it is correctly connected to my WiFI system but the data input and output rate is virtually zero. I know that the WiFI signal is reaching the iMac since both my iPhone and iPad are working perfectly at that location. I have rebooted the router and the iMac to no avail. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much. Geoff

When i wake up my iMac from sleep my wifi is disconnected.  It also disconnects my iPad, my wives iPad, my iPhone & Sky On Demand which is connected via wifi. To reconnect all devices i have to switch off & then on again wifi on the iMac. Can anyone help?

Had the same issue and finally solved it.  After the upgrade to Mavericks our 2 new Macbook Airs stopped connecting automatically to Wifi while the older machines the kids had still worked fine.
Bought a new airport extreme and problem solved.   Our Airport Extreme was about 5 years old and was probably not compatible with the new OSX.
BTW this was after trying everything people suggested on this forum and a 4 hour marathon tech support call with Apple where we reinstalled the OSX.
***** to need to spend $200 but glad the problem got solved.
New extreme is also mega fast so its all good.

  • I'm able to connect via wifi but not via ethernet

I have a iMac, Mac OS X v10.7.5, and recently had a problem connecting to internet.  I can connect via wifi, but when I try connecting via ethernet it's not working.  When I go to the preferences > network, it shows "green" / connected for ethernet but when I open up Safari or Firefox, it doesn't show a connection to the internet.

  • Can I share my internet connection via wifi AND use my wireless printer at the same time?

Not completely familiar with  wifi capabilities. I have this new setup in my office. I want to share my iMac internet connection via wifi so I can text and check emails using my iPhone (no cell service inside the building). Which works fine. However, I now cannot print wirelessly to my HP printer (LaserJet Pro 400 color). Once Internet sharing is off, I can print just fine. Any other wireless options, or just go get a long USB cable?

    Hi,
It is not a multitasking printer, other devices may keep it therefore the best option in this case: connect it to your wireless router and all devices which are conntected to this router can sahre the printer.
    Regards.

  • I receive a not connected to the internet message several times daily on my iMac connected via airport to a time capsule which accesses the internet via cable modem.. When I input my password to enter network preferences, the connection re-establishes.

I receive a "not connected to the internet message" several times daily on my iMac connected via airport to a time capsule which accesses the internet via a cable modem. Software/firmware is up to date on the iMac (OSX 10.6.8)  and Tme Capsule(7.5.2). Browser is Safari 5.1.
When I input my password at the prompt to enter network preferences, all the lights go green (ie... ethernet, ISP etc.) and the connection re-establishes immediately and states "the connection appears to be working normally".
It more of a nuisance than anything and seems to have started ocurring over the past couple of months. I also have a windows XP box also connected to the same cable modem that I never have internet connectivity issues with. I've verified all the physical aspects of the connections and can't see any evidence of any actual drops in the modem logs. I suspect it is just an intermittent communication loss between the Imac and the Time Capsule, but I am not very familiar with Mac equipment yet.
Just wondering if anyone has experienced a similar problem and what you did (if anything) to resolve it?
    Thanks.

The AirPort Express will connect to your existing wireless network if the network is using WPA2 Personal or WPA/WPA2 Personal wireless security settings.
So, it can join the network as a client and then provide an Ethernet signal to your Time Capsule.
Be sure to configure the Time Capsule to operate in Bridge Mode so that it will be operating on the same network.

What version of iTunes is on the computer? You need at least 11.4.

  • I have an Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station (Simultanious Dual_Band) (MC340LL/A), and updated the software.  After updating no devices can connect via wifi.  Any suggestions.

I have an Appl,e AirPort Extreme Base Station (Simultaneous Dual_Band( MC340LL/A.  After updating the software, no devices can connect via wifi.

As suggested in another discussion area, (AirPort), I reset the AEBS to factory defaults. On the TV, I went to >Settings>General>Network>Configure Wireless>Wireless Networks. I could then see the generic "Apple Network xxxxx" on the TV. From my MacBookPro, I verified that I could connect to the TV by launching iTunes and noting that the TV was now visible in the "Devices" menu. Went back to the AEBS and ran through the "Setup" routine. I did NOT use the "Previous Settings" but instead, saved the old settings profile, created a new wireless network and new settings profile and enabled WPA2 Personal encryption. I then went back to the TV and went through the "Settings" routine again (as noted above). This time, after entering my WPA2 password, the TV connected to the network and problem was solved. Thanks.

