"Waking out of sleep" mechanical noise made but display still off...

Generally I put my Mac to sleep. For a while now, I would notice the Mac would make the mechanical "waking out of sleep" noise randomly (middle of the night lets say) as if it were coming out of sleep mode yet the screen wouldn't turn on. Any reason for this? I asked this question a week ago and didn't get answer. Any comment would be appreciated! Thanks!

Thanks to Apple my machine is working wonderfully well
New logic board and video card.
Thanks Apple !!!!

I always put my Mac to sleep. For a while now, I would notice the Mac would make the noise randomly (middle of the night lets say) as if it were coming out of sleep mode yet the screen wouldn't turn on. Only when I physically bring it out of sleep mode the monitor obviously turns on. Any reason for this? Thanks!

It seems I've seen a few posts about the Logitech drivers causing KPs recently. Try doing a search on "Logitech" for recent posts. I would do this for you, but the forums are running slow right now.

  • Why is Apple trying to phase out the 1st generation Apple TV, but they still sell shows, and movies?

Why would Apple continue to sell movies to people who won the 1st generation Apple TV,  while they are obviously trying to phase it out?  That is totally unfair to the original customers!  The upgraded remote only works with audio content, and not video!  If they are phasing it out, than they should no longer sell products to download to it!  Or when they upgrade their remote app, have it work with the item that you're still making money off of! Now, I have to turn on my computer in order to listen to music with the new upgrade, whereas I never had to do that before!

  • 5310 Power Save & Sleep Mode Off But Display Still...

I have a 5310, and I thought if I turned the Sleep mode or Power Saver Off the display would always stay on?
I want to keep the display on especially when I'm using the phone for the internet, email, or surfing, etc...
It's quite annoying that I constantly have to push keys to turn the screen on like every 30 seconds.
    THANKS

  • IMac turns on, but display is off

    Hi Everyone,
Last night I downloaded a couple of updates for windows after installing via boot camp. After the updates i shut the computer off from windows.
This morning I get up to turn on my iMac and i here the boot up sound, my mouse turns on, but my monitor wont turn on.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

    Hello
Well, this is a strange issue. Its not easy to say what the problem can be.
But first of all you should remove the battery and AC adapter for 1, 2 hours.
After this procedure use the power supply for the working test.
If the problem still valid, I assume that its a hardware malfunction.
In this case the best way is to contact the service partner.
    Best regards

  • Firefox starts up and shows up in the task manager, but displays only off screen. How can I make it display elsewhere? I have restarted and reinstalled to no avail.

    Nothing to add here.

This page will position the Firefox window at the upper left of your display (assuming you haven't disabled JavaScript):
    http://dev.jeffersonscher.com/jstest.html
If Firefox is your default browser, you can load that page by clicking the Windows "orb" on the task bar and pasting it into the "Search programs and files box", then press Enter or click the result with the Firefox icon next to it.
I don't have a dual monitor setup, so I don't know whether it works in that case.

  • MacBook Pro comes out of sleep mode while lid is closed

    Hey guys,
I have a MacBook Pro that is slightly over a year old. I'm running Leopard 10.5.5, and I have a strange problem where the computer comes out of sleep mode while the lid is still closed. This happens without any USB plugs being inserted or removed. Basically it just comes out of sleep (I can tell because I can hear the hard drive spin up as well as the noise the cd-drive makes when it's woken up), then it seems to realize that the lid is still closed and goes back to sleep. This used to happen somewhat infrequently, but I got fed up when this happened today about 10 times in a row as I was trying to study for an exam.
I have applecare so I'm not worried about having to take it in, it's just a strange, annoying problem. I have not been able to find anything from searching google or the help forums, so if anyone knows what could be causing this and how I can fix the problem it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

I did as you said, and I think I found the perpetrating program. It showed:
    "11/28/08 11:41:24 PM [0x0-0xb90b9].com.apple.Safari[1261] Fri Nov 28 23:41:24 Macintosh-37.local Safari[1261] <Error>: Invalid JPEG file structure: SOS before SOF\n"
Any idea what this means? The only other thing that showed up as an issue was:
    "11/28/08 11:42:16 PM iCal[1267] * Assertion failure in -[CoreEventResizeTracker mouseUp:sender:], /SourceCache/iCal/iCal-1270/iCal/src/calendar-views/x-days/CoreEventCreationTra cker.m:697"
    or
    "11/29/08 12:19:34 AM com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.backupd-wake[1287]) Exited with exit code: 1"
I have no idea what this means, so if anyone can shed some light on it it would be very much appreciated.

