Waking up display from display sleep

This is a minor thing, but I'm curious. On my MBP, I have my display set to sleep after 15 minutes of non-use. The MBP itself never sleeps.
Before upgrading to Lion I could wake up the display by touch the trackpad, or moving the magic mouse.
After upgrade, the only way I can wake the display seems to be by pressing the spacebar.
Is there a way to have the display wake up in response to trackpad/mouse touching like before?
Thanks,
doug

Sorry, igmackenzie, but the OS X documentation (for all previous versions, not updated yet for Lion) says otherwise:
Display sleep: When display sleep occurs, the display will go black, but running applications remain active. If your display has a power indicator, it may change to indicate that the display is in a low-power mode. To wake the display, simply move the mouse, touch the trackpad, or press a key on the keyboard.

You seem to be suggesting that Apple has proof that all cats know they must avoid running over keyboards and instead only run over mice or trackpads
I can confirm for a fact that no-one explained this to my sister's cat, as I recently spent the better part of an hour helping her to undo her cat's keyboard-dancing fun.
I remain of the firm belief that this is a bug that needs fixing. The swipe of a trackpad to awaken from sleep is a very much more intuitive and easy way to go about things - you swipe to the hot corner to sleep it, you swipe it again to awaken it. Simples.

  • MBP15 Retina: Cant wake from Display Sleep

I've bought my MBP15 with Retina a week or two ago.
You know how your display turns off after a minute of leaving you Mac idle?
When I touch the trackpad or any key on the keyboard to log back in, the display turns back on for 1 second, then goes black again.
It continues to do this everytime I touch a key or the trackpad. Turns back on for 1 second, then turns off again. I can't log in, and have to force-shutoff the Mac to get back in.
This is very unfortunate, as I'm from Guatemala. We don't have Apple Stores here. So I can't just walk in and get it serviced.
Anyone has a solution? I've already done a permission fix on the Disk Utility, to no avail.
+ If I close the lid to make it sleep, then open it up again, it turns back on no proble. It's only when the display sleeps.
    Thanks so much everyone.

    Hi Nikolaus
I have the same issue. Having got myself in the habit of a quick swipe across the Magic Trackpad to reawaken my external 27" display from display sleep, this bug is very annoying. It happens for me when connected to AC power, so the problem is not restricted to running off battery power.
I shall report this as (another) Lion bug here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
Please feel free to add your own complaint, too - the more the merrier

  • Not detecting external display after waking up MBP from sleep mode

I am a recent owner of a MBP and enjoying it. However, one problem that I can't seem to find a solution to is the external display problem after sleep mode.
When I first boot up the Mac and plug in my Dell external monitor via the mini adapter, there is no problem with detection or display. However, every time I put the MBP in sleep mode and then wake it up again, the external monitor does not "wake" up and my MBP only displays my normal screen on the Mac.
I tried to 'Detect Displays' to no avail and the only solution is unplugging the mini connection and plugging it back into the MBP for the MBP to re-detect the external monitor.
Although this is a quick fix in itself, I do not want to wear out the mini port by doing this every timeI come out of sleep mode. Any solutions so that the external monitor will detect the MBP waking up from sleep and display properly? Thanks!

    And same problem here.
Using a MBP 2.66 i7 with a Dell 3008WFP that's connected to the MBP through DisplayPort. It works some of the time but once in a while (only been using the new MBP for a couple of days now) the monitor won't come out of sleep mode. Turning it off/on causes OS X to completely ignore the monitor. I was able to get this setup to work again by pressing 'Detect Displays' in the System Preferences pane but most of the times that doesn't help. The only sure way to get the monitor working again is by booting into Windows through Bootcamp, Windows is able to use the monitor, if I reboot after that OS X sees the monitor again.
Also saw a magenta line/stripe on the left side of my monitor and the monitor sometimes makes a buzzing sound when connected to the MBP through DisplayPort. That's what you get by using bleeding edge tech I guess :\ Only alternative is buying the mini-DP to dual-DVI connector but paying $99 just to be able to use an external monitor is rather insane. Besides that lots of users are having problems with this adapter.