  • Can not find air printer - using epson wf 3520 connected via wifi

    Hardware: macbook air
    Software: Osx 10.9.5
Epson printer wf3520 connected via wifi is working - latest printer software installed
-when trying to add an air printer sometimes its showing up under bonjour - usually its not showing as available printer
-when it is installed and I try to print I get the message "printer not connected"
Any help how to install it correctly?

    Hi wolfgangfromhildesheim,
If you've gone through the article that Allen provided, have gotten through to the step where you reset your printing system, and the issue persists, then the next step in the article is for you to contact the printer manufacturer for further assistance.
    If you're unable to print
Check these things if you are unable to print, or if you see the message "No AirPrint Printers Found."
Make sure your printer has paper, and enough ink or toner installed.
Make sure your printer is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your iOS device.
Make sure your printer has power and is turned on. Try turning your printer off and then back on again to see if it resolves your issue.
Check to see if your printer has any error lights or indicators displayed on the printer's control panel. Check the documentation that came with your printer to clear any errors displayed.
Check with your printer's manufacturer to see if any firmware updates are available for your printer. Check your printer's documentation or contact the printer vendor for more information. A firmware update may be available, even if you just bought your printer.

    Take care,

  • Anone connecting via wifi?

    Greetings!
I've been having troubles downloading HD movie files with iTunes 9.0.2. An other content downloads fine after purchase. Problems come when trying to download any file larger than 2 gig or so.
An Apple expert tells me that the problem is that the PC running iTunes is connected via wifi. Unfortunately, moving the machine or router is not a simple option.
So wondering if anyone out there is downloading HD content via wifi and having any issues, or doing fine?
BTW, I use AppleTV to watch the content from the PC, a connection made via the wifi router without issue.
    Thanks!

Works fine for me. I'm using an 8-yr-old Linksys router on 802.11b, set to a channel that doesn't interfere so much with the neighbors.
If this is a new router, check to see if the manufacturer has any firmware updates.

  • Airport Extreme connected via wifi -- will remote MobileMe still work?

I have two Macs: a desktop and a laptop. I have the latest software and I have MobileMe. My internet is physically connected to the desktop computer. The laptop is connected via wifi using a non-Apple router.
According to Apple's website concerning the AirPort Extreme, "Say you’re traveling and you need a file on the hard drive connected to your AirPort Extreme back at home. If you’re a MobileMe member using Mac OS X Leopard or Snow Leopard, no problem. You can access all the files on your shared drive over the Internet."
My question is this: if I attach an Airport Extreme to the laptop -- which is connected via wifi to the network -- will I still be able to access the attached hard drive via MobileMe while traveling, or does this work only if the Airport Extreme is directly wired to the internet?
    Thanks.

    Thanks, very helpful.
Say it loud, this is one of the best things of Airport, you control the volume even with the optical output:
¿However, why I can´t do the same with the optical output of my 2008 Mac Mini?
Each one (Mac mini 2008  and Airport Express 2008) have optical link to both receivers (Denon AVR3805 and Denon AVR1905).
But I must control the volume of the mac mini with the remote of the AVR3805.
It seems Airplay makes some magic, but straight driver of OSX over audio device don´t.
What a PIA (Pain in the ***). They can put Gigabits of audio information in the optical link but they can´t add a layer adding a header of some bytes to the packets, adressed to a smart DAC than can control the analog output with two bytes of information.
IEEE, ¿Will you make a layer specification for smart DACs? Life and devices use would be much simpler.
Apple in the meantime makes the magic he is able with Airplay.
    Some day.

  • I recently purcased a Roku which I connected via WiFi.  Was unhappy with it so disconnected all.  Since that time my Ipad will not connect to the internet.  Any suggestions?

I recently purchased a Roku which I connected via WiFi.  I was unhappy with it so disconnected everything.  Since that time my iPad 1 will not connect to internet although in "settings" it indicated that it is connected.  I turned off the WiFi for 30 seconds as was suggested but still the iPad won't conect.  Anybody have suggestions as to what might provide a "fix"?

I wonder if the roku changed some other settings in your router or pad.
Recycle the router.  Thurn it off for a while, then restart.
On the pad, forget your exiting network.  This will cause it to search for avaialbe, and reset again.  You will likely need to redo any password/ security entry.
Lastly, in settings, general, reset network connections.  You will not lose anything.