  • System locks up coming out of sleep/hibernate

    Hi,
We have three Latitude E6430 notebooks running Windows 7 Enterprise x64. This is a licensed copy from MS and has not been customized in anyway by us. All three systems have the exact same configuration. Two of these systems lock up when we try to resume
from sleep or hibernation. The logon prompt comes up but we are unable to enter the password or move the pointer around. The system has to be hard rebooted to get it functioning again. The third notebook that does not exhibit this issue has graphics driver
v8.15.10.2639 but those same drivers do not resolve the issue on these two systems. We have tried updating the BIOS, chipset and graphics drivers but issue persists. Tried different graphics driver versions (from Dell support site and Intel) but no go. Dell
sent motherboard and processor replacement for one of the systems but issue was not resolved. For testing, Dell tech support asked their engineer to install the OEM copy supplied by Dell (Windows 7 Professional x64) and the issue was not noticed. We then
installed our Enterprise copy and issue's immediately back again.
Issue occurs irrespective of how sleep/hibernate is triggered: manual, automatic (timed) or lid closure.
Issue occurs irrespective of power source, AC power or only battery.
Issue occurs even if lid close action is set to 'Turn Off Display' only.
However, if hibernation is disabled the issue does not occur. System could be in sleep or with only the display turned off for hours and it still responds normally after waking up as long as hibernate is disabled.
    All three systems have,
Intel Core i7-3540M Processor (Dual Core, 4M Cache, 3.0 GHz, w/HD Graphics 4000)
    8GB (2x4GB) 1600MHz DDR3L Memory
    500GB Solid State Hybrid Drive
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks, Muggy

    Hi,
After waking form hiberbation, have you tried to unplug the mouse then re-plug it back in for a test. Meanwhile keep the latest drivers for the the mouse and keyboard.
And untick this option: Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power in device manager\mouse and keyboard device\properties\power management.

  • HP Officejet Pro 8500 - won't go to "sleep" anymore / occasional mechanical noise

    Hi-
I have a HP Officejet Pro 8500 all-in-one wired network printer.  Until recently, it used to go into a "sleep" type mode where the screen would go blank and I assume it would entered some sort of power saving mode.  Recently, it has stopped doing that.  It doesn't every go into sleep mode now, and every 15 mintues or so, it makes a mechanical noise like the moving portion  of the printer is cycling briefly on and off.
I don't necessarily care that it doesn't go to sleep, but what concerns me is that the print head "cycling" (for lack of a better term) occuring over and over, every day, for months on end will eventually lead to wear and tear and failure.  Is there any way to "force" the printer to go to sleep, or somehow set it up so that it goes into some sort of "sleep" mode after XX amount of minutes?
    Thanks!

That is an odd problem, for the most part and like me I am having the exact opposite problem. Once it goes into sleep mode my printer will not even wake up I have to reboot the whole thing. I would say try going and enabling the energy saving mode again and see if that helps.

  • My dropped Macbook plays a five note song three times and on the third time, the last note drops in pitch like it is dying. I have not shut it off, but it does this coming out of sleep mode. Can't find any references to this. Anyone know what's happening?

  • High power comsumption and wrong setting when waking up from sleep

See here for some more information: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Windows-7-RTM-Discussion/High-Power-Consumption-with-Windows-7/td-p/1668...
Settings: T400, integrated GPU,"maximum battery live" power sheme, brightness level 3, wlan on. Newest switchable graphics driver, power manager and power management drivers installed, SU4 didn't find newer drivers.
Power consumption is between 12-16W most of the time, whereas it was close to 10W on XP, from what i heard from a friend, i installed win7 on my machine right after i bought the thinkpad.
When waking up from sleep( i think hibernation as well) power consumption is abnormal, because both GPUs are activated. You have to switch to to the dedicated and back to the integrated via power manager to deactivate the ATI, which is very annoying.
Is lenovo working on these issues or are there any workaroungs already?