  • External display issues when waking display from sleep

After waking my external display from sleep (the entire Macbook was not asleep, just the external display), the garbled colored dots kept appearing at the top and bottom of the screen, only then for the entire display to go black, then about 5-10 seconds later the images comes back, but with the garbled colored dots at the bottom. It will keep doing this over and over again.
It's only happened once so far, but I seem to remember reading about some issues when waking from sleep with the new unibody Macbooks with regards to external displays. Is this a known issue with these Macbooks?

There have been similar reports. However, not all external displays in combination with a MacBook will exhibit this problem. Thus, it seems either display specific or something that is caused by a cross between one display and a MacBook.
I assume that you are using one of Appe's mini DisplayPort to DVI adapters to connect to the external display. In that case have you installed the latest firmware update for the adapter?

  • Display issues (application placement and background) when waking from lcd sleep

I hve three DVI displays connected to my Mac Pro running Lion.  I regularly put my displays to sleep using a hot corner to lock my workstation.  This was not a problem in Leopard or Snow Leopard; however, in Lion I have noticed several issues upon waking the workstation from sleep.
-One of the LCDs will have a grey backgroud instead of the wall paper set for it.
The lcd with the grey background seems to be determined by which lcd I place the dock in.
The background will come back if I logout, reset, or move the dock to a different screen
-The applications will not be located on the screens they where on when I put the displays to sleep
Sometimes they are all on one display or distributed across two displays (this is most common)
Rarely the applications will not be on the correct displays and they will have been resized.
I'm liking OSX Lion so far, but having to repeatedly fix these problems is becoming a serious pain.  I have updated to the latest patch for OSX 10.7, but that did not change anything reguards to these problems.  Does anyone know how to solve these problems?

Matteo : I guess it is a good sign that only 2 of us have reported this minor glitch here . . . I may experiment with switching to a different desktop pattern and / or screen saver to see if it persists . . . also, since installing SL I have only done Sleep and of course restarts after getting the 10.6.1 update and a few others so I need to do an actual Shut Down and later start up fresh and see what happens.

  • Display will not sleep any more after waking from sleep

My Macbook has recently started misbehaving after waking from sleep. Started putting the entire MB to sleep each night by closing the lid. When I wake it in the morning everything seems normal, no error messages. However from that point forward the display will not dim or sleep. I've tried re-applying my settings in System Preferences -> Energy Saver. Pretty much the only fix has been to reboot, which is annoying and Windows-like.
In the interest of full disclosure, I have "fast sleep" enabled (aka hibernation mode disabled) but I've had that since I bought my MB with 10.5.1 on it. So I don't think it's related. In fact I changed to the default Energy Saver profile to see if that fixed the problem (it didn't), which re-enabled hibernation mode and I then had to re-disable hibernation.
I want to say this started happening after the 10.5.4 update, but that may have been a coincidence as to when I started sleeping it each night... I don't exactly remember.
I downloaded Cocktail to run all the cron jobs, etc, that don't get run when sleeping at night, and that didn't help either.
Any suggestions? Anyone else ever see this? Seeing it now?
    Thanks!

This is still an issue for me.
I sleep my Macbook every night by closing the lid. After doing this a few times, the display either stops sleeping, or stops locking. I have the lock menu in the Apple menu bar, and even selecting "Lock screen" will not work.
Sometimes a reboot fixes it, sometimes I have to reset the SMC.
    Any info out there?

  • IMac always auto detects for external monitors after waking from sleep or from display off

I've got a Dell 24" monitor (2408WFP) plugged into my mid 2011 iMac via DVI cord and thunderbolt attachment. Things work fine.
When I need to leave my computer, I usually turn the displays off using the shortcut keys: CTRL + SHIFT + EJECT
This works perfectly and both displays go black. However, when I return to my computer and reactivate the iMac, the iMac display will turn blue as if I have just plugged in a new monitor even the external monitor is still plugged in. It usually flashes blue twice before displaying the password prompt. I can usually just log back in as normal. I've never had this happen before using Snow Leopard. It's annoying but strange.
However, even more strange is that sometimes when returning to the desktop, the iMac will do the auto detect display thing and then when I log back in, the external display just shows static as if there is no signal. I've checked the cable a million times and everything is as tight as tight can be and both ends are plugged in properly. Unplugging the displayport adapter from the iMac and then reattaching it restores the desktop on the secondary display although sometimes, it results in the secondary display showing a gray background picture instead of my normal picture. Replugging the secondary display seems to fix that too although sometimes it doesn't.
    Why is this happening?
    - Problem with the adapter?
    - Problem with the DVI cable I'm using?
    - Compatibility issues with my external monitor?
I need to stress the point that this has never happened before with Snow Leopard.
If I am the only one experiencing this then I suppose it may be an issue with the iMac or adapter or even the cable. But if anyone else can shed light on this problem, I'd really appreciate it.

