Wall Street Journal article on Linux

Today's Wall Street Journal (Aug. 8, 2005) has a page one article on Linux in its Marketplace section.  The article concentrates on the prospects for Linux running enterprise servers for large companies.  As you'd expect, the article mentions Red Hat and Novell (and, sorry, no mention of Arch).  The author takes an evenhanded look at the pros and cons of open source software from a company's perspective.  Prominent, of course, are the potential savings Linux offers to companies, counterbalanced by support issues.
Those of you with an interest in this sort of thing might want to take a look.

Ordinarily, I'd be delighted to provide a transcript or scan.  However, the Wall Street Journal is extraordinarily intense about their copyrights, and I'd be exposing this group to some risk if I posted a significant part of the article.  I can email the article to a restricted group of individuals, so those of you who do not have access to the paper at work, home or a nearby library, email me at [email protected] and I'll collect the emails and send out the article.  I think I can safely do this for about 10 emails.  Hope this works for you.

Is it possible to have VoiceOver read news articles such as are published on the Wall Street Journal app?

Yes per the iPod users guide

If the it is real text and not an image.

  • On the Wall Street Journal website, I am not able to print out of the print format. Never had a problem before with this.

I click on the print icon under an article in the Wall Street Journal. A new window opens with the article in print format. When I print, I get blank paginated pages equaling the length of the article. On the top left hand corner of the page will appear the title of the article; on the top right hand corner will appear the web address of the article; on the bottom left hand corner will appear the pagination; and on the bottom right hand corner will be the date and time of the printing. This is just how any article would print; the only difference being that I'm not getting the content of the article printed.
This has only started a couple of days ago. I do not have this issue with any other publication, yet this problem doesn't exist with other browsers.

I don't have a WSJ account to test... Here is some general advice:
When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.
    (1) Bypass Firefox's Cache
Use Ctrl+Shift+r to reload the page fresh from the server.
Alternately, you also can clear Firefox's cache completely using:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced
On the Network mini-tab > Cached Web Content : "Clear Now"
If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.
    (2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site:
    * right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
    * Alt+t (open the classic Tools menu) > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
This will open a window listing the site's cookies, which you can remove individually.
Then try reloading the page and logging back in. Does that help?

  • A magazine's app on my iPad has stopped working.  When I open the Newsstand folder and click on the app, the screen dims briefly, then returns to the Newsstand folder. The other app in my Newsstand folder (Wall Street Journal) opens without any problem.

A magazine's app on my iPad has stopped working.  When I open the Newsstand folder and click on the app, the screen dims briefly, then returns to the Newsstand folder. The other app in my Newsstand folder (Wall Street Journal) opens without any problem, and this magazine's app opens just fine on my wife's iPad.
I have deleted the app and reinstalled it from the Apple store and that makes no difference.  I have also done a hard reboot on my iPad with no result.
Any thoughts about what might be wrong?

    Hey everyone in Apple world!
I figured out how to fix the flashing yellow screen problem that I've been having on my MBP!  Yessssss!!!
I found this super handy website with the golden answer: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
I followed the instructions on this page and here's what I did:
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
I went through the 6 steps above twice, just to make sure I got rid of whatever stuff was holding up my bootup process.  Since I did that, my MBP boots up just like normal.  No flashing yellow screen anymore!!
(Note that I arrived at this solution when I first saw this page: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570?viewlocale=en_US)
Let me know if this works for you!

  • Wall Street Journal iPhone App 1.1

    Hi,
I downloaded & installed the "Wall Street Journal iPhone App 1.1" yesterday but I can't get it to work. It starts up, but shuts down after a few seconds.
    Any Ideas out there?

I had a similar problem with WSJ app today. I turned off my wifi, connected via 3G, let the app do it's update of data, ended the app, turned wifi back on, and everything has been working fine since then. This seems to happen if I don't launch the app at least daily to update the data; don't know why it's happier updating over 3G versus wifi, but at least it works.

