Wake up, MacBook!

I rarely close my computer and let it sleep , but when I do (yeah, I wish I had a picture of The Most Interesting Man, too) it doesn't wake up when I open it; it stays black (although the hard drive does make the short 'I'm waking up!' sound), and all I can do to help is to forcibly shut down and restart the computer. What's causing this, and what can I do to get it to actually start up when I open the computer lid?
Thanks.

I too am having this problem. I am at least reassured that others are as well. My system/Cinema Display worked fine as described above until just recently (sometime after 10.5.2 was released). But the same issues occur:
My MBP is sleeping, I plug in the Cinema Display, I activate my bluetooth mouse and/or keyboard, the Cinema Display lights up momentarilly (with no menu bar ever showing up), and then it goes dark again, after about two seconds of just showing the desktop picture but nothing else.
If I try to open the lid on my MPB, I get that same black screen. It's obviously turned on, but nothing shows up.
It sounds like it is as described above an Apple side issue and not a user one, though if anyone stumbles upon a solution other than a software/graphics update, it would be most appreciated.

  • Can I wake my Macbook Pro from Sleep with the Remote app on the iPhone?

I can't access my Macbook Pro remotely, specially after several hours of inactivity,, whenever I try to access content of my library through the remote app or the Apple TV I'm unable to wake my Macbook Pro up.
My Macbook Pro is 2012 model (the last with de CD Drive) and it's running the Maverick OS, my questions are:
    * I'm unable to find the "Unable Power Nap while plugged" option on the energy saver tab... is that because the model of my laptop doesn't support that?
    * In order to access content from my library remotely, should the "Computer Sleep" option on the energy saver be on "Never" instead of the "1 hour" that I'm currently using... or is there a way to still be able to wake up the laptop with those settings

Do you have a Bonjour Sleep Proxy server on your network?
<About Wake on Demand and Bonjour Sleep Proxy>
If you do not have a Bonjour Sleep Proxy server on your local network, then you cannot allow your Mac to go to sleep at all.  System Preferences -> Energy Saver -> Computer Sleep -> Never (slide all the way to the right).

  • After 10.8.2 update i can no longer wake my macbook from standby with keyboard when the lid is closed

I just updated to 10.8.2 and now i can no longer wake my macbook froom standby when the lid is closed, it directly goes back to sleep
    steps to reproduce:
    1. attach secondary monitor and keyboard
    2. close lid
    3. wait 5 seconds for going to standby
    4. press any key on keyboard and type in user-credentials (notice how the 2nd monitor becomes the mainscreen)
    5. wait 5 seconds
    6. standby again
    side note:
i also have sudo nvram boot-args="iog=0x0" enabled, because i like to not use the integrated screen when its attached to a secondary screen, but since it goes back to standby right after login this is pretty much pointless

Same here, I think changed something in 10.8.2 that wrecked the "Open-MBP Clamshell Mode."  sigh

  • Logitech diNovo Mac USB Wireless Keyboard - Wake Closed Macbook Pro?

My brother wants to use his Macbook Pro 15" 2008 (previous body style) in a "dock" setup with an external monitor. This keyboard uses a small wireless USB dongle to connect to the keyboard. With Macbook pro cover closed, I cannot get the DiNovo's spacebar to wake the Macbook pro. Is USB-Wake support on the Macbook Pro?

In theory, if you open System Preferences/Bluetooth and select the device then hit 'Advanced' you should be able to check 'Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer' and it should work. I'm a little suspicious about the USB dongle side of the equation though ...

  • Can't wake my MacBook up from sleep after Mountain Lion update

I have a MacBook Pro spring 2011 model. I did purchase the Mountain Lion update in September and this is when my problem started. I do have the put hard drives to sleep when possible turned off. The only change I have made to the Mac is the ram, I upgraded to 8GB but haven't had any issues with it. Any suggestions on what to do? The hard restart or having to shut my Mac down everytime is a pain.

  • When i try to wake my macbook after sleep the keypad lights up but the screen stays black. I have to switch off and restart. How do I fix this?

After my Macbook goes into sleep mode it sometimes won't wake. The keypad lights up but the screen stays black. This problem has only occured after updating to OSX 10.7.2.
All I can do is switch off and restart. Then any programs I have not 'quit' all open.

    OK, I have a fix.
After spending about an hour online with Apple Care without success, I did a reinstall of the Lion OS. It fixed the problem.  I was concerned that I would lose data or settings, but the reinstall was seemless and everything was the way it was before the reinstall except that the "black screen on wake" problem was fixed.
I started the reinstall before I went to bed and it was waiting for me the next morning.
Here is a link to the page on how to do the reinstall:

    Hope this helps.

  • Can't wake my MacBook Pro?

Hello, I slept my MacBook Pro last night and can't wake it? I have rebooted and no bing sound is made. The screen remains black. The volumn keys blip. It is as if it is still locked in sleep mode! Any potential solutions most welcome... Thanks

No startup chime means hardware problem.
You may have to take the MBP to the Apple store to get it fixed.
    Best.

  • Can't wake up MacBook

I left my Macbook open and came back a half hour later and the screen was black. Couldn't get it to light up. Tried turning it off and on again but to no avail. Any ideas out there?

