Waking computer any password works

Hello -
I am using my work MacBook at home. When my computer goes to sleep, and then I try to wake it, the username and password prompt appears. Unsually I have to enter my password to get access to my computer. However, now I can type ANYTHING in the password box and it unlocks my screen. ***. I will try it at work tomorrow. Is there a difference between my work environment and non-work environment? Doesn't make any sense. So now, anyone can access my computer if it is sleeping and just think to enter anything into the password box.

Very strange. Let's try a couple of other things. Launch Disk Utility (in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder) and under the Utilities menu choose Repair Permissions. That may take a few minutes. After that completes, put the computer to sleep, then wake it and see what happens. If that doesn't work, try Safe Boot: shut the computer down, then immediately after you turn it back on, hold down the left shift key. Keep holding it down until you see the gray apple. It will take longer than normal to start up and should take you to the login screen where you'll type your password (or both username and password, depending on how you have things set up). Try the sleep/wake process again. If that doesn't work, you may need to reinstall the system software, which really isn't a big deal, but if you haven't done it before it might be stood idea to have your tech person at work do it...or you could make an appointment at an Apple Store and they could help you. There are also very good instructions at apple.com/support. or a Google search on "reinstall Mac OS X" will get some good articles about how to do this. Make sure you have a good backup before reinstalling the system software. (Doing this "archive and install" keeps all of the user accounts intact, but if something goes wrong during the process, it's possible to lose data.) Good luck. One more thing -- make sure your backup disk is in good shape. I've known people who have carefully backed up their hard drive, and done an "erase and install", and then when they went to retrieve their data found that the backup disk decided to choose that moment to completely and utterly fail.

Firefox also makes regular backups of your bookmarks in a folder named bookmarkbackups in your personal settings folder. You can restore the backup to your new Firefox, but unlike importing the HTML-format file, it is a complete drop-in replacement, so if you have saved new bookmarks you do not want to lose, the export/import method may work better for you.
By default, Windows hides your personal settings folder so the easiest way to access it is from inside Firefox. You can use either:
* "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
* (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
* type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter
In the first table on the page, click the "Show Folder" button. This will launch a window showing your Firefox settings files.
You might want to back up this whole folder if you have other data you want to preserve from your XP computer.
Either way, you should find the bookmarkbackups folder here and when you click into it, find maybe 10 files with dates in their names.

FORCE IPAD INTO RECOVERY MODE
1. Turn off iPad
2. Turn on computer and launch iTunes (make sure you have the latest version of iTune)
3. Plug USB cable into computer's USB port
4. Hold Home button down and plug the other end of cable into docking port.
DO NOT RELEASE BUTTON until you see picture of iTunes and plug
5. Release Home button.
ON COMPUTER
6. iTunes has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes.
7. Select "Restore iPad"...
Note:
1. Data will be lost if you do not have backup
2. If you did not do step 4 properly, start all over again.

Okay, I seem to have solved the problem I posted about earlier. I noticed that the language preference in the upper right hand corner of the screen (between the date and time and the Spotlight icon) had somehow gotten switched from American English to French. When I switched it back to American English, my password worked when waking the computer from sleep mode. I have no idea why changing the language preference would affect the way the password works but that seems to have been the case. I'll post again if I experience more problems.

Thanks for the suggestion, Chris. I actually did not resolve the issue which is why i did not post an answer.
it turns out that my iphone seems to default to an incorrect User ID (it defaults to an @me account, which is not something that i have ever used).
even when i change the User ID in my settings for the iTunes store, it still appears when i attempt to get updates for my existing apps. however, it does seem to use the correct ID when i attempt to purchase new apps.
If someone actually had an answer to correct this, i would love to update my existing apps.

The only thing you can do is place the iPod in Recovery mode and restore via iTunes on a computer. It is a good security feature.

Make sure you sign out of the other devices and then sign in with the new PW

You can't reset it. If you don't konw the password then you can't use that backup

Close All Open Apps... Sign Out of your Account... Perform a Reset... Try again...
Reset ( No Data will be Lost )
Press and Hold the Sleep/Wake Button and the Home Button at the Same Time...
Wait for the Apple logo to Appear...
Usually takes about 15 - 20 Seconds... ( But can take Longer...)
Release the Buttons..

I've tried both. First, I tried on my pc, where iTunes had installed iCloud when it last updated. I have iTunes installed on this computer (and on my iPad and iPhone), but that wasn't the issue.
So I went online, thinking I needed a separate iCloud Apple ID, but it prompted me for my current Apple ID and gave me the message about my ID being "valid" but not an iCloud account," which, lol, was what it had asked me to do in order to create one. I checked, and at least one other user is having the same issue. I'll attempt to copy/paste the Support request url: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4430653?tstart=0

You will be using your original AppleID and password. that works for any computer you own now or in the future. Do not make a new appleID.

Why doesn't my new password work ?

I have requested and received your instructions for changing my password TWICE ! Each time I made the change and received your email to acknowledge the change. However, when I try to update Reader, as it appears on my computer dashboard, it will not accept my new password. It begins to download and states that the password is incorrect. Can you help me to have the new password work ??

There is no request from Adobe to enter any password when downloading Adobe Reader.
You may be prompted for a password when you install Reader, because of your own computer's user account control - that password is nothing to do with Adobe, it's the one you created when you installed your operating system.
