Waking from sleep only brings up blank screen with cursor

I have the MacBook Pro retina 11,3 (released October 2013). As the title suggests I am having issues with my Mac not giving me a log in screen when waking from sleep. It seems to happen when I don't close the clamshell and it goes to sleep, when I wake it up from that the result it s backlit black screen with a cursor. I can click, hit the keys on the keyboard but absolute nothing happens. I close the clamshell and open it but they screen seems to not turn they backight off and so reopening it still leaves me with the same screen. Usually the log in screen to type my password will reappear within 20-60 seconds after and I am able to type my password and everything works as normal.
This his problem has been around since Mavericks for me. I figured I would wait for Yosemite to see if it gets fixed but it still is an issue. This problem is persistent even after compleat reinstalls, even without transferring any data over to the new install.
I believe there is something to do with the discreet graphics card inside the MacBook Pro. I have a friend who also has the retina model of the same year with the graphics card and has the same issues. It is a Nvidia GT 750M.
Anyone know of a solution to this issues?

Quit All applications.
Hold the option key down and click "Go" menu in the menu bar.

  • HELP with Satellite Series - P305-S8837; displaying blank screen with cursor

Help! I have a the P305-S8837 laptop in the Toshiba Satellite Series. I have had the laptop for several months now and it's been working fine until now. I was using it this morning (on the internet) and it started freezing up and so I hit Crtl + Alt + delete and selected the option to restart. It restarted and asked which mode I wanted to start it up in (safe mode, safe mode w/networking, etc.) and I selected the normal option. It started out fine - little windows logo came on with the sound and then went into the Welcome Windows Home Vista premium page (that's like bluish greenish) and then afterwards the screen just goes blank with the exception of the mouse cursor. I let it sit for about an hour and there was no change. I have tried pressing the Crtl + Alt + delete and that has had NO affect. So i manually turned it off and then back on using the power button and tried starting it up in Safe mode w/networking and then just safe mode - both are able to get to the welcome screen but after that it's just a blank screen with cursor and it says safe mode and stuff on the border. Crtl + Alt + delete does not work in the safe mode w/networking but in just the regular safe mode it will go to that same screen that is the welcome and ask if I want to lock the computer, change users, start task manager or restart / shut down. I have selected the restart option and nothing happens and then the Crtl + Alt + delete option no longer works. I have tried manually starting the laptop with the battery unattached and just using the AC Adapter and that has had no impact. I have tried just using the laptop's battery only with no AC Adapter and that has had no impact.
As you can see, I am in desperate need of some assistance! Please tell me what to do!
    Thanks

Turn the computer on and immediately press and hold the F8 key.
On the Advanced Boot Options menu, choose Repair Your Computer.
When you reach the System Recovery Options menu, choose Startup Repair.
If that doesn't do the trick, go back to the System Recovery Options menu and do a System Restore.
If that doesn't fix things either, go back to the System Recovery Options menu, choose Command Prompt, and follow the directions here

  • Sometimes when I open my laptop back from sleep, I get a black screen with the cursor showing.

Recently I've been getting this weird problem where my macbook air will show a black screen with only the cursor visible that I can move around but nothing else can be done to get to the desktop. The only way is to close the lid and wait for around 10 or more seconds and then open the lid again to bring the laptop back from sleep and hope that the laptop goes to the lock screen and then to the desktop. This works often but sometimes the only solution seems to be to restart the laptop. This also happens when I tilt the lid to the point where it is almost closed and when I tilt it back the screen presents the above state. Theis has been happening often now and it is almost impossible for the above not to happen atleast 2 to 3 times a day. iThis is a relatively new problem that has been occuring since the past two weeks or so and never happened to me on my Macbook Pro 15 2011. My current system is a Macbook Air 11" 2013 Haswell 1.3 Ghz 4GB RAM 256 GB SSD. Now I dont want to have to send in my laptop if I dont have to if there is a way I can solve this myself. Anybody else have this problem?

    Hello tseten,
I would be concerned too if my MacBook Air was not waking from sleep appropriately.  For an issue like this, I recommend resetting your System Management Controller (SMC) and NVRAM.
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
Note: Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • When I click the View option to view a document on my insurance website, I only get a blank screen with words Mozilla Firefox, and below it, "Search Bookmarks and History" in the upper left corner of the screen.

This also happened at a bookseller's website, when I clicked on the photo of a book to enlarge it. Instead of showing me an enlargement, it took me to the same blank screen with the title bar, "Mozilla Firefox", and below it another bar with the words "Search Bookmarks and History," both at the top left of the screen. This has happened repeatedly at the two websites I have mentioned. When I went to the same sites using Internet Explorer, the error didn't occur. I did a Microsoft system restore for a previous restore point, but it still did not eliminate this glitch.

Press F10 or press and hold the Alt key down to bring up the "Menu Bar" temporarily.