    Hi Micheal,
I've been experiencing the exact same issue with my new iMac I just bought.  I bought it refurb so I wasn't sure if it was a defect with the hardware or not.  Since I'm not the only one I will asume it's not for now.
    Setup:
    - iMac 27-inch 3.4GHz (Release May 2011)
    - Dell 2709W external monitor
    - Hooked in with mini display port to DVI adapter
    - Lion 10.7.3 all up to date to this day
From what I've been able to gather the issue presents itself only when my Dell 2709W enters "Power Save Mode" after I do CTRL + SHIFT + EJECT or when the diplays simply goes to sleep by themselves.
Although if I hit that combination and the displays goes to sleep but I don't wait long enough for my Dell monitor to actually "Power Save Mode" (wait like 2 sec) then touch the keyboard then the 2 displays (iMac and Dell) resumes from sleep without the issue presenting itself.
I'm tempted to buy the mini-display port to HDMI just to see if the issue is still present with that adapter.  If I do I'll update my post with the outcome.
If anyone else has any info to help with this issue it would be greatly appreciated.  It's very annoying when you resume from sleep and you find all of your windows that where opened on the external display before sleep squeezed into your main display (iMac).
    Thanks!

  • 27 inch iMac to hang during waking from display sleep

Every morning when I come to work and try to wake my imac from display sleep (not full mac sleep) it will freeze.
    the freeze goes like this:
the screen is dark and I press the space bar to wakr the screen.
it will show the desktop and folders just as I left it but after 10 seconds the screen starts to populate with pinkish graphic squares - imagine the old space invaders graphics - this will get worse and will eventually freeze.
the freeze will happen quicker if I try to open up a folder or application.
I can restart the mac and it will freeze again - I can usually restart 3 or 4 times before I can eventually get the mac to work fine.
If I leave the mac for an hour during the day for a meeting say and on the return it will freeze when I try to wake the screen.
Spoke with Apple technical support who say reinstall software or try swopping user account - the problem I have with this is it will take me half a day to get the applications back to how I like it before I can start working and I dont have this time.
I wonder if its a hardware problem but it passes the tooltech diagnostics fine
I have a screen grab if that helps
    Any ideas?

Contact Apple Service, iMac Service or Apple's Express Lane. Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine.

  • External Display doesn't wake from display sleep

My display is set to sleep after an idle period (computer itself set to not sleep), when I return to the computer and wake the displays the external display most of the time does not "wake" or come back with picture. I need to disconnect the adapter and plug it in again.
    Anyone else experiencing this?

    Guys, please read THIS thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1760586&tstart=0
EVERYONE is experiencing this bug if you're using your new MacBook Pro with an external display. In the thread above, I detail how to fix it without having to unplug the DisplayPort adapter.
    The symptoms you're experiencing are:
1.) Bizarre interference all over the external display when either a) waking your notebook from sleep, or b) turning screen on if the screen is set to turn off after x minutes.
2.) External display not actually turning on at all after either a) waking your notebook from sleep, or b) turning screen on if the screen is set to turn off after x minutes.
The fix is listed in the above thread. It's only a temporary workaround, and Apple REALLY needs to address this issue ASAP.

  • Cannot wake from display sleeping freezes up

I just did a HD upgrade on my 24" imac 2.16ghz to a 1TB drive. All went well as I have done several others and I also switched from 10.4.11 to 10.5 and updated to 10.5.8 with no issues. I have a problem with it waking back up when the display goes to sleep, first it comes up to an all black screen with nothing on it at all and then it comes up to a frozen image of the screen saver with a spinning beach ball. No matter how long it sits it stays there unless I hold the power button to turn it off and restart it. I also was running 10.5.8 prior to this in an OWC external enclosure with the same brand/model 1TB drive and it did it with that too but I attributed that to it being an external drive. Any ideas???

