Waking from sleep problem since 10.4.6

Since the most recent software updates my revB 12" Powerbook has been shutting down rather than waking up when I jiggle the mouse/touch the trackpad to wake it from sleep. Any ideas?

Hi, Steve.
1. Are you sure it is shutting down (black screen) vs. returning to the Login Window? Some folks have confused the "Log out after __ minutes of inactivity" in System Preferences > Security with their computers having shutdown and restarted while they are away. Check this setting.
2. Did you leave it sleeping on battery power? Has the battery run down?2.1. You may need to re-calibrate the battery. See "Calibrating your computer's battery for best performance."
2.2. You may also want to install the Battery Update. If your computer does not require this update, the installer will inform you of such, so there's no risk in trying it.3. As general checks:3.1. Run the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified.
3.2. Run the Apple Hardware Test that came with your computer. See my "Apple Hardware Test" FAQ for comprehensive advice on using the Apple Hardware Test in troubleshooting, including running the test in Loop Mode.4. Are any peripherals attached, e.g. printer, scanner, etc.? If so, see if the behavior recurs with the peripherals detached. If it is well-behaved, then troubleshoot the peripherals by process of elimination.
Good luck!

  • Start up and waking from sleep problems. early 2011 macbook pro i-7 2.0

Been having problems with my computer starting up and waking from sleep.  If i shut the lid it wont wake up upon reopening the lid unless i hit the power button.  After hitting the power button it will restart automatically and you hear the chime and the cdrom ejecting , once the gray screen pops up it restarts again this time you hear the cd rom making the ejecting sound twice then it will start up as normal.  Once it finally starts up my date and time has been reset to jan 2008.  Other times when i open the lid hit the power button it does nothing at all.  Even holding the power button for multiple seconds to force shut down it does nothing.  Only way to get it to start up at that power is if i connect the charging cable.  I have tried reseting the smc multiple times with no results and pram(even though it doesnt have anything to do with start up problems just did it anyways).  It all started i last time i updated not completely sure what all updates i got but im still running 10.7.  It seems like a battery issue which would make sense since its nearly 3 years old and i use it extensivly.  Last thing that just started recently after i go threw the whole mess of getting it to start up if i pick it up or nudge it the thing will just shut off out of no where.  Almost like there is a short somewhere, cant really be sure if its linked with the waking up from sleep/start up problems but seems right up the same ally.  Any suggestions to what could be wrong would be greatly apreciated.  Im assuming my battery may be on its last leg but the thing still holds a charge and my battery life hasnt dimished at all so cant really be totally sure.  Thanks agian

Power or other problems related to unexpected system sleep, shutdown, lights or fans call for an SMC reset. It may not fix the problem but it would be the first thing an Apple Store would do if you were to bring it to them with this complaint.
If bumping the Mac causes problems it's an intermittent internal connection that the SMC reset is not likely to help.
    Read all the steps.
    Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if it's not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time. The power adapter indicator light will cycle off / on once.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • MBP after waking from sleep problem + new SMC update temperature

    Hi there!
    I have two issues:
    1. When I wanted to wake my MBP from sleep it asked me to enter the password and then all the screen went black. I could move my mouse cursor and chance sound volume but whichever key I pushed I had my screen "flashing" (like the option, flash when error or sth like that), any ideas what can cause this problem?
    2. Yesterday I installed new SMC update. Befere doing so my MBP was terribly hot, especially on the top bar near f keys, but the coreduotemp showed 45C, after installing SMC update it's all the time 65, which is exactly opposite to what people say here.
    Thanx

  • Macbook issues: waking from sleep & odd sounds

Hello, I've had my macbook for about three weeks now and have experienced this waking from sleep problem several times. Simply what happens is I open the lid and the screen turns on, but all that comes up is the rainbow coloured circle, has anyone else had this problem?
Also rarely when a sound is played like emptying the trash the speakers make an odd crackling noise, and after that if you mute the speakers you get no sound but still noise.
Finally where can I put in the suggestion for frontrow, I'd like to be able to play music in frontrow from my ipod when connected, you can get to shared libraries but not a conncted ipod :/
    Any help is appreciated!

happened again this morning, this time (though this has happened before) all usb ports become unuseable. the trackpad was still useable and i tried to reboot but the system froze.
this seems to happen mostly when its running on battery

  • Since updating to Lion the iMac won't recognise the external hard drive (maxtor) when waking from sleep mode,

Hi All, Since updating to Lion, my imac won't recognise the ext HDD (Maxtor) when waking from sleep mode, I have tried another port, diisc utility (Ext HDD not listed in here) but nothing works. I now find that I have to restart the imac to get the drive recognised..which is fine until the imac goes into sleep mode then I lose the drive and have to restart etc etc.....anyone suffering same issue.  The Ext Drive worked perfectly until the upgrade..