I've got similar problems on a T400 with hybrid graphics running Windows 7 x64 Professional, upgraded from Vista x64 Professional. I've upgraded everything to the latest (driver, bios, etc etc) using System Update.
When I boot up from cold, and switch to using batteries, the power consumption is around 8w. Very good.
Then I suspend, and resume from suspend, and the power consumption shoots up to like 20w. Horrible.
Then I manually switch to "High performance" and then back to "Energy saving", the power consumption comes back down, but to >9w, which is like 13% above the original 8w level. Acceptable, but not good.
This seems to indicate there're at least two problems with the power management aspect of T400 + Win7 x64:
First, there is the well-known problem that both internal and external graphics cards get turned on upon resume. Lenovo, please fix this problem. It's completely unacceptable to have to manually perform that switching every time one closes, and then opens the lid, or loss 60% of the battery life.  And I do need to use the external GPU from time to time, so disabling it at BIOS level is not acceptable either.
Second, there is the more subtle problem that some other hardware/driver besides the graphics card makes the T400 draw an extra >1w upon resume.
I really wonder if these problems occur with T400 preinstalled with Win7 x64. If they do, shouldn't every major laptop review sites take notice of the defect and warn people. If they don't, then I do not really see why it's so hard for Lenovo to provide earlier users with the right driver/registry patch/etc to enable the correct behavior. As far as I know, these problems have not been fixed since Win7 came out.
Finally let me add that other that this, I'm extremely satisfied with my T400/Win7 system. The thermal dissipation, noise level, and durability are just top-notch. But this just makes the above mentioned problems more of a thorn in the side!

  • Why does my iMac display go off when I am starting up or waking up my machine from sleep..

Why does my iMac display go off when I am starting up or waking up my machine from sleep..?
When my iMac goes to sleep I then later try to click the magic track pad or keyboard and it will usually then show the initial password entry login screen and then go off. The machine is still on but the display is black and will sometimes flash up the screen again if I press the magic track pad or keyboard but will then black out again..

Well, there are many different reasons why it does this. It might shut off due to power voltage problems, system overheats, or there is a System Problem. The reason it might be hard to boot up is because your power button might not work properly or your system hard drive is damaged.

  • Difficulty coming out of sleep

very new mac mini using 30 cinema display
quite often the system will have a difficulty waking up from sleep
key strokes seem to do nothing
short pressing of the mac mini power button sometimes wakes it up
    sometimes this requires several attempts
then...often, but not always....the login password field already has a lot of keystroke asterisks in it (from attempts to wake the system) so, at some point it has awoken, but the monitor has not come back on, i guess
everything was restored from a time machine backup made on a macbook pro that is currently being repaired

the keyboard is plugged into a 30 in cinema display
OK, so one thing to try is plugging the keyboard directly into the mini.
yes, am using a switched power strip
Just to be sure, I'm talking about something a little fancier than a power strip with a switch on it. There are power strips on the market now that have a low energy feature where they actually shut off "slave" outlets based on the current draw through the "master" outlet. So if the main component on the master is switched off, all the other connected devices are also switched off through their AC inlets by virtue of their connection to the switched outlets on the power strip. A sleeping mini's current draw will be so low that it would trigger the slave devices on the power strip to all be shut off. Just wondering if you have something like that.

  • CD Eject sound when MBP comes out of sleep

Perhaps this is typical - I'm a new convert from the PC world. But the only thing that I don't like about my new MBP is that the CD drive (when empty) makes the CD eject noise every time the machine comes out of sleep. Is this typical? What's it trying to accomplish? Is there any way to disable this behavior?
    Any insight would be welcomed.
    thanks,
    Pete

Yes it's normal. It is the behaviour of the Matshita (Panasonic) drives as they are powered, which is what happens when you boot and wake from sleep. Unfortunately there's nothing you can do about it.

  • Restricted users don't rejoin AirPort out of sleep

Since I set up my new Mac, I've had a problem with Airport and security settings. If I come out of sleep if logged on as an admin user, the Mac joins my Airport network. If I come out as a restricted user (a kid), it asks for an admin user and password.
The Network is set to "By default, join Preferred Networks" and I have only one preferred network. The network is there. There's no WEP or WPA or other password required. (I use MAC address filtering). It happens whether or not the Options are set to "Require administrator password to [ ] Change wireless networks."
This has been a problem since the first time I setup the users. The article below claims it's a problem with old releases but I have the latest release.
I've been a Mac users for 20 years and an OS X user for 3. Any ideas?
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301530
Mac OS X 10.4: AirPort may not rejoin network on wake or restart
    Symptom
Some computers, after upgrading to Mac OS X Tiger 10.4, may no longer automatically join a wireless network after waking from sleep or restarting.
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

On the screen where you are being asked for the password, click the triangle by Details and note down what the requested right is. From here, use an application such as TextWrangler to open the /private/etc/authorization file, search for instances of that right, and if possible, modify the file so that non-admin users have that specific right. If you're not sure what to do, post back with the requested right for instructions. General information about the setup is available in another thread.