Could be a hardware problem. Bring it to an Apple store and get them to look at it. Not really sure what your problem is. Sorry!

  • Reboot instead of Wake Up (MacBook Unibody)

    Hi,
since I installed Snow Lion at my three years old MB Unibody the computer reboots the system instead of waking up from sleep after having put the system to sleep with closed display.
Do you have any ideas how to get rid of it?
    Thanks

Open the link and try all its steps. First, SMC and PRAM reset. http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11243 http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964?viewlocale=en_US

  • I've connected my macbook pro (os 10.6.8) to an external display, but it will not go into clam shell mode!  When I close the lid the laptop goes to sleep, and I am unable to wake it using the external keyboard or mouse.

A rundown of what I've tried:
Adjusting energy settings to try to prevent sleep
Pluging the USB keyboard and wacom tablet directly into the laptop (as opposed to a usb hub)
My laptop's power cable is connected
My display (a Vizio TV) is recognized in the System Preferences panel
I'd been using this TV for about a year with my older Macbook Pro (OS 10.5.8), though using a different wireless keyboard and mouse
***Update:  The issue seems to lie with the keyboard and wacom tablet.  I am trying to use a wireless Case Logic keyboard (with dongal) and wired wacom tablet to wake the Macbook Pro in clamshell mode.  To experiment, I tried using my Logitech wireless keyboard & mouse set (also dongal) that I had been using before and it wakes the computer without any problems!  However, I really need to be able to use my wacom tablet.  If I switch to the tablet after waking the computer using the Logitech keyboard & mouse it works, but once the computer sleeps it won't work anymore.  I could keep switching back and forth I suppose, but it's sort of a pain.  There has to be an easier way!  Any ideas why the wired wacom tablet is unable to wake the computer in clamshell mode?
    Thanks!

So your keyboard or mouse won't wake the Mac when you close the lid correct? Try resetting the SMC and pram
    Shut down the computer.
Disconnect the MagSafe power adapter from the computer, if it's connected.
    Remove the battery.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
Reconnect the battery and MagSafe power adapter.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • How to wake Macbook Pro up remotely?

    Hi,
I assume you have set home sharing in iTunes on the MBPro.
If your MBPro is listed initially under "Computers" on AppleTV and you see your library, "Computer Sleep" option to never is at this point a work around.
If you do not see your MBPro under "Computers" on AppleTV, check the wifi settings of the MBPro and Apple TV to ensure they are connecting correctly.
    Hope this helps

  • MacBook Air won't wake up after sleep

I've been reporting sleep problems with my iMac for a while in the past. No-one here would take it seriously (probably hardware, your reports are incidents, no-one else has these problems) so I just went away and I disabled the sleep function of my iMac alltogether, and I won't select the "sleep" button in the login screen anymore, or select "sleep" from the apple menu. No sleep no problem, right?
*Well, I bought a Macbook Air three days ago, and in those three days I have had TWO occasions already where I wanted to wake the Macbook after sleep* (closed lid) and it wouldn't wake up. All I get is the rainbow mouse pointer and the Macbook is unusable unless I reboot it.
Mind you, nothing is connected to the macbook but the power cable, and I find it hard to believe that my Macbook Air would also suffer from 'hardware problems' like my iMac alledgedly is.
In all my time using OSX 10.4 on my 17" PowerPC MacBook pro I have never had any problems, but since switching to Intel Macs with 10.5 I have these "sleep" problems all the time.
What gives, and can I expect Apple to do anything about this problem that I've been having since I bought my iMac more than a year ago, and is now also spoiling my MacBook Air experience?

I have a Macbook Air and it also frequently (6 times out of 10) will not wake from sleep mode, only way to revive it is to hold down power button for 10 secs and force a restart. VERY FRUSTRATING!
I also occasionally use an external Apple 24' Screen (Non LED) and find that the MBAir will often freeze when you plug that into it or unplug it from it.. Perhaps I have a hardware fault on the MB Air? Or will this be fixed in software?

  • MacBook Air has spinning rainbow every time it wakes up from sleep

I have been having an issue now for a few weeks where everytime I wake my Macbook air from sleep I get the spinning rainbow and the Wifi indicator at the top will be completely gone and it will never recover.  I then have to restart my mac and sometimes ill get the flashing question mark when it restarts and sometimes it starts up fine after the restart.  Its a pain to have to restart my mac everytime i want to use it.  Can anyone suggest potential fixes for this problem?
    2011 MacBook Air
    OSX 10.8.2

    Try Reset SMC.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
    Hope this helps.

  • MacBook wakes up from sleep when it shouldn't

Especially MacBook Pro's with bigger screens tend to wake up if they get a little bit of pressure one the screen causing the keys to go down and wake the MacBook/MacBook Pro up. This can drain the battery making the MacBook unavailable for beeing used while traveling.
Is there a way to prevent the MacBook from waking up through the keyboard? It would be helpful to have the MacBook wake up only by pressing the PowerUp-Button.

Apple has a KB article about this. They recommend you not connect or disconnect any external device (USB or FW) while the computer is asleep. It can cause pre-mature wake up even with the lid closed resulting in a lot of heat generation. This would not be desirable if the computer were in a closed area. It can also cause the computer to shutdown or kernel panic.