Thanks for this, and apologies for delay in replying...in between seeing your post I backed up the ext hdd to another mac and used the disc utility to erase and repair and then re mounted the ext hdd. OK.  I have then tested the ext hdd being recognised when waking from sleep mode a few times and everything appears to be fine. If this doesn't work (long term) I will follow the instructions as you have suggested....
I now have a new problem with my HP printer (Photosmart Plus) which is not being recognised by a new wireless router..Ok whilst the router is switch on and I have reconfigured the printer..but when the router is switched off overnight and then switched back on...I get a 'printer is not connected' message and have to go through the re configure routine all over. I am minded to think this is a router problem as the same issue is happening to my wifes Mac Book Pro (which is only a few weeks old)...any suggestions..

  • Freeze when waking from sleep since 10.4.11

Ever since updating to 10.4.11, My MBP locks up upon waking from sleep. It's the same problem I've had for months. The screen freezes and I get a spinning beach ball and the hard drive clicks. It usually happens when scrolling web pages in Safari, but it also happens at other times, but not as frequently. It happens a second time and the entire system seizes up. No crash log is generated. Anyone else seeing this?

I ran AHT and TechTool Deluxe 3.1.1 again and both reported no hard drive problems. I'm fully backed up and I'm calling Apple Care tomorrow. I'm concerned because I have one of the problematic Seagate hard drives; serial number and firmware match the troublemakers. Back over the summer, I called Apple Care about this and they suggested I rename my existing ~/Library/Preferences folder and restart to create all new pref files. This seemed to work for about two-three weeks.

Same here on an older iMac since Lion. Thanks for the uncheck wake for network access tip though, it doesn't do it either in that case, I will leave it that way.

  • OSX 10.9.1 macbook pro 13 retina - wifi does not reconnect automatically when waking up from sleep mode since I have a Bluetooth apple magicmouse

    Hello,
My config is OSX 10.9.1 new macbook pro 13 retina (2014).
The wifi does not reconnect automatically when waking up from sleep mode since I have a Bluetooth apple magicmouse.
It was not the case before I bought the BT mouse.
Is this problem between Wifi and bluetooth coming from the OS?
Is there a fix already available or scheduled?
    Thanks

    Hello alexandrefromfrance
Check the Symptom: The network connection drops unexpectedly section for steps on what to do when your MacBook Pro does not connect after waking from sleep. I have also quoted the section on troubleshooting the issue as well.
Wi-Fi: How to troubleshoot Wi-Fi connectivity
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4628
Symptom: After restarting or waking from sleep, my computer might not connect to the Internet
After waking from sleep or starting up, your computer may not show that it is connected to a Wi-Fi network.
After start or wake, your computer may indicate that it is connected to a network, but does not connect to the Internet.
    Solution
Use these steps if your computer does not automatically connect to your desired Wi-Fi network.
Check your TCP/IP settings in the Network pane of the System Preferences. Click the "Renew DHCP lease" button
Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu.
Choose Network from the View menu.
Select Wi-Fi, then click the Advanced button in the lower-left hand corner of the screen.
Click the TCP/IP tab from the top of the screen.
Click the "Renew DHCP lease" button.
Select the Wi-Fi tab and view your Preferred Networks list.
Select each network and click the minus sign to remove those networks from your Preferred Networks list.
Click OK and close the Network preferences.
Remove your stored network passwords using the Keychain Access Utility.
Open Keychain Access from /Applications/Utilities. Your window will look like this:
Remove your AirPort network passwords from the login keychain: Select the "login" keychain from the Keychain sidebar. Click the "Kind" column to order the list of keychain items by their type. Remove all entries of the kind: "AirPort network password".
Remove your AirPort network passwords from the System keychain: Select the "System" keychain from the Keychain sidebar. Click the "Kind" column to order the list of keychain items by their type. Remove all entries of the kind: "AirPort network password".

Note: The above steps will remove your Wi-Fi network passwords. If you do not know them, or if your network does not use passwords to restrict access, you should contact your network administrator.
    Restart your computer.
Join your Wi-Fi network. You will need to enter your password for your network again if it requires one.
    Regards,
    -Norm G.