  • MBP (early 2009) won't wake from Display Sleep

My MBP has started to not wake from Display Sleep (the machine is not sleeping, only the display). The only way to get it back is to force power off by holding the power button down.
The weird thing is, when I power it on, it shows the 'loading RAM from disk' progress bar down the bottom of the all grey screen, as if the battery ran out. But I have it connected to a power source. Once it loads the RAM, the screen goes blank and it hangs. Another force restart and it boots to the login screen as per normal.
One thing I have noticed is that when this all happens (ie, when I try to wake it and nothing happens) the fans are on about medium speed and its very warm, as if there is some process thats causing high CPU usage and preventing the display waking. I usually have a few browsers open, iTunes, etc, nothing out of the ordinary.
I might try connecting via screen sharing next this happens to see if its responsive over the network -- i'll post my findings here.
I have screen saver with password protection turned on, and its connected to an external apple display.
    Has anyone else experienced this?

    Try a SMC reset.

I cant figure out how to keep the display from going black on me when I am connected to my lcd tv and am watching movies through the macbook pro. You've tried setting System Preferences > Energy Saver > Sleep tab > "Put the display(s) to sleep... to "Never" - all the say to the right?
If nothing else, you can use a 3rd party app like Jiggler to keep the display active:

  • Problem Awakening Display From Sleep

I just bought my first Apple last saturday,an iMac 17".Here`s my problem, I set up the display to sleep after 5 minutes.Right after it goes to sleep, if I move the mouse the display will turn on again OK,however, once again the displays goes to sleep, if I leave it alone for a long period of time (say a couple of hours) if I move the mouse to awake the display, the display remains dark blue.I can see the cursor, but nothing else.I`ve tried pressing keys, clicking the mouse, anything to awaken the computer,to no avail.
I`ve also made sure that in preferences, the computer is "never put to sleep".I did though, checked the box that says "put the hard disk to sleep when possible",thinking that one thing did not affect the other.
    Or is it?
Ultimately, I had to resort to shutting down the computer (pressing and holding the power button for 5 seconds) and the starting it up again.
My operating system is up to date,so this is not the cause of this bug.
Does anyone have the same problem?

  • Display won't sleep after upgrade to 10.4.4

I ran the update to 10.4.4 today and now my display will not sleep. Since then, I have:
    1. Ran the fix permissions utility
    2. Restarted, zapped p-ram
    3. Deleted the preference file in /Library/Preferences that houses the energy saver configuration, then reconfigured.
Any other ideas? I did not change any of my settings after running the updater and this had been working fine since purchasing the computer.

A number of sleep-related issues can appear after incremental Mac OSX updates, including the inability to properly go to sleep, problems waking from sleep, and having your display go to sleep without your Mac going to sleep. The most common culprit is Bluetooth. Try these tips to fix your sleep problems.
    WAKE UP
In System Preferences>Bluetooth, uncheck Allow Bluetooth Devices To Wake This Computer. If you are using a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, you'll have to wake your Mac by pressing the power button.
    FILE CORRUPTION
Your Bluetooth preference file may be corrupt-you'll need to delete it. Turn Bluetooth off, then go to the /Users/user name/Library/Preferences folder. Look for a file called com.apple.Bluetooth.plist and trash it.The OS will create a new preference file when you enable Bluetooth again.
    ENERGY SAVER
If you have issues with a Mac or display that goes to sleep at inappropriate times, you may have a problem with Energy Saver. Delete the following .plist files and restart:
    -/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
-/Users/username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist--(username is your name or System Administrators name).
    -/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist
A restart is very important after deleting these plists. After a reboot your Mac will then generate new ones.
In some cases, running MacOS X's cron tasks-maintenance that the OS performs automatically if you leave your Mac on 24 hours a day-can resolve many sleep problems. If you don't want to leave your Mac on, you can use MacJanitor, Yasu, or OnyX free at Versiontracker.com.
Some, in these forums, have had luck fixing sleep issues downloading the Combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try.
Yours would be the 10.4.4 Combo update. Others reading, download the combo update that applies to you!
    Cheers!