  • Blank Screen with cursor after login Windows 7, Unable to start new tasks

My problem is similar to the well know Windows 7 Black Screen as referenced by Prevx, though different. When I boot my Windows 7 computer, the login screen appears as always. Following entering the password for default user,
the screen will give the impression of login, but the final result is a plain black screen with the cursor only. The black screen appears indefinitely and the Windows GUI never appears. The only available option from booting in normal mode with this is Ctrl-Alt-Del
(Task Manager). From analyzing another computer with Windows 7 Professional, my Task Manager is missing the following user processes: dwm.exe, explorer.exe, and taskhost.exe. Additionally, it is missing the following system processes (possibly irrelevant):
    spoolsv.exe and wmiprvse.exe.
When I attempt to start a new process using Windows Task Manager, an error message will appear saying “Windows Task Manager has stopped working” and forces you to close Windows Task Manager. This includes starting
any process such as cmd or explorer.
I attempted to boot into safe mode.
The result was the same as above. Then I attempted booting into safe mode with command prompt. This showed some hope. Following authentification from the login screen, the command prompt appears with the same blank screen with a cursor behind it. Initially
I attempted to run msconfig.msc to run a clean startup. System Configuration Utilities opens briefly then displays the error same as above. “System Configuration Utility has stopped working” and again forces the program to close. Then I tried to
open regedit. This works with no error messages! So I have access to the registry, but have no idea what I should modify to get my computer running normally.
    Things I have tried:
    1)
Restoring to last know good configuration. (No result)
    2)
    Repairing Windows configuration. (No result)
    3)
Scanning the drive 3 separate times for viruses with both Avast and Symantec. (No viruses detected)
    4)
Repairing the REG_SZ value HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Shell as proposed in
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itprogeneral/thread/5b94b775-992e-4f48-b3ff-c89b3cf45e82

Executing Prevx’s fix file as proposed in

    Any ideas are much appreciated.

  • Blank screen with cursor after logging in

After upgrading to Windows 8.1 from windows 8 (which took much much longer than a clean installation),on being prompted to log in, all I see is a blank screen (the cursor works though) after logging in. Upon doing a lot of googling, I am utterly confused
about the issue and its possible solutions. Can you give me a definite solution to this? The task manager opens via alt+ctrl+del, explorer.exe is not running and that sums up everything I can do with my swanky new Windows 8.1. The following are my

  • WDS Capture Image Blank Screen with Cursor

Hey everyone, happy Friday and Happy Sysadmin Day!
Not super happy for myself unfortunately! I'm having a problem with a Capture Image in WDS. I have a Sysprepped Dell 6440 running Windows 7 x64.I've created a Capture Image in WDS from a boot image with drivers injected and without drivers injected, but every time I boot from PXE, it gets to the windows loading screen, and then it just shows a blank screen with a cursor.I'm using Microsoft's OpenLicense ISO as a base for the boot.wimI can't find any solution that works. I've tried mounting and unmounting the WIM, restarting WDS, etc. This is getting really frustrating as I'm so close to having these images ready. The blank screen won't do anything, won't open a cmd with Shift+
F10 or anything. I've also tried booting on a different machine and it does the same thing.Any suggestions are...

  • HT201257 AHT - Blank screen with cursor, then gray screen, then shutoff

I have a mid-2009 MBP 13" with a mid-2010 motherboard (courtesy of warranty repair), and am running OS X Mavericks. When I attempt to use my original Applications Install DVD, I have the above issue. Attempting to install additional software in OS X leads to a "not installable" issue. Since the computer is older, the online AHT is of course, not an option. I would appreciate any thoughts on how I might run AHT.
    Thank you.

Correct, nothing with disc 1 or with no DVD and with disc 2, the black screen/cursor followed by a gray screen (not the same gray as a normal boot though) followed almost immediately by a power off.

  • "Washed out" screen after waking from sleep?

Over the past couple of months, when either waking from sleep or coming off the screen saver, the display has a washed out look to it. The colors can be restored by either reinitializing the screen saver or putting the computer to sleep and waking it back up again. I tried the PRAM and PMU resets with no success. The problem seems to be getting worse. (more frequent) Any ideas, suggestions would be appreciated.

hey, just adding my story to yours cause it seems to be a similar issue.
Every now and the when My MBP wakes from sleep or screensaver, the screen seems to lose its calibration, it gets all blueish. When I go to Display preferences to see what's there, the computer sort of recovers from the flaw and loads proper colors. I can almost her it say Oh yeah, color calibration!..

  • Mac Pro restarts instead of waking from sleep

Since installing 10.5.6, my 8-core Mac Pro (early 2008) has lost the ability to wake from sleep. It seems to go to sleep pretty quickly (if a little faster than before), but when I wake it up by pressing a key on the keyboard, I hear the Mac startup chime and watch as it restarts.
I've manually shut down and booted up a few times now, and the sleep misbehavior continues.
Anyone else? My 10.5.6 MacBook has no problems waking from sleep, only the tower.
    --Chris

Well, I thought this was resolved a couple of weeks ago after reading a suggestion that called for doing a controlled shutdown, then unplugging everything including power, waiting a minute, replugging only power, and starting up, using the power button on the front to sleep and wake up. It seemed to be waking instead of restarting, and was working normally for about three weeks.
As of today, I'm back to restarting when I try to wake. I have tried the unplug-everything trick again, and have zapped the PRAM multiple times (seriously, though, does that EVER work?). Nothing helps.
As mentioned above, I'm already on the BootROM version that EFI Update 1.3 provides, so that's not an option.
Thinking the next stop might be the Genius Bar, in hopes those guys have seen this.