  • Workaround for the problem of ultrabay HDD ejecting when waking from sleep

After trying every possible "solutions" with no luck for the problem of the second hard drive always ejecting/disconnecting when waking from sleep in my T530, I've decided to create my own workaround.
This is by no means a definitive solution but a nice workaround that uses little resources on the machine.
The idea is to simply let a program runs constantly from the second hard drive. That way, when the HDD tries to disconnect, Windows is not allowing it and then it stays allways connected.
To make it more thansparent I decided to create a Windows service that starts when Windows boot and stops when Windows shutdown.
This Windows service is very lightweight : it does absolutely nothing and just waits indefinitively.
The trick is that it just have to be started from the second hard drive.
Here is a link to the Windows service, 32-bit and 64-bit, with the source code and scripts to install/uninstall.
Just install it anywhere on the second hard drive (D: in my case).
    https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BxusNBl7tTO-Y3J5VDB3d2lQRzg/edit?usp=sharing
Works perfectly for me on my T530 with Windows 7 Pro x64.

Hmm, I have no problem with Ultrabay ejecting HDD when waking from sleep mode. At first, I went down the same
route as you did. For the first few days when I received my T530 I kept an .iso file from Ultrabay HDD always mounted.
But then I disabled all power saving options within Windows and Lenovo Power Manager and it seems to work fine.
Works both with Windows 8 (64-bit) and Windows XP Professional (32-bit).

  • Problem when waking from sleep

Hi all, my mbp has real problems when waking from sleep - I hear the dvd drive do something, the screen comes on but remains black, and then nothing else - no keys work, only holding the power button has any effect.
I have a screensaver password on.
Anyone heard of this before or have any ideas?
    Thanks!

  • Connection problems after waking from sleep????

I'm having a strange issue with my 2012 Macbook Pro running OSx v10.8. I take my computer with me between home and school, and I usually just put it to sleep during the commute. For the last few weeks, when I got to school and woke up my MBP, it wouldn't connect to the internet. It recognized the WiFi connection, but did not assign a valid IP address. It was only when I shut the computer down and rebooted it that I was able to connect. Strangely, when I got home, I had no problem connecting to my home network, even after waking up from sleep.
After a little while of this, it got worse. Now, even after re-starting, I am unable to connect at school. (WiFi icon shows exclamation point). This is also true for my home network.
Here's the kicker. When I log out of my default account and log into the guest account, I have no trouble either in school or at home. Waking from sleep is never a problem and I connect everywhere. However, as soon as I log back into my other account, I lose connectivity.
I have tried renewing my DHCP lease, or manually inputting an address, but neither of these have worked. I have resorted to using the guest account, and I want access to my old files again without having to switch back and forth.
If anyone has any input on this, it would be greatly appreciated!! Feel free to e-mail me at [email protected]
    Thanks!

    same issue here..
reset my network settings and reset phone a billion times already, same issue still occur. sometimes the phone will wake up with wifi and sometimes it will go to 3g, one time it went to GPRS, its just really bizarre. If i open safari it will ask if i want to join the network that i originally set up, but when i select the network it just says "unable to connect". If i just leave the phone be for a couple hours and wake it up again, it will rejoin the wifi network.
I use remote to control my music library, but if my phone goes to sleep, it won't reconnect again so it's basically useless.
    BIZARRRRRE, driving me crazy..

  • My zero Key isn't working after waking from sleep mode. This is a real problem for me because my password contains a zero

My zero Key isn't working after waking from sleep mode. This is a real problem for me because my password contains a zero.  I don't recall spilling anything or jamming it just that it worked before I closed the computer and wasn't after I woke it up.
I would like to fix the key but if that's not possible right away , Is there a way to reset my password without being able to type with a key thats in it?

Start by swapping the keyboard. You don't need to spend a fortune, and handy to have spare. USB cables can be bad even new.
When I had some problems Apple wanted to blame the mouse, keyboard, cable, but in the end I found
    A. run Disk Warrior
    B. Corrupt pref or conflict with version of Hardware Monitor and other background tasks

After waking from sleep, my MacPro 2x2.4 Quadcore Intel Xeon freezes in several applications that had been running before sleeping. Mail and Firefox both get into endless loops trying to download data and will not force quit. Pulldown restart and shut down do not function when this is occurring. Must shuyt down manually from box and start again. Everything works fine again until it goes to sleep again.

  • Lacie Speakers and Mac Pro Firewire problem waking from sleep and loud feed

Lacie Speakers and Mac Pro Firewire problem waking from sleep and loud feedback. I had a powermac before this with the speakers and it worked fine. But the mac pro is having these issues. Is it the firewire port or the speakers or (and most likely) just a firmware glitch with mac pro? Anyone else see these issues?

Here is my audio settings. For some reason I wish I could remember what I did. It was actually the Apple Store tech in the Unversity Village in Seattle that gave me the idea and I swear I had to change the settings in MIDI setup. Now that Leopard is out it seems the MIDI stuff has been redone. I included screenshots of my MIDI setup as it is currently to see if you see something different on your computers. Let me know!