  • Wall Street Journal app not working, have reset once?

I have a problem with the Wall Street Journal app.  Once it is open and I turn the page, I get subscription notice, which locks up the program.  And yes I have a subscription.  I have done a hard start and loaded the app again.  Please advise?

If you are having a problem with only the Wall Street Journal app, and all other apps are working correctly, the problem may be with the Wall Street Journal.  Is this the only app you're having a problme with?

First, we are not Apple, we are other users like you trying assist with hardware problems.  We cannot help with warranty issues.
Unfortunately, Apple cannot and will not help you unless your iPhone is returned to the US (in person, not by international mail).  The warranty is not international.  This topic has been discussed on this forum since before the 5s was released.  Please tell all of your friends not to buy an iPhone in another country unless they are willing to forego warranty and service from Apple.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

  • Flash Player no longer plays Wall Street Journal feeds

    I have version 10,0,22,87 installed on my OS X 10.5.6. I just
installed it today. Now none of the Flash feeds on the wall street
journal site work. I am using Firefox, but Flash also does not work
    in Safari.
    http://online.wsj.com/home-page?_wsjregion=na,us&_homepage=/home/us
    What did you break?
In general, it is very hard to debug anything in Flash. You
need some sort of debug option.

I am also having this exact same problem and it is infuriating. And I am not seeing a quick download links to the previous version unless it was the last major version change and I don't want to go back that far. I am using a Creative Titanium X-fi PCI-e sound card with a Sandybridge chipset (2700k). My sound works fine in anything that isn't flash and I have also tested in multiple browsers.

  • HT204088 I had a 1 month trial subscription to the Wall Street Journal. I do NOT wish to renew. When I go to the "subscription" screen, it shows after 1 month, another 1 month for #12.95 (I believe that's the figure.)  Will I passively be rolled to anothe

I have an IPhone 4. Took a "trial subscription" (1 month) to the Wall Street Journal.  I don't wish to continue and, as my subscription ends on March 23rd, the notice I received was I needed to cancel the subscription. However, when I went to the IPhone site, it only showed I had a 1 month subscription & a 1 month renewal of $12.95.  Nowhere was there something that said, "Cancel."  What do I do?

I'm not sure what you mean by the 'iPhone site' - are these the instructions that you followed : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4098 ?

  • Photoshop Filter like paper currency/Wall Street Journal author pic?

WSJ articles often have the article author's image in a small box. It's a B/W line drawing style reminiscent of images on paper currency.
It there a photoshop filter that can produce similar images from photos of people?
    Thanks

There is no filter or process in Photoshop to accurately mimic the stippling technique. The portraits are done by hand, and if you observe the patterns, they follow contours determined by the artist. Here is a description of the technique: http://www.npg.si.edu/exh/journal/how.htm
You could fake the look but you're not going to get the same appearance with anything on the market now.
    Here's a quickie:
    1. Original image
    2. Create a grayscale version and make tonal adjustments. You'll want higher contrast and little surface detail (use Surface Blur)
    3. Duplicate #2 and create a separate layer using the Photocopy filter with high contrast to create an outline 'sketch'
    4. Take the #2 layer and convert to Bitmap mode using Dither. This achieves the stippling, but it's random
    5. Add #3 above #4 and set to Multiply. You can also draw more contours to emulate the look.

'''''''''Why is browser slow (45 seconds or more) in opening?

There has been a security update of the Flash Player and the current version is 10.1 r85 , so you are two versions behind (previous was 10.1 r82).

Try clearing your Cookies for the affected websites. <br />
    Tools > Options -> Privacy - Cookies = Show Cookies ''button'' <br />
Enter the domain in the Search bar at the top and all the Cookies for that URL will appear. Unless you can figure out which Cookie is for "remember me", you'll need to delete them all.
Hold the {Ctrl} key while you click on each Cookie in the small window. When that list is all highlighted, click the Remove Cookie ''button'' in the lower left. <br />