  • 13" MBA screen blank after waking from sleep

I got a MBA very recently and noticed that if I shut the top and soon reopen it, the screen is totally blank except for the cursor.  Clicking and pressing keyboard buttons doesn't help bring me to the login screen.  Eventually the screen goes black and then goes to login if I click or press a button.  I already took it to the store and after close to 4 hours (they were extremely behind....5th ave store from 1230 -4 am!!) and resetting the laptop I was told to call apple care.  I called and after a while he told me I have to send it in for repair.  Does any one else experience this blank screen with a cursor after waking?
Ps  some want to blame chrome. My feeling was that if there's no known issue with chrome currently, there's no reason I should refrain from using it.

This happens every so often to my 12" Aluminium PowerBook after sleeping (black screen, hard drive spinning away) and after trying every possible key combination and nothing helping, I'm usually left with the usual last resort, which is a hard restart. Of course that remedies the problem short term but unfortunately, only until the next time it happens. For me, it has been an issue since I bought it and is not affected by the OS.
I am wondering if it has anything to do with the clasp not working properly when the lid is closed. Sometimes I get the sleeping light, sometimes not - unless I play with the lid until it clicks shut. Then the light appears. Importantly, when the sleeping light appears, the machine always wakes properly with the lid opening. But I have noticed that when the light does not come on and I haven't bothered to shut it down properly, that is when the problem occurs. Which makes me wonder if rather than going into sleep mode it is actually going into hibernation mode due to non use? I haven't a clue but perhaps someone here knows far more about such things than myself?

  • Monitor Blanks in and Out When Waking From Sleep

Since getting my Mac Pro (with Apple installed RAM and NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT), I've noticed that the screen does not immediately turn on when waking from sleep, as my older Macs did. Rather, it turns on for a split second, goes blank for two seconds, turns on again for a split second, goes off again for a second or more, and then comes on permanently.
This behavior only occurs when waking from sleep; it does not occur when the monitor turns on from the active screen saver.
Is this normal for the MAC Pro with an NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT? I have a HP w2408h monitor with a DVI to HDMI cable. Everything else works fine, including all video behavior.
    Thank you.

Hm. Bluetooth, interesting. Thanks for the idea.
I just opened the lid to see about the BT setting and the display didn't go off-on. The BT is off, I'm pretty sure I did that when setting it up as I don't use BT for anything.
I wasn't suspecting anything was seriously wrong, it's just that quick-on feature was highlighted as a selling point and I was curious about the glitch, if it was a setting I could change, for instance like you've highlighted. Annoying when things don't work as advertised.
And if I show the machine off to colleagues and friends, that will be a bad first impression they will want explained.

  • Macbook Air 2014 Black Screen w cursor after waking from sleep.

I just purchased a brand new macbook air this past week. I noticed within the first day of using that if my machine went into sleep mode, and I hit a key to take it out of sleep mode, it would go to a black screen with my cursor for about 30 seconds.
It does not do it every time but enough that it is annoying. I am coming from a mid 2011 mac air that did not have any issues. (only replaced for all day battery)
Do you think this a hardware or software issue? If i swap this mac out do you think I will just encounter the same thing?
I have read numerous posts regarding waking from sleep issues but they all seem to be affecting MacBooks purchased between 2012 and 2013.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Nick

    UPDATE:
I called apple tech support and after talking a bit decided best course of action was to replace the macbook air as I was inside my 14 day buyers remorse.
I came home and hoped all was well when this one began doing the same thing. I made an appt with the genius bar to dive further in to this and we did a complete wipe on the computer and reinstalled the OS. The "genius" said I'm probably bringing something over from my previous mac air. (even though it never had this issue).
So after completely reinstalling the OS and setting up my macbook as new I pretty much lost all my settings and what not accumulated after 3 years with my previous mac. They did use Time Machine to at least bring my iPhoto library over and iTunes music.
It has been exactly one day since this was completed and the computer is doing the exact same thing. ***!!!

  • Dark screen remains after waking from sleep mode

Whilst using Safari Version 3.1.2, Mac OS 10.4.11 on my Powerbook G4 (aluminum, 1.5 ghz), my screen remains dark upon waking from sleep mode. Trying to increase screen brightness is ineffectual for some reason likely related to this problem. My only workaround is to force shutdown and restart. Any ideas about a solution would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Gary,
This behavior is not a Safari issue but system related.
Close all applications an run in utilities> disc repair permissions.
After you done reboot an see what happens when your Mac gets to sleep mode again. This time don't open any applications to test it. Just leave it showing your desktop.
Post back with the results ...
